Moyes: Liverpool are favourites in Old Trafford crunch clash

    376259_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has suggested Manchester United will go into Sunday's clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford as the underdogs.United will go into the game 11 points off their great rivals and facing a monumental task to finish in the top four and secure Champions League qualification.

After several seasons outside the title fight, Liverpool have launched into the upper echelons this season, and Moyes believes their strong showings, coupled with their lofty league position, make Brendan Rodgers' side favourites.

However, Moyes has backed his players to come good and avenge a 1-0 defeat at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season.

"Their league position suggests they're ahead of us," he told reporters. "They possibly do come here favourites."I don’t know if you will find out a great deal more in these matches from what we've been.

"You know what we are. We are a work in progress. We are looking to make changes in time. But I hope we can show what we are capable of."We are capable of winning these games. The players have shown it to me recently.

"It is a massively important game because of what it means to supporters and it is important to us because we want to keep climbing the table and clawing the points back and see what position we can get ourselves into.

"My biggest goal is not affecting their title challenge, it is to get United winning the title."

Benzema facing fitness battle ahead of Clasico

    379084_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is facing a race to be fit for next weekend's Clasico with Barcelona after picking up an injury against Malaga.

The France international accidentally collided with Cristiano Ronaldo following a cross from Gareth Bale during the first half of the meeting at La Rosaleda.

Benzema was unable to continue and had to be replaced by Angel Di Maria, with the Frenchman suffering clear discomfort in his right leg.

Early indications suggest the damage was a minor impact injury, though Benzema will undergo further tests upon returning to Madrid to see whether or not he could miss next Sunday's home clash with Barcelona.

Ronaldo, who scored the opening goal for his side, was also left nursing a knock but was able to continue.

Speaking after the match, coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed Benzema had suffered "a blow to the muscle" as the striker now faces an anxious wait ahead of next Sunday's encounter.

Madrid won 1-0 on the night against Malaga thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's first-half strike.
    Animo Benz:baffled:

:(:(:(Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool: Gerrard & Suarez embarrass 10-man hosts

    379282hp2.jpg

Steven Gerrard scored twice from the spot as Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Reds skipper converted his first penalty before the break after Rafael handled Luis Suarez's cross inside the box, before doubling his side's advantage after a Phil Jones foul minutes into the second half.

But Gerrard missed the opportunity to become the first ever Premier League player to score a hat-trick of penalty-kicks after Nemanja Vidic was sent off for bringing Daniel Sturridge down in the area.

The 33-year-old picked his spot for the third time of the afternoon but hit the post, although Suarez managed to add a third minutes later.

The result moves Brendan Rodgers' side up to second in the Premier League table, four points off league-leaders Chelsea. United, by contrast, remain seventh - 14 points off Liverpool.

An under-par performance coupled with a further dent to United's European aspirations piles further misery on David Moyes and the Premier League champions, as their Merseyside rivals remain firmly in the hunt for a first league title since the 1989-90 campaign.

Sturridge was quick to showcase his movement if not his finishing prowess early on when he fired wide after just two minutes before Liverpool appeals for a penalty were waved away.

Suarez appeared aggrieved after feeling the clumsy tackles of Jones and then Marouane Fellaini in quick succession warranted spot-kicks - but Clattenburg had other ideas.

Other than Liverpool's early pressing, chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges - Robin van Persie's blocked effort was the best United could produce before Sturridge spurned the opportunity to test David de Gea when he failed to fashion a clean strike on goal after turning Vidic.

Allen did force the Spaniard into a save shortly after, capitalising on Vidic's error to get an effort away on goal, before Rafael handled inside the area to give Liverpool a penalty after Suarez cut in from the left wing.

Gerrard kept his cool to send De Gea the wrong way and hand the visitors a 34th-minute lead - while Rafael will perhaps feel a touch fortunate not to have been given a second yellow card, having already been cautioned for a foul on the Liverpool skipper.

United finished the half on top, Wayne Rooney first seeing a shot saved by Simon Mignolet before the follow-up was well blocked by Martin Skrtel.

But the hosts made the worst possible start to the second half when Jones bundled into Allen, with Gerrard registering 10th Premier League goal of the season with another penalty.
Gerrard was denied a hat-trick when he struck the post from the spot 12 minutes from time, though the victory was complete when Suarez latched on to Sturridge's through-ball to register his 25th league goal of the campaign.

    A convincing victory was complete.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Saint-Etienne: Ibra at the double for Laurent Blanc's men

    379466hp2.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice to reach 40 goals for the season in all competitions as Paris Saint-Germain beat Saint-Etienne 2-0.

Each of the Sweden international's strikes on Sunday came in the first half, with his brace enabling the Ligue 1 leaders to restore their eight-point lead over Monaco at the top of the table.Ibrahimovic has now scored 25 times in the league alone and had opportunities to register his third hat-trick of the campaign.

PSG had to withstand pressure in the second half at the Parc des Princes, with Salvatore Sirigu doing well to keep out Yohan Mollo and Moustapha Sall before Josuha Guilavogui wasted a golden opportunity.

Saint-Etienne were unable to find a way through and missed the chance to close the gap on third-placed Lille, meaning they remain five points off the UEFA Champions League places with nine games remaining.Neither side was able to fashion a chance of note in a scrappy opening to the game, with PSG posing more of a threat in the attacking third without testing Stephane Ruffier.

The visitors created the first clear-cut opportunity after 13 minutes. Franck Tabanou received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and was allowed to turn as the PSG defence stood off, but the attacking midfielder's left-footed shot was pushed away by Salvatore Sirigu.

PSG soon made their opponents pay as Ibrahimovic opened the scoring a minute later, although the goal was not without controversy.

Blaise Matuidi, who appeared to be offside, saw a shot blocked after being played in by Ibrahimovic. The loose ball ran to the Sweden international, who swept home without breaking his stride.Ibrahimovic saw a free-kick deflect wide off the Saint-Etienne wall and missed the target again when mis-timing a volley from six yards out.

He made no mistake on 41 minutes, though, meeting an Edinson Cavani cross to beat Ruffier for a second time.

Saint-Etienne came out all guns blazing in the second half and went close as Mollo forced Sirigu into a close-range save, with Benjamin Corgnet unable to turn in the rebound.

Sirigu was again on hand to keep the visitors at bay on 52 minutes as he parried a shot from Sall, the unmarked defender having fired towards goal from inside the penalty area.Saint-Etienne had another chance to get back into the game just before the hour as Guilavogui met a left-wing free kick from Mollo, only to head over from six yards out.

PSG gradually regained control thereafter and went close to adding a third when Ibrahimovic released Maxwell, but Matuidi was unable to convert the Brazilian's cross.

There was a painful moment for Ibrahimovic when he was clipped from behind by Guilavogui, but the 32-year-old was able to continue after treatment and went on to sting the palms of Ruffier with a late free-kick.

Genoa 0-1 Juventus: Pirlo stunner gives champions the win

    379461hp2.jpg

Andrea Pirlo curled in a stunning 89th-minute free-kick as Juventus claimed a scrappy 1-0 Serie A win at Genoa on Sunday.

It was far from a classic Juventus performance, with the absence of Serie A top scorer Carlos Tevez to injury clearly felt by the visitors, who had goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon save a second-half penalty.

Tevez's replacement, Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, had two goals ruled out for offside during a tame first half, and Juve looked on the verge of just their second league loss this season when Arturo Vidal was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area with 19 minutes left.

Buffon was Juventus' hero though, as he has been so many times throughout his illustrious career, comfortably saving a weak effort from Napoli loanee Emanuele Calaio.Pirlo, who was returning from suspension, then stepped up to score a trademark free-kick that left Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin with no chance.

The reigning Serie A champions' latest victory sees them move 17 points clear of second-placed Roma, who host Udinese on Monday.

Juventus – who brought in Giorgio Chiellini after Andrea Barzagli was injured in the warm-up – were not at their fluent best in a first half dominated by Osvaldo's bad luck.Ex-Bianconeri forward Giuseppe Sculli fired over in the sixth minute before Osvaldo was denied with his side's first real chance.

Sebastian De Maio's attempted clearance hit Fernando Llorente and fell to the Southampton loanee, who dinked over goalkeeper Perin and then tapped in, only to see the offside flag raised.

That decision appeared to be correct, but Osvaldo could feel harshly done by after his second effort was chalked off, just after Andrea Bertolacci wasted a free header for the hosts.

Paul Pogba created the chance with an excellent back-heel and again Osvaldo chipped Perin, only to have his celebrations cut short by another offside decision, though replays suggested he had been level.

Pogba showed his skill when he robbed Stefano Sturaro in possession and fired wide from 20 yards but it was a frustrating start for the champions, who saw their run of being in front at the break in nine successive matches come to an end. After the interval, Bertolacci showed great skill to beat Chiellini before thrashing an effort at Buffon, who was relieved to see Marco Motta's rebound go wide.

Juventus then had a half-hearted penalty appeal turned down, after Llorente fired into the arm of Luca Antonelli from close range, just two minutes before Genoa were awarded a spot-kick.But Buffon was up to the task as substitute Calaio's tame effort to the right was comfortably saved.

And as a dour draw looked likely, Pirlo stepped up to curl a superb 25-yard winner home as Juventus sealed a fifth consecutive league win.

Olympique Lyonnais 2-3 Monaco: Controversial Berbatov strike the difference in five-goal thriller

    379379hp2.jpg

Monaco’s slim hopes of claiming the Ligue 1 title were maintained as they recorded a tight 3-2 success over Olympique Lyonnais at Stade de Gerland on Sunday.Valere Germain opened the scoring for the home side early on before a close-range effort from James Rodriguez took the principality side two goals clear.

Jimmy Briand replied promptly but a controversial strike from Dimitar Berbatov put Claudio Ranieri’s side out of sight before the Lyon striker added his second of the game.

Coming off an emphatic 4-1 Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen on Thursday, Lyon were caught cold at the beginning of this encounter a quick free kick from Fabinho picked out Berbatov, who in turn set up captain Germain to open the scoring.

Matters quickly got worse for the home side as Samuel Umtiti limped off injured, with Gueida Fofana also picking up a problem later on, yet their more immediate concern was Monaco’s second goal, which arrived on 27 minutes through James.

The Colombian’s driving run started the move, which saw Germain centre for the offside Berbatov to pass back to the 22-year-old to score from close range.
Lyon’s response was swift. Miguel Lopes was given plenty of room on the right and his low cross was steered past Danijel Subasic by Briand.

Shortly after the hosts had seen penalty appeals waved away at the beginning of the second half, Berbatov scored a controversial third for the visitors. James was again at the heart of things, slipping a pass through to the Bulgarian, who was again allowed to advance from an offside position to crack a fine finish into the top corner of the net.

Regardless of the score, Lyon pushed forward late on and went close when a terrific Yoann Gourcuff volley flirted with the post.Twelve minutes from the end, Briand reduced the scoreline further. Bakary Kone challenged Subasic for a high cross into the box, and when the ball broke kindly for the striker he rolled it into the corner of the net.

Despite late pressure, Lyon were unable to plunder an equalising goal. Alexandre Lavazette perhaps had the best opportunity, but he shot high over the top from a cross. Gourcuff also had an opportunity with a free kick in the very last minute but his effort crashed straight into the wall.

Monaco are five points behind Paris Saint-Germain, who player later on Sunday against Saint-Etienne, while Lyon are now eight marks off a Champions League berth with only nine matches of the campaign remaining.
