Arsenal contact Van Gaal due to Wenger uncertainty

    388699_heroa.jpg

Arsenal have made contact with Louis van Gaal amid ongoing uncertainty over the future of Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners remain confident that Wenger will sign a two-year contract extension agreed last October but know he will quit as manager if the team fail to meet his targets over the next month.

As revealed, the Frenchman has told friends he is considering bringing an end to his 18-year Gunners reign if they do not win the FA Cup and finish in the top four of the Premier League.

One of several "short-term" contingency plans being explored by Arsenal is luring Van Gaal to north London when his contract with Holland expires after the World Cup.

Van Gaal has already held talks with a delegation from Manchester United and has had three meetings with Tottenham but it is understood that the Dutchman has rejected the opportunity to replace Tim Sherwood at Spurs at the end of the season.Van Gaal is now keeping his options open as he awaits developments at both United and Arsenal.

Intriguingly, three of his former backroom staff, all Dutchmen, have recently taken on jobs at the Arsenal academy following a restructuring of the club’s youth set-up.
Andries Jonker, who will replace the retiring Liam Brady as academy director in the summer, worked alongside Van Gaal at Bayern Munich and Barcelona as well as at the Dutch FA.

Jan van Loon, who will manage the Under-16s, and Frans de Kat, who will coach the Under-18, both worked with Van Gaal at the Dutch FA. The Dutch trio will all start on July 1.Despite considering Van Gaal, losing Wenger would be a huge blow to Arsenal chiefs, who have continued to give the Frenchman their unwavering support.

The results of the last four matches of the season, which culminate in the FA Cup final against Hull City on May 17, are now set to determine whether Wenger formally commits to a deal that would extend his reign to a remarkable 20 years.
There are not expected to be wholesale changes to the backroom team should Wenger make the shock decision to call time on his Arsenal tenure.

Long-standing ally Boro Primorac, fitness coach Tony Colbert and goalkeeping coach Gerry Peyton would be likely to follow Wenger out of the exit door but assistant manager Steve Bould, first-team coach Neil Banfield and the rest of the senior medical and technical staff would be expected to stay on.

All of the senior staff have agreed deals that mirror Wenger’s and run until 2016, while more junior members of Wenger's backroom team are on 12-month rolling contracts. It is understood the agreements are all in place and are waiting on Wenger to be formalsly rubberstamped.

:(Silva stretchered off with ankle injury during West Brom clash

    365246_heroa.jpg

David Silva was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher after suffering an ankle injury during Manchester City's clash with West Brom on Monday evening.

The Spain midfielder fell to the floor in pain and clutched his right ankle following a challenge with Morgan Amalfitano in the second half at the Etihad Stadium.

Silva was initially a doubt for the match after missing City's 2-2 draw with Sunderland last Wednesday due to a foot injury.

Earlier in the match, Sergio Aguero was substituted after just 64 minutes and was visibly limping towards the touchline before being replaced by Stevan Jovetic.

City raced into the lead against West Brom following strikes from Pablo Zabaleta and Aguero inside the opening 10 minutes. Graham Dorrans pulled a goal back for the visitors but Martin Demichelis netted from close range before the break to restore City's two-goal cushion.

its always nice to watch him play. he played last few games with a pin in his ankle. hope he will be back soon

Liverpool were 'seconds' from financial ruin, reveals Ayre

    394348_heroa.jpg

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has revealed the club were "seconds" away from financial ruin before John W Henry completed his takeover of the club.

The American, heading Fenway Sports Group, bought the club for €364 million in 2010 after the current Premier League leaders faced administration under previous owners Tom Hicks and Tom Gillett.

And Ayre admits the current forecast of success the club is enjoying - with a return to the Champions League confirmed and a first league title since 1990 in their sights - could easily have not materialised.

"I do not think there was a Liverpool fan in the city or anywhere who was not worried we would not get to this position, for many reasons. It was more to do with the governance of the club," he told reporters.

"It is no secret, it's like that TV programme 'Seconds from Disaster' - we were sort of in that vein. It was horrific to see the football club in that state. People sometimes forget how bad it was. I speak to people now and they have really short memories.

"When you think about that day when we tipped it over the edge and finally pulled it back we have come such a long way. It's easy to say it's about time we are back in the Champions League.

"But if you think about where we were financially, just because you are Liverpool FC it does not mean you have a right to get back up there. There are plenty of teams who could have slipped and slipped, despite new owners.

"So it's an unbelievable achievement to get back where we are. As one of the few people who was here with the last ownership and through this one, the club is in a fantastically sustainable position now."

The takeover was finally resolved via the High Court, but Hicks and Gillett launched a lawsuit against FSG the following year which was settled out of court.

Ayre continued: "The hardest thing after the event was the previous owners never felt the right thing had been done but it was the right thing.

"We went from the court ruling, two years of scrapping via lawyers. One of the biggest parts of the court case was they said we could not legally make the transaction. John W Henry was waiting for the ruling to do the deal. It was horrific."

Benfica have quality to eliminate Juventus, insists Lima

    395083_heroa.jpg

Benfica forward Lima is confident that the Portuguese champions have the quality to eliminate Juventus in the Europa League semi-finals after their 2-1 home win in the first leg on Thursday.

Jorge Jesus' men went 1-0 up early on when Ezequiel Garay headed home a corner kick, only for Carlos Tevez to restore parity in the second half, before Lima eventually helped the hosts to victory with a thumping late strike.

The 30-year-old is confident the newly-crowned Portuguese champions can seal the deal in Turin next week having proven their calibre against Antonio Conte's men.

"We will go to Turin as a united team to try to go through with humility. We have the quality and the ability to achieve that," Lima told uefa.com.

"We were not expecting to concede a goal but it happened. We must acknowledge that this was no ordinary opponent. It was Juventus.

"But the important thing is that we won and we have an advantage. Once again we won at home and showed the strength of our squad. Now we will go to Italy with a positive spirit."

The return at Juventus Stadium takes place on May 1.

Ribery must move on from Ballon d'Or disappointment, says Kahn

    394671_heroa.jpg

Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has urged Franck Ribery to "move on" from his Ballon d'Or disappointment and focus on helping the club's trophy charge this season.

The France international has been struggling to find his best form ever since Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo beat him to the prestigious individual trophy in January, and was withdrawn after an hour of lacklustre play as Bayern were beaten 1-0 by Ronaldo's side on Wednesday.

Kahn has called on Ribery to put the team's success ahead of his own individual recognition as Pep Guardiola attempts to make history with the European champions.

"It's been ages since the Ballon d'Or. Of course, it is hard for a sensitive player like him not to win the Ballon d'Or after winning the treble, but you should be able to move on at some stage," Kahn writes in his column for Bild.

"I mean, what are we talking about really... The Ballon d'Or is an individual thing. It shouldn't be about the individual Franck Ribery, but it should be about Bayern Munich and what the club can achieve.

"They can achieve something that's never been done before: successfully defending the treble. You will have to put the team's interests ahead of any personal issues, but that's not easy for Ribery.

"The atmosphere is very important to him. You have to communicate a lot with him and give him attention. It's always hard to say what's going on inside him, but he's the one who could make the difference."

Ribery has netted 15 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions for Bayern so far this term.

Schneiderlin will not 'force a transfer'

    395212_heroa.jpg

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has vowed to "never force a transfer" if the club do not wish to sell him.

The Frenchman has reportedly been the subject of interest from reigning Premier League champions Manchester United and Arsenal this season after catching the eye with some impressive displays in the top flight.

Schneiderlin is aware that other clubs are keeping check on Southampton's highly-rated stars, but the 24-year-old is not looking to engineer a move.

"We know top teams are watching us," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

"As long as we don't receive a concrete offer, and as long as the club says they won't sell, I will never force a transfer."

Schneiderlin moved to St Mary's in June 2008 and has been with Southampton throughout their rise from League One to the Premier League.

He has been a mainstay in Southampton's first team this season, making 31 league appearances.

Giggs: Man Utd appointment my proudest moment

    article-2612987-1D57DE4900000578-252_634x449.jpg

Manchester United interim manager Ryan Giggs insists Saturday's game against Norwich will represent the proudest moment of his illustrious career.

The 40-year-old, who has enjoyed a glittering playing career at Old Trafford that has spanned three decades, is set to take charge of the team for the first time at the weekend following the sacking of David Moyes earlier this week.
Giggs will take control of first team affairs until the end of the season and revealed at his first press conference that he has sought the advice of Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager under whom he has played for the overwhelming majority of his career.

He said: "I have got to say it is the proudest moment of my life. I have supported Manchester United all my life, I have been a part of the club since I was 13. I am proud, I am happy, a little nervous and, just like playing, can't wait for the game on Saturday.

"When Ed [Woodward] asked me to look after the team for the remaining four games, I had no hesitation in saying yes.

"I can't wait for five thirty tomorrow when we walk out at Old Trafford. I know the place will be rocking."

United sacked Moyes on Tuesday morning after a disappointing campaign that has seen the Premier League champions drop to seventh in the league table.

The Red Devils cannot qualify for next year's Champions League and will finish the year trophyless - with the exception of the Community Shield - but Giggs believes he can still rely on the players at his disposal.

He added: "I've told the players 'I trust you and I know what you're capable of. Go out there and show it,'" before confirming that he has a full-strength squad aside from Robin van Persie and Rafael to choose from.

"The players have looked great all week, they've looked sharp."

Ancelotti: Bale could miss Osasuna clash

    394684_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that Gareth Bale could miss this weekend's La Liga match against Osasuna as he is still recovering from a bout of flu.

The former Tottenham Hotspur star was benched for the first leg of Madrid's Champions League semi-final tie against Bayern Munich in midweek and Ancelotti admits he could opt to rest the Welshman before the visit to the Allianz Arena next week, where los Blancos will defend a 1-0 lead.

"Bale is still feeling a little weak after his illness," the Italian stated at a press conference on Friday.

"We will make a final decision on Saturday about whether he will play against Osasuna or if we will prepare him for Tuesday's return instead."

There was better news regarding Cristiano Ronaldo, however, with Ancelotti revealing the Portugal star has shaken off his injury problems and will feature on Saturday in a bid to bolster his match fitness.

"Cristiano did well against Bayern. He needs to play games in order to get back to his best again and he will play on Saturday," he said.

The Madrid coach admits his side were left drained by their win over Bayern but has stressed he will not make too many changes to the steam against Osasuna as they look to keep their slim title hopes alive.

"We want to recover energy to make sure we win all games. The match against Bayern cost us a lot of energy, but we hope to be ready for Osasuna.

"We will make a few changes, but not too many because it is a crucial game for us."
