:)'Infectious' Van Gaal very similar to Ferguson, says Giggs

    437796_heroa.jpg

Ryan Giggs says that new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal shares a similar aura to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Dutchman took charge of the Red Devils for the first time on Thursday, overseeing a 7-0 pre-season friendly win over LA Galaxy.

Van Gaal has famously won titles with Ajax, Bayern Munich and Barcelona during his coaching career and Giggs is not surprised at his vast success.

"Yes, I do see similarities [with Ferguson]," the Welshman told reporters. "They both have an aura about them but that comes from the success they have had.

"They demand that the players respond and they demand respect. In the short space of time I have worked with Louis, you can see why he has been a success. He is infectious."

Giggs also revealed Van Gaal's meticulous planning and believes that the players are looking forward to making up for last season's disappointing campaign.

"He wants everything right from the first minute of training to the last," he added. "Everything we are working from is the blueprint he sent over from the World Cup, every minute of every session is laid down.

"Just everything he does is clear and everyone gets it straight away. He has a unique way of putting it over and it’s brilliant to see.

"It's quite simple but, if you make a mistake, he will tell you and, if you do something good, he will tell you. He makes no bones about who you are.

"I'm sure [the players] can't wait to get onto Old Trafford and produce the form they are all capable of."

Juventus: No plans to sell Vidal

    430454_heroa.jpg

Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta insists the club have no plans to sell Arturo Vidal and admits he would be surprised if the midfielder requested a transfer.

Goal understands Manchester United were lining up a €54 million offer for the 27-year-old after Louis van Gaal had approved the move.

When asked about his future on Thursday, Vidal ruled out a switch to Old Trafford but conceded that he could leave Juventus this summer, although Marotta believes the Chile international was misinterpreted.

"It’s very simple. Vidal extended his contract with us last season, as there was a mutual desire to continue this rapport," Marotta told reporters.

"There is no reason for him to leave. Yesterday he gave an interview in a rushed and embarrassed manner, as he was getting his luggage and so he was misinterpreted.

"I can confirm Vidal is happy to be with us and there’s no reason for alarm. He had problems with the knee injury and rushing the recovery for the World Cup, so it will take a while to find his fitness.

"Nobody can doubt the quality of the player, nor how strong his bond is with Juventus."

When asked whether he would be surprised if Vidal requested a transfer this summer, Marotta replied: "Absolutely yes. It is a very remote chance, considering what he is like, and so I’m not even considering the possibility.

"The situation around him is typical of the transfer market when several big clubs admire him. Vidal exploded in a fairly unexpected way over the last two years to become one of the best players in the world.

"He is naturally linked to big clubs, but I’ll point out Juventus are a big club, too. And we intend to hold on tight. I don’t get the feeling he wants to leave us."

    Official: Drogba completes Chelsea return

    437023_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have completed the signing of Didier Drogba on a one-year contract.

The 36-year-old returns to Stamford Bridge having left in 2012 after winning the Champions League.

Drogba, who featured for Cote d'Ivoire at the World Cup earlier this summer, has scored 157 goals in 341 appearances for Chelsea and has also won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups with the club.

"It was an easy decision,” the striker told the club’s official website.

"I couldn't turn down the opportunity to work with Jose again. Everyone knows the special relationship I have with this club and it has always felt like home to me.

"My desire to win is still the same and I look forward to the opportunity to help this team. I am excited for this next chapter of my career."

Drogba is reunited with Jose Mourinho after working with the Portuguese for three years before his departure in September 2007.

"He’s coming because he’s one of the best strikers in Europe," the former Real Madrid and Inter coach said.

"I know his personality very well and I know if he comes back he’s not protected by history or what he’s done for this club previously. He is coming with the mentality to make more history."

    Official: Bebe completes Benfica move

    434787_heroa.jpg

Manchester United flop Bebe has completed his move to Benfica in a deal worth up to €3 million [£2.3m], with United to receive 50% of any sell-on fee.

The 24-year-old joined Old Trafford in a €9.3m deal from Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2010, despite Sir Alex Ferguson admitting that he had never seen him play.

Bebe made just seven appearances for United in his debut season and was subsequently loaned out to Besiktas, although a cruciate ligament injury restricted him to featuring in only four games for the Turkish club.

The forward returned to United for their pre-season tour in 2012 but after failing to break into the first team he was sent out on loan to Rio Ave in January 2013.

Bebe was granted another loan move to Portugal at the start of last season and he finished with 11 league goals for Pacos de Ferreira.

Lallana to miss start of season after suffering knee injury

    430807_heroa.jpg

New Liverpool signing Adam Lallana will miss the start of the new Premier League season after suffering a knee injury in training.

The midfielder moved to Anfield for a €32 million fee after representing England at the World Cup but damaged his lateral collateral ligament on Friday.

Lallana is now expected to be sidelined for "up to six weeks", likely ruling him out of Liverpool's first game of the season against former side Southampton.

"Lallana has been assessed by Liverpool's medical staff and does not require surgery," a club statement read."

"No specific timeframe has been placed on a return to fitness, but injuries of this nature can result in a spell of anywhere up to six weeks on the sidelines.

"The England international will undergo further assessment by the club's medical team in the United States and on return to Liverpool."

    Espanyol: We nearly signed James

    438271_heroa.jpg

Espanyol have revealed how they came close to signing Real Madrid's latest big-money signing James Rodriguez back in 2010.

The Colombia star, 23, is the fourth most expensive player of all-time after joining the Champions League winners for €80 million from Monaco, but his career path could easily have been very different.

“In the summer of 2010 we were very advanced and the priority for us was signing James Rodriguez,” Espanyol's former sporting director Ramon Planes said.
“He was very, very close to Espanyol. Talks were in the final part. There was an economic agreement between the clubs, we talked several times and he was eager to come.
“The problem was in guaranteeing the payment and a few days later, he signed for Porto.”

James sealed his move to the Santiago Bernabeu following a rapid rise to prominence during Colombia's World Cup campaign.

The forward scored six goals to win the Golden Boot as the tournament's top goalscorer, with his goals helping his nation reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

They were beaten by host nation Brazil in the last-eight, but James did enough to catch the eye and seal a six-year deal at Madrid.

    Retirement was planned - Lahm

    436381_heroa.jpg

Philipp Lahm has revealed he planned his international retirement long before lifting the World Cup with Germany in Brazil.

The 30-year-old stunned the world of football by announcing his decision to quit the national side after the tournament, with Euro 2014 just two years away.

But the Bayern Munich man is convinced now is the right to walk away with Germany ready to bring through a new production line of talent.

He told Fifa.com: I slowly but surely came to the decision in the course of last season. I knew I would retire from international football after the World Cup.

"I’m happy and grateful that the end of my career in the national team coincides with winning the World Cup in Brazil. For me personally it’s simply the right time to stop.

"The team has boundless ability, the blend is good, and talented newcomers are waiting in the wings."

Lahm operated as both a defensive midfielder and a right-bck during the tournament but refuted the suggestion he was the perfect footballer, noting his weakness on his left-hand side.

"I can reveal that as a left-back I had difficulty defending well-struck crosses with my left foot," he said. "So I don’t play left-back any more. As for my weaknesses as a right back and holding midfielder, I’m definitely not going to reveal anything. It’s up to my opponents to find out."

The Bayern star also gave his thoughts on the progress German football has made in the 10 years leading up to their World Cup success, citing the relationship between the national side and Bundesliga clubs.

"We’ve definitely benefited from considerable investment in youth development in Germany over the last 10 to 15 years," he said.

"Every Bundesliga club operates an elite academy, training has become more intense and professional and we have full-time, fully qualified coaches.

"Every German footballing generation has produced good players, but we’ve also caught up tactically in recent years."

Official: Sunderland sign Van Aanholt from Chelsea

    408566_heroa.jpg

Sunderland have completed the signing of Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea on a four-year deal.

The 23-year-old becomes Gus Poyet's fourth summer signing, joining Billy Jones, Costel Pantilimon and Jordi Gomez at the Stadium of Light.

Van Aanholt made 70 league appearances for Vitesse in a two-year loan spell, scoring five goals, and helped the club to sixth place in the Eredivisie last season.

He made just four league appearances for Chelsea in his five years at Stamford Bridge, all as a substitute, and the defender will be looking to experience regular Premier League action at Sunderland.

"We would like to thank Patrick for his service and wish him the best of luck for the future," read a statement on Chelsea's official website.

Van Aanholt, who has two international caps, was called up to Louis van Gaal's provisional Netherlands squad of 30 prior to the World Cup but did not make the cut as the Oranje went on to claim third place in Brazil.

The left-sided defender also spent time at Sunderland's rivals Newcastle during a loan spell in 2010 - one of five clubs at which he has enjoyed a temporary stay.

    Garcia: Strootman not joining United

    438612_heroa.jpg

Roma head coach Rudi Garcia has insisted midfielder Kevin Strootman will not be joining Manchester United.

Strootman was in impressive form for Roma last season, until a serious knee injury curtailed his campaign in March - ending his chances of being included in Louis van Gaal's Netherlands squad for the World Cup.

With Van Gaal departing to take over at United at the conclusion of the Netherlands' campaign in Brazil, many Dutch stars have been linked with a move to Old Trafford as the Premier League giants look to rebuild after a disappointing season under David Moyes in 2013-14.

Among those has been Strootman, but with Roma and United due to clash in the International Champions Cup in the United States on Saturday, Garcia fended off questions about his player's future at a press conference."I have never discussed his departure and neither has he," he said.

"Strootman is a Roma player and he'll stay with us this season."Garcia also took the time to discuss Strootman's recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

"Kevin is following a personalised rehabilitation programme and I don't want him travelling unnecessarily, so it's best he remains in Boston to work with the physiotherapists," the Frenchman added.

"He should resume running soon, so he's in good shape."

Arsenal agree €20m deal for Southampton star Chambers

    308993_heroa.jpg

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Southampton starlet Calum Chambers.

The 19-year-old, who can play right-back, centre-back or as a midfielder, has long been regarded as one of the top young prospects in English football and the Gunners have now won the race for his signature, agreeing a deal that will eventually rise to €20 million.

Chambers is understood to have already had a medical, ahead of signing a deal at the Emirates which will see Southampton paid an initial €13m.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wanted to take the teenager to Anfield, but Chambers has instead opted for north London and the opportunity to link up with Arsene Wenger.

    438517.jpg

Chambers had four years left on his current deal but had his head turned once Arsenal made their move, with Southampton realising it would be difficult to shun the interest from one of the Premier League's top clubs.

New Saints boss Ronald Koeman was keen for Chambers to remain at St Mary's and challenge Nathaniel Clyne for the right-back spot, but the Dutchman has reluctantly accepted the deal is going to go through.

Chambers will be the latest Southampton star to depart the club this summer following the exits of Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert to Liverpool, while Luke Shaw has also left for Manchester United.

Dejan Lovren, meanwhile, is set for a move to Liverpool and, as exclusively revealed by Goal, Arsenal have redoubled their efforts to sign Morgan Schneiderlin, with Tottenham also keen on a deal.

Di Maria playing off Manchester United, PSG

    i

Angel Di Maria is getting so frustrated that a move to Paris Saint-Germain is taking so long that he has threatened to join Manchester United instead if things don't move along, according to French radio reports.

Real Madrid are after 57 million euros for the Argentine, but PSG's financial fair play penalties make that a little unrealistic for the French giants.

The Sun report the Red Devils have an opportunity to swoop in, but United also have concerns -- not with the transfer fee, but with Di Maria's wages. But there remains hope that the 26-year-old could lower his 6.5 million-pound demands as he looks kindly on United -- and not so kindly on PSG.
    A decision is imminent.
