Inter 2-2 Bologna: Visitors dent Nerazzurri's Europa League hopes

    387272hp2.jpg

Diego Milito saw a late penalty saved as Inter's poor run of form continued with a 2-2 home draw against Bologna on Saturday.

Mauro Icardi twice put the Nerazzurri ahead, with a predatory early goal preceding a magnificent second-half strike, but Michele Pazienza and Panagiotis Kone both dispatched rebounds to earn struggling Bologna a share of the spoils.

The result lifts Davide Ballardini's side two points clear of the Serie A relegation zone ahead of Sunday's matches, while Inter are two points behind fourth-placed Fiorentina and without a win in four games, heaping further pressure on coach Walter Mazzarri.

Milito was given a golden chance to win the game with six minutes remaining after Andrea Mantovani was penalised for tugging down Rodrigo Palacio, but Bologna goalkeeper Gianluca Curci dived to his right to repel the striker's spot-kick.

Yuto Nagatomo was one of three players restored to the Inter team and took just five minutes to justify his inclusion. The Japan full-back delivered a low cross from the left, allowing Icardi to get in front of his marker and stab the ball home. It was the 10th Inter goal Nagatomo has been involved in this season.

Another player recalled to the home line-up, Esteban Cambiasso, then saw an acrobatic, goal-bound volley blocked, before Andrea Rannochia - the other man brought in by Mazzarri - headed just wide.

Bologna gave their hosts a scare on 17 minutes when Mantovani's header went just wide, while Palacio cut inside two defenders midway through the first half and unleashed a drive from the edge of the box, which went narrowly past the post.
Ten minutes before half-time, Bologna equalised against the run of play. Gyorgy Garics produced an exquisite back-heeled nutmeg on the right and cut the ball back for Lazaros Christodoulopoulos.

Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic did well to repel the Greece midfielder's shot with his feet, but Pazienza drove the rebound down the middle of the goal and the Slovenian was unable to make a second save.

Shortly after the restart, Danilo D'Ambrosio broke down the right and fired low across Curci's goal and Palacio, sliding in at the back post, was just short of making contact with.Garics broke away from the Inter defence just after the hour mark, but his shot from the edge of the box failed to trouble Handanovic.

Almost immediately afterwards, Icardi showed him how to score from 20 yards, masterfully curling the ball beyond the despairing dive of Curci and in off the inside of the post.

Inter's lead nevertheless lasted just 10 minutes. Mikael Antonsson swung a high cross into the box from the left, which Cambiasso and Rolando failed to deal with, and when the ball bounced off the latter's chest, Kone fired the loose ball home.
The Albania-born Greece international had scored Bologna's goal in the 1-1 draw with Inter earlier this season. After 83 minutes, Mantovani brought down Palacio, who had his back to goal, in the area and the hosts had the chance to win it from the spot. However, Curci came to Bologna's rescue.

Substitute Robert Acquafresca could even have snatched a dramatic winner for the visitors, only to be denied by a fine double save from Handanovic right at the end.

Real Sociedad 0-4 Real Madrid: Comfortable win keeps Los Blancos in title race

    387240hp2.jpg

Real Madrid overcame a poor first-half showing to eventually run out 4-0 winners at Real Sociedad and keep pace at the top of La Liga.

With title rivals Atletico Madrid and Barcelona both winning earlier on Saturday, Carlo Ancelotti's men came into the game under pressure to respond, and they did just that by grinding out an important victory.

In a largely disjointed first half, they were grateful to ex-Sociedad man Asier Illarramendi - in the side in place of the rested Cristiano Ronaldo - who tapped home from close range at the end of the first period after Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had saved an initial effort from Karim Benzema.

The midfielder chose not to celebrate the goal against his former employers, although it came as a much-needed boost for Ancelotti's side heading into the break.

Madrid were much improved in the second period and midway through the half Gareth Bale took advantage of Bravo's poor kick to smash a low finish into the bottom left-hand corner from 30 yard.In the final stages, Pepe added a third before substitutes Angel Di Maria and Alvaro Morata combined, the latter slotting home to seal the victory.

The result leaves them two points behind Barca and three adrift of leaders Atletico with six matches to go while the loss puts a severe dent in the hosts European ambitions.

The two sides immediately above them, Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao, play on Sunday and Monday respectively, with Sociedad level on points with Sevilla but still six adrift of Bilbao in the final Champions League qualifying spot.

The visitors survived a scare in the 16th minute when Diego Lopez brilliantly denied Carlos Vela's close-range effort, although the strike would not have counted anyway as the as the assistant referee had - incorrectly - ruled the Mexican to be in an offside position.Six minutes later, Vela was involved again, this time sending in an inviting cross from the left that Antoine Griezmann glanced just over the crossbar.

Illarramendi gave Madrid a lead they scarcely deserved on the stroke of half-time, reacting quickest to tap in the rebound after Bravo had parried Benzema's fiercely-struck shot.

The advantage was almost doubled within four minutes of the restart, Sergio Ramos thumping a header against the crossbar after meeting Xabi Alonso's free-kick from the right.Alonso posed a threat from another set-piece eight minutes later, curling in a 25-yard free-kick that Bravo was equal to low to his left.

The visitors were denied by the woodwork again in the 65th minute, Benzema rattling the frame of the goal with a rasping left-footed shot that left Bravo helpless.
A minute later, Bale put the result beyond doubt, firing home after Bravo's mis-cued kick out of his hands fell perfectly at the Welshman's feet before Madrid killed the game and added gloss to the scoreline late on.

Five minutes from time, Pepe turned home Ramos' headed knockdown from a corner before Morata added the fourth with two minutes left, as Madrid extended their unbeaten run against their opponents to 14 matches.

I should have smashed up the dressing room, says Mazzarri

    387317_heroa.jpg

Walter Mazzarri says he should have "smashed up" the dressing room at half-time as his Inter side were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bologna.

Michele Pazienza and Panagiotis Kone struck to cancel out Mauro Icardi's two goals on Saturday, before Diego Milito missed a penalty for Inter seven minutes from time. The result left the hosts in fifth place in Serie A and without a win in four games, and Mazzarri felt that the breaks had gone against them - while lamenting his decision not to fire up his side at the interval.

"It's incredible, we seem to be missing clear chances and even managed to miss the only penalty we've received all season, despite a champion like Milito taking the responsibility," Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia.

"Maybe we're just so out of practice that we never score them. It was logical that Diego Milito would take the penalty, as he's always taken them and he had fresh legs, unlike Rodrigo Palacio at that stage of the game.

"I wouldn't say we were unlucky, but incidents went against us. Bologna's first goal went through a sea of legs, the second went in because Rolando slipped over.

"At the moment, everything is happening like this. What are the odds of having a penalty after 33 games and not scoring it? It's just one of those periods where we pay the price for every single mistake. We analyse everything and correct errors in training, but we concede these strange goals.

"In Verona (a 2-0 win over Hellas last month), I shouted at the players at half-time to raise the adrenaline, as every now and then we lose concentration and intensity. We ended up winning."I regret telling the players [here] they were in control and to stay calm. I should have smashed up the locker room!

"These players need to be shaken up and have the adrenaline kept to a maximum."
Despite the draw, Inter remain in contention for a Europa League qualifying spot, but with Parma, Atlanta, Hellas and Lazio all within five points, Mazzarri knows his side could still miss out on European football next season. He added: "As we are Inter and must always try to win, it can happen that we take the lead and then this fear sets in, as these are very young players. They feel the pressure after recent results.

"For those who saw the games all season, they'd think we deserve Europe. For those who saw the last four games they might think we didn't."Football is not an exact science, so even a strong side might not qualify for Europe."

"Real Madrid will fight until the end" - Carlo Ancelotti

    385329_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti praised his Real Madrid players for their performance in the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad and vowed to fight for the title until the last weeks of the season.

Los Blancos recovered from a poor first-half display to hammer the Basque club and remain three points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid, with goals coming from Asier Illarramendi, Gareth Bale, Pepe and Alvaro Morata.

And Ancelotti said he is delighted with the way his team are playing at the moment and praised them for their fighting spirit.

“The victory strengthens us and the team. We will fight until the last game,” the Italian told reporters after the game

“I appreciate the whole game because we played very well, very intelligently. I’m very happy.

"It wasn’t easy but I have a team that likes to fight. I’m proud to coach this team. Gareth Bale is comfortable on the left and he and Cristiano often change positions.
“We had to avoid injury so I rested Cristiano. My second concern was the physical aspect of the team.“We defended very well and had to be very organized."

Camp Nou expansion gets green light from Barca members

    361279_heroa.jpg

Members at Barcelona have voted in favour of plans to increase the capacity of the team's Camp Nou home, the club has announced.

A total of 27,161 club members, representing 72.36 per cent of those who voted, backed the New Espai Barca proposal, which recommends lifting the capacity of the club's stadium to around 105,000 and a complete overhaul of other facilities.

Before announcing the results of the vote on Saturday evening, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu told Barca TV: "Without a doubt, today was a manifestation of the club's democratic values."I'm very satisfied. It's a great day, a democratic festival for the Barca members. Voting made me very happy, as did seeing so many votes cast by members. It's a huge project that will improve the club for years to come.”

The referendum on the project was the first to be held at the club since 1950, with Bartomeu hailing the importance of the event. He continued: "The most important thing is that the members decide (the future of the club) in a massive way. We should give an example of our democratic values, and the whole world will see it.

"The members have given me strength. We will continue to work very hard like we always have and we continue to solve problems."Details of the project's timings are due to be released at the end of the season.

Salah earns Mourinho praise after Stoke strike

    387279_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho lauded Mohamed Salah as one for the future after the midfielder marked his full Chelsea debut with a goal.

The Egyptian opened the scoring in a 3-0 win against Stoke at Stamford Bridge on Saturday before goals from Frank Lampard and Willian secured the three points that sent Chelsea back to the top of the Premier League.Salah, whose signing from Basel coincided with Juan Mata's departure for Manchester United, is just 21 and Mourinho believes that Chelsea have secured a promising talent.

"I think Chelsea did very well. We sold a player [Juan Mata]...in the best moment of his career and we bought a kid from a different habitat, an Egyptian player playing in Switzerland," Chelsea boss Mourinho said."We knew that the kid was going to need time. We know that the next season he will be a real good player for us.

"This season step by step, he starts playing, 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there, he came on against Newcastle, he came on against Arsenal, against Crystal Palace."Today he had the first chance to play [from the start] and I think one thing you feel immediately is the connection between him and the crowd; they like him, they like his style of play and he is player that we need.

"We have wingers who like to have the ball at their feet he is the kind of winger who prefers it in the space."Chelsea did very, very well to bring him in."

The result helped to ease the pain of back-to-back losses for Chelsea, who were beaten 1-0 at Crystal Palace in the Premier League before suffering a 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first-leg of their Champions League last-eight tie.

Dortmund will have other Lewandowskis, says Klopp

    386622_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Robert Lewandowski but is confident that Borussia Dortmund can cope when he leaves for Bayern Munich.

The Polish striker put in a man-of-the-match performance for the Bundesliga side during the 2-1 win over Wolfsburg on Saturday to ease BVB towards a Champions League place.

His long-awaited free transfer to the Allianz Arena was confirmed back in January but Klopp is confident that other players can step into the void he leaves.

"Robert has developed so much, but other players can and will do that at this club," he told reporters.

"It was a big win today. We showed a really good mentality to win it after a Champions League match. On Tuesday, we need to play like we did in the second-half twice.

Kevin Grosskreutz has played in a variety of different positions this term and Klopp is thankful for how the Germany international has coped.

"We ask a lot of Kevin, playing in so many positions. He got much better as the game went on."

Meanwhile, Marco Reus believes his side could come unstuck if they play against Real Madrid in midweek as they did in the first half, as they look to overturn a 3-0 deficit from the first-leg.

"The game in Madrid took a lot out of us and we didn't play well in the first half. But it was really great to win.

"If we play against Real Madrid as we did in the first half today, it will be tough, but anything is possible."

Reus' opportunistic winner came after Wolfsburg keeper Max Grun spilled the ball, much to the youngster's dismay, but the former Gladbach man insists he committed no infringement.

"Sometimes the keeper and defender get in each other's way," he added.

    Blanc: Everybody thinking about Chelsea

    386342_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain boss Laurent Blanc has admitted that his players are already thinking about their Champions League trip to Chelsea on Tuesday.

The French champions recorded an easy 3-0 win over Reims at the Parc des Princes thanks to a strike from Edinson Cavani and two Aissa Mandi own-goals.

They also hold a 3-1 advantage over Jose Mourinho's men in the Champions League quarter-finals and Blanc is looking forward to the return leg.

"Every game has its worth, but it was placed before a Champions League match which everyone is thinking about," he told reporters.

"It is never easy to approach these games with the right mindset. It's a very good thing to have won this match. It's worth three points and, in our position, we cannot lose points at home."

PSG's clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge kicks off at 20:45CET on Tuesday.

Courtois ready to 'suffer' for Liga title

    386549_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois says his team-mates will all be willing to suffer in the final weeks of the Liga run-in.

Diego Simeone's side will end the weekend on top of the table thanks to a tight 1-0 win over Villarreal at the Vicente Calderon.

The Belgium international is preparing for a tough finish to the season says he will not become distracted by looking too far ahead in the title race.

"We go from game to game," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"From now on we will all suffer because we are at the end of La Liga, but we have to do it."

Courtois also denied that his side had run out of steam after their 1-1 draw against Barcelona at Camp Nou in the Champions League in midweek.

"It was a tough game. We took the lead but then we noticed that we were tired. I don't think we're out of gas but Tuesday's game was very compicated and we saw that today."

:shocked:Hazard: If my wife tells me to go to PSG I'd consider it

    386280_heroa.jpg

Chelsea star Eden Hazard has revealed he would consider joining Paris Saint-Germain if his wife insisted on moving to the French capital.

Hazard provided Chelsea's only beacon of light in their 3-1 defeat at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening, scoring a penalty and hitting the post with a volley.

Much of the build-up to the match was dominated by PSG's reported interest in signing Hazard this summer, with boss Laurent Blanc admitting his admiration for the Belgian.

And Hazard told French documentary series Interieur Sport: "If my wife tells me to go to Paris then I'll have to take this into consideration."

The Belgian was also very complimentary about the Parc des Princes, adding: "The Parc des Princes is a real stadium and a special place where I've known my first sensations as a player."

:yes:Mata has improved Manchester United, says Moyes

    387162_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss David Moyes lavished praise on Juan Mata, saying he has improved the club, after the playmaker's brace helped the champions to a 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

Moyes smashed his club's transfer record during the January transfer window to bring Mata to Old Trafford from Chelsea. The Spain international failed to find the net in his first nine appearances for the reigning champions but opened his account in last weekend's 4-1 home triumph over Aston Villa.

He doubled that tally with a sublime first half free-kick at St James' Park, added a second after the interval and rounded off matters with a cute backheel that allowed Adnan Januzaj to complete the scoring.

"I think Juan Mata's played really well and I think he's made us better," Moyes told reporters."He hasn't had the goals in the early games but I think he played fine. Recently he's started getting the goals and, more importantly, the assists as well.

"I think, over the last two seasons in the Premier League, Juan Mata was one of the best assist-makers."He's always got himself a good tally of goals and we needed that. He's coming up with the goods now."

The Scot also paid tribute to Shinji Kagawa who was handed a chance on Tyneside as Moyes made eight changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night - casting an eye towards next week's return leg in Germany.

"Shinji played well," Moyes added. "Maybe a bit slow at the start but I thought as the game gathered momentum he was influential."

Mourinho: Title is out of Chelsea's hands

    383966_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho is adamant the title race is out of Chelsea's hands despite Saturday's 3-0 win over Stoke at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Frank Lampard and Willian moved Mourinho's men back to the Premier League summit but the Portuguese knows that the Blues are still relying on other results to go their way.Liverpool can regain top spot by beating West Ham on Sunday, and Mourinho still has to take his side to Anfield before the season is over.

"I keep saying that we don't depend only on ourselves and we never did," the Chelsea manager told Sky Sports. "I was waiting to be top of the league and depending on ourselves but that has never happened. We depend too much on other results.

"We have to play Liverpool so we have three points to discuss with them but with Manchester City we don't play them, so they have it in their hands."Mourinho was pleased with the reaction of his under-fire charges at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after defeats to PSG and Crystal Palace.

"They played well," he added. "Normally after defeats you don't start very confidently and that's what happened. "But we finished the first half 1-0 and it could have been two or three because we played well in the last 20-25 minutes of the first half.

"The second goal [arrived] and the game is over, everything was under control.
"It is a good victory and it's what we have to do until the end of the season. We have five matches in the Premier League and we have to win five."
