Chile 3-3 Mexico: Vuoso cancels out Vidal's double in thrilling draw

Two goals from Arturo Vidal were not enough for Chile as Mexico held the Copa America hosts to a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Vicente Vuoso put Miguel Herrera’s side in front against the run of play by rounding off a swift counter-attacking move but Vidal quickly brought Chile back on level terms with well-taken header 60 seconds later.

Mexico went ahead again via Raúl Jiménez’s superb header but Eduardo Vargas replied with a header of his own three minutes before half-time.

After the restart, Chile were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute as Gerardo Flores collided with Vidal inside Mexico’s area and the Juventus midfielder stepped up to send Jesús Corona the wrong way.

But Mexico capped a gritty display by finding an equaliser in the 66th minute as Adrián Aldrete’s raking pass found Vuoso, whose side-footed finish comfortably beat the onrushing Claudio Bravo.
Chile also had two goals contentiously ruled out in the second half. Jorge Valdívia’s stunning effort was chalked off after Vidal was judged to be offside, while after Mexico’s equaliser, Alexis Sanchez met Mauricio Isla's cross with a finish from close range but the Arsenal forward was denied by the assistant’s flag.

The draw has sent Chile to the top of Group A, ahead of Bolivia only by goal difference, while Mexico remain third after securing their second point of the campaign.

Chile face unbeaten Bolivia in their final group game on Saturday, while Mexico meet Ecuador, who are yet to register a point in the Copa America, on Friday evening.

If Paul Pogba is worth €80m, what is Arturo Vidal's worth?

    seleccion-chilena-chile-vs-mexico-150615_1mpbp9z86r7ml14gvcnxlcpfoz.jpg

Arturo Vidal is a man on a mission. His target is to bring the Copa America to Chile for the first time and he intends to drag the rest of his team-mates towards that goal, no matter what.

The Juventus powerhouse was at his influential best in the thoroughly enjoyable 3-3 draw with Mexico in Group A and the rest of his compatriots are struggling to keep up. His fantastic first-half header brought his side level before his expert cross found the on-running Eduardo Vargas, who finished excellently.

In the second half his dynamic run from deep drew a foul from Gerardo Flores and a deserved penalty. For the second match in succession, he held his nerve to convert. This was a truly all-round display, but he will be frustrated that those around him couldn’t provide the support needed to win the match.

Alexis Sanchez has a tendency at times to simply try too hard and this was one of those nights where his runs meandered aimlessly and his finishing was notably askew. The defensive unit, one that offered Ecuador many opportunities in the opening match, were individually and collectively shambolic. Crosses into the area are not enjoyed by Gonzalo Jara or Gary Medel and they once again showed severe vulnerability. The long, hopeful ball that allowed Matias Vuoso to level the game was horrendously fielded by Miiko Albornoz and Claudio Bravo. Chile are a team willing to give up chances all too easily.

    1533122.jpg

But Vidal’s impact was the abiding memory of the evening and his importance cannot be underestimated. He is the beating heart of this team, the figurehead that they all look to, and it’s impossible to consider his form in this tournament without assessing the transfer value being attached to his Juventus midfield associate, Paul Pogba.

The figure to secure his services is supposedly in the region of €80 million, an eye-watering valuation and it only begs the question – how much is Vidal worth? Granted, a significant amount of Pogba’s fee is based on his age; at 22 he has a decade at the very top ahead of him. Vidal is 28 and his combative style suggests he may not be able to prolong his career longer than perhaps one major transfer. The player has regularly stated his contentment in Italy and numerous bids were rebuffed last summer, but for any team – particularly in the Premier League – he should be among their thoughts.

With a player like him there’s simply no concern attached. No concern that he won’t give everything he has, no concern attached to his ability with the ball at his feet, with intelligent passes and timely contributions completing the package. And there’s certainly no doubt that team-mates gravitate towards him and in turn he galvanises them into a unit. Now that his knee troubles appear to be forgotten he is as close as it gets to a risk-free signing. Juventus in turn know that he’d be next to impossible to replace.

Chile need to top Group A to remain in Santiago for their quarter-final and Mexico’s display, a massive improvement on their drab showing against Bolivia, means that La Roja will need a result in their final fixture to do so. With Vidal, now on three goals for the tournament, they remain a thrilling if flawed proposition but if the other key players in the side can take his lead, then that elusive first title can be theirs.

Man United should go for Aguero, not Kane, says Cole

    sergio-aguero-manchester-city-premier-league-25042015_od3le1rsp0701on6l60zxf3nq.jpg

"Manchester United need to compete in Europe and for the championship as well. He's a baby and still learning his trade.

"Whoever comes to Manchester United as a centre forward is going to be under a hell of a lot of pressure. They need to get somewhere and if I was being cheeky, I would give you £60m (€82m) for Aguero because Aguero, fit, is the best centre forward in the Premier League.

"Fit, firing, hes unbelievable. You can imagine him playing alongside Wayne Rooney. It wouldn't be bad, would it?"

    Official: AC Milan sack Inzaghi

    filippo-inzaghi-milan-roma-serie-a-09052015_19ysw4jbjza1d1mkjrsip41ics.png

AC Milan have confirmed the dismissal of coach Filippo Inzaghi halfway through his two-year contract with the Italian outfit. The former youth team coach only took charge of the senior squad last summer, succeeding fellow club legend Clarence Seedorf at the helm.

However, after a disappointing 2014-15 campaign in which Milan failed to qualify for Europe - finishing 10th in Serie A - the Rossoneri decided to part company with the World Cup winner.

"AC Milan announces that it has sacked the coach of the first-team squad, Filippo Inzaghi, who has been thanked for the work done," read a short statement released on the club's official website, confirming what everyone suspected for weeks.

Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi had already been publicly pursuing a new coach, having done his utmost to try to persuade former boss Carlo Ancelotti to return to San Siro after his Real Madrid exit.

However, with Ancelotti having opted to take a break from the game to recover from scheduled back surgery, the Rossoneri are now set to hire Sinisa Mihajlovic, who stepped down as Sampdoria coach at the end of last season.

Official: AC Milan appoint Mihajlovic as new coach

    sinisa-mihajlovic-sampdoria-coach-serie-a_152e20sshyy2b1fnxjlk8xlf4w.png

AC Milan have announced the appointment of Sinisa Mihajlovic as the club's new coach on a two-year contract.

The Serbian's arrival was confirmed just under 90 minutes after the Rossoneri confirmed the dismissal of Filippo Inzaghi halfway through his deal with the San Siro side on Tuesday.

Mihajlovic led Sampdoria to a seventh-placed finish in Serie A last season but stepped down at the end of the campaign, revealing in an open letter to the club's fans that he was seeking "another challenge".

The 46-year-old had initially been expected to succeed Rafael Benitez as Napoli boss but the former Inter defender has now returned to San Siro to take charge of the Nerazzurri's city rivals.

"Sinisa Mihajlovic, who has signed a two-year contract, will be the new coach of AC Milan for next season," read a statement on the Rossoneri's official website.
"The club wish him good luck in his work and the best results."

Milan had originally sought to re-hire Carlo Ancelotti, after he was sacked by Real Madrid last month, but the 55-year-old ultimately decided to follow through with his plan to take a break from the game in order to recover from scheduled back surgery.

Mihajlovic spent two years with Inter before retiring in 2006 and taking on the role of assistant coach Roberto Mancini, who is now back in charge of the Nerazzurri.
The set-piece specialist then took the top job at Bologna before enjoying spells with Catania, Fiorentina, Serbia and Samp.

Ronaldo rotation may be a problem for Benitez, fears Illgner

    gareth-bale-cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_1aezbmpsbllgq17q73mrc2w8sq.jpg

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Bodo Illgner fears new coach Rafael Benitez will clash with star forward Cristiano Ronaldo over squad rotation.

The Blancos parted company with Carlo Ancelotti last month - even though the Italian led the capital club to Champions League glory in 2014.

The decision did not go down well with Ronaldo, who had responded to the rumours surrounding his former coach's future by posting a picture of the pair of them on his Twitter profile accompanied by the text: "Hope we work together next season."

Benitez has now officially replaced Ancelotti at the helm and Illgner is worried that the Spaniard's propensity for rotating and resting players will upset Ronaldo, who has long been accustomed to starting every game.

"Ronaldo could become a problem for Benitez," the ex-West Germany international told Sport1. "He has to integrate him and Gareth Bale as part of the collective and maybe put them on the bench sometimes to allow them an essential break.

"In this case, Benitez has difficult work to do. He is known as a coach who likes to rotate but he has to do that in a smooth way. That will be his main challenge."
Illgner does not doubt Benitez's credentials but he still believes Ancelotti deserved another season in charge.

"Ancelotti should have been allowed to continue working for another year because many things happened during a tenure that were not good for him," the 48-year-old added."The sales of Xabi Alonso of Angel Di Maria were things that were not optimal for the structure of the team.

"But now Benitez begins again and can prove himself. Whether he fits in at Madrid, we'll see in the coming months."

'I can do €80m deal for Pogba,' claims Barcelona presidential candidate Benedito

    paul-pogba_15bb6vbqo95y01gfjx5er7q3vo.jpg

Barcelona presidential candidate Agusti Benedito has claimed he will able to convince Juventus to sell Paul Pogba for €80 million if he is elected.

The France international is one of the most coveted players in world football, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all interested in signing the 22-year-old.

Barca, meanwhile, are currently prevented from registering any players until 2016 on account of their year-long, Fifa-imposed transfer ban - but Benedito is adamant that he can do a deal for Pogba if he prevails in the ongoing presidential race."I have spoken to Pogba," he told 8 al dia. "First, I contacted Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, then spoke directly with the player.

"They have proposed an annual salary of €12m after tax and a transfer fee of €80m."Benedito also revealed that if he does land the top job at Camp Nou, he will seek a new shirt sponsor, stating that he is morally opposed to the current agreement with Qatar Sports Investment, which expires next year.

"They represent the finance of international jihadist terrorism," he argued. "We have one, two or even three alternatives which will pay more money than Qatar."

Benedito added that he is in no doubt that he is the right man to take charge of Barca - even though he freely admits he is by no means an aficionado of the game."I have a business consultancy which works extensively in Bogota and is centred in the Latin American market," he explained. "I’m a big football fan but I don’t know a great deal about the game.

"I dedicate my time to searching for talent in all parts of the world and, through that work, I have discovered that Manchester United is a club which works incredibly well."

Barca's presidential race will be decided on July 18.

Boca confirm Tevez talks in Chile

    carlos-tevez-training_h959v2t0y1tp147spvg6vdd5u.jpg

Boca Juniors have revealed club president Daniel Angelici has arrived in Chile to discuss a return to La Bombonera for Juventus striker Carlos Tevez.

The Argentina international still has a year to run on his contract with the Bianconeri but has always been open about his desire to finish his career at his first professional outfit.

Tevez is currently preparing for his country's Copa America clash with Uruguay in La Serena on Tuesday but Boca vice-president Oscar Moscariello has now confirmed that they have stepped up their efforts to bring the forward back home after the tournament.

"Angelici arrived in Chile this morning, but we haven’t had an update on the situation yet,” Moscariello told Tuttomercatoweb. “I don’t know if he’s had contact.

"Tevez is the idol of our supporters, a symbol of Boca, but also of Argentina. We’d be delighted to have him back with us.“We’ve spoken with his agent - Juve are fine with Boca talking to him, but we’ve especially been working with his agent.

“Now we’re waiting to meet Carlos to continue the negotiations.”Tevez joined Juventus from Manchester City in 2013 and has since fired the Old Lady to back-to-back Serie A titles, as well as the final of last season's Champions League.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has also confirmed his club's interest in signing the 31-year-old, while Paris Saint-Germain have offered the attacker a bumper contract to move to the Parc des Princes this summer.

Welbeck promises Arsenal fans he can be better next season

    dannywelbeck-cropped_107hzjyw73k3n1je690s8x54jy.jpg

Danny Welbeck has assured Arsenal fans he will perform better next season and thinks the club can push for the Premier League title next season.

The striker joined from Manchester United in a deal with €20 million last summer, going on to score four Premier League goals all season before a knee injury ruled him out of Arsenal's run-in and FA Cup success.

Many of Arsenal's squad called for a serious title tilt next season after retaining the FA Cup, and Welbeck feels an improved start will be key and is determined to prove his worth at the Emirates Stadium.

"To miss the FA Cup final was obviously disappointing for me, but great for the club and the fans to retain the trophy," Welbeck said at the launch of Arsenal's new home kit.

"This is the first one I have won and hopefully there are going to be more in the future. We definitely want to push on as a club, with the players we have got there is no reason why we should not be up there challenging for the Premier League, it is something which is within our ambitions as a team.

"Our slow start at the beginning of the season cost us in May, and when we look back on the points we should have got, then we would have been right up there.

"I know I definitely have more levels to go, and I am really looking forwards to doing that next season."

'Bale & Benzema have Manchester United X-Factor'

    karim-benzema-gareth-bale-real-madrid-la-liga-05042015_tw0y147q7jnb1sdmgbab66nb7.jpg

Andrew Cole has welcomed talk of Manchester United potentially signing Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, insisting that the Real Madrid duo would bring an "X-Factor" to the Premier League club.

Goal understands that Arsenal believe Benzema would be interested in a move to north London, should Madrid decide to sell, while United have also been reported as a potential destination for the Madrid striker.

Former Tottenham winger Bale, meanwhile, has been on United's radar and Cole has suggested that he would love to see the duo at Old Trafford next season.

He told Goal: "I like him [Benzema], he's a very good player and played at the highest level for a numerous amount of years.

    1531572.jpg

"He's done it at international level and you look at that and say that could definitely work with him and Rooney.

"What do the fans want? That's what the fans want. If Man United have got €150-200 million to spend and there's talk of Bale, then that's what the fans want to see, that's the X-Factor, for people to say 'wow'.

"Manchester United has always been that kind of club, always wanting big name players to come here and fans to get buoyant about."

Cole also called on Louis van Gaal to give United supporters what they want and play an attacking brand of football next season after criticisms that the Red Devils were too concerned with playing possession football.

He added: "It's different to what the fans have been used to. When you watch Manchester United you expect them to play a certain way with a high-tempo and score loads of goals.

"It's been different this season. The way we set up is like international football, where they keep possession of the football and don't really hurt teams.

"In the Premier League, it's not really played like that. You look at Chelsea - they started the season off as the best team by far and closed it out with Jose Mourinho being Jose Mourinho. They are the benchmark.

"If you're going by what he did with the national team then that's the way they played. When you don't have pace in the team you have to play a certain way, and we don't have any pace in the team.

"Will he change? I don't know. We'll have to wait and see if his philosophy changes. The way they played this season, it's not typical Man United."

Henry: Jackson Martinez would be good for Arsenal

    jackson-martinez-porto_1qsyxfns6nl9618nadv996hlxp.jpg

Theirry Henry feels Jackson Martinez would excel at Arsenal amid ongoing links with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The 28-year-old was believed to be on the verge of a big-money move from Porto to AC Milan last week, though the player has moved to play down reports of an imminent transfer.

Arsene Wenger talked up the Colombia international in February, insisting the striker "is on the list of many clubs", and club legend Henry praised Martinez's attributes ahead of an expected decision on his future.

"Jackson Martinez can be a good fit," Henry told reporters. "But you already have the likes of Giroud who looks a bit like him as a striker in the way they play, with their back to the goal.

"He can be a good addition. He had a good season in the Champions League but you have guys already.

"I think Giroud is more or less the same type of guy. I guess maybe Martinez is a bit more powerful and can run a bit more in behind but we'll see what Arsene's going to do.

"Overall the Arsenal strikers didn't do badly this season."

Chelsea want Begovic to replace Arsenal-bound Cech

    asmir-begovic-stoke_yjp5bofxng0x12zl1yjc5mfno.jpg

Chelsea are in talks to sign Asmir Begovic from Stoke as a replacement for Petr Cech as the club's second choice goalkeeper.

Cech has told Chelsea that he wants to join Arsenal this summer and is confident that the Premier League champions will sanction a transfer across London.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wants to line up a high quality goalkeeper to provide genuine competition for Thibaut Courtois before the club allow Cech to leave.

Blues bosses are understood to be "pushing hard" to sign Begovic, who has a year left on his Stoke contract and has so far rejected the club’s attempts to agree a new deal.

Begovic, 27, would have to be persuaded to give up regular Premier League starts and work as understudy to Courtois, but Chelsea hope to attract him with a lucrative salary package and the promise of a similar number of appearances as made by Cech last season.

Cech played 16 times for Chelsea in all competitions last term but the 33-year-old wants to leave for a No.1 role, with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain also linked with summer bids.

The Czech international wants to move to Arsenal as the Gunners target a Premier League title challenge next season to build on back-to-back FA Cup triumphs.

Cech is keen to stay in London to avoid uprooting his family, with his two children settled at school in the capital.

He has just one year remaining on his contract but Chelsea are expected to demand a transfer fee of around €20 million to sell the former Rennes man to a direct rival.

Mourinho has spoken of his reluctance to let Cech join a Premier League club but claims he is powerless, with the final decision over the goalkeeper's future to be made by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Tomas Rosicky, Cech's international team-mate, told Goal on Tuesday that he has spoken to the Chelsea star about his potential transfer to the Emirates Stadium.

"I would be lying if I said I didn't speak about it with Petr because it's no secret he wants to change clubs," Rosicky told Goal at the launch of Arsenal’s new Puma kit. "He will have a lot of options to go to a good club."
