Rooting a Sony Phone is not that hard. I have a Xperia Arc and I rooted mine like a year ago with Cyanogenmod. The process is easy 4 steps. But you have to be careful. But I guarantee that the chance of a hardware damage is very low. These are the steps to do. Google them or go to XDA developers forum. And there're some youtube tutorials.

1. Unlock Bootloader

2. Flash the Kernel
Flashing the Kernal can be done after you unlock the boot loader. For this you can use Fastboot. It's a very small tool which can be used by command prompt.

3. Install the ROM
Use Cyanogenmod, it's very common and very stable. You can download the ROMs for ur phone from their site. Ur phone's nickname in CM is "Urushi"

4. Install G-apps
The default installation doesn't have Google services (Google Play) for that you need to install it manually. You can find gapps very easily. But install the correct ones for the ROM.

Man hithanne Boot loader unlock allowed unata boot loader eka unlock wela nethuwa athi. Kokatath sony site ekata gihin boot loader eka unlock karanna. Meeta kalin phone ekata custom rom ekak dala thibbe neththam boho durata Boot loader eka locked. ROM to ROM kernel eka wenas. E nisa ROM ekata adala kernal eka flash karanna oni. Neththam ROM eka hariyata boot wenne na.
