Ronaldo: This is a great moment in my career

    337276_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is elated with life at the club after his record-equalling performance during the 2-2 draw at Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Portuguese forward scored one and assisted another for the visitors, with his goal marking his eighth in the group stage this campaign, equalling the mark previously set by Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004-05), Hernan Crespo and Filippo Inzaghi (both 2002-03).

And though Ronaldo attempted to play down his record-breaking form - which saw him leapfrog Barcelona star Lionel Messi for the record of Champions League goals scored in a calendar year - he could not hide his joy at the Blancos' display.

"I'm so happy. This is a great moment for my career. I feel so loved and always try to do my best," he began to Sky Sport. "I'm not worried about the records. They come naturally. Its positive, but I want to win more and to be better in the future.
"We knew the difficulty against Juventus. In the first half we suffered, [but] in the second half we were redeemed. We reacted so well, we hit the post and we were better."As I said, we’re still improving. In my opinion, we could be better. We want to be better, but we’ll do it step by step."

Madrid sit first in Group B on 10 points, and need only one point from their remaining two games to qualify as group winners, but Juventus’ situation is far from certain, as they sit bottom of the group on 3 points, one behind Galatasaray and Copenhagen.

And though Ronaldo was eager for his side to wrap up a spot in the knock-out stages, he maintained that they could be joined in the last 16 by Juve, who he felt were strong enough to finish second.

"For us it is a good point, very important for the leadership in the group. We are ready for qualification to the knock-out stages, although it’s still not arithmetically certain," he continued."I think that [Juventus] play very competitively and strongly. They’re not qualified, but I think that they will end up second in the group."

Ronaldo also refused to be drawn into questions about Fifa president Sepp Blatter, who he criticised for apparently mocking the Portuguese and praising Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the same breath.

"Blatter? I only give my answers on the pitch not outside of it. All I can say is that I feel great at the moment."

'Clumsy' PSG given a wake-up call, says Blanc

    337343_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain boss Laurent Blanc believes his side were made to pay for their "clumsiness" after they were held to a 1-1 draw by a spirited Anderlecht outfit on Tuesday.

The French champions could have secured their place in the last 16 with a win over the Belgians, but Demy de Zeeuw's goal threatened to condemn the hosts to a shock first Champions League defeat of the season before Zlatan Ibrahimovic's equaliser.

Given PSG's dominant 5-0 thrashing of Anderlecht in the previous round of fixtures, there are many who expected a similar disparity between the sides on Tuesday, and Blanc believes such talk allowed complacency to creep into his side's game.

"I wouldn't say there was a lack of desire or investment. We were too average in all areas," he was quoted as saying by RMC. "We had a lot of technical errors, which hasn't happened for some time. Despite this, we still created a lot of opportunities, so we also showed some clumsiness in front of goal.

"It reminds us that before talking about a win or how many goals we will score, we have to win it on the pitch, and tonight, Paris were too average to win.

"Anderlecht have been rewarded for this match. This is a team who had a lot of courage and were very organised.

"I think it's a good wake-up call. The players put in a lot physically, they are very tired, but it was not enough."

Dortmund cannot run like robots - Subotic

    275028_heroa.jpg

Neven Subotic has revealed the work rate demanded by Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, although he admits his side "cannot run like robots".

The defender, 24, joined the Schwarzgelben in the summer of 2008 from Mainz along with coach Klopp, and has gone on to form an integral part of the BVB first team in recent seasons.

Dortmund currently sit top of their Champions League group and one point behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, and Subotic puts the club's success down to their tireless efforts in matches.

"We have a tactic that we always try to put on the pitch and we want to fill this tactic with life," he is quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.

"We cannot run like robots so we are just doing our job. Klopp wants us to do our job plus five or 10 per cent more to really do more than the other team."

Subotic has been linked with a move away from Signal Iduna Park, with Manchester United rumoured to be among the defender's admirers, but he insists that a move away is extremely unlikely.

"I wouldn’t move to any other club," he continued. "I'm still growing with this club at a very great rate where it would be silly for me to go somewhere and try to grow faster with a big chance of then maybe sitting on the bench."

Subotic has nothing but words of praise for Klopp, who has signed the Serbia international twice in his career, and claims the 46-year-old cares immensely about Dortmund and his squad.

"You go into a room and see people laughing and you know he is in the middle just being himself," he added. "He is very friendly, very funny but then as a coach he has that serious side too.

"He stands out in the way he gets people to want to be on his good side, everybody wants him to be proud of them because he does so much for us.

"You see him always working and thinking about this tactic and that. He puts a lot of work and effort in and we all try to at least match that, if not top it.

"He is very emotional because he is very heavily invested in this team. You can tell he cares so much that he acts on it. If something happens to a family member that we care so much about we would cry and for him it is kind of the same thing."

Dortmund face Arsenal on home turf as they look to replicate their 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium a fortnight ago in Wednesday's Champions League encounter.

Real Sociedad deserved Manchester United draw - Arrasate

    337352_heroa.jpg

Real Sociedad boss Jagoba Arrasate praised his side's work ethic after they held on for a 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Tuesday.

The point represents Sociedad's first of their Group A campaign, and keeps their hopes of reaching the Champions League last 16 narrowly alive after Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayer Leverkusen also played out a goalless draw.

Arrasate's side had to survive plenty of pressure from United in the second half and they rode their luck as Robin van Persie missed a penalty, but the 35-year-old felt they deserved their point.

"I congratulated my players," he told reporters. "They are on their knees after putting in a huge effort.

"When the team gives its all like that, you can only salute them.

"The point will help us to strengthen but we would have preferred to have played a little better."

Sociedad must win their remaining games with Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donetsk handsomely and hope both lose to United in order to reach the last 16.

Moyes backs Van Persie after penalty miss

    337351_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has backed Robin van Persie to bounce back from his penalty miss against Real Sociedad.

The Dutchman came off the bench to replace Wayne Rooney with the match goalless, only to hit the woodwork from 12 yards before again being denied by the upright late on.

But Moyes is certain Van Persie will not be deterred, despite failing to add to his solitary goal so far in Europe this season.

"The goals will come for Robin, he's scoring already so hopefully more will come," he told Sky Sports.

Chicharito was also guilty of profligacy, and United's disappointment was compounded in the closing minutes of the match when Marouane Fellaini was sent off, though remains confident of qualification for the knockout stage.

"I think it bobbles to be fair to [Chicharito], it just bobbles off the ground and he got underneath it," he added.

"It shouldn't have been a draw, it should've been a victory. We played well enough to win the game.

"We had a lot of chances and missed a penalty as well. It was [concerning] because when you get opportunities you want to take them. They would have ensured that we went well clear at the top of this group.

"I thought it was a difficult night for all our players, the referee didn't give us much.

"We're in a good position but we should have got the three points tonight. We've got two more games to come and hopefully we get the points to qualify."

The Scot also leapt to the defence of Fellaini, insisting that the Belgium international was unlucky to be shown a second yellow card for a late challenge.

"I think there were some strange decisions, and that was one of them," the United boss added.

"I think it was just a case of totting up [the challenges] at the end of the day that got him the sending off. It was harsh, as he played well."

Conte: Juventus are stronger after Real Madrid draw

    337223_heroa.jpg

Antonio Conte believes Juventus have been made stronger by their 2-2 draw with Real Madrid on Tuesday and is confident they can still qualify for the last 16.
Arturo Vidal put Juve ahead from the spot shortly before half-time, but Real hit back seven minutes after the break through Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gareth Bale then put the Spanish side ahead on the hour mark before Fernando Llorente salvaged a point for the Serie A champions. The result leaves Juve propping up their group with just three points and no wins, but Conte insists that the competition is not over for his side.

"We can play at their (Real's) level, which we had already proved in Madrid two weeks ago," said the Juve coach. "We will still have something to say in this competition."We feel stronger after this game, and we know what we do on the pitch decides who is going to win or lose, it's up to us."

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon feels the Italians should be proud of their point but admits qualification from Group B is now an uphill task."It's no disgrace to drop points against a big team like Real Madrid," he said.

"They have great individual quality, wonderful strikers and every time they get near the goal you can feel the pressure rising."It won't be easy for us now. but we'll do what we can to qualify."

The veteran goalkeeper reserved special praise for his opposite number, Iker Casillas, who made a string of crucial saves as he was restored to the first team.
"Iker Casillas did really well," he continued. "His saves helped his team to get a draw."

Casillas: I will see out my Madrid contract

    337232_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has revealed that he intends to stay at the club until at least the end of his contract following his starring role in securing a 2-2 draw at Juventus in the Champions League.

The goalkeeper made a number of fine saves throughout the game and helped Madrid secure the point which moves them a draw away from the knock-out stages of the tournament for yet another campaign.

And, despite being used as a reserve goalkeeper behind Diego Lopez in La Liga, the club skipper - whose contract runs out in 2017 - insisted he has no intention of leaving the Santiago Bernabeu any time soon."Of course I'll end the year in Madrid," he told reporters. "I said it last time, but some people always try to misinterpret me."My intention is to stay in January and July and until the end of my current contract. I don't know what could happen from here to one year or more.

"I’m happy. These days it's difficult to get into the team so when I have the opportunity to play I have to be at my maximum level in order that the coach keeps faith in me. It's not easy only playing every two weeks, but that’s the way it is."
Casillas was also eager for Madrid to book their place in the round of 16 and revealed that Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon took him aside to praise his performance after the full-time whistle.

"I'm happy that Buffon offered me his congratulations at the end of the game," he continued. “We've won 10 points from 12 which in the Champions League is very good.

"We are only one step from the next round. We are fine in the Champions League and we want to qualify in the coming weeks. This clash against Juventus came at a good time for us and now we can focus more in La Liga and try to come back."Winger Gareth Bale, who scored his first Champions League goal for Madrid in his first start for the club, was happy with his impact on the match and pledged to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

“Personally, I'm happy to be anywhere on the pitch. The whole team are very nice to me and I must continue working hard,” he said.

“We knew that it would be difficult. This is a good result, even if we wanted to win. We did well, but the important thing is to be qualified. And we wanted to do it as soon as possible.”

Kroos: Bayern were careless in possession

    337328_heroa.jpg

Toni Kroos believes Bayern Munich were too careless in possession despite securing their place in the Champions League last 16 with a 1-0 win over Viktoria Plzen.

The German and European champions went into the game at the Doosan Arena expected to win comfortably, having thrashed the Czech side 5-0 on home soil in their previous meeting.

But laboured attacking play and a fine display from home goalkeeper Matus Kozacik kept Bayern out until Mario Mandzukic struck just six minutes after coming off the bench."We didn't have a great start but created more chances as the match progressed," he said."We had some good spells with a lot of possession in midfield but we also gave the ball away too easily when we approached their box.

"It is not easy to qualify for the knockout round after just four matches. We can be proud of this, but we still have some room for improvement."The win was Bayern's ninth Champions League triumph in a row, matching Barcelona's record set in the 2002-03 campaign.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who was rarely tested throughout the clash, echoed coach Pep Guardiola's words before the match that the Bavarians are lacking a cutting edge against teams they are expected to dominate."We didn't start well," he lamented. "In the first 10 minutes Plzen had two corners and we could not get our rhythm going.

"Against teams like this it is important to use the full width of the pitch and circulate the ball well.

"Matching Barcelona's record is great for us but we were really hoping for a better performance."

Manchester City 5-2 CSKA Moscow: Negredo hits hat-trick as City progress

    337314hp2.jpg

Alvaro Negredo scored a hat-trick as Manchester City beat CSKA Moscow 5-2 to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Argentina striker Sergio Aguero scored twice in the first half to become City’s all-time leading scorer in European football and put them on course to qualify from Group D.

Aguero took his tally to nine goals in his last six games in the process and he then set up Negredo for a third goal before Seydou Doumbia pulled one back just before the break.

Spain striker Negredo added a fourth goal early in the second half before Doumbia added his second of the night from the penalty spot.

Negredo then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time as City qualified for the knockout stages, courtesy of their head-to-head record against the Russians.

City thrashed Norwich 7-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, so it was no surprise that Manuel Pellegrini named an unchanged side – the first time he has done so as City boss - with Costel Pantilimon again preferred to under-fire England goalkeeper Joe Hart.

CSKA headed into the match having won their last three domestic games following their defeat to City last month and they were also unchanged.

The pre-match talk was dominated by the alleged racial abuse suffered by City midfielder Yaya Toure in the first meeting between the sides last month that resulted in Uefa deciding to close part of CSKA's Arena Khimki for their clash with Bayern Munich.

But City were focused on the task of qualifying and they were in front after just three minutes, when Zoran Tosic upended David Silva and Aguero's spot-kick evaded the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev diving to his left.

Aguero then doubled City's lead when he sublimely turned his marker inside the area before dispatching a measured right-foot strike into the bottom-left corner of Akinfeev's goal after just 21 minutes.

The lively Argentinian then turned provider on the half-hour mark when he took a pass from Negredo in his stride and then picked out the Spain striker at the back post for a simple tap-in.

But it was CSKA who had the final say in the first half when Pontus Wernbloom slipped the ball through for Doumbia and the striker rounded Pantilimon before pulling a goal back in stoppage time.

Any hopes of a CSKA comeback were dashed six minutes into the second half, though, when Toure picked out Samir Nasri with an incisive pass and the midfielder set up Negredo for another simple finish.

Doumba was a real handful and he scored his second of the night from the spot after Gael Clichy was adjudged to have fouled him to make it eight goals in his last 10 games.

But Negredo had the final say as he headed home at the back post to cap a memorable night for City.
