Chelsea agree fee for Willian and in talks with Anzhi over Samuel Eto'o

    Willian_2991373.jpg

Chelsea have agreed a fee to sign Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, and are in talks with the same club about signing Samuel Eto'o.

Willian's transfer is subject to a work permit hearing which will take place on Wednesday this week and, provided it is granted, Chelsea will pay a fee reportedly in the region of £30million.And, according to Sky sources, Chelsea could be on the verge of signing a second player from Anzhi, the former Barcelona superstar Eto'o.

On Friday, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said attacking midfielder Willian had chosen to join the Stamford Bridge club rather than Spurs. The Brazilian had looked to be on the verge of joining Tottenham earlier this week before Chelsea entered the race. And on Sunday morning the Blues confirmed they have struck a deal with Anzhi.

A Chelsea statement read: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with both Willian and his club Anzhi Makhachkala for the transfer of the Brazilian player."The transfer is subject to a work permit hearing on Wednesday."Willian had got as far as completing a medical at Spurs, but Mourinho appeared to question the merit of that news being made public.

"You have to do the medical before, but the best thing to do is to do the medical in secret," said Mourinho. "If the player is fine, you can sign him. If the player is not fine you don't destroy his career.

"Every one of us managers will say we are happy with our squad, but we are always unhappy. We always want something more, something of more quality and never close the door to the possibility of adding more quality."Before Aston Villa I told you we have Plan B and Plan C so I was letting the door open to other possibilities.

"I want a 22 player squad so if somebody comes, somebody leaves. Do we need to sell, no we don't. Do we need to loan, probably yes because I don't like to work with big squads. I like to work with a small group of players, and I say 22 is a perfect number for our needs in different competitions."The development with Eto'o is new, with Mourinho hoping to boost his strike options after seeing two bids for Wayne Rooney rejected by Manchester United.

Anzhi owner Suleyman Kerimov has decided to drastically reduce his spending on the football club, and Eto'o, 32, was their highest paid player.

Arsenal to use Gareth Bale deal to lure £25.8m Angel Di Maria

    1000x67038.jpg

Arsenal are ready to capitalise on Gareth Bale’s impending move to Real Madrid by forking out £25.8million on Angel Di Maria.

The Spurs winger is set to complete a £77m switch to the Spanish giants within a matter of days, which will seemingly leave Di Maria out in the cold at the Bernabeu.Despite Real’s initial stance that the Argentinean will not be sold, reports in Spain suggest Bale’s arrival may force last season’s league runners-up into a re-think and the Gunners are ready to pounce.

Karim Benzema would be another big name left fighting for his place in the Real line-up, but his agent insists a move to the Gunners is not on the cards.
‘We can’t stop the rumours. But I tell you: Karim will not go to Arsenal,’ Karim Djaziri has told French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.‘It’s never been a question for him and no contact has been made.’

Montolivo fears Milan hangover against PSV

    309304_heroa.jpg

Riccardo Montolivo has demanded AC Milan do not suffer a Champions League hangover against PSV after their 2-1 defeat at Verona.

The Rossoneri were humbled by a Luca Toni double on the opening day of Serie A on Saturday, prompting the club's captain to urge the squad to up their game ahead of the second-leg of their European play-off on Wednesday."Each of us must look at ourselves and give something more to win games, fortunately we have an important match and we will look to make up for everything," he told reporters.

"We cannot make a repeat of how we started last season, luckily we have this crucial match on Wednesday."We know it is a crossroads for our season, we have to turn the page and focus on this match at the San Siro."

Milan led Verona until the half hour mark thanks to Andrea Poli's 15th minute strike, but two goals from Toni condemned Massimiliano Allegri's side to defeat.

'I had nobody to dedicate a third goal to,' jokes Toni

    309055_heroa.jpg

Verona striker Luca Toni has joked that he would have netted a hat-trick against AC Milan on Saturday had he had someone else to whom he could have dedicated a goal.

The 36-year-old bagged a double in the surprise 2-1 victory over the Rossoneri but the veteran forward says he would have added a third if he had so desired.

"The two goals were for my wife Martha and my daughter Bianca," Toni told Sky Sport Italia. "I did not score a third because I did not have anybody to dedicate it to.

"I enjoy playing against Milan. Even with Fiorentina I scored a lot against them, and these habits are important because they secured a great victory.

"There was some tension before the game because we knew we would be facing a great team."

The former Bayern Munich hitman turned 36 in May but, despite being in the twilight of his career, Toni says that he remains as passionate about the game as ever.

"Fortunately, I have have earned a lot much money in my life, and I am only still playing because I love football," he explained.

"I like training, I like to work hard and I like to sacrifice myself [for the team]. As long as I feel this way, I will keep playing."

Toni, who helped Italy win the World Cup in 2006, has now scored 111 goals in 250 appearances in Serie A

Ancelotti bites back at Martino over Bale fee

    301185_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has claimed Gerardo Martino "does not understand European football" in light of comments made by the Barcelona boss in relation to Real Madrid's pursuit of Gareth Bale.

The Blancos are reportedly closing in on a record-breaking €100 million deal for the Tottenham Hotspur star, prompting the newly-appointed Blaugrana coach to take exception to the size of the fee, describing the numbers involved as demonstrating "lack of respect for the world we live in."

However, the former Paris Saint-Germain trainer has now hit back at Martino, suggesting the Argentine should examine his own club's activity in the transfer market before taking the moral high-ground.

"I didn't understand it," Ancelotti told reporters on Sunday. "He hasn't been here for long; he does not understand European football and does not understand how his own club works.

"Barcelona buy their players with money, too. It was certainly a strange thing to say."

The Bale deal is expected to be completed in the coming days but Ancelotti says he has not yet given any through to the Welshman's seemingly imminent arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I don't know where he [Bale] will play," the Champions League winner admitted. "I have other things on my mind at the moment.

"He is not a Real Madrid player yet and I want to respect those [in my squad] who are prepared for the next match."

Ancelotti and Martino will face off in the first Clasico of the season on October 26.

Bayern's Thiago out for seven weeks

    305083_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich have announced that Thiago Alcantara has suffered a ligament tear and will be out of action for seven weeks.

The former Barcelona starlet was forced off in the 62nd minute of the Bavarians' 2-0 victory over Nurnberg on Saturday and the Bundesliga giants have now revealed that the midfielder requires an operation.

"Thiago picked up the injury during the second half of the game," a statement on the club's official website read.

"He will undergo surgery in Munich on Monday and is expected to be out for seven weeks."

The 22-year-old Spain international is now set to miss the Bundesliga clashes with Freiburg, Hannover, Schalke and Wolfsburg, in addition to several group stage fixtures in the Champions League.

Thiago only arrived at the Allianz Arena in July, after deciding to link up once again with former Blaugrana coach Pep Guardiola despite reported interest from Manchester United.

I am 'fed up' of Ljajic saga, admits Montella

    303006_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella has said he is "fed up" of the transfer saga involving forward Adem Ljajic.

The 21-year-old, whose contract expires next summer, has been subject of intense speculation as of late, with AC Milan and Atletico Madrid among those reportedly poised to make a move for the wantaway star.

It is understood the Serbia international has been given a Tuesday deadline to decide whether or not he wishes to extend his stay at Stadio Artemio Franchi - but Montella has admitted that his patience is already wearing thin.

"I am fed up of the situation," the former Italy international told reporters ahead of the club's first game of the season against Catania, on Monday.

"I think he showed something in the second half of last season, proving that he appreciated the support shown to him by his team-mates, club and coach.

"I have neither the time nor the desire to wait for him, seeing as he’s not calm and not focused on his work."

The team's training session on Saturday was reportedly interrupted by a group of supporters, who proceeded to heckle Ljajic for his perceived reluctance to remain at the club.

Montella added: "The fans can do what they want to, just like Adem. I don’t think a few jeers can condition a player or a club. At times, jeers are a sign of interest ..."

Milan have already had an offer of around €8 million rejected by Fiorentina, with Viola vice-president Paolo Panerai taking to Twitter to label the offer as "unacceptable".

Ljajic has netted 16 times in 88 appearances during his three-year stay in Florence.

Roma boss Garcia opens door for Lamela exit

    308757_heroa.jpg

Roma manager Rudi Garcia has emphasised the value of Erik Lamela and admits he must be adequately replaced should he move to Tottenham this summer.

As Goal revealed on Tuesday, Spurs held talks with Roma director Walter Sabatini in London over a €35 million move for the 21-year-old, and negotiations are believed to be at an advanced stage.

And although Garcia included the Argentine in his squad for their Serie A opener against Livorno, he is wary of losing the playmaker, instead calling on the Giallorossi board to find a suitable replacement.

"Every coach would love to have a player who scores 15 goals per season and who is a regular in the Argentine national team,” Garcia told reporters.

"Erik is in the squad, exactly like the other 22 players. I can't do anything about the transfer market, so I am concentrated on tomorrow's game to start with a win.

"I have faith in my club because this will be a strong Roma, which is important for the fans and for all of us. I trust the club will give me options, so if someone leaves he'll be replaced by someone of the same level."

Garcia also hinted that if the fee was large enough it would be difficult for Roma to reject a bid for Lamela, regardless of how soon the season begins.

He added: "There are two aspects to be considered: sporting and financial. At times the financial aspect comes first.

“I always consider the transfer market to be the worst time for a coach and the fact our season begins before the session has closed is irritating.

"We are working along with the directors and I trust they will give me a competitive squad."

Lyon didn't deserve to lose, insists Garde

    228224_heroa.jpg

Remi Garde lamented Olympique Lyonnais' display against Stade de Reims but believed that his side did enough to at least take a draw.Clement Grenier missed a penalty for the hosts before Odair Fortes struck in the 77th minute to give the northern French side a shock 1-0 win.

In a game disrupted by torrential rain - with officials forced to suspend play by 35 minutes at the start of the second half after a downpour - Remi stressed that his side showed sufficient quality to at very least avoid defeat."We are very disappointed after the game we've played," the 47-year-old Frenchman told journalists after the game.

"We did not play well in the first half, this is obvious, but we did everything we needed to do in the second half in order to win the game."I think as a minimum, a draw would have reflected the game more fairly."

The game represented Lyon's second loss in five days, after they slipped to a 2-0 defeat against Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Champions League playoff on Tuesday.Though Grenier was willing to accept a great deal of the blame after the game, he dismissed talk of an early-season crisis at Stade de Gerland.

"My penalty miss was the turning point of the match," the 22-year-old Frenchman said."But despite losing at home, it is only at the beginning season and we have a return match Wednesday in the Champions League. We cannot talk about a nightmare start to the season right now and we will recover."

    Chiellini impressed by 'world-class' Tevez

    307085_heroa.jpg

Giorgio Chiellini hailed the quality of Carlos Tevez after the forward's strike led Juventus to a 1-0 win over Sampdoria.

The Argentine found the net just before the hour mark on his Serie A debut to give the Bianconeri the three points at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and the perfect start to their league title defence.Chiellini, speaking to journalists after the game, was eager to praise the club's star summer signing and revealed he was especially delighted with the 29-year-old's selfless attitude.

"Tevez is an absolutely world-class player," the centre-half said."But what surprised me more than anything is the way he sacrifices himself to help the team."He works like a mule! I am happy for him as he is starting to reap the rewards of all his hard work this summer."

The Old Lady began the season with a comfortable 4-0 win over Lazio in the Supercoppa Italiana before defeating the Blucerchiati, but Chiellini believes there is far more to come from the side."As a team we have ample room for improvement, as our legs are still not 100 per cent," he continued.

"Sampdoria were a difficult side to face who closed up well, so it’s good that we allowed them little or nothing in attack."

Ibrahimovic is no longer the centre of the world, says Papin

    306845_heroa.jpg

Jean-Pierre Papin has suggested that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has lost his position as Paris Saint-Germain's top star after the signing of Edinson Cavani. The 31-year-old Swede has not scored in his last three competitive games for les Parisiens, suffering a similar drought only once last season, and is under pressure to find the net against Nantes on Sunday.

Papin believes that Ibrahimovic must now come to terms with being one of two world-class strikers at the club and that he may find himself second choice to Cavani if he does not end his barren spell."The problem today is that he [Ibrahimovic] is no longer the centre of the world," the 1991 Ballon d'Or winner was quoted by le10sport.com.

"With Cavani, PSG has two superstars and, obviously, one of the two will be more successful than the other. It must have made him twinge to see Cavani score last Sunday [in a 1-1 draw with Ajaccio] and not him. "But I am sure that his priority is to see PSG win. The group must come before him."

Les Rouge-et-bleu have made an indifferent start to their title defence, having drawn both of their opening two games.
