The Witcher 3 delayed because the ‘market is afraid of badly polished next-gen games’

CD Projekt RED delayed the release of its highly-anticipated The Witcher: Wild Hunt due to the myriad of unpolished next-gen games hitting the market.

Speaking to financial journalists in Poland, CDP president and board member Adam Kiciński elaborated on the game’s delay announcement from earlier in the week, reiterating the game needed more polish and to release it in its current state would be unacceptable.

“There’s a lot of small errors because the game is huge,” he said. “It’s the only reason behind the delay. We didn’t assume it will be this big. Only after putting all the pieces together it turned out it’s bigger than the two first put together.“Let me remind you: it’s open and not linear. We are just learning how to play it and we have to catch the little pieces. We know what to do, we just have to do it.

We don’t want to release the game with bugs that undermine the gameplay.”Kiciński also reiterated that the original release date and the change to February 2014 were both announced “too early” and that the company is “paying for it now.”

“Gamers took our decision very well, he said, “[The] market is afraid of badly polished games on next-gen platforms. We want to put our names under this game [so]it has to be fun.”The Witcher 3 will now be released on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in May 2015.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Microsoft deal “does have a duration”, Square Enix reiterates

    2gvjvut.jpg

Rise of the Tomb Raider won’t be an Xbox exclusive forever, of course. When Rise of the Tomb Raider was first announced as an Xbox exclusive, it was only a short time before Square Enix and Microsoft clarified that the deal was likely to for a limited time only.

We had hoped that time would be quite short, but when Microsoft put its hand up to say it was in fact publishing the game recently, lots of gamers got the wind up.

Square Enix has now reiterated the fact that the deal won’t last forever.“Our partnership with Microsoft on Rise of the Tomb Raider does have a duration, but we aren’t discussing those details at this time and are focused on collaborating to deliver a great game on Xbox One and Xbox 360,” a representative told GameInformer.

It’s usual in cases like these for both companies to refuse to talk about the details of the exclusivity arrangement, because from the platform holder’s perspective it does them no good to have ponied up if everyone knows for sure there’s another version coming.

Still, it’s frustrating to have such confused messaging wafting about. We’re now back exactly where we were in August, when Xbox also admitted the deal has “a duration”. Nothing has changed.
