'It's a dream come true' - Herrera delights in Manchester United move

    428252_heroa.jpg

Ander Herrera has described his move from Athletic Bilbao to Manchester United as a "dream come true".

The Spanish midfielder becomes Louis van Gaal's first signing as manager at Old Trafford and has penned a four-year deal with the Red Devils.

Herrera has starred for Athletic in La Liga since joining the club from Real Zaragoza in 2011 and was strongly linked with a move to United last summer.

"Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true," he told the club's official website. "I have played at Old Trafford for Athletic Club in the Uefa Europa League and it was one of the highlights of my career so far.

"I have joined United to do all I can to help the team reach the club's objectives. Having arrived on Tuesday, I’m excited to now be living in Manchester and I can’t wait for my first game in United’s famous red shirt.

"I will never forget my time with Athletic Club and I’d like to thank the fans and staff for all their support and, above all, wish all my fantastic former team-mates all the best for the future.”

Van Gaal's new assistant, Ryan Giggs, believes United have secured the services of one of the most talented young players in La Liga to bolster their midfield.

"Ander is a fantastic young player, with great energy and creativity," Giggs said. "We believe him to be one of the brightest young prospects in Spain and I am certain he will be a big hit with the United fans.

"I’m delighted he has made the decision to come to Manchester and play his part in the club’s future. I’m looking forward to seeing him in action on our summer tour to America."

Luke Shaw set for Manchester United medical

    415840_heroa.jpg

Southampton full-back Luke Shaw is set for a medical at Manchester United ahead of a summer move to Old Trafford.

The England youngster flew into Manchester Airport on Wednesday with the rest of his international team-mates following their premature exit from the World Cup and is set to finalise the terms of his much-anticipated transfer.

United have beaten off stiff competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham for the 18-year-old by offering the left-back an astonishing financial package.

Shaw will be handed a deal worth £160,000-a-week that will make him the highest paid teenager in world football. United had been hoping to complete the transfer before the World Cup but were hindered by Southampton's own pursuit of a new manager.

Ronald Koeman was duly appointed as Mauricio Pochettino's successor earlier this month and the south coast club are now expected to accept an offer of around £27 million for a player with just three senior international caps to his name.

Dempsey: United States deserved to make the last 16

    429267_heroa.jpg

Clint Dempsey insisted the United States fully deserved to progress to the second round of the World Cup despite losing to Germany.

Jurgen Klinsmann's side fell to a 1-0 defeat in Recife after Thomas Muller's second-half strike, but qualified for the knockout stages due to a superior goal difference compared to that of Portugal.

However, speaking to Goal after the game, Dempsey was adamant the United States had earned the right to stay in the tournament and spoke of the need to re-focus ahead of their last-16 clash.

"We're not happy with the result in terms of losing the game," the 31-year-old said.
"But I think we deserve to go through to the next round and we're excited about the possibility of getting to the knockout stages, which is what we always wanted to do. The fact that we were able to get out of a very difficult group shows the belief that we have in ourselves."Everything is fresh again. It doesn't matter what you did to get out of the group stages, it's about what you're going to do on that day.

"You know in the back of your mind that a draw gets you through. It's not like a normal game because there are a lot of factors that play into it."Recife was hit by torrential rain on Thursday, which left roads flooded ahead of the United States' clash with Germany, and Dempsey admitted that the consequences of the unusual conditions had an affect on his concentration during the match.

"It was weird conditions because of the rain and not having a proper warm-up," the Seattle Sounders midfielder added."On the field you're having to go behind the goal, not being able to do a possession game and not being able to get shots on goal. It was just a weird preparation.

"And also in the back of your mind you think about your family not being able to make it to the game because of the traffic and everything, and you just want to make sure they're safe. There were just a lot of factors going into today's game that made it a difficult one for both teams."

'Now I can say how I feel about referees,' fumes Capello

    429447_heroa.jpg

Fabio Capello accused referees of being against his Russia side as they crashed out of the World Cup following a 1-1 draw with Algeria.

Aleksandr Kokorin's header gave his side a first-half lead before the Desert Foxes struck back through Sofiane Feghouli to ensure that they progressed at the expense of their opponents.

Capello was extremely unhappy with some of the officiating that took place during the game, citing the Algerian equaliser where Akinfeev had a laser pointer shone in his eyes as the ball came into the box as an example of how decisions have not gone his side's way.

"We could have won," the 68-year-old was quoted by Sovsport.

"But, unfortunately, we let in the goal. There was no whistle there. I kept silent when asked about the referees before. But now we can say what we want.

"For 10 minutes our goalkeeper was dazzled by a laser pointer! There is photo and video evidence. This is a fact, there is no other opinion. There was a goalkeeper with this beam in his eyes. And then he missed the ball.

"I can complain about the refereeing in the match with Belgium," he added referring to a penalty claim in the 1-0 defeat.

"I'm not looking for excuses in life. If played poorly, then I'll say so. But then Akinfeev was dazzled by a pointer. You've seen it all!"

Russia were looking to build on a disastrous Euro 2012 campaign, where they also exited as the group stages, but Capello insisted that they should look ahead to hosting the World Cup in 2018 with him still at the helm.

"Today we made no errors," he continued.

"But we failed. Their goalkeeper twice reflected heavy shots. We're packing our bags because we made some minor mistakes.

"Of course I want to continue my work with Russia if they want me. I've done good work. I took England to the World Cup after they missed Euro 2008 and I've taken Russia to their first World Cup in 12 years."

Algeria can still do better, says Halilhodzic

    427502_heroa.jpg

Algeria made history on Thursday night as they progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup, but head coach Vahid Halilhodzic believes there is still room for improvement.

A 1-1 draw against Russia was sufficient to see the North African side through as Group H’s runners up, with Islam Slimani’s second-half header levelling after an early strike from Alexandr Kokorin, but the former PSG coach is seeking more from his team.

“I think we can do things much better and why not? Maybe we will against Germany,” he told the press.

“We received a lot of support and we have fewer supporters than Germany, but I hope a lot of people will cheer for us - I know you Brazilians love football and we can satisfy you.

“We are not at the level of Brazil but we will try to do everything to attract Brazilian fans in Porto Alegre.”

Algeria are the only international side Germany have faced more than once and never beaten, with the Fennecs winning both previous meetings, including a famous success at World Cup 1982

“That was a long time ago,” Halilhodzic said. “I’m proud of what we have done tonight. Algeria played a great match and qualification for the next stage is deserved.”

“Give me some time to enjoy today's match. I don't want to think of Germany right now but I know it will be more than complicated.”

Reflecting on his side’s decisive group match, he was pleased with the manner his team responded to the early blow Russia gave them.

“I told them to be organised, not to panic and not to concede a second goal,” he explained.

“We needed to control the ball more quickly and move it a lot. The pitch was not in the best state, so I told them to get the ball and pass is fast. Physically my players are very tired.”

    Blame me, I don't care - Akinfeev

    429428_heroa.jpg

Igor Akinfeev has admitted that Russia deserved to suffer a World Cup exit and must accept any criticism that comes their way after drawing with Algeria.

The Russians took the lead through Aleksandr Kokorin's header but went out of the tournament after Islam Slimani's strike earned the North Africans a 1-1 draw.
Akinfeev acknowledged that the result was beneath the expectations put on his team and stressed that he was ready to take any stern critique that would be directed at them.

"Any defeat is deserved," the CSKA shot-stopper told journalists after the game.
"We understand that now a barrage of criticism will be poured on us but, honestly, we can take it because strong people need to be able to take a hit.

"There's no desire to talk about the quality of our football - we didn't attain the result we wanted. I repeat, we will need to pay attention to those people who... I don't even know what the word is. We need to go on and enjoy our football careers as much as we can."

Akinfeev had a laser pointer directed in his eyes as the ball came in for Slimani's equaliser, but the CSKA man keeper refused to use that as an excuse for his team's failure.

"The referees drew attention to the laser pointers but nothing changed," he continued.

"They continued to shine them. Algeria, though, are a great team - they had a number of excellent shots, even in the first half. If you talk about mistakes, you can talk about anyone. Let them write about the goalkeeper - I don't care."

Injured Aguero could miss rest of World Cup

    428843_heroa.jpg

Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of his side's second-round clash against Switzerland next week and could miss the rest of the competition, Goal understands.

Aguero recovered from a muscle problem in time to start the World Cup, but has looked short of full fitness in Brazil and picked up a similar injury in the first half of his side's 3-2 win over Nigeria on Wednesday.

The Manchester City striker underwent treatment to begin his recovery that very night after it was confirmed he suffered a grade-one muscle tear in his left thigh, Argentina team doctor Daniel Martinez revealed on Thursday, but the 26-year-old already been ruled out of the game against Switzerland.

"We have some alternatives [in terms of treatment] and we'll evaluate them depending on how his recovering is going," Martinez told reporters after Argentina's training session in Belo Horizonte.

"We have all the necessary resources to get Sergio back as soon as possible, but we will assess him on a day-to-day basis after the Switzerland game."

If Argentina get past Switzerland, Alejandro Sabella's side will face either Belgium or USA in the quarter-finals on July 5, with a possible semi-final against Netherlands, Mexico, Costa Rica or Greece four days later, before the final in Rio de Janeiro on July 13.

Recovery time for Aguero's injury is usually between two to three weeks, making the 26-year-old a big doubt for the remainder of the competition.

Luke Shaw signs for Man United

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Luke Shaw from Southampton on a four-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.

The England international left-back indicated that his reported 30 million-pound move from Southampton had been completed earlier on Friday by changing his Twitter biography to: "Professional footballer at Manchester United football club."

    article-2672111-1F302CEB00000578-407_634x584.jpg

The 18-year-old travelled up to Manchester on Thursday to have a medical and agreed personal terms with United after the two clubs were in talks about a fee.Shaw told Manchester United's official website: "I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.

"I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club."

He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player. I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfil that promise."

Shaw's arrival follows the 28.8 million-pound signing of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera on Thursday as United, after a slow start to their summer transfer business, have become heavy spenders. Both newcomers will rank among the five most expensive signings they have ever made, along with January recruit Juan Mata, Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand.

The completion of Shaw's transfer ends United's long search for a new left-back. Former manager David Moyes failed in attempts to sign Everton's Leighton Baines and Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao last summer.

Shaw was scouted by Moyes and, while new manager Van Gaal opted not to pursue some of the targets the Scot had identified, United continued to pursue the Southampton player.Patrice Evra, who has been the first-choice left-back since 2006, has signed a one-year contract extension but Alexander Buttner, who was his deputy, left this week to join Dinamo Moscow.

Shaw's fee will make him Southampton's club-record sale and the second member of England's World Cup squad to leave St Mary's this summer after striker Rickie Lambert joined Liverpool.

Meanwhile, speaking to Paddy Power before the transfer was completed, former United midfielder Paul Scholes claimed the size of the fee paid for Shaw was bad for English football. He said: "The proposed 34 million pound transfer for the 18-year-old Luke Shaw to Manchester United is another example of something which has a bad long-term impact.

"Clubs are priced out of this market which is why they go abroad for cheap options -- they're not better players. For a left-back to be worth 34 million pounds shows how silly the game has gone. For that money I want a centre-forward who's going to score 30 goals a season."Despite Scholes' remarks, United insist the transfer fee is less than 34 million pounds.
