Manchester United U21s beat Liverpool 2-1 as Victor Valdes makes first appearance for the club

    football-man-united-mcnair_3256705.jpg

United took the lead on Monday night through midfielder Nick Powell in the 34th minute but Liverpool hit back just before the break as Valdes was beaten by Jerome Sinclair to level the scores. However, Paddy McNair’s second-half strike was enough to hand the home side victory over their rivals from Merseyside.

There was plenty of speculation throughout the day that Darren Fletcher could be set to make his final appearance for United but there was no place in the squad for the Scotland midfielder as he continues to be linked with a move to West Ham.

Despite the 30-year-old’s absence, Warren Joyce named a strong United line-up, including Valdes, Anderson and Powell. It was the midfield duo who combined to produce the first opening of the game as Powell raced onto Anderson's through ball, but the 20-year-old’s attempt flew juast wide of the post..

However, the former Leicester City midfielder was not to make the same mistake twice as he rose highest to head his side into the lead from Andreas Pereira's free-kick.Liverpool responded just before the half-time interval as Cameron Brannagan pounced on Reece James' loose pass and found Sinclair in space before the striker beat Valdes easily at the near post.

The home side made a fast start to the second half as McNair roared forward, linking with Saidy Janko before the Swiss youngster flicked the ball back into the path of the defender, who powered home a strike with his right foot within two minutes of the restart.

Liverpool enjoyed plenty of possession as the game wore on but it was United who went closest to grabbing another goal through Pereira, Jesse Lingard and Anderson as they went on to secure victory.

Magath urges Wolfsburg to sign Schurrle

    825972_heroa.jpg

Felix Magath has urged his former side Wolfsburg to sign Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle.

The 24-year-old has struggled for first-team appearances at Stamford Bridge since his move from Bayer Leverkusen, with just five Premier League starts to his name this season, and rumours of a possible January exit have surfaced.

Wolfsburg bought Kevin De Bruyne from Chelsea for €21 million a year ago, with the winger impressing upon his return to Germany after similar struggles to make an impact in the England's top flight.

Jose Mourinho failed to rule out the possibility of Schurrle leaving the club during January, with Chelsea chasing Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Douglas Costa, and Magath is confident Wolfsburg can surprise their rivals with a swoop for Schurrle.

"With a transfer as huge as a Schurrle you could send out a signal to the competitors," he told Goal.

"The rumours are circulating for a while now and the timing now is just right. I am confident they can become a serious rival for Bayern in the long-term.

"With Kevin De Bruyne they already have an exceptional player from Chelsea. If Schurrle really joined, the squad's quality would rise again and they would increase their chances on a sporting level."

FA Cup Fith Round Draw: Giant-killers Bradford handed Sunderland or Fulham showdown in fifth round

    bradford-city-chelsea-fa-cup_3255830.jpg

The League One side battled back from two goals down to secure a famous 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge and Monday’s draw handed them home advantage against the winner of the fourth-round replay.Bradford's co-chairman Mark Lawn believes that neither Sunderland nor Fulham will fancy the trip to West Yorkshire.

"We're at home. I think we can win at home," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "They won't want to come down here and get this lot (the fans) bouncing - and they can get this stadium bouncing. I don't think Sunderland or Fulham will want to come to Valley Parade."

If Manchester United can get past Cambridge in their replay, they will travel to the winners of Preston and Sheffield United, while holders Arsenal host Middlesbrough - the Sky Bet Championship high-fliers who won at Manchester City on Saturday.

Liverpool and Bolton will replay for the right to go to Crystal Palace, while Leicester and Aston Villa meet in a Midlands derby. West Brom face West Ham at home, while Stoke will travel to Blackburn after defeating Rochdale 4-1 in Monday's tie.

Derby play host to Reading in an all-Championship affair to round off the draw, but it is the enduring appeal of Bradford that is likely to hold the headlines.League Cup finalists two years ago, they are making further waves this year and their stunning win at Chelsea will be spoken of for years to come.

The last time they faced Sunderland saw them lose 3-0 in December 2003, while they have to go all the way back to 1994 to find their last meeting with Fulham, a goalless draw.

Draw for FA Cup Fifth Round

    Crystal Palace v Liverpool/Bolton
    Arsenal v Middlesbrough
    Aston Villa v Leicester
    West Brom v West Ham
    Bradford v Sunderland/Fulham
    Blackburn v Stoke
    Derby v Reading
    Preston/Sheffield Utd v Cambridge Utd/Man Utd

'Bayern have no Plan B if Guardiola quits'

    847832_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has admitted the club have no Plan B if coach Pep Guardiola decides to quit the club at the end of the season.

Just 18 months remain on the three-year deal the former Barcelona boss signed upon joining the club in the summer of 2013.

Reports in the English press on Monday claimed the 44-year-old could even depart the Allianz Arena in the summer and Rummenigge said Bayern would be caught cold if he opted to do so.

Asked by Kicker whether the Bavarians had a Plan B, he said: "There is only a Plan A, and that means Guardiola.
"If he and his family feel at home, he remains. If not, we would have to deal with it in a relaxed way."

Guardiola himself stated over the weekend that he will wait until the summer to open talks over a new contract, adding: "We still have time to talk about that after the end of the season.

"It has been a big challenge for me. I have had a great time and it was a dream come true to be Bayern coach."

The Spaniard won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup in his first season in charge, adding to the 14 trophies he won in four years at Barcelona.

:growl::(:(:(Manchester United have ruled out stop-gap January signings

Manchester United have made the decision to only pursue prime targets in this transfer window, sources have told ESPN FC, leaving open the distinct possibility that they will not do any more business in January.

United had already accepted they would have to wait until the summer to try to sign Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman given Roma's unwillingness to sell this month, while the player has also suffered a new knee injury. The club had therefore switched focus to the purchase of a centre-back and right-back, but they appear to be facing similar frustration on the defensive front.

ESPN FC has been told that, despite the increasing pressure to qualify for next season's Champions League, the hierarchy at Old Trafford have informed manager Louis van Gaal that, if they cannot get the club's main targets immediately, they now intend to wait until the summer rather than going for stop-gaps.Previously, all indications were that United may be willing to go for short- or medium-term solutions, particularly in central defence, with potential signings like Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar, but that has changed in the last week.

It is unclear whether the decision was financial or down to the risk of investing in specific individuals, but the consequence is United are only likely to move if they can force transfers for top targets.

Club sources state that they initially drew up a list of 12 potential signings for this window, with those players divided into "top priority" and "secondary priority." The top targets are by now well known, and include the likes of Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels -- who has played down talk of a move -- and Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne.

While Clyne may yet be possible given he is already expected to leave St Mary's in the summer, the purchase of Hummels or any other centre-back of his standing now appears unlikely.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (aet, agg 2-1): Ivanovic sends Blues to Wembley

    869402_heroa.jpg

Branislav Ivanovic's thumping extra-time header sealed Chelsea's spot in the League Cup final after an incident-packed 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Neither side could be separated after 90 pulsating minutes in the semi-final second leg before Ivanovic leapt highest to meet Willian's free-kick in the 94th minute to wrap up a 2-1 aggregate win and a trip to Wembley in March.

However, the match was noteworthy for a series of flashpoints involving Diego Costa, including a stamping incident in each half on Emre Can and Martin Skrtel.
The Spain international was at the heart of more contention when he was denied a penalty by referee Michael Oliver after going to ground under a challenge from Skrtel just after the 20 minute mark.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also made two brilliant one-on-one saves from Alberto Moreno and Philippe Coutinho in the first half that ultimately proved crucial.

Victory over Liverpool represents an ideal response for Chelsea after Saturday's 4-2 FA Cup defeat to League One side Bradford City that left manager Jose Mourinho fuming.

The Portuguese - who was involved in a touchline exchange with Brendan Rodgers - now has his sights set on a third League Cup title, the first of which came against Liverpool in 2005 and was his first trophy in English football during his first stint at the club.Chelsea had shouts for a penalty waved away in an end-to-end opening when Willian's low shot struck the arm of the sliding Lucas Leiva.

Can and Costa were then involved a brief altercation after the latter was lucky to escape punishment for seemingly stamping on the Liverpool midfielder's shin.Costa was in the spotlight again in the 22nd minute as he went to ground when Skrtel looked to have stood on his foot, but referee Oliver was uninterested. At the other end, Steven Gerrard's superb pass picked out the run of Moreno on the left of the area, with the full-back's subsequent shot well parried by Courtois, before the Belgium international saved Coutinho's drive with his foot after the Brazilian waltzed through the Chelsea defence.

The home side were dealt a blow when Cesc Fabregas had to be replaced following an accidental collision with team-mate John Terry shortly after the restart.
Tempers then threatened to boil over when Costa appeared to tread on Skrtel, leading to an angry coming together between the two players.

Eden Hazard, scorer of Chelsea's goal in the first leg, gave a timely reminder of his brilliance with a mazy run that led to him fizzing a shot just wide from 20 yards, before Simon Mignolet made a terrific block with his feet to keep out Costa's deflected half-volley.

Liverpool were then fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute when Jordan Henderson avoided a second yellow card for a deliberate hand ball, before Chelsea's Filipe Luis hobbled off after taking a knock. The breakthrough finally came four minutes into extra time, as Willian's teasing free-kick was headed home emphatically by Ivanovic.

Henderson could have forced penalties when he put a free header wide from 10 yards, but ultimately Chelsea safely saw out extra time to reach their first final since Mourinho's return in June 2013.

AC Milan 0-1 Lazio: Biglia sends 10-man visitors into last four

    869072_heroa.jpg

Filippo Inzaghi's future is set to come under yet more scrutiny after his AC Milan side exited the Coppa Italia courtesy of a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Lazio.Reports prior to the game suggested Inzaghi would be replaced as head coach if Milan, winless in five Serie A matches, failed to claim victory at San Siro on Tuesday.

And Lazio were able to pile on the pressure as Lucas Biglia's 38th-minute penalty proved decisive, despite Lorik Cana's dismissal at the end of the first half.Biglia broke the deadlock from 12 yards, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way after his cross had been handled by Michelangelo Albertazzi.

Cana then picked up two yellow cards in the space of five minutes to offer Milan a lift, but Inzaghi's men were unable to find an equaliser, with Giampaolo Pazzini and Alessio Cerci seeing goals disallowed in the second period.Cerci's strike was ruled out in stoppage time, with subsequent replays suggesting the Italy striker was offside by the narrowest of margins.

Milan were without Philippe Mexes, banned for four matches on Tuesday following his dismissal for grabbing Stefano Mauri by the throat in Saturday's league meeting between the sides, and Stephan El Shaarawy, who sustained a broken metatarsal in the same game.

Inzaghi made six changes in all, while Lazio's team showed five alterations, with Filip Djordjevic among those to drop out after fracturing his right ankle at the weekend.

Miroslav Klose spurned an excellent opportunity to put Lazio ahead in the ninth minute, shooting wide of the near post after intercepting a dreadful backpass from Ignazio Abate and taking the ball around Christian Abbiati.

With the visitors on top, it took a timely interception from Riccardo Montolivo to deny Marco Parolo a tap-in after Abdoulay Konko had headed across goal.
Milan eventually carved out a clear-cut chance after 33 minutes, Etrit Berisha reacting well to parry away a volley on the turn from Alessio Cerci.

Yet it was Lazio who moved ahead five minutes later. Albertazzi controlled a Biglia free-kick from the left using his arm and the latter sent Abbiati the wrong way with the resultant penalty.

Milan received a boost in the final minute of the first half, when Cana picked up his second yellow card in quick succession for a needless challenge from behind on Jeremy Menez.

Keisuke Honda, back from Asian Cup duty with Japan, was called upon to replace Sulley Muntari for Milan early in the second half, while Dusan Basta entered the fray after Mauricio - on his first start for Lazio - had been clattered by his own goalkeeper when defending a free-kick.Another substitute, Diego Novaretti, made a vital intervention to cut out Abate's ball across the six-yard box before Pazzini was denied a leveller.

The forward found the top-left corner with a wonderful half-volley in the 68th minute, but was penalised due to the ball rolling down his left arm as he brought it under control.

Lazio - who will face either Inter or Napoli in the semi-finals - came close to a second goal with 12 minutes remaining, Keita Balde Diao striking the inside of Abbiati's left-hand post.

Milan were almost handed a lifeline when Cerci struck in injury time, but a marginal offside decision went in favour of Lazio to leave Inzaghi fighting to retain a role he only took on in the close-season.
