Inter 'happy to keep' Chelsea target Guarin

    354280_heroa.jpg

Fredy Guarin will stay at Inter despite interest from Chelsea, the Serie A giants have confirmed.

Last month Goal revealed the Blues had sent representatives to Italy for talks over Guarin, and that Inter directors Piero Ausilio and Marco Branca had also travelled to London for discussions.

Both the Colombian and his agent later confirmed negotiations had taken place, but Ausilio now insists Inter are happy to keep hold of their star man.

"Guarin is an Inter player and we are happy to keep him," he told Sky Sport Italia before Monday night's game away to Lazio.

"Denying the contacts with Chelsea would be denying the evidence. It is a source of pride to talk with them about one of our players, but everything stopped there.

"We are happy Guarin could stay with us for a long time. We don't have the intention to sell him. He's an important player."

Lindegaard happy to play second fiddle to De Gea at Manchester United

    356876_heroa.jpg

Anders Lindegaard is happy to keep living the dream at Manchester United despite being understudy to David de Gea.

Lindegaard started Sunday's 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Swansea City, United's fourth home loss from their last six Old Trafford fixtures. The Denmark international was making only his second appearance of the season, but even though the January transfer window is open, the 29-year-old is happy at his boyhood club.

"If I see it through my own eyes I would say 'Jesus Christ I am not playing, why is that', then it would be easy to get frustrated," Lindegaard said.

"I have to try and be objective, and raise myself up above just myself and see it from the club's perspective and how much pressure we have been under.

"Then it is easier for me to understand why things are the way they are. For me it is all about being a happy human being. I am that now at Manchester United. It is my club since I was a small kid. This is my dream.

"The question is do I have to compromise that dream and seek elsewhere. Right now the decision is to stay here and help the club. That is the most important thing.
"If I was sitting watching the games on the couch I would be very disappointed. That is how it is. It is both a praise and a curse."You have to remember how lucky you are. How many football players can say they are part of their biggest dream?

"I am not stupid. I can see I could use some more games somewhere but right now I am helping this club as much as I can."

Despite United's disappointing start to the season – which sees them seventh in the table – Lindegaard stressed that they must continue to target the Premier League title."Manchester United is not going to realign if what you mean by that is start to look lower. That is not going to happen at Manchester United," he added.

"Look at the history of this club. It is the most successful club in English football. That is not going to change. It is how it is. It is in the genes of the club and is going to continue.

"We are in the middle of the transition. I am sure when the transition is fulfilled we will be as successful as we have ever been."

Bale: Setting up Ronaldo is my job

    345790_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale said it was "his job" to set up Cristiano Ronaldo after assisting Real Madrid's second goal in their 3-0 win over Celta de Vigo.

The former Tottenham man, 24, made his comeback as a second-half substitute after a three-week spell on the sidelines with a calf injury and added his satisfaction with his current physical state.

"My assist for Ronaldo? That's my job," the Welshman told the official Madrid website.

"It was a tough match and the important thing is we got the three points. I'm very pleased that we've won our first game of 2014.

"We've had a good rest over the Christmas break and we are raring to go in 2014. We're really looking forward to it.

"I'm feeling great and I'm itching to play and help the team in 2014."

Bale has scored seven goals in 11 appearances in La Liga so far this term, while creating seven more since his world record €100 million move to the Santiago Bernabeu last summer.

Cristante: Balotelli told me to stay calm

    356738_heroa.jpg

AC Milan youngster Bryan Cristante has revealed that Mario Balotelli told him not to let nerves get the better of him prior to his maiden San Siro bow in the 3-0 win over Atalanta.

The 18-year-old made his official first-team debut in the Champions League game against Viktoria Plzen in December 2011, but had yet to feature at home for the Rossoneri.

Cristante made a fine impression on his home debut, though, as he netted once to help Milan to all three points and he says he is keen to prove his worth in the months to come.

"It was an emotional game, my first match at the San Siro, but Balotelli told me to stay calm ahead of the match," the Italy Under-19 star told the club's official website.

"I’m very happy with my home debut and we’re a good group. I joined Milan when I was 14 and I made my way through all the youth teams and now I’m in the first team.

"I was available for selection for the derby, but the coach made other choices. I try to work as best I can and show what I can do. That’s what I have to do.

"I always train well and I hope that I’ll get more chances to play. I just want to keep on pushing ahead and grow as best I can."

Cristante signed a contract with Milan until June 2018 last year.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the best, insists Jese

    355634_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid youngster Jese Rodriguez has little doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo will win the Fifa Ballon d'Or as he feels the prolific attacker is unquestionably the best in the world.

The Portugal international netted twice in Madrid's 3-0 Liga win over Celta de Vigo on Monday evening to take his tally for the 2013-14 campaign to 20 goals in 17 league appearances and Jese has nothing but praise for his team-mate.

"For all of us, Cristiano Ronaldo is the best and I’m sure he’ll win the Ballon d'Or," the 20-year-old was quoted as saying on the official Madrid website.

Jese then went on to voice his satisfaction with his substitute cameo in the win over Celta, before adding that the stiff competition for places at Madrid is not an issue for him.

"In the first half we struggled a little bit because they were very compact at the back and worked the ball out well. Then [Gareth] Bale and I came on and it made a difference. It is important to help the team, that's the mentality.

"I think there is a healthy competition within the team. You have to respect the coach's decisions and keep working hard. We have the chance to be up there if we do things well."

Jese has netted twice in 10 Liga appearances so far this season.

Walcott injury could cost Arsenal the title - Nicholas

    356760_heroa.jpg

Former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas believes Theo Walcott’s injury lay-off could cost the north Londoners the Premier League title this season.

Walcott was ruled out for six months after rupturing a cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Gunners’ FA Cup tie with Tottenham, which will force the winger to miss the rest of the season and the World Cup.

Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League, a point ahead of Manchester City, but Nicholas believes that no one can replicate Walcott’s impact.

"Arsenal are going to miss him badly," the 52-year-old told Sky Sports. "If Theo had stayed fit until the end of the season, I think he would have got Arsenal the title because his pace can stretch defenders."

"We've got [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back, we've got [Lukas] Podolski back and also the very talented [Serge] Gnabry, who I think will be able to replace Theo in that position, but he will not be able to replace the pace or the goals.

"I know he [Walcott] has always said he wants to play centre-forward, but coming in from the right side, he's learnt to play the position really well over the years.

"His pace was the asset that the team will miss more than anything.

"The longer the season goes on the deeper the teams will get and I think that's the asset that Arsenal are going to miss and the goals they will certainly miss."

Gignac rejects move to unnamed Premier League club

    353237_heroa.jpg

Olmypique de Marseille chairman Vincent Labrune has revealed that striker Andre-Pierre Gignac has rejected a move to an unnamed Premier League club.

The France international has scored eight goals in 17 Ligue 1 fixtures for Jose Anigo’s side this season, who sit in sixth place in the table.

Gignac was rumoured to be a January target for Premier League strugglers West Ham, as the Hammers continue to falter in the absence of the injured Andy Carroll, but the 28-year-old has no intention of moving to England.

"Without giving away any secrets, in the last few weeks he was subject to a fairly large offer from an English club, which he refused," Labrune told RMC.

"We are very happy to continue with him, at least until the end of the season.

"What interests me is what happens on the pitch, that he scores goals and helps us win games.

"We will look at financial considerations in due time."

The Frenchman joined Marseille from Toulouse for €16 million in August 2010, though he has failed to replicate his goal haul from the 2008-09 season, when he topped the goalscoring chart in Ligue 1 with 24 goals.

    'Rossi out for two-to-three months'

    356442_heroa.jpg

Guiseppe Rossi is unlikely to be ready to return to action for "two-to-three months" after sustaining a new knee injury, according to Inter's former club doctor.

Rossi was withdrawn after a challenge from Leandro Rinaudo in Fiorentina's 1-0 win over Livorno on Sunday, though tests later confirmed the player has suffered a knee sprain and not a repeat of the anterior cruciate ligament tear which has blighted his career in the past.

Rossi's agent Federico Pastorello took to Twitter to argue the player could be back within "six or seven weeks" after admitting "we really got away with this one", but Piero Volpi believes the Italy forward will likely be absent until the spring.

"It's correct to assume two to three months out for this kind of injury," Volpi, former chief doctor at Inter and a distinguished sports physician in Italy, told Goal.

"If the results of this morning ruled out any involvement with the cruciate ligament, the one reconstructed with the surgery, it is clear that this is another type of injury that won't affect the previously injured part of the knee."

Volpi believes the psychological blow to Rossi - who had begun to recapture his best form this season after a lengthy spell on the sidelines - will be the biggest hurdle to overcome and claims there should be greater measures taken to control aggression on the pitch.

"It's difficult to recover psychologically after a third serious injury. The good news is that it doesn't affect the cruciate ligament. This will give a boost to Rossi during the recovery process, he will gain new confidence.

"I have seen the footage of the tackle and I have to say that, as it happened, this injury could happen to any player. I don't see a correlation with the past injuries.

"It was a foul in midfield, not in a critical area. We see this too often. These fouls, while acknowledging that Rinaudo didn't want to hurt Rossi, are nonsense.

"It makes no sense to make this type of foul in midfield. In every match we see dozens of such tackles. Aggression and aggravation in today's football should be controlled."

'Di Maria made a mistake' - Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti says Angel Di Maria "made a mistake" if he gestured obscenely towards fans in Monday's win over Celta.

The Argentine winger was replaced with the scored deadlocked at 0-0 and sections of the Santiago Bernabeu vented their frustration with his display by booing him off the pitch - prompting an angry reaction.

Ancelotti claimed he did not see the incident at the time but insists the player made a simple mistake after a frustrating outing for the team and tried to play down the incident.

"I didn't see it. I took him off because I thought it was better to put two fresh players out," said Ancelotti after the match.

"If he made the gesture, nothing happens. It's a mistake, but who doesn't make mistakes? If he responded with a gesture to the crowd then it's another mistake, but life goes on.

"He tried to play, just like everyone else did. Sometimes whistles are positive and afterwards the team improved."

Cristiano Ronaldo passed 400 career goals after scoring twice late on in the 3-0 victory and the Italian coach was thrilled to see him find the net after deploying him alongside Karim Benzema in a striker role.

"We changed for this match. I know Cristiano likes to play wider, but sometimes it's important to play him with Benzema. He scored two goals from an unusual position," Ancelotti added.

The Blancos boss also praised the efforts of youngsters Jese Rodriguez and Dani Carvajal - who both registered assists in the win - and made it clear the three points were crucial as Madrid look to keep pace at the top of La Liga.

"Jese can be one of our most important players even without starting the game," said Ancelotti. "When your opponents are tired it's important to have a fast player.

"Carvajal did great work with his two crosses which led to two goals. Occasionally we need to take risks, they defended deep and were compact.

"The game showed there were problems with our balance and we need to improve. I think it's important at this moment not to allow the gap to the leaders [Barcelona and Atletico Madrid] to increase.

"There are many games in January and we need to keep winning. I'll field the strongest team possible on Thursday [against Osasuna]."

'I'm in love with Robben!' - Guardiola

    332243_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich head coach Pep Guardiola jested he is "in love" with Arjen
Robben and hopes the winger can return to haunt Bundesliga defences swiftly.

The Dutchman, 29, missed the latter stages of the first half of the Bavarians' season with injury, while Bastian Schweinsteiger has struggled intermittently throughout 2013-14.

Guardiola is hopeful that both of the midfielders will be available for Bayern's return to action after the winter break at Borussia Monchengladbach on January 24.

"I'm in love with Arjen!" the former Barcelona boss told reporters on Monday. "I hope he comes back as soon as possible and keeps his good form."I hope that Bastian and Arjen can train with the team before the returning rounds start. Bastian's condition is much, much better, he can run without problems."

Bayern agreed a pre-contract agreement with Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski on Saturday, which will see the Poland international move to the Allianz Arena when his contract expires at the end of June.

Guardiola, who refused to discuss Lewandowski's pending arrival, dismissed speculation that forward Mario Mandzukic would leave the club as a result of the signing.

"Mandzukic is a super, super professional," he added. "He will stay here."

Bosnich urges Man Utd to spend big in January

    356514_heroa.jpg

Mark Bosnich has urged former club Manchester United to spend big in January if they are to save their season and have any chance of retaining the Premier League.

United are currently seventh in the Premier League - winning just half of their opening 20 games - and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Swansea City on Sunday on home turf.

And former goalkeeper Bosnich believes that the Red Devils’ manager David Moyes will have to open up the cheque book if they are to claw back the 11 point deficit on leaders Arsenal.

"Man United’s problems can be traced back to their lack of activity in the transfer window last summer," the Australian told TalkSPORT. "You have to improve your squad every year if you’re going to stay on the top.

"The Glazers, Ed Woodward or whoever is calling the shots, have really got to stand up in this January transfer window and give Moyes funds to get the players he really wants.

"This season is heading towards disaster. They might not finish in the top four. They really need to say: 'this season is salvageable, we might not win the title but we could finish in the top four but we need to identify big players, players of Manchester United’s calibre and spend some money.'"

Bosnich spent two spells at the Old Trafford outfit, playing a total of 33 times under Sir Alex Ferguson, whilst also spending time at fellow Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Chelsea.

:cool:Cristiano Ronaldo reaches 400 career goals with Celta double

    356781_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo reached 400 career goals on Monday thanks to his late double in Real Madrid's 3-0 win at home to Celta in La Liga.

The Portuguese was not at his best as the Blancos struggled to break down the visitors but latched on to dangerous balls from Dani Carvajal and Gareth Bale to net a double late in the game and also saw an effort ruled out for offside in the closing stages.

The 28-year-old, who is favourite to win the Ballon d'Or next week, struck 69 goals in 59 games for club and country in 2013 and his first two this year mean he now has 400 senior strikes in his career.

The ex-Manchester United man currently shares the record for international goals for Portugal with retired striker Pauleta on 47 and has hit 353 club goals over the course of his career, a total which saw him surpass the Brazilian Ronaldo, who netted 352 in his career, on Monday.

The Madeira-born forward's 400 goals have come in 653 games for club and country but, even more impressively, the Portuguese now has 230 in just 221 appearances for Real Madrid.

    Klopp: Subotic making good progress

    356681_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic is making "good progress" from his cruciate ligament injury, according to coach Jurgen Klopp. The Bundesliga side were hit hard by injuries in the first half of the season, losing Subotic as well as other key figures such as Ilkay Gundogan, Marcel Schmelzer and Mats Hummels.

However, Klopp has been boosted by the return to training of Gundogan and Schmelzer, who suffered back and heel injuries respectively, while he is also upbeat regarding Subotic's recovery.

"It's almost like you only need to take the splint away from him, and Neven is able to kick the ball again. Unfortunately, that's not the case yet," Klopp told Dortmund's official website.

"Neven is making good progress. He has another crucial examination on Thursday, and then we will know more about his recovery."We want (Hummels) to use the next two weeks to catch up on his fitness."

Klopp also stated his confidence that striker Robert Lewandowski, who agreed a deal on Saturday to join Bayern Munich when his contract expires at the end of the season, will focus on his current employers for the remainder of the campaign.
"It was (the) best time to do what had to be done, during the winter break," he added."We had known for some time that Robert would leave us. His full focus will now again be on Borussia."

While Jurgen Klopp's men were able to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League, they won just one of their six league matches prior to the mid-campaign break and slipped to fourth in the table.
