The big news in aviation today is that the three biggest US airlines – Delta, American and United – are running a campaign aimed at limiting the growth of Emirates, Etihad and Qatar in the US market.

These US airlines have published a report, which they say contains evidence that Emirates has received billions of dollars in subsidies. According to this paper, Emirates is competing unfairly under the terms of the open skies agreement between the US and UAE governments.

For the record, Emirates does not receive any subsidy from the UAE government.

Clearly, our competitors just cannot understand how Emirates has managed to succeed without government support or handouts. In our 30 years of operations, we have had to educate our critics and European competitors on our business model.

But some of these old critics are taking the opportunity to join the US airlines in complaining rather than competing where it counts – in the skies. They would rather fight in the hallways of government than in the global marketplace where they have to work hard to win travellers’ hearts.

As we have done in the past, we will prove the US airlines’ allegations are false. This week, colleagues from different departments and I met with several US government officials in Washington DC. I’m confident that we will get a fair chance to put before them and the world our point-by-point rebuttal.

However, we want to use our time well, and not waste it on running counter campaigns against these US airlines. We are going to stay focussed on what we are doing, and continue to do it well. We will keep investing in our people, products, services and brand - so that travellers globally will continue to choose to fly with us.

We will stick to our plans for the US: expand our services, and keep proving the benefits of our services to consumers, trade, businesses and economies. And we are winning many hearts along the way – we have received letters and expressions of support from consumers, airports, and tourism and commercial entities in America.

We will deal with the spread of inaccurate information about us, but let’s not get distracted from our goals.

Emirates is the most valuable airline brand in the industry, our products and services are way ahead of our competitors, and I believe we have the world’s best cosmopolitan employees. Each and every one of us just needs to stay focussed on doing our jobs to the high standards we expect of ourselves. And then no matter what others say, we will always be guaranteed of success. Do share your thoughts with me here.

Here’s to free skies and fair competition. Here’s to always doing our best.

Hello Tomorrow.
