Wenger promises 'very active' deadline day for Arsenal

    449678_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger did not rule out a move for Carlos Bacca after Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.

Goal understands the Gunners are poised to make a bid for the Sevilla striker, with Olivier Giroud ruled out for up to four months with an ankle injury.

Yaya Sanogo started up front as Arsenal were held by newly promoted Leicester and following the game, Wenger did not deny his interest in the Colombian.

When quizzed regarding a move for Bacca, Wenger replied: "I can give you my phone and in the next 24 hours you will see you get plenty of people offered from all over the world.

"We can talk and talk and talk. At the end of the day we sign somebody or not.

"Could we win the game today without anybody? Yes. We have plenty of strikers and even when we had Giroud - now everybody says we cannot replace Giroud - when you had Giroud you asked me the same question.

"It's a recurrence as long as the transfer market is open to make everybody dream by thinking the solution is always somewhere, when it's not necessarily obvious."

Wenger confirmed the club are open to signing new players ahead of the transfer deadline on Monday night.

"We are very active," he told reporters. "The solution every time you don't win a game is to sign somebody anyway.

"We are out there and we try our best and you have to trust us to find the best possible solution, but as well not to think every time you don't win a game that there is a miracle man who wins you a game.

"I don't want to promise what I am not sure of. I have worked long enough in England to know that I don't like to promise what 100 per cent doesn't depend on me."

Mazzarri blasts 'absurd' referee after Inter draw

    450954_heroa.jpg

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri has accused referee Daniele Doveri of making "absurd" decisions during his side's 0-0 draw away to Torino.

The visitors required a first-half penalty save from Samir Handanovic to keep them from falling to defeat in Turin, having not been beaten by their hosts since February 1994.

And Mazzarri is convinced that Doveri made the wrong call, leaping to the defence of his new centre-back Nemanja Vidic, who conceded the spot-kick and was sent off in the closing minutes for dissent in a forgettable Serie A debut.

He told Sky Sport Italia: "If you give the first penalty, then you have to give the one on [Inter's Mauro] Icardi too, which was more obviously a foul.

"In fact, the one on [Torino forward Fabio] Quagliarella was absolutely not a penalty, otherwise they'll give dozens every game.

"As for the Vidic red card, the referee lost the plot. Vidic is used to playing in England, where if a fair foul is given, they applaud the referee and say 'you got it right'.

"Here Doveri misunderstood the intention and thought it was malicious. It's absurd."

Mazzarri insisted there were plenty of positives to take from the game, hinting that Torino could be surprise packets in Serie A once again after finishing just three points behind Inter last season.

"It was a balanced and difficult game, which we knew it was going to be, as it's never easy to play in Turin where they sit back and wait for you," he said

"We tried to win right to the end, but didn't take our chances. Overall we played well and it'll be tough for everyone here."

The former Napoli boss was particularly impressed by the performance of debutant Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, who put in a lively performance after coming off the bench in the second half.

Mazzarri said: "I had wanted to start Osvaldo, but he wasn't in good shape and I asked if he could play 30 minutes. We really could've done with [Rodrigo] Palacio today, too."

AC Milan enjoyed a perfect hour against Lazio, says Inzaghi

    450881_heroa.jpg

Filippo Inzaghi was thrilled with the battling qualities displayed by his AC Milan side as they beat Lazio 3-1 in Serie A on Sunday.

In his first competitive game in charge of the club, Inzaghi watched on at San Siro as the hosts took an early lead through Keisuke Honda.

Goals from Sulley Muntari and Jeremy Menez put Milan in complete control in the second half, before Alex's own goal left nerves jangling slightly in the final quarter of the game, and an even more anxious finish was avoided when debutant goalkeeper Diego Lopez saved Antonio Candreva's penalty in stoppage time.

Inzaghi, who sprinted down the touchline to celebrate with his players after Muntari's strike, believes his side will fight for everything this season.

"These 50 days of training helped us to form a great group," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"I had said we could lose against more talented opponents, but not because they wanted it more than we did.

"It was a perfect game for the first hour, then we suffered a little, but that was only normal in the circumstances. The president [Silvio Berlusconi] was happy with the performance."

It was announced ahead of the game that Milan had completed a two-year loan deal for Chelsea's Fernando Torres, and the Spaniard was in the stands to watch his new side start the new campaign with a victory.

"He will give us a big hand and the opportunity to make the most of counterattacks," Inzaghi said.

"He had his medical tests today and set a new record for the team.

"What are our objectives? There are perhaps three teams who have something more, but with hunger, temperament and our fans back at San Siro, we could be a surprise."

    Roma sign Jose Holebas

    450651_heroa.jpg

Roma raided Olympiakos for the second time in the space of a week, this time securing the services of Greek left-back Jose Holebas.

After signing centre-back Kostas Manolas earlier in the week, Roma confirmed the capture of Greece international team-mate Holebas - capped 26 times at international level - for a €1 million fee following Saturday's opening Serie A win over Fiorentina.

Holebas has penned a three-year deal with last season's Serie A runners-up after playing an integral role in Greece's run to the last-16 at the World Cup in Brazil.

The 30-year-old's move to Roma ends his trophy-laden four-year spell with the Greek giants, having arrived from German outfit 1860 Munich in 2010.
He won the Greek Superleague title in all four seasons at the Karaiskakis Stadium, while he also lifted back-to-back Greek Cup trophies.

Holebas is expected to be the final piece of business from coach Rudi Garcia in the transfer market following the arrivals of Juan Iturbe, Ashley Cole, Urby Emanuelson, Salih Ucan, Leandro Paredes, Alan Arario, Seydou Keita, Davide Astori and Manolas.

Injured Koscielny withdraws from France squad

    451174_heroa.jpg

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has been forced to withdraw from the France squad with a head injury. The 28-year-old was involved in a clash of heads with Jeffrey Schlupp early on in Arsenal's 1-1 Premier League draw at Leicester City on Sunday.Koscielny came off the worse of the two and had to be replaced by Calum Chambers in the 26th minute.

The French Foootball Federation have now confirmed the injury has ended his involvement in the country's forthcoming friendlies against Spain and Serbia.
Koscielny will be replaced in the French squad by Barcelona new boy Jeremy Mathieu.

Mathieu, who moved to Camp Nou from Valencia during the close-season, has made just two international appearances.

Crystal Palace to win McArthur race

    451181_heroa.jpg

Crystal Palace are set to beat Leicester City and Burnley to the signing of midfielder James McArthur, Goal understands.

Leicester agreed a €9 million fee with Wigan to sign the midfielder, who has been with the DW Stadium side since 2010, but Palace were given permission to speak to McArthur over the weekend and are now the favourites to sign the 26-year-old.

Burnley also made a move for the Scot earlier in August, but were told by Wigan that the player was not for sale.

Palace are looking to make a number of signings following the arrival of Neil Warnock, who replaced Tony Pulis amid reports of a disagreement over transfer policy with chairman Steve Parish.

Wilfried Zaha has returned to Selhurst Park on a season-long from Manchester United having failed to break into Louis van Gaal's first-team plans.

And Tottenham defender Zeki Fryers has also been pictured at the Palace training ground ahead of a move away from Spurs.

The south London club have also tied down winger Yannick Bolasie to a new contract.

Real Madrid failed their fans, says Pepe

    448906_heroa.jpg

Pepe has voiced his frustration with Real Madrid's 4-2 La Liga defeat against Real Sociedad on Sunday and feels Carlo Ancelotti's men owe their fans an apology following their disappointing performance.

Goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale saw Madrid grab a two-goal lead early on, but Sociedad eventually proved to be too strong as Madrid lost control, with Inigo Martinez, Zurutuza (twice) and Carlos Vela finding the net for the Basque side.

"We have to apologise to the fans, it is a difficult day for us. The whole team is to blame. We're sorry to the fans, this is hard for us to take, it hurts," Pepe was quoted as saying on the official Madrid website.

"We began the game well, but at 2-0 up we let the intensity drop. They came at us and we didn't keep our heads, or sacrifice ourselves enough, to get through it.

"We just can't let a 2-0 lead slip like that. We all have to roll up our sleeves and fight. We knew this was a difficult place to come, we knew they'd keep going until the end, and they got their reward.

"A lot of people will have found it hard to sleep because of us and that's not right. The club's motto is to fight to the very end, and tonight we failed the shirt."

Real Madrid resume La Liga action at home against Atletico Madrid on September 13.

QPR and West Ham lead race for Defoe

    400417_heroa.jpg

QPR and West Ham are leading the race to sign Jermain Defoe, Goal understands.

Harry Redknapp is keen to be reunited with the striker, whom he managed at Tottenham, Portsmouth and West Ham.

But a return to Upton Park, where Defoe emerged from the youth system and made his name, is also on the cards.

Newcastle and Sunderland are also understood to be interested in a move for the former Spurs man, who moved to MLS club Toronto at the end of February 2014.

Toronto general manager Tim Bezbatchenko confirmed the club have received offers for the striker on Sunday.

"As far as I'm concerned, Jermain Defoe is with TFC," Bezbatchenko said. "It's important for Jermain to be here, because he is a great player. But if things change then we'll adjust.

"We receive offers all the time, especially for a player like Jermain.

"We have received an offer and we have discussed it internally. I think that when you score as many goals as he has and you have the reputation and background that he has it's not uncommon to receive these offers.

"We've received, actually, multiple offers before over the course of this year. So I want to confirm that we're in talks, but we have a relationship with Jermain too. We're speaking with him and no decisions have been made.

"We'll discuss it over the next 24 hours."

Bayern needed Alonso more than Kroos, says Schuster

    450479_heroa.jpg

Former Germany international Bernd Schuster believes Bayern Munich needed Xabi Alonso more than they needed Toni Kroos as the latter is a more attack-minded player.

The Bundesliga champions offloaded Kroos to Real Madrid earlier this summer, before bringing in Alonso from the Santiago Bernabeu side last week.

Schuster feels it's impossible to say who of the two is the better player, but he has stressed that Alonso is the man Bayern needed most at the moment.

"You can't say whether Alonso is better than Kroos. Toni is a more attack-minded player. They could have played together quite well," Schuster told Bams.

"You always have to look at what a club actually needs. And Bayern needed Alonso more than they needed Kroos.

"We will see come the end of the season which team benefited from this transfer the most."

Schuster then went on to compare Alonso to Bayern coach Pep Guardiola during his active career.

"Pep Guardiola brought in his twin with Xabi Alonso. Pep used to play in the same position and had the same playing style.

"Both are strategists in front of their defence and aim to retain possession. They are organisers on the pitch and have a certain responsibility. They are a coach's right-hand man on the pitch."

Man Utd send Powell to Leicester on loan

    411953_heroa.jpg

Leicester City are set to win the battle to sign Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell on loan on transfer deadline day, Goal understands.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan in the Championship at Wigan, but United are keen for the former Crewe man to gain some experience in the Premier League.

Sunderland and Hull City were also keen on signing Powell, but he is now set for Leicester.

Powell was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson and moved to Old Trafford from Crewe in 2012, making a handful of appearances during his debut season.

He scored 12 goals in all competitions for Wigan last season and started United's shock 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat to MK Dons.

Goal understands Powell will be one of two attackers arriving at the King Power Stadium on deadline day, with Ipswich forward David McGoldrick set to complete an €10 million deal.
