'I'm thrilled and excited' - Shaw delighted by Manchester United move

    429529_heroa.jpg

Luke Shaw is delighted with his move to Manchester United and believes Old Trafford is the "ideal place" for him at this point in his career.

The 18-year-old left-back joins the club from Southampton in a £30 million deal and has signed a four-year contract - with the option for a fifth season - worth around £160,000 a week.

"I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me," Shaw told the Red Devils' official website.

"I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that.

"I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club."

Shaw becomes United's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

"Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential," said United assistant manager Ryan Giggs.

"He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player.

"I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfil that promise."

Moyes flies in for Galatasaray talks

    419354_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has flown into Istanbul to hold talks with officials at Galatasaray, Goal understands.

Moyes was pictured at Istanbul Ataturk Airport on Friday and is understood to be in Turkey to hold a meeting with the club’s board and visit their training facilities.

The former Manchester United boss, who has been without a club following his sacking at Old Trafford on April 22, is believed to have a number of job offers from clubs in Europe.

The Scot could now replace former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini in Istanbul after the Italian was sacked by the Turkish club earlier in June.

Moyes has made no secret of his desire to return to football management at the very top level.

"I got my first real taste of [the] Champions League this year and I thought I showed I can manage at that level," he told The Guardian earlier this month.

"I would like somewhere that would give me a chance of being in the Champions League or a club that has ambitions of being in the Champions League.

"It could be at home or abroad. I have always liked the thought of broadening my horizons and learning a bit more and at the moment I am quite comfortable watching and learning.

"I will go away and learn and look again to see what is happening."

Galatasaray will enter the Champions League at the group stage this season despite finishing second in the Turkish Super Lig due to Fenerbahce's ban from European football.

Liverpool agree €31m Lallana fee with Southampton

    418149_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have agreed a €31 million [£25m] fee with Southampton for Adam Lallana, Goal understands.

The 26-year-old is set to undergo a medical on Merseyside on Friday afternoon, with the move set to be completed next week.

As reported by Goal earlier this month, the winger is keen to join Brendan Rodgers' side in order to play Champions League football.

Liverpool’s initial €25m [£20m] bid for Lallana, which was made on the final weekend of the Premier League season, was rejected by Southampton.

Mauricio Pochettino was also keen on bringing Lallana to Tottenham but Spurs were reluctant to rival Liverpool’s pursuit of the player.

Lallana, who appeared in all three of England's World Cup group fixtures, will be Liverpool's third signing this summer following the arrival of Rickie Lambert from Southampton and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen.

Lallana's former club Bournemouth will be due €8m [£6.25m] once the transfer is completed, as they have a 25% sell-on clause in the star's contract.

King James can propel Colombia all the way

    428543_heroa.jpg

Jackson Martinez scored two, Faryd Mondragon bid farewell but neither could outshine the brilliance of James Rodriguez.

Colombia finished with nine points out of nine in Group C thanks to this 4-1 win over Japan but they were not as comfortable as the final scoreline would suggest. Shinji Okazaki nodded the Japanese level on the stroke of half-time after Juan Cuadrado's penalty.

Jose Pekerman had to do something. Having rested eight players he turned to a bench containing most of his first team and picked the No. 10. That decided the outcome. A thrilling half of football later and Martinez took the man of the match trophy and Mondragon departed in happy tears. Nothing would have been assured were it not for James Rodriguez.

"We saw all his qualities," says Fredy Guarin. "Now we know what he can do in complicated matches like today."

The Monaco man is coming of age in front of our eyes at these finals and there is a spectacular efficiency about how he plays the game. Like Mondragon he didn't start. The two changes represented the past, present and future of this brilliant Colombia team. James came on at half-time and his first touch brought electricity from thousands of Colombians present.

It didn't take him long to truly hit his stride. Good work from Santiago Arias carried the ball into the box where James lurked. He shoved the ball into the path of Jackson Martinez, taking three defenders out with a sideways stab of his left foot. Martinez made no mistake.

It was a similar story not long after. James picked up possession and carved Japan open with a brilliant through pass. Martinez sidestepped the goalkeeper and rolled the ball home. Colombia home and dry. Japan on their way home.

In the last minute Rodriguez demonstrated his burgeoning confidence in front of goal with a moment that was nothing less than stunning. He made Maya Yoshida look like he was playing a different sport, turning him this way and that inside the box, before lofting the best finish of these finals skilfully over the head of Eiji Kawashima.

He danced and drank in the adulation - totally at one with the expectations on him. There is joyfulness in his game. There is ruthlessness. There is efficiency. Colombia have a deep squad and many options up front but the form of their own King James will be key to progress.

"He's strong," says team-mate Juan Camilo Zuniga. "We all know the quality he has. But not just him. In the national team we have players all over the pitch who can make the difference."

Up next is a pretty ordinary looking Uruguay side who will surely be without a suspended Luis Suarez. The signs don't bode well for them. Rodriguez has the capability to stamp his special mark on every match he plays. Mondragon's night was one to warm the heart. James Rodriguez - that was one to stop it.

'Portugal wore Ronaldo like a diamond ring they never had'

    429530_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has been lambasted by Manuel Jose for treating his Portugal team-mates like "subordinates" following their group stage World Cup exit.

The Real Madrid forward was diagnosed with tendonitis of the knee ahead of the tournament and was far from his best as Paulo Bento's men finished third behind USA and Germany in Group G.

And the outspoken Jose, who has coached the likes of Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Primeira Liga, has now delivered a stinging critique of Ronaldo’s contribution in Brazil. He said: “He is a fantastic player but every time he speaks he comes out with a blunder.

“He ended up saying that he never believed in the team. If he does not believe in the team, then he doesn’t believe in his team-mates.“Portugal have been carrying the ‘world’s best’ like a diamond ring that we never had. The other players were treated like subordinates. Completely.”

Despite carrying an injury, Ronaldo still managed to score a goal against Ghana and provide a fine late assist for Silvestre Varela in the second group match against the United States.

'Suarez has been made a scapegoat' - Tabarez lashes out over ban

    429694_heroa.jpg

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has slammed Fifa for making Luis Suarez a "scapegoat" and has blamed the British media for creating the storm that led to an "excessive" four-month ban for the striker.

Suarez was banned from all football for four months, in addition to a nine-match ban for international matches, for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in Uruguay’s World Cup Group D victory over Italy in Natal on Tuesday.

Ahead of his side’s last 16 match against Colombia at the Maracana on Saturday, Tabarez delivered a lengthy and passionate statement in his pre-match press conference before leaving the room to loud applause from Uruguayan journalists.

“As a coach I think of the theory of the scapegoat,” Tabarez said. “Of giving a punishment as an example, so that everyone gets the message of what is good and bad, correct and not.

“We agree with the basis of it, but there is a danger in proceeding this way. Many times you forget the scapegoat is a person who has rights.

“Before and after the Suarez episode we have seen incidents measured with a completely different barometer.

“That does not mean I am not justifying anything, I believe he should be punished.

“I can’t deny that we were waiting for disciplinary action, but the decision was of an excessive severity. This was a transgression, not a crime.

“It was a decision which is obviously much more focused on the opinions of the media that attacked him immediately at the conclusion of the match and in the press conference afterwards.

“The journalists took only that topic for the press conference. I don’t know what their nationality was but they all spoke English.

“When I speak of media attacks, the topic they concentrated on was the background and history of Luis because of things that happened in the past.”

Suarez’s suspension is the third time he has been banned for biting an opponent during a match, having received a seven-game ban for biting Otman Bakkal while at Ajax in 2010 and a 10-match suspension for doing the same to Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013.

But Tabarez, who resigned from his position on the Fifa strategy committee in protest, backed Suarez with a message of support for the Liverpool striker.

He added: “Besides Luis Suarez’s mistakes, he has made significant contributions to football on the pitch. This is the true power of wonderful World Cups – the contribution of great football players.

“To Luis Suarez the person, the person who has always coexisted with us and we know him better than anyone else.

“The path you have covered is one he will go through again as someone who starts again to be better - but you will never be alone in that attempt.

“To the Uruguayan fans. We know you are moved by the punishment. We want you to know we are hurt but we have the desire to rebel. More than ever before, we will do our utmost for the match tomorrow.”

Swansea City sign Gomis on free transfer

    429682_heroa.jpg

Swansea City have signed striker Bafetimbi Gomis on a free transfer, the club have announced.

France international Gomis, who has previously been linked with a raft of Premier League sides, including Newcastle and Sunderland, has agreed a four-year deal with the Welsh outfit after leaving Lyon.

The 28-year-old scored 56 goals in 120 Ligue 1 starts for his former side and becomes Garry Monk's second signing ahead of the 2014-15 season following goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who joined from Arsenal.

Gomis has surpassed 20 league goals in each of his last two seasons, with his form leading to 12 international caps.

He missed out on a place in Didier Deschamps's World Cup squad and instead travelled to Wales to complete a medical on Friday.

Gomis will battle with 2013-14 top goalscorer Wilfried Bony for a place in the starting line-up, while Michu also remains at the Liberty Stadium despite reports of interest from around Europe.

Vidal 'nowhere near 100%' but will play against Brazil - Sampaoli

    429642_heroa.jpg

Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli has revealed that Arturo Vidal is "nowhere near" 100 per cent fit, but says the Juventus midfielder will start against Brazil on Saturday.

Vidal has been struggling with a knee problem, while defender Gary Medel is a big doubt for Chile's World Cup last-16 clash against the host nation at the Estadio Mineirao.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of that game in Belo Horizonte, Sampaoli said: "Arturo will play against Brazil. He is nowhere near 100 per cent fit, but he's a guarantee, an emblem.

"For Juventus in the Europa League [last season] he played at 30 or 35 per cent fit and he's the kind of player who can do that. He's doing everything he can to be involved. Against Spain he also made an enormous effort to be ready for the game."

The news on Medel was less positive, however, with Sampaoli set to make a last-minute decision on the 26-year-old's fitness.

"He has a muscle problem and we'll have to see how it develops," the Argentine coach said. "If the game were today, he wouldn't play. But luckily both he and Arturo are fast healers, so we have hope. We'll see how he is tomorrow."
