Man United Agree £24m Fee for Everton Midfielder Marouane Fellaini: Bid for Belgian

Man United Agree £24m Fee for Everton Midfielder Marouane Fellaini: Bid for Belgian Accepted

Belgian midfielder could be set for Goodison exit.

A summer of speculation could finally be coming to an end with Everton reportedly accepting an offer of £24million from Manchester United for Marouane Fellaini, according to the Liverpool Echo.

New United manager David Moyes has been targeting Fellaini as well as left-back Leighton Baines ever since leaving his post as Everton boss at the end of last season.

So far Moyes had failed with bids for the pair, with Everton even releasing a statement slamming the offers as “derisory and insulting”, as they were deemed to fall way below their valuation of the players.

However, the Toffees now seem to have accepted an initial offer of £20million rising to £24million, which will see the 25-year-old become Moyes’ first major signing since moving to Old Trafford.

A midfielder has been high on the Scot’s priorities this summer, with the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas also linked with moves to the club.

Everton are now likely to sign Wigan midfielder James McCarthy as a replacement for Fellaini, though they will face competition from Newcastle for the Irishman’s signature.

Fellaini’s fine form last season also saw him become a target for Arsenal at points this summer.

    Ozil: I'm staying at Real

    mesutozilgoalbetis_576x324.jpg

Mesut Ozil looks to have put an end to speculation he might join Manchester United or Arsenal this summer by saying he has no intention of leaving Real Madrid.

It had been suggested in both the Spanish and British press that Ozil was contemplating a move having been unsettled by the possibility of losing his first team place if and when Gareth Bale completes his world record transfer to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The speculation was heightened amid reports that Madrid had knocked back attempts by Ozil’s father and agent to improve his son’s annual salary from €5 million to €8 million a year, and by talk that the Germany international was unhappy after being substituted early in both Madrid’s opening two La Liga games.

However the playmaker, 24, told reporters at a commercial event in the Bernabeu club shop on Wednesday lunchtime that he was very happy at Madrid and not looking to move.

"I feel really good at Madrid," Ozil said. "I have a contract here until 2016. I feel very good here and get on really well with my team-mates. I want success here. There has been a lot written in the media, talk of some other options, but I have a contract and I am staying with Real Madrid."Ozil denied he was struggling to fit into the new, more patient midfield style which has been introduced under incoming coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"I feel very good, I have the confidence of the coach," he said. "There is a series of objectives that we want to achieve, in which each one will have a role to play. That is one of the reasons why I want to stay. We are very happy, we have won our two games, we have taken six points. It is true that we need to play better, but there is a long way to go."

Asked about his goals for the 2013-14 campaign, the former Werder Bremen man said that a squad as deep and talented as Madrid’s must be looking to win significant silverware.

"When you play for a team as important as Real Madrid, you must win trophies," he said. "We are going to do everything we can to win. It is true this is a club with special players, and I am convinced we will win trophies."

Chelsea secure signing of Spurs target Willian

    willian_chelsea-425193.jpg

Spurs thought they had tied up the £30million transfer of the 25-year-old only for a last-minute offer of £32m from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to scupper their efforts.

And Willian has now secured his move to Stamford Bridge after being granted a work permit to fulfil his five-year contract.

"I'm very happy to be here, it's been a dream of mine to come and play here," said Willian.

"Chelsea are one of the best clubs in the world, and now I'm going to play for one of the best managers in the world, so I'm very happy and looking forward to it."

Willian will wear the number 22 shirt for Jose Mourinho's side this season.

Everton 2-1 Stevenage (aet): Fellaini snatches victory at the death
    310670hp2.jpg

Everton overcame a resilient Stevenage side to record a 2-1 win, with Marouane Fellaini bagging an extra-time winner which sees the Toffees safely through to the third round of the Capital One Cup.

The 25-year-old, who only entered the game in the 95th minute, managed to prevent a nervy shoot-out for the hosts on Wednesday night after they failed to put the game to bed in normal time, despite numerous opportunities.

The Premier League side saw their opponents, who have strangely never played a League Cup tie away from home, go ahead through Luke Freeman but Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu grabbed an equaliser just before the break.

But the wasted opportunities, many of which fell to Arouna Kone who made his first competitive start for the club, left the sides having to decide the encounter in extra-time, with Fellaini finally landing the decisive blow.

Roberto Martinez showed attacking intent among eight Everton changes, handing debuts to Joel Robles and highly rated youngster Deulofeu, who started up front alongside Kone.

After early pressure from the hosts, the Ivorian should have given his side the advantage as Deulofeu got to the by-line and cut the ball back, but the former Wigan frontman's shot could not evade the Stevenage defenders blocking the goal line.

Despite Everton's dominance, it was Stevenage who took the lead when Freeman found the back of the net against the run of play in the 36th minute after some impressive build-up play from his team-mates. The former Arsenal forward fired home after a clever pass from Jimmy Smith, who found the 21-year-old with a neat pass into the area.

And though the home crowd saw more disappointment when Kone skied over minutes before the break, Deulofeu was on hand to claw it back immediately before the half-time whistle. The Spain Under-21 international kept his calm to glide forward and curl a neat left-footed shot across goalkeeper Chris Day.

The youngster came out for the second half with the same vigour, knocking a perfect ball into Steven Naismith with the 26-year-old just unable to turn it in.

His efforts typified a renewed fervour in attack from the home side, who heaped pressure on their opponents. Leon Osman went close for the Toffes, but his powerful shot was blocked by Doughty in the 58th minute.

Deulofeu remained the star of the show, and he came close to hitting the winner in the 71st minute when his effort from outside the box was blocked by Jon Ashton.

In an otherwise lacklustre end to the 90 minutes, Stevenage substitute Greg Tansey went close to a stunning winner, but Robles tipped his long-range effort over as the game entered extra-time.

Martinez opted to bring midfielder Fellaini into the mix in Barkley’s place, but it was Kone who had the best chance of the first period, with the Ivory Coast international dithering on the ball after Deulofeu’s precise cross.

However, Stevenage could not keep Fellaini out, and he made no mistake to fire home just yards from the goal to clinch the tie with barely five minutes left on the clock to set up a third-round trip to Fulham.

Celtic 3-0 Shakhter Karagandy (Agg 3-2): Forrest leaves it late to secure Champions League progress

    310618hp2.jpg

Celtic overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit in dramatic fashion to beat Shakhter Karagandy 3-0 at Celtic Park on Wednesday night to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.

Neil Lennon's side dominated proceedings and, with the match appearing to be heading for extra-time, finally secured their passage in the 92nd minute as James Forrest netted the decisive third goal.

After being frustrated for the majority of the first half by goalkeeper Aleksandr Mokin, Celtic finally found a way through with an outstanding 25-yard effort from Kris Commons.

The Bhoys were level on aggregate just three minutes after the restart when Georgios Samaras coolly finished from 10 yards, before Forrest then delighted the home fans in added time.

Lennon made three changes to the side that lost the first leg, with Emilio Izaguirre, Virgil van Dijk and Steven Mouyokolo coming out, and Adam Matthews, Efe Ambrose and Stokes taking their place. Viktor Kumyov, meanwhile, kept faith in the same side that started in Kazakhstan.

Celtic began the game with plenty of intent, but Mokin in the Shakhter goal produced a string of fine saves.

The first was a stunning point-blank stop from Mikael Lustig's header in the sixth minute, and the keeper followed that up by palming away Forrest's fierce strike from the edge of the box.

Still Celtic came forward and twice Anthony Stokes had the chance to open the scoring.

First he saw he a drilled close-range effort stopped by Mokin, before the former Sunderland striker saw a header from Commons' cross come off his shoulder, aiding the Shakhter goalkeeper's save to his left.

The home side were further frustrated in the 15th minute when Commons struck a free kick from the left channel that looked destined for the back of the net before Mokin parried it away.

Lennon's team maintained their dominance in possession, but the clear-cut chances began to dry up as the away side defended resolutely.

But the breakthrough finally came in first-half stoppage time when Commons took ownership of the ball 25 yards out from goal and unleashed a fierce left-footed shot that swerved away from Mokin and into the far corner.

Celtic levelled the tie just three minutes after the break as a Celtic corner was only half cleared and Lustig's effort was controlled by Samaras, with the Greece international lifting his strike high into the net to send Celtic Park into raptures.

It should have been three 11 minutes later when a surging run by Forrest led to him crossing to Stokes who somehow managed to volley against the crossbar from six yards.

They were almost made to pay for their profligacy as twice Shakhter came close.

First Fraser Forster flapped at a corner and Mathews cleared an Andrei Finonchenko header off the line, before a scramble in the box after a long throw led to the ball cannoning back off the bar.

Celtic kept probing for the goal that would send them through and Stokes came close in the 88th minute but shot wide from outside the area.

But they would not be denied as the 25-year-old skipped past two challenges before laying the ball into Forrest's path who blasted home the winner and sent Celtic into the group stages of the Champions League.
