Everton 3-2 Newcastle: Lukaku tears Toon apart

    323330hp2.jpg

Romelu Lukaku scored twice on his home debut for Everton as they went fourth in the Premier League with a 3-2 win over Newcastle.

Lukaku - on loan from Chelsea - produced a magnificent performance in his first start on Monday to help maintain his side's unbeaten start to the top-flight campaign.

Newcastle were condemned to their second successive league defeat as a first-half double from Lukaku, which sandwiched a goal from Ross Barkley, wrapped up the win for Everton.

Substitute Yohan Cabaye netted in spectacular fashion early in the second half before Loic Remy reduced the deficit further late on, but Newcastle could not complete the comeback despite their best efforts.

Everton made two changes to the side that started in the 3-2 win at West Ham last time out, with Lukaku - who scored the winner at Upton Park - and James McCarthy coming in for Nikica Jelavic and Steven Naismith.

Meanwhile, midfielder Gareth Barry made his 500th Premier League appearance.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew brought in Cheick Tiote and Yoan Gouffran in place of Cabaye and Papiss Cisse after their home defeat to Hull City.

The hosts started brightly, Lukaku putting the ball in the net in the first minute only to see the flag raised for offside.

But, just three minutes later, he did put Roberto Martinez's men ahead, as his Belgium international team-mate Kevin Mirallas beat Davide Santon to a loose ball before delivering a superb right-wing cross that Lukaku duly placed past Tim Krul.

Everton continued to push forward following the goal, and they twice came close to doubling their lead when Barkley fired wide from the edge of the area before Krul denied McCarthy after the visitors had given the ball away inside their own half.

Newcastle could not get to grips with the hosts’ high-tempo start, with Lukaku heavily involved in almost every attack.

And the 20-year-old had a key impact once again as Everton deservedly went two up, the striker playing a clever pass into the path of Barkley, who coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Pardew’s men were reeling by this point, and the home side looked to have sealed the three points eight minutes before the interval when Lukaku bagged his second of the game.

The former Anderlecht man capitalised on confusion in the Newcastle defence to latch on to a goal kick from Tim Howard, collecting the ball ahead of Krul before rounding Fabricio Coloccini and tucking the ball into an empty net.

Newcastle rarely troubled Everton in the first half, but after Pardew made two changes during the interval - Mike Williamson and Cabaye were brought on for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Hatem Ben Arfa - they pulled a goal back almost immediately.

France international Cabaye fired a fine long-range strike into the top corner shortly after Gouffran had hit the post to give the visitors a glimmer of hope.

Everton responded well, with Lukaku spurning a chance for his hat-trick after he had again found a way in behind the Newcastle defence, but it was Pardew's side who dictated the majority of the play in the second period.

And Newcastle threatened a dramatic comeback when Remy tapped in from close range after latching on to Mathieu Debuchy's flick-on in the 89th minute, but Everton clung on to seal victory.

    Emanuelson expects 'challenging' Ajax return

    224902_heroa.jpg

AC Milan winger Urby Emanuelson is excited to return to Ajax for the first time since leaving the club in 2011.

The versatile Dutchman spent the first seven years of his professional career at the Amsterdam ArenA, having been at the club since 1994 as a youngster.

Emanuelson, who is looking forward to playing in front of friends and family in Netherlands, has played at left-back, on the wing and as an attacking midfielder this season and admits he would feel more confident with a permanent position.

"It’s going to be a nice challenge against Ajax," he told nusport.nl. "There are going to be a lot of my relatives and friends in the stands.

"Allegri has often changed my role in the team, but I have continued to do my best for the club. It would be better for me though when I have a defined role in the team."

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani is hoping this weekend’s win over Sampdoria will help get the injury-hit squad back on track after a poor start to the domestic season, though he cannot see an immediate return for Stephan El Shaarawy or Kaka.

"The injury to El Shaarawy is very unfortunate," Galliani told reporters. "He will certainly miss the Ajax game.

"However, we have to look to the future with optimism and we’ll take on Ajax with belief.

"Kaka will also not be available for the game against Juventus, either. It is more likely that he will be back after the international break."

Milan sit second in Champions League Group H behind Barcelona on goal difference and ninth in Serie A after six games.

    Martinez: Chelsea cannot recall Lukaku

    323330_heroa.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez insists Romelu Lukaku will be staying at Goodison Park for the remainder of the season after the Belgium striker starred in the Toffees' 3-2 win over Newcastle.

The Chelsea loanee scored twice on his home debut as well as providing an assist for Ross Barkley, and Martinez heaped praise on his new acquisition after an excellent display.

"It's a loan deal for the season. That's the case for Gareth Barry and for Romelu. I could be sweating now if it wasn't," he told reporters.

"He's a young man who has everything as a striker. Sometimes you see a number nine who is powerful and has a great physical presence, but what Romelu brings is that he is technically really gifted.

"When he holds up play with his back to goal he is a focal point. His relationship with Ross Barkley was magic at times.

"He's a great goalscorer. I want him to enjoy his football, develop and become as good as he can be."

The result sees Everton climb to fourth in the Premier League table after an unbeaten start to the campaign, and despite a Newcastle fightback in the second period, the former Wigan boss was thrilled with his side's performance.

"We were very, very good in the first half," he added. "We defended very well and kept Newcastle to very little threat.

"From that point on some of the attacking play as fascinating. The link-up play between Romelu, Ross and Kevin Mirallas was at its best.

"After we conceded the first goal I was very pleased with the way we controlled the game. We showed style in the first half and grit in the second half for a well-deserved three points."

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, on the other hand, was highly critical of his side, though he was given some heart by their resurgence after the half-time break.

"It would have been fortuitous for us if we'd got something from that game because in the first half I'm afraid that wasn't good enough from us," he told a press conference.

"The second half was much more like it. We showed a lot of pride and a lot of passion.

"We won some headers, made some tackles and made some forward passes, which helped. We managed to get two goals and almost get something out of it."

Wenger is the best manager in the Premier League - Benitez

    318485_heroa.jpg

Rafa Benitez has further stoked his rivalry with Jose Mourinho by claiming Arsene Wenger is the best manager in the Premier League.

Benitez's Napoli meet Wenger's Arsenal in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday in a clash which pits two of Europe's most in-form sides against each other.

Responding to the Gunners boss' assertion that he has not been given due credit for the job he did at Chelsea last season, the Spaniard replied: "Arsene Wenger is the best manager in the Premier League.

"Against Borussia Dortmund we attacked from the first minute, but tomorrow we will have to contain the euphoria because we face a very strong team at the top of the Premier League.

"We have to show our character and our strength, having respect for the opponent, but without fear."

Former Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Higuain and Raul Albiol are both fitness doubts for the visit to the Emirates Stadium and Benitez admits he will have to monitor both until the last minute.

"We have to see how they train in order to understand how they are and see if they are available," he added. "I still do not know who will play."

Benitez is also determined to keep his feet on the ground, despite Napoli's blistering start to the season which has seen them win five of their six Serie A games.

"We look from game to game," he insisted. "We have a good number of players, if we avoid injuries we can do well in all competitions."

Allegri: Ajax win needed to avoid Barca pressure

    320832_heroa.jpg

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri believes his side need a win at Ajax on Tuesday to avoid pressure to defeat Barcelona.

The Serie A outfit beat Celtic 2-0 win in their first match of the group stage, but travel now to the Amsterdam ArenA where they have won just once in four trips.

With Spanish giants Barca drawn into their group, Allegri knows every point is crucial if they hope to advance to the knock-out stages.

"Ajax are a very intense side, a bit like PSV where we struggled a lot in the first few minutes [in the qualification phase]," he told reporters.

"We have to do well in these situations, there is a lot at stake. A victory would allow us to go into the Barcelona game with a relaxed approach.

"In the league we have to pull our sleeves up but tomorrow we need to approach the game with a lot of focus and a good deal of skill."

Allegri will have a well-rested Mario Balotelli available for selection, after missing the club’s previous two matches due to a three-match suspension.

"I think Balotelli is relaxed, he just has to think about playing football, he has to learn to have respect for other players and for the referees.

"For now I have Balotelli available and I will as well after the international break."

Stephan El Shaarawy is unavailable with injury and does not make the trip to Amsterdam, along with a few other first team regulars, but Riccardo Montolivo and Riccardo Saponara are fit and available for Tuesday’s match.

"We are very unlucky at the moment. Up until now Milan’s injuries have been 80 per cent trauma injuries and only a wizard knows why the rest are muscular injuries.

"If I had known that El Shaarawy was going to get injured I would not have made him train.

"Montolivo and Balotelli are important players. It is a shame about El Shaarawy, that he isn’t here. Montolivo is the captain and his return is important to us and Balo is also very important for us and he has to show that tomorrow.

"My form is mirrored by that of the team, it is improving. If I look at the results in the league then I know we can do better. We have to do our best to win the game tomorrow."

Milan sit ninth in Serie A after six games and European football will be a welcome respite to a rough start to domestic football in 2013-14.

Wanyama: Celtic can beat Barcelona again

    295509_heroa.jpg

Victor Wanyama believes Celtic are capable of defeating Barcelona for the second successive year in the Champions League group stages.

The Kenyan midfielder, who left the club to join Southampton this summer, scored a header and produced a man-of-the-match display as Neil Lennon’s men secured a famous 2-1 victory over the Catalan giants in Glasgow last year.

Wanyama has been watching Celtic closely since making his move down south and is optimistic they can secure another upset, particularly with Lionel Messi out injured.

"I believe Celtic can beat them again - they just need to take their chances," he said in his column for The Daily Mail.

"It is a game with a lot of good memories for me. When I scored for Celtic and we beat them 2-1 last year it was one of the highlights of my career.

"To play well, to score and to beat as big a team as Barcelona was incredible.

"Javier Mascherano is injured and Lionel Messi got injured on Saturday so maybe Celtic can take advantage."

The midfielder believes strong concentration and work rate will be pivotal to stand a chance of beating the Spanish champions on Tuesday and says matching a side of that quality for 90 minutes is a real mental test.

Wanyama said: "I knew we had to be very strong in the middle of the park as that is their strongest point. It's not just with Iniesta and Xavi but Busquets and Fabregas too.

"They keep the ball so well and work to press it too. They can hurt you - it isn't easy. We needed to concentrate 100 per cent because the second you go to sleep they can kill you off.

"We had to be focused all the way through. Afterwards when you play them you are not just tired physically but mentally. Your head hurts.

"It's so important to try and stay strong - I just hope Celtic can do it again."

Wanyama admitted he was a frustrated viewer when Celtic went down 2-0 to AC Milan at San Siro in their opening Champions League encounter despite having had the better during lengthy spells of the match.

The 22-year-old added: "It was frustrating. It was such a good team performance. They were better than them all over the park. I just felt that if they had got one goal then they would have gone on to win by three or four.

"It's what happens at this level. They were so unlucky but Celtic found last year that there is greater importance in taking your chances because the top European teams often have a player that maybe does little else but finish."

Barcelona edge out AC Milan as the Champions League’s most successful team

    49622_heroa.jpg

Barcelona are the most successful club in the modern era of the Champions League, according to a Goal study. The world’s biggest football website collated the yearly records of every club ever to qualify for the European Cup under its new banner since 1992 and found that the Catalan outfit pip AC Milan to the title of the greatest team in the greatest club competition in the world.

Using the Fibonacci points formula of ascending value, teams reaching the first stage of any one edition were given one point, those making the round of 16 gained two, quarter-finalists three, semi-finalists five, finalists earned eight and winners were allotted 13 points. And, over the course of the 21-year history of the new-style tournament, three-time winners Barca collected a total of 92 points compared to the Rossoneri’s 86.

    9ix2.jpg

Real Madrid come in just behind the pair with 85 points, meaning all of the podium positions are taken up by clubs with three Champions League wins to their name. Double winners Manchester United (1999 and 2008) and Bayern Munich (2001 and 2013) complete a star-studded top five, with sixth-placed Juventus a full 23 points behind the current holders, emphasising the superiority of the leading quintent.

Barcelona have been particularly boosted by their performances over the past six seasons in Europe, with their victories in 2009 and 2011 helping them to record 46 points since 2007. Their first 46 points took 15 years to achieve, during which time Milan had racked up 75 points. The Italian giants’ recent stuttering form on the continent has seen their lead evaporate since their most recent triumph in Athens six years ago.

While the likes of Ajax, Juve, Porto and Marseille may all have suffered somewhat in recent times, they remain in the top 20 thanks to their previous form in the Champions League. New superpowers, on the other hand, are nowhere to be seen. Paris Saint-Germain are placed 33rd with just one semi-final appearance in 1995 to their name, with fellow big-spenders Manchester City sitting joint-83rd having made it only as far as the group stage in their two efforts. The Blaugrana’s presence at the top, together with Madrid’s placing of third, has tipped the scales towards Spain in the battle between the continent’s nations.

Primera Liga clubs have tallied a combined 249 points since 1992, with even the likes of Mallorca, Real Betis and Real Sociedad having qualified for the event over the years.

Predictably, English clubs come in second with a total of 228 points, while Italy sits third in the rankings just 12 points further back. Bundesliga clubs are placed fourth, ahead of France in fifth. In Champions League history, a total of 152 clubs have made it past the qualifying stages, representing 38 different nations.
