Arsenal 0-1 Swansea City: Late Gomis header stuns Gunners

    1370542_heroa.jpg

Lukasz Fabianski came back to haunt Arsenal as Bafetimbi Gomis returned from injury to grab a dramatic late winner for Swansea City in Monday's 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

After a forgettable first half, Arsenal pummelled the Swansea goal after the break, but Polish goalkeeper Fabianski - who joined Swansea in the close-season after a seven-year spell in north London - made a string of superb stops to deny the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Nacho Monreal and Theo Walcott.

And Fabianski's contribution proved priceless as Gomis, who came on as a second-half substitute following a month-long lay-off with an ankle injury, headed home an 85th-minute winner, with goalline technology showing the ball clearly went in despite David Ospina's best efforts.

It was the second time Gomis has scored against Arsenal this term after he bagged in Swansea's 2-1 home win in November, and Garry Monk's side maintained their challenge for a sixth-placed finish that will offer Europa League football should Arsene Wenger's team beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup final.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have surrendered the advantage in the race for second to Manchester City with just two games remaining.

Wenger named the same starting XI for the fifth straight match, and the hosts had the first sight of goal when Olivier Giroud nodded Aaron Ramsey's cross over the bar.

Both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances, though, as Swansea's Jonjo Shelvey attempted an ambitious long-range half-volley - more out of hope more than expectation - that sailed well over.

Arsenal had tentative penalty claims waved by away referee Kevin Friend in the 27th minute when Alexis Sanchez claimed he was tugged to ground by Neil Taylor from a Santi Cazorla free-kick.

Arsenal continued to dominate possession as the half wore on, but aside from a 25-yard effort that Giroud curled wide, they failed to trouble Fabianski.

There was more intent about Arsenal's game after the restart and Federico Fernandez made a superb sliding block from Hector Bellerin's low centre from the right to deny Giroud a chance at goal.

Soon after, Giroud's clever flick was pounced upon by Sanchez who showed great strength to hold off Fernandez before shooting into the side-netting.

Arsenal continued to surge forward and Ramsey rifled into the side-netting, before Cazorla dug out a shot from the edge of the penalty area that Fabianski saved well low to his right.

Swansea were under siege, but Arsenal substitute Theo Walcott could only prod Bellerin's centre straight at Fabianski.

Fabianski was in unbeatable form, with Wenger left scratching his head when the Pole denied Monreal one-on-one before making a fine double save from Sanchez and Walcott in the 78th minute.

And Arsenal's profligacy was punished five minutes from time, as Taylor chipped in a cross from the left and Gomis leapt highest to head home, with Ospina's attempted save not enough to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Barcelona are more than just Messi - Rafinha

    rafinha-douglas-costa_1h9hv37qggld81sgnd2pgceoc5.png

Bayern Munich defender Rafinha has warned his team-mates not to become preoccupied with the thought of stopping Lionel Messi on Tuesday. The Argentine scored twice in a devastating final 13 minutes in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final as Barca raced into a 3-0 first-leg lead.

Rafina, however, says it would be dangerous to forget about the strength across the Blaugrana team sheet when they attempt to overturn the deficit at the Allianz Arena this week.

"Everyone knows how good Messi is. Of course we wanted to stop him, a player like him can decide games on his own," the 29-year-old told a press conference. "But Barcelona are not just Messi. They have a great team, just think about Luis Suarez.

"For 77 minutes last week we played very well, defended very well. After that we made some mistakes and we paid for that. Now we are going to try to score three or four goals – perhaps we will even have to take it to extra-time."Against players like this you take a risk by playing with just three at the back, but we will do what the coach says. It's the details which will decide games like these."

Rafinha is adamant Bayern can consider their season a success regardless of the result on Tuesday but feels their stunning comeback against Porto should give them hope of keeping their European dreams alive.

"If we are German champions, that means this has been a great season for us. We are still in semi-finals of the Champions League. We had had bad luck with injuries, and of course we wanted to go to the DFB-Pokal final, too.

"We did not expect to be 3-0 down at this stage, but we have another game, and when we are at out stadium we will have shown that we can score a lot of goals."

Wenger frustrated at Arsenal's finishing after Swansea City loss

    1370202_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger felt Arsenal were punished for a lack of composure in front of goal during Monday's 1-0 defeat to Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium.

The hosts wasted several second-half opportunities as they were punished by a mixture of wasteful finishing and a top-drawer performance from Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who was playing at the Emirates for the first time since leaving Arsenal for south Wales in the close-season.

Bafetimbi Gomis subsequently headed home an 85th-minute winner to help Swansea complete a smash-and-grab victory.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wenger said: "It's frustrating to lose, but there was a lot of positives. You play these games 20 times and you win 19, and the once when you lose was tonight.

"It was a question of maybe finishing better, being more patient and not making a mistake at the back.

"We did well, I cannot fault any individual player offensively. Maybe in the finishing we weren't calm enough, we wanted to rush and we needed more technique.

"You have to learn from defeat and take encouragement from a defeat like that."

Defeat leaves Arsenal three points adrift of second-placed Manchester City and, although the London club have a game in hand, Manuel Pellegrini's men have a superior goal difference.

Wenger now prepares his side for a visit to old rivals Manchester United on Sunday in what is a vital game for their hopes of claiming a runners-up spot this term.

"We have to prepare for our next game," he added. "The players are disappointed but we'll recover and get firing again on Sunday, it's an important game."

'Ronaldo and Casillas will leave Real Madrid'

    iker-casillas-cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_ao0ahzjlwyga16krrlomszt7e.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas are "certain" to leave Real Madrid, according to the club's former goalkeeper Agustin Rodriguez.

Casillas' future has been the subject of speculation following his patchy form over the past 12 months and persistent rumours linking Madrid with Manchester United's David de Gea.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has often cut a frustrated figure in recent weeks and has upheld a blackout with mainstream media in recent weeks.Agustin is adamant that Madrid fans can expect both players to leave the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season, despite the club suggesting contrary.

"I think Iker Casillas is going to go, genuinely. And Cristiano, too. I'm certain on that," the 55-year-old, who spent 10 years at Madrid, told Radio Marca.
"We'll see in the news that comes out next Wednesday."

The European champions take on Juventus in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, having lost the first leg 2-1 in Turin.

Chiellini: Real Madrid clash my most prestigious for Juve

    giorgio-chiellini-cropped_qr7ixknih4bn1wf6wj8yj8tga.jpg

Giorgio Chiellini thinks Wednesday's Champions League semi-final decider at Real Madrid is the most prestigious game of his Juventus career so far.

The Scudetto holders have a 2-1 advantage going into the second leg, thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez, and have been boosted by the return from injury of Paul Pogba ahead of the Santiago Bernabeu clash.

Chiellini is excited to be potentially 90 minutes away from a Champions League final, though he is aware that the European champions are no rookies when it comes to high-pressure matches.

"We can't wait for Wednesday evening to come," the centre-back told Sky Sport. "This is the most prestigious and important game I'll be playing in since I joined the club.

"I've been here for a decade and 12 years have gone past since we last reached a Champions League semi-final.

"The entire stadium will be right behind Madrid and we'll have to try and put them under pressure. They are, however, experienced internationals who certainly won't be intimidated by the odd whistle by their own fans.

"I've played at the Bernabeu twice and we hope it doesn't end like last season, when we lost and I was sent off, but instead like the first game, when we won thanks to Alessandro Del Piero's double."

Juve, who have already claimed the Serie A title and reached the Coppa Italia final, are chasing their first-ever treble this season.

Liverpool players must improve after 'irreplaceable' Gerrard leaves - Lallana

    adamlallana_acbybn5157r418fuz7wd28hhx.jpg

Adam Lallana says Liverpool's midfielders must raise their game next season to compensate for the loss of Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard will join MLS club LA Galaxy at the end of this season and was given a standing ovation by both Liverpool and Chelsea fans as he was substituted during Sunday's 1-1 draw, in which he scored.

With only two games of his Liverpool career to go, Lallana has already begun to mentally prepare for life without the 34-year-old and feels every player is required to soften the blow.

"I feel we're all going to have to give an extra percentage to fill the gap left by Gerrard," Lallana told the club's official website.

"We all need to dig in and work hard because he is irreplaceable, really. I feel the best way to replace him is not just through one certain individual; it's going to be a combination of every single player.

"He's proved against Chelsea and last week against QPR, coming up with a goal, what a man he is and what a player he is for this club."

Luis Enrique: We must be at our best to beat Bayern

    luis-enrique-barcelona-bayern-munich-champions-league-06052015_11bbrptvvaag21s9hpy7poz9ig.jpg

Luis Enrique says he wants Barcelona to repeat their performance from the first-leg of their Champions League semi-final with Bayern Munich when they line up for the return fixture on Tuesday.

Two goals from Lionel Messi and an injury time strike from Neymar saw Barca secure a 3-0 lead heading into the second-leg in Munich this week. The Blaugrana coach has called for his side to put in a perfect display against the clinical side who humiliated his team at the same stage two years ago.

"We know how big Bayern Munich is and we will have to be at our best to progress," he told reporters. "If we take the lead it would be good for us. But Bayern has the quality to score and they did cause us problems in Barcelona."The common objective is to go to the final. We don't want the game to be a crazy one. We have to use our weapons to hurt our rivals.

"We want the game to be as similar as possible to the first leg. Everyone attacks and everyone defends. Bayern has a lot of potential to score goals. We will have to go out focused on the idea of winning."

Dunga to coach Brazil Olympic team

    dunga-cropped_1i1qq419yzu9tznkha15aj6da.jpg

Dunga will lead Brazil's bid for Olympic gold in football for a second time after being confirmed as coach Alexandre Gallo's replacement.

The current Selecao boss combined the senior job and Olympic duties in 2008, but they could only secure a bronze in Beijing. He will now lead Brazil in their quest for their first Olympic gold in Rio in 2016 – the one major title that has eluded the five-time world champions.

"The Brazilian national team's technical commission has reached an agreement for Alexandre Gallo to depart as coach of the Under-20 and Olympic teams after 27 months," a CBF statement said."Mario Rogerio Reis Micalle will take over the Under-20 team and the Olympic side will be led by coach Dunga until the 2016 Olympics."

Former coach Mano Menezes led Brazil to the final in London 2012, with a stellar squad including the likes of Neymar, Thiago Silva and Oscar, but they lost the gold medal match to Mexico.

Former Santos and Internacional boss Gallo's place in the national set-up had been under threat since leading Brazil's youth side to fourth place at the South American Youth Football Championship earlier this year.Current captain Neymar has expressed his desire to lead the team in Rio as one of Brazil’s three over age players in the tournament which is restricted to those under 23.

Dunga returned to the senior side in July last year after Brazil's ultimately disastrous World Cup campaign on home soil and has won all eight of his fixtures since reprising the role.

James: Real Madrid will show no fear against Juventus

    james-rodriguez-real-madrid_1ck2h5wrxz2wrzq3z8qlon0lh.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez has warned Juventus that his side will show no fear as they look to overturn a 2-1 deficit in their Champions League tie and reach the final.

Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez scored to give the Italian side a lead in Turin before Cristiano Ronaldo halved the deficit for a vital away goal for his side before Wednesday's semi-final second leg.

With Madrid looking to become the first side to retain the European crown in the Champions League era, James insists they know how Massimiliano Allegri's men will approach the encounter but Los Blancos are not afraid.

"Madrid fear no one," he told El Pais. "We respect many teams throughout the world, but we do not fear. We know what Italian teams are like. They defend well and we have to know how to address them. You must deal with it. If we play to our best, then we will be in the final.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored an incredible 54 goals in 51 games in all competitions this season, but James insists the team must not be overly reliant on him. The Colombian added that he is happy to work hard for the team instead of try and score on his own."Ronaldo cannot carry Real Madrid alone," he added.

"I do what the team needs me to do. I participate in all aspects of the game. The reason you work every day with every effort is to try to learn. We are always learning, always.”

:cool:Smalling: Van Gaal brought the best out in Young

    ashleyyoung-cropped_f2seqiyhvrgo1ku3ebvf8kabj.jpg

The confidence Louis van Gaal has shown in Ashley Young has helped the winger become a "terrific" player for Manchester United this season, according to his team-mate Chris Smalling.

Young was tipped to be one of the first out of the door when Van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford in July, but he has been one of United's most consistent performers this season in the club's quest for Champions League football.

The 29-year-old played a key role in Saturday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, earning a first-half penalty and setting up Marouane Fellaini for the match-winning goal as United all but secured a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Smalling believes Van Gaal has helped turn the attacker into a more lethal player and feels Roy Hodgson could do worse than selecting Young for the first time since 2013 when England take on Republic of Ireland and Slovenia this summer.

"Ashley was terrific," the defender said. "Every time he got the ball he looked like he was going to beat his man. He's been a real threat the last few weeks."

"It could be a confidence thing and the manager showing faith in him. When you've got that you just build on it.

"He's quick and he can go both ways. He can cut in and have a shot or he can get past and put a cross in with his other foot.

"I think it's the unpredictability he's got. I think England could always do with a player like that. He's been there before and I'm sure he won't be far off."

Muller: Bayern can shock world football

    thomas-muller-bayern-munich-17052014_utk1acjy94uj1saqzf0dq3i7m.jpg

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller believes his side can make a statement to the world of football by overcoming Barcelona.

Pep Guardiola's side's chances of reaching the Champions League final are remote after they lost 3-0 in the first leg of the last-four tie at Camp Nou.

However, Muller is eyeing an ambitious second-leg comeback in Tuesday's return game at the Allianz Arena, which he believes would shock the rest of Europe.
"I am neither very euphoric nor very pessimistic," he said at a press conference.
"We need to take our chances. Everyone knows that things were better before. We will have a plan.

"That first leg was a huge disappointment. But since we left Camp Nou we've wanted to make up for it. If we go through, it will be a statement for the world of football. This is the plan and it's not stupid.

"In football, many things are possible. That's why there's still hope and we still believe in ourselves. We can't expect things to go like against Porto. But that's what we need.

"We have to find the right mix of better attacking and more calmness on the ball. The three-man defence was a risk against a three-man attack."The coach will prepare us well and the rest is will and support from the fans."

Muller went on to add that the recent slump in form has not affected the mood of Guardiola."I haven't noticed any difference. But of course, right after a decisive defeat the mood is not good.

"We have nothing to lose against Barca and this is how the players and the coach are approaching the match. We will give it a try, it is not over yet. We will give everything until the referee blows his whistle."

Aguero: Manchester City want revenge over Chelsea next season

    sergioaguero-cropped_1hwa6botcpr4l1ihw1ovkorzew.jpg

Sergio Aguero insists Manchester City will be ready to challenge Chelsea for the Premier League title next season and warns "there is always revenge in football".

The Argentine scored a clinical hat-trick in City's 6-0 demolition of QPR on Sunday to send Chris Ramsey's men tumbling back into the Championship and improve his season's tally to 25 goals.

But his heroics haven't been enough to prevent Chelsea ending City's limp title defence by beating Crystal Palace earlier this month to become champions for the first time in five years.

Nevertheless, the 26-year-old is adamant that he and his City team-mates will be ready to resume the battle for domestic supremacy next season.

"We lost a lot of points this season and now we are in good form, having won four games in a row so we must continue like this for the two remaining games," Aguero told City's official website.

"We want to finish the best we can and start next season fighting for every title. This season wasn't as we expected but we will face new challenges next season and there is always revenge in football.

"The club will decide what players they bring in but our mind has to be the same and go for every title since the beginning."

Aguero was also keen to play down the prospect of being crowned the Premier League's top goalscorer - he sits five goals clear of Harry Kane with two games remaining - and says it is more important for City to finish the season well.

"I'm happy with my hat-trick and now we have two games left so hopefully I can win the award but the most important thing is to qualify for the Champions League," he added.

"To be second or third is the same in terms of Champions League qualification but we would like to finish second because we always want to finish as high as we can in the table."

Guardiola rejects City talk: I will be at Bayern next season

    pep-guardiola-fc-porto-fc-bayern-munchen-champions-league-15042015_1cqq8n9ugdkkn1i972c9nayl3e.jpg

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has insisted that he has no intention of moving to Manchester City at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga champions have lost their last four games in all competitions, including a 3-0 defeat to the Spaniard's former club Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final last week.

Those results have sparked rumours Guardiola could leave Bayern for the Etihad, with former Bavarians and City midfielder Dietmar Hamann claiming he was already in advanced talks. However, the 44-year-old has rejected the speculation and is adamant he will be at the Allianz Arena next season.

"I've said it 200 million times: I have one year left on my contract. I'll stay here next season. That is all," he insisted at a press conference.

Bayern face Barcelona in the return leg of their European tie on Tuesday facing a seemingly impossible task of overturning their first leg defeat having failed to score an away goal. But despite needing at least three goals to remain in the tie, Guardiola has ruled out the prospect of adopting a gung-ho tactical approach.

"We must be patient. We can't do everything in the first 15 to 20 minutes. First we must play football, then we'll see what happens."It's not easy to take play catch up and control the game. We'll try.

"They have a 3-0 advantage but it's just a game. We'll give it a try and focus on playing our game, not just the result.

"I'm not thinking about what happens if Barca score. If they score one, we'll need five. Barca have scored 27 goals in their last seven games and have conceded none.

"We must try to have more of the ball than they do."

:rofl:Alaba: Bayern will win 4-0 - and I'll be back for the final

    david-alaba-fc-bayern-munchen_d2ogiw51ek811dfzk0er3fu4t.jpg

David Alaba is adamant Bayern Munich will win their Champions League semi-final second leg 4-0 against Barcelona.

A double from Lionel Messi and a late goal on the break from Neymar sealed an emphatic first-leg win for the Liga leaders to leave Pep Guardiola's side needing a minor miracle to reach the final.

Alaba, who is currently sidelined through injury, has no doubt over his side's ability to record another remarkable comeback and hopes to be fit for the showpiece in Berlin against either Real Madrid or Juventus.

"We'll win 4-0 and I hope I'm fit to play the final in Berlin," he was quoted as saying by AS.Medhi Benatia, meanwhile, says his team-mates may as well not bother turning up for the game unless they believe they can overturn the aggregate deficit.

"It won't be easy, but whomever doesn't believe would be better off staying at home," said the former Roma man."We've got a great team and we can score a bucketload at home. We've proven it."
