De Vrij has not signed for Manchester United, insists agent

    429955_heroa.jpg

The agent of Netherlands defender Stefan de Vrij has denied that his client has already agreed a deal to sign for Manchester United.

Goal understands the Red Devils are preparing a €15 million bid for the Feyenoord centre-back, who is thought to be keen to continue working with Louis van Gaal after excelling under his stewardship at international level.

But De Vrij's representative has played down rumours that his client has already put pen to paper on a contract at Old Trafford, and insists he is only concentrating on Oranje's World Cup campaign.

"We have no agreement with Manchester United, nor have we signed for them,” his agent told Lazionews24.com.

"I don’t know where this rumour came from. Stefan is concentrated only on the World Cup and he wants to continue doing well."

De Vrij, who scored his first international goal against Spain in his side's opening World Cup fixture, has also been rumoured to be interesting Lazio, but his agent would not be moved regarding the reports.

"Links to Lazio? No comment," he added.

Van Gaal has already begun adding to his squad with the signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, though on Saturday Goal revealed that a move for Arturo Vidal could be in doubt due to Juventus demanding €57m plus Nani for the Chile midfielder.

I am sure we will still be champions – Neymar

    432384_heroa.jpg

Neymar has told Brazilfans that the national team will still win the World Cup despite his injury-enforced absence.

The iconic star was stretchered off in the final moments of the Selecao’s 2-1 quarter-final win over Colombia on Friday night and has been diagnosed with a broken vertebrae, which will keep him out for four to six weeks.

But while the entire country comes to terms with his absence from the semi-final against Germany on Tuesday, the player has sent a teary-eyed video message in which he insists Brazil can still go on to win the World Cup."Brazilian people, players, staff, fans. This is a hard moment, and I don't have the words to define what's going through my head and my heart,” Neymar told the fans via CBF TV.“I just want to be back as fast as possible, when everyone least expects. I want to say thank you for the support, the love that everyone has shown for me, for all the messages.

He continued: “I'd like to tell you all that my dream is not over. It was interrupted, but it goes on. My dream is to be champion.“My dream was also to play in a World Cup final. But it won't happen this time. I'm sure that they [Brazil] will win and be champions. And I'll be there, with them.“And us, Brazilians, will all be celebrating this.”

Luis Felipe Scolari’s men face Germany in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday for a place in the final, with kick-off at 22:00CET.

Lloris drops hint over Tottenham exit

    399974_heroa.jpg

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has suggested he is considering his future amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco.

The France captain expects to stay at Spurs for the start of the new season but is a summer target for the big-spending Ligue 1 clubs, who have both approached the Londoners over a deal and can offer the star Champions League football.

Tottenham sources insist Lloris will not be sold this summer and the club hope to convince the 27-year-old to sign a new four-year contract, with three years remaining on his current deal.

But Lloris hinted that he will now think about his ‘situation’ and could reveal more about his future in the coming weeks after France lost their World Cup quarter-final against Germany at the Maracana on Friday.

“I don’t want to speak about my situation now. I think I will speak soon about that and we will deal with it,” Lloris said.

“I need a few days to recover and after that to relax, have a good rest and come back for next season.”

Asked whether he thinks he will start the season at Tottenham, Lloris replied: “Yes, I should be.”

French champions PSG have targeted Lloris to bolster their squad as they target winning the Champions League, while Monaco are looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper after confirming they will not sign Victor Valdes because of his knee injury.

Both clubs have qualified for the group stage of next season’s Champions League and can also offer Lloris a significant increase on his €88,000 [£70,000]-a-week salary thanks to their wealthy owners.

Lloris played 45 matches for Spurs last term in a disappointing campaign in which they finished sixth in the Premier League and were only able to qualify for the Europa League.

He joined Tottenham from Lyon in the summer of 2012 in a deal worth €15 million [£12m] and is a key part of the club’s plans under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Vertonghen: You always worry about Messi

    431055_heroa.jpg

Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted that the sheer presence of Lionel Messi for Argentina was enough for the European side to stay worried at all times during their 1-0 World Cup quarter-final loss at the Estadio Mane Garrincha on Saturday.

The Barcelona man was less influential than in previous games as he was not involved in an Argentina goal for the first time this tournament, but Belgium were well aware that they could not afford to allow Messi any space, even if Gonzalo Higuain eventually ended up being the one netting the winner.

"We all knew that Argentina are incredibly dangerous on the counter-attack. So each time you enjoy possession, you are always thinking 'Let’s hope it doesn’t end up with Messi or Di Maria if we lose the ball'," Vertonghen told Goal.

"I don’t know whether we showed them too much respect, but we should have been more confident out there.

"We didn’t play at our own level today. We fell behind 1-0 early on, which should not have been a major problem, but we never really managed to dictate the game after that."

Toby Alderweireld, meanwhile, felt that Belgium were unlucky to crash out against the Argentines, although he too acknowledged that the presence of Messi had made life difficult for them.

"I think we went 1-0 behind in a very unfortunate way, although it was a fine finish from Higuain. The ball bounced a bit luckily for them.

"Things were really difficult for us from there on. We were unable to play our own game. We had to try something, so played a bit more opportunistically towards the end. We started playing long balls, hoping that it would help us create something, but it never really happened.

"I think we could have done more here had we had a bit more luck. We could have hurt them more had we made the right decisions. But they have so much quality, with someone like Messi, so you know they can always hit you from out of nowhere."

    Wilmots unimpressed by 'ordinary' Argentina

    430099_heroa.jpg

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has labelled Argentina “an ordinary side” after they knocked the Europeans out of the World Cup on Saturday.

Gonzalo Higuain’s first-half strike proved the difference in their quarter-final clash in Brasilia with Belgium offering little going forward until the latter stages when they resorted to long-ball tactics to try to force an equaliser.

Even though he insisted he was “losing gracefully”, Wilmots also felt Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli was a factor in his team’s exit.

He said: “It’s hard to know how we lost. Firstly, we saw how experienced the Argentines are. They affected the rhythm of the game, breaking it up, taking 30 seconds to take a throw-in. And they were allowed to do it.“We weren’t impressed by Argentina, they’re an ordinary side. But we lost.”

Wilmots felt Rizzoli should have done more to control Lionel Messi, in particular, after claiming the Barcelona star had got away with numerous fouls.“He committed three or four fouls and the referee did nothing. Messi is a formidable player. He holds the ball well when they need that,” he said.

Wilmots did find time to praise his own side’s efforts, however, adding: “I’m proud of the lads. They put in a lot of effort and I can’t say anything bad about them. I want to thank the guys for how they fought. There were people crying in the dressing room.

“I think we made mistakes, but I always look to the team. We showed we’re a good side, but they didn’t let us have any space.”

Van Buyten: Germany would easily beat Argentina

    431718_heroa.jpg

Belgium defender Daniel van Buyten says Germany would easily beat Argentina, after his team was eliminated from the World Cup at the hands of the Albiceleste.

Gonzalo Higuain's first-half strike was enough to send his side through to the semi-finals for the first time since 1990, but Van Buyten was not impressed by the South Americans, despite their victory.

"This is bitter for Belgium," the 36-year-old told ZDF. "We lacked experience.

"This is a big tournament and experience is very helpful in these occasions.

"Of course Argentina have superb players, but I think a team like Germany would easily beat them."

Meanwhile, team captain Vincent Kompany was keen to take the positives from Belgium's World Cup campaign.

"We really gave it our best," he told Sporza. "It was a wonderful adventure for us.

"The most important thing is that we gave everything. Maybe in four years' time in Russia we will get another shot.

"We have the youngest squad of the tournament, we must not forget that. Maybe we will have more luck in Russia, and we will definitely have more experience then."

Sabella: Messi is water in the desert

    432361_heroa.jpg

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella says Lionel Messi is like "water in the desert" for the Albiceleste and believes every move made by the Barcelona forward is "a sign of hope" for his team.

For the first time in this tournament Messi ended a game without a goal or an assist as Argentina edged out Belgium 1-0, thanks to Gonzalo Higuain's strike, to seal a place in the World Cup semi-finals.

Nevertheless, Sabella was delighted with his captain.

"Messi played a wonderful match," he told reporters after the game. "It’s about having the ball, bringing together three opponents. Every move he makes is a sign of hope for us. What he does is always decisive, it's beyond scoring goals. He almost never loses the ball and he draws rivals together.

"He's water in the desert. He doesn’t just score. The other day he played the pass for Di Maria to score against Switzerland. Today, when the terrain was dry, he gave us that breath of fresh air."

Sabella also saw signs of improvement in his side's 1-0 win over Belgium in Brasilia.

"This was our best game, we were balanced and we played well," he said. "It is a great joy for the squad and I am happy for the people, my family and everyone that has supported me."

The only blemish on an otherwise happy afternoon for Sabella was the injury suffered by Angel Di Maria which saw the Real Madrid winger limp off after 33 minutes.

"Di Maria's injury could be costly for us. Angel has a problem with his thigh and we'll undergo tests tomorrow."

:(Agent - Di Maria is out of World Cup

    432353_heroa.jpg

Argentina star Angel Di Maria’s agent has claimed his client will miss the remainder of the World Cup after he sustained a thigh injury in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat of Belgium.

The Real Madrid winger lasted just 33 minutes of the quarter-final in Brasilia before limping out of the action.

His agent Eugenio Lopez, who works alongside Jorge Mendes, revealed to Goal Argentina that the 26-year-old had told him he had a torn thigh muscle, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament.Argentina are due to face the winner of the Netherlands/Costa Rica tie in Sao Paulo on Wednesday with the final due to take place in Rio next Sunday.

Further tests will be carried out tomorrow after which it is expected the news will be confirmed by team doctors. His absence would be a huge blow for a side already over-reliant on Lionel Messi.

Di Maria has played well in bursts in Brazil but has yet to replicate the form which helped Madrid to the Champions League crown in May.

One consolation for coach Alejandro Sabella is the fact that one of his other star forwards, Gonzalo Higuain, stepped up against the Belgians, grabbing the first-half winner with a clinical shot on the turn. After the game Sabella admitted he had his fingers crossed that Di Maria would be fit enough to play a part in the tournament going forward.

“Di Maria's injury could be costly for us. Angel has a problem with his thigh and will undergo tests tomorrow," he explained.

Van Gaal's goalkeeping masterstroke keeps Dutch dream alive

    432494_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal argued on the eve of Netherlands' World Cup quarter-final clash that it would not be the best team that triumphed in Brazil, but the strongest squad. "The best 23 players will be champions." Every man, he argued, has a role to play. On Saturday evening at Arena Fonte Nova, Tim Krul made one of the most dramatic cameo appearances we have ever seen on the game's grandest stage.

With less than 60 seconds of 120 scoreless minutes remaining, Van Gaal decided to change his goalkeeper, replacing Jasper Cillessen with Krul. It was a remarkable decision, as just moments before Cillessen had pulled off a fantastic save with his feet to deny Marcos Urena a winning goal.

However, it proved a masterstroke on Van Gaal's part, with Krul saving twice in the shootout. Not only that, he guessed right every single time. Costa Rica, remember, had scored all five of their spot-kicks in their shootout success over Greece. They had been fearless. Here, though, they looked stricken with nerves. In that sense, Van Gaal's decision to change his keeper had been a key psychological blow in what had been up until that point a tight tactical contest.

Just three weeks previously, every Netherlands touch was greeted with an 'Ole!' by locals revelling in a Dutch dismantling of defending champions Spain. Upon their return to Salvador, they were being booed inside the opening 10 minutes for having to temerity to build patiently from the back.

The crowd here have grown accustomed to goals, to excitement. Neither side offered any of either during the opening 45 minutes. Costa Rica, of course, were only too happy to sit back and soak up pressure but the neutrals were on the side of the tournament's surprise package, so it was hardly surprising that the crowd took their frustration out on the favourites.

Unlike their Group B opener against Spain, Netherlands had to take the game to their opponents. It did not appear to suit them, as it allowed them to use the pace of Arjen Robben on the break only intermittently.

Consequently, the predominantly Brazilian crowed grew bored by what they seeing - wave after wave of Dutch attack being excellently dealt with by an incredibly well-organised Costa Rican back-line - and became more preoccupied with voicing their support for their fallen hero, Neymar.

The Brazilian, of course, had suffered a World Cup-ending injury in his country's 2-1 win over Colombia the night before. At times, it seemed like Costa Rica were trying to boot Robben out of the tournament as well, the Ticos back-line taking it in turns to take out the Dutch winger. Michael Umana, Johnny Acosta and Giancarlo Gonzalez were all booked for fouls on Robben, while Junior Diaz was fortunate to escape a second yellow in the dying seconds of normal time.

By that point, Netherlands were wondering what they had to do to beat Keylor Navas in the Costa Rica goal. The goalkeeper made a succession of remarkable saves and even when he was beaten by Van Persie, Christian Bolanos and Yeltsin Tejeda somehow combined to send the ball up and onto the frame of the goal.

The woodwork came to Costa Rica's rescue on two further occasions with Sneijder striking the post with an in-swinging free-kick before rattling the bar in the dying minutes of extra-time.

In that sense, the Dutch deserved their good luck. Although, one could easily argue that in football, as in life, you make your own. And there was nothing fortuitous about the fact that Krul was on the field for this game's decisive moments.

Penalties are a lottery but Van Gaal stacked the odds in Netherlands' favour - and for that he deserves all the credit in the world.

Krul display shows we’re in it together – Robben

    432460_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben has hailed the togetherness of the Netherlandssquad after their dramatic penalty shoot-out win in the World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica.
Tim Krul replaced starting goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen in the dying moments of extra-time and went on to save two penalties as the Dutch won 4-3 after a 0-0 draw.

And while intra-squad troubles have been cited as a reason for struggles in the past, Robben believes the substitute’s impact and the scenes of celebration afterwards prove that Louis van Gaal’s squad are united for the cause.“[In the dressing room afterwards] it was a party. We were so good at the penalties too, compliments to Tim. It shows we do it all together,” Robben told NOS.

“We deserved to win. The only problem today was that we didn’t score. I'll probably get into cliches again, but this was a great team effort.”Robben had been in the spotlight going into the game following the controversial manner in which he won a late penalty against Mexico in the previous round.

But the Bayern Munich star insisted he pays no attention to what is said off the pitch.“A lot has been said about diving, but I get tired of it all,” he added. “I get kicked from all sides, but luckily I am still fit. I felt that I could make the difference, but didn't get the ball enough.

“I don't want to blow my own trumpet, but I was all up in this game. I felt I was good.”Team-mate Wesley Sneijder admitted that he started to wonder if it wasn’t going to be his side’s night.

“We played well, we had chances, but it felt like things weren't going our way. And in the end, that starts to tingle a bit,” he said. The Netherlands will face Argentina in Wednesday’s semi-final in Sao Paulo, with the winners going on to meet Brazil or Germany in next Sunday’s final.

Van Gaal: We told Krul about penalty ploy - but not Cillessen

    432523_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has revealed that he told Tim Krul before Netherlands' World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica that he would be called upon in the event of a penalty shootout - but not Jasper Cillessen.

The Dutch coach made the remarkable decision to substitute his first-choice goalkeeper with just seconds go to in extra-time at Arena Fonte Nova.

However, it proved a masterstroke, with Krul saving two of Costa Rica's five spot-kicks as Netherlands triumphed 4-3 on penalties to set up a semi-final showdown with Argentina.

"We thought this through beforehand," Van Gaal told reporters in Salvador. "Every player in my squad has certain skills and qualities. They don't always overlap but all thought that Tim would be the most appropriate keeper to stop penalties because he has a long reach.

"But we said nothing to Jasper because we didn't want to be faced with this information before the match because that would be disappointing for him.

"But every goalkeeper has his qualities and we felt that Tim had a longer reach and a better track record stopping penalties.

"So, we discussed all of this with Tim and we had him study Costa Rica's penalties [in their last-16 shootout success over Greece]. You will have seen that he dived in the right direction time and time again.

"So, all of us are a little bit proud that this play has helped us through."

Van Gaal also explained that it had been difficult for him to keep one substitution in reserve, given a number of his players were struggling with fatigue in extra-time.

"I had decided [to use Krul] before the 90 minutes had ended," he revealed. "I thought that we were playing well and had created lots of opportunities so I hadn't had have to make many subs, but there was a chance of penalties.

"I didn't feel Memphis [Depay] had played well so I brought in Jeremain [Lens] before the end of normal time. Of course, in extra-time I took into account that I shouldn't use all my subs so I could still use Tim.

"But we had some injuries and guys like Robin [van Persie] and Georginio [Wijnaldum] were exhausted. Bringing on Klaas was also a risk as we went to four defenders. So it was a risk, a bit tricky.

"Fortunately, it worked out. Because if it hadn't, I would have taken the wrong decision!"

Van Gaal also hailed his players for the way in which they had kept their composure, despite having hit the woodwork three times and been frustrated by Costa Rica's alleged time-wasting and persistent fouling.

"I believe that the players were more controlled than the technical staff," he joked. "My colleagues were jumping up and down all the time!

"But I felt that my players behaved marvelously - despite the delaying tactics; despite that the referee allowing all sorts of time-wasting to go unpunished. And I'm not even talking about his decision on all the fouls,

"So, hats off to my players. It was frustrating for us and there's a law in football that if you miss so many chances, the opponent beats you.

"But I saw the determination in my players to progress. They know exactly when they have to take responsibility and that's the key. It's not about me, or anyone else. It's about them.

"When I compare them to other teams I've coached, they are the strongest in terms of professionalism and taking on responsibility."

Netherlands next face Argentina in Sao Paulo. It was put to Van Gaal during his post-match press conference in Salvador that the Albiceleste will prove a more attack-minded adversary than Costa Rica - but the new Manchester United boss dismissed the notion that Lionel Messi and Co. always take the game to the opposition.

"I can't really give you my opinion of the second half as I only saw five minutes but I thought Belgium were the better side in the first half," Van Gaal said of the quarter-final clash in Brasilia earlier in the day.

"Argentina are obviously an excellent team, with great individuals, such as Messi. But if people say that Argentina attack all the time, well, that was not the case in my opinion in the first half."
