First season at Barcelona was terrible - Vermaelen

    lionel-messi-thomas-vermaelen-barcelona_hzg3bi3e0xlt1dz5n417cd75b.jpg

Thomas Vermaelen is itching to start the new season after admitting that his first year with Barcelona has been "terrible".

The Belgium international joined last summer from Arsenal but had to wait until the final Liga game of the season to make his debut, as a result of significant hamstring and thigh injuries.

Luis Enrique's side went on to clinch a second treble of Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League, but Vermaelen accepts he scarcely felt part of it.

"I got a medal, but you don't feel like you have won the treble," the 29-year-old told Press Association Sport after playing an hour of Barca's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in Santa Clara on Saturday."I was very happy for the team, but it's not like I contributed a lot for the cups we won.

"Last year was terrible. It was a nasty injury, a very difficult one and I am very happy that the feeling in the legs is perfect again, like it should be."Vermaelen says he is now relishing the prospect of returning to regular action after putting his injury nightmare behind him.

"I am very happy and very pleased to be back," said the former Gunners skipper. "There's nothing better than to feel fit."I feel 100 per cent now. We just started pre-season so I am adapting still but I had 60 minutes against a good opponent so I am very pleased with that."

Vermaelen faces competition for places from Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Marc Bartra and Jeremy Mathieu, but he says a battle for the first team is only to be expected at the world's top clubs."In a club like this there's loads of competition so that's normal," he added.

"We have a lot of great players. It's not easy but that's why you become a football player, to play for the best teams in the world and I am part of that."

Arsenal contract talks still ongoing, says Walcott

    1699842_heroa.jpg

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott insists discussions with the club over a new contract are ongoing.

The 26-year-old is entering the final 12 months of his current deal with the Gunners and has previously stated that he is happy to allow negotiations for an extension to extend past the start of the new season.

Walcott, who scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg on Sunday to secure the Emirates Cup, has been linked with a move away from the club this summer but insists that nothing has been decided yet.

"It's still in the process, so I'm sure if something happens everybody will know," he told BT Sport.

Arsene Wenger has fielded young talents Alex Iwobi, Isaac Hayden and Jeff Reine-Adelaide in the Emirates Cup this year, with the latter providing an assist to Walcott in Sunday’s victory.

And, having also been entrusted by the Gunners boss when he signed for an initial £5 million fee (€7m) in 2006 aged just 16, Walcott feels the trio are at the best club to develop their talents.

He said: "They play with a free spirit, and the manager gives them an opportunity and that's why he's so good at his job.

"That's why the club is fantastic to nurture those young talents who come through. You'll see more of them I'm sure this season, but they're going to flourish.

"Training with us every day they're only going to get better, but they fit in, they're Arsenal players and they showed some very good stuff out there today."

    Walcott deal 'closer', says Wenger

    theo-walcott-arsenal-18072015_dod1oaq72vcn1apsop8x3iern.jpg

Theo Walcott is close to signing his new contract at Arsenal, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

The England international is out of contract at the end of the coming season, having signed a three-and-a-half-year deal in January 2013.

Speculation surrounding his future has rumbled on and, while Walcott has yet to put pen to paper on a new contract, Wenger says that he is hopeful terms can be agreed.

"We're getting closer and closer. Hopefully we can finalise it very soon," said the Frenchman, who was also quizzed on the lack of striking arrivals in the summer.

"I can understand this question because we are in the transfer period but I can only repeat what I already said. I would not like it to be too detrimental."

Walcott, who himself has said that negotiations are ongoing, scored the only goal of the game on Sunday as Arsenal beat Wolfsburg to claim the Emirates Cup following a 6-0 hammering of Lyon a day earlier.

Playing in his preferred position - as a central striker - Walcott's winner was no surprise to Wenger.

"I’ve always said that he’s a goalscorer," he continued.

"He has the movement, he has the timing of the run, the speed for the finishing, and he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moments.

"When he gets into these positions he finishes well. Yesterday he nearly scored when he came on as a substitute, today he scored. I believe that Theo will score goals."

Pique: I'm one of the world's best defenders again

    gerard-pique-barcelona-preseason_6gr0qr1xyno12u45ji8shude.jpg

Gerard Pique believes he has fulfilled his vow to re-establish himself as one of the best centre-backs in world football.

The Spain international has been a first-team regular for the Catalans since rejoining the club from Manchester United in 2008, playing a key role in their treble triumph in his first season back at Camp Nou.

However, his form became the subject of much discussion during the 2013-14 campaign, with Pique admitting himself that his high standards had fallen.

The defender promised to rediscover his best form last season and he feels that he achieved that goal, with Pique once again prominent as Barca pulled off another treble."I fulfilled the vow to get back among the top centre-backs in the world," the 28-year-old told reporters on Sunday.

With his confidence in himself now clearly fully restored, Pique added: "In the future, I would like to be Barca captain."While Pique's place in Luis Enrique's XI is currently assured, the same cannot be said of team-mate Pedro, who is being linked with a move away from Camp Nou because of a lack of game time.

"Pedro's situation is very difficult because he has the three best attackers in the world - Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar - ahead of him," Pique added.
"But if Pedro leaves Barca, our squad will be weakened."And Pique does not want to see any departures before the close of the summer transfer window as he believes that Barca can sweep all before them this year, just as they did back in 2009.

"With this squad we can again aspire to win the sextet," he enthused.

PSG: No €120m bid for Ronaldo

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-roma-international-champions-cup-2015_1wvpp804tb47v1ib89866s9nv3.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain have rubbished reports that they have made a €120 million bid for Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.Several media outlets in the Middle East claimed on Saturday that the French champions, who are owned by Qatar Sports Investments, had lodged a world-record offer for the Portugal international.

However, the advisory team of PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has denied making any formal move for Ronaldo.

"It is quite untrue," a group spokesman is quoted as saying by MARCA.Ronaldo is under contract to Madrid until 2018 but there has been constant speculation about his future at the Santiago Bernabeu, not least following the sacking of popular head coach Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a return to Manchester United for years, but there has long been talk of the forward moving to PSG.Such speculation decreased because of the restrictions imposed upon the Ligue 1 champions for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations but a softening of the rules has led many pundits to predict another spending spree in the French capital.

However, according to reports in Spain, PSG - who have a good relationship with Madrid - do not intend to move for Ronaldo at this point in time.Indeed, the French titleholders are currently on the verge of signing Argentina winger Angel Di Maria from Old Trafford, with the deal set to be completed in the coming days.

    Szczesny confirms imminent Roma loan

    1682102_heroa.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has confirmed that he is set to join Roma on loan.

Goal revealed last week that the Poland international was to be allowed to move to the Serie A club, with the Gunners having signed Petr Cech from Chelsea this summer.

David Ospina and Damian Martinez are set to provide competition to the Czech Republic international in the 2015-16 season and, as such, Szczesny has been given permission to move to Italy.

The 25-year-old has now confirmed that he is set to fly to Rome on Monday as he looks to rubber-stamp the deal.

"Good evening, Giallorossi supporters, I am very happy because tomorrow I go to Rome. See you then,” he said in a video on his personal social networking page.

Arsene Wenger insists that the loan will not spell the end of Szczesny’s time in north London, despite confirming on Friday that the deal was “pretty much done.”

"He will have a future here because I rate him highly,” he added. “He already has huge experience."

Bartomeu: Barcelona will contest Uefa fine over Catalan flags

    josep-maria-bartomeu-barcelona-elections_i4j91ktghovh1ta0o0n75qdqo.jpg

Josep Maria Bartomeu has reiterated Barcelona 's determination to contest Uefa's decision to fine them over the presence of Catalan flags at the Champions League final, claiming the club will always "defend the right to freedom of expression".

The Blaugrana were fined €30,000 by the European game's governing body because of the presence of Catalan flags at last month's Champions League final win over Juventus in Berlin.

Uefa explained that the sanction was the a result of a breach of a regulation that forbids "the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or provocative nature".

However, Barca promptly stated that while they respected the ruling, they were ready to challenge it, and club president Bartomeu has now confirmed that they fully intend to press ahead with their appeal.

"Barcelona has always defended and will defend the right to freedom of expression," the Catalan told The Washington Post .

"Barcelona has never prohibited its members and fans from expressing their ideas and feelings in a peaceful manner, either in our stadium or any other football field where they travel to support our players."Barcelona disagrees with the Uefa sanction and has asked that the case be reviewed.

"As expressed in the previous statement, we are fully convinced that the rights of our partners are untouchable."We support our partners and fans and are faithful to the spirit of freedom with which has characterised this club since its foundation 115 years ago."

Barcelona support the pro-independence movement in Catalunya and have long been regarded as one of the key representations of the region's cultural identity.

Jackson: Messi & Ronaldo boss La Liga but Atletico can win the title

    jackson-martinez-colombia_l41ki81a3cgz1f6z3c5tafir5.jpg

Jackson Martinez says that while Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are La Liga's difference-makers, Atletico Madrid can challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the title.

The Colombia international completed his move to the Vicente Calderon on July 15, with the Rojiblancos agreeing to meet the €35 million buy-out clause in the striker's contract with previous club Porto.

Jackson was officially unveiled as an Atletico player on Sunday and promptly declared his intention to help Diego Simeone's famously industrious side beat Primera Division heavyweights Barca and Madrid to the 2015-16 title.

"Messi & Ronaldo make the difference in La Liga but we can compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid," he told reporters."I feel like I have joined a very committed side, one that is ambitious and demanding, and has a great coach.

"Atletico Madrid have done a great job in recent years and I just want to give my best and be happy."I want to repay all of the confidence that has been placed in me by the board, the coach and my tea-mates.

"I know what Atletico Madrid are about and I want to do my best. Goals will come for me through team work. Atletico are a winning team."Despite their relatively small budget compared to the Clasico duo, Atletico managed to win La Liga in 2014, pipping Barca to top spot, with Madrid coming home third.

However, the Catalans reclaimed the title last season thanks in no small part to Messi's 43 goals, while Ronaldo hit five more for the second-placed Blancos.

Hummels reveals why he stayed at Dortmund

    mats-hummels-borussia-dortmund-dfb-pokal-30052015_c4fxpxj31x0h168lgijc0pjw8.jpg

Mats Hummels has revealed how close he came to quitting Borussia Dortmund only to be persuaded into staying by new coach Thomas Tuchel.

BVB endured a dreadful start to the 2014-15 campaign and dropped into the relegation zone before the winter break.Although they eventually rallied during the second half of the season, Hummels still felt disillusioned with both Dortmund and himself.

However, after Jurgen Klopp stood down, Tuchel took charge and promptly set about convincing Hummels to remain at Signal Iduna Park."The first half of the 2014-15 season was a disaster for me in relation to my weight," the defender told Kicker. "I tend to comfort eat when I am frustrated.

"There were days where I would have liked to leave and days where I wanted to stay."But if I move I need to be 100 per cent convinced. I have to know if it works on every level. That wasn’t the case this year.

"I had a talk with Tuchel during the phase where I was still considering my future. I really liked what he said back then and how he said it. He addressed my personal mistakes right away."If a coach wants me to convince to stay, I really like it if he doesn't try to sugarcoat things but finds clear words.

"After the talk I had the feeling that working with him can make me stronger again. Now I really weigh a lot less and have returned in a much better shape than in 2014."

Hummels is also convinced that Tuchel is capable of knocking Bayern Munich off their perch, believing the former Mainz boss has the right attitude when it comes to tackling the Bundesliga champions.

"In Germany, too many clubs are too scared of Bayern, both on and off the pitch," the centre-half added."You often got the impression that many teams already wrote off their matches against Bayern before they were played.

"When Tuchel was at Mainz, they never did that and I always noticed that."Bayern have won the last three Bundesliga seasons, ending Dortmund's two-year reign at the top of Germany.

Official: Manchester United sign Sergio Romero

    1652962_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have completed the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The 28-year-old joins United on a free transfer after leaving Sampdoria earlier this summer and has signed a three-year contract with the option of a fourth season.

“I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United," Romero told the club's official website.

"To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me. Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career.”

    WwFLV7b.jpg

Romero has previously played under Van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar between 2007 and 2009, and is United's fifth signing of the summer following the acquisitions of Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

“Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper," said Van Gaal. "He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United.

"He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind! He will be a great addition to the team and I am looking forward to working with him once again.”

Romero's arrival is set to be followed by the departure of Victor Valdes. The Spaniard's attitude has been labelled a "big disappointment" by Van Gaal after he allegedly refused to play for United's reserves, and Valencia are in talks over a season-long loan deal.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal is hoping to keep David De Gea at United but has refused to rule out the possibility of the 24-year-old joining Real Madrid before the end of the transfer window.

'Man Utd need a superstar... but it won't be Ronaldo' - Van Gaal

    1691742_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal says Manchester United need to sign a world-class "creative" player, but insists that Cristiano Ronaldo will not join the club this summer.

United have been heavily linked with a move for the Real Madrid superstar in recent weeks, with Van Gaal hinting at a “surprise signing” in attack.

United have embarked on a major summer recruitment drive, acquiring Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmian and Memphis Depay, but Van Gaal is keen to add creativity to his squad.

Having spent in excess of £70 million already thus far, however, Van Gaal concedes that former club hero Ronaldo is out of his reach.

“We can use much more creativity,” he told reporters in the United States. “We have Wayne [Rooney], [Juan] Mata, [Memphis] Depay, [Ashley] Young, [Adnan] Januzaj, [James] Wilson, [Ander] Herrera. Young has had a fantastic season, but he is not a Neymar and we have to compete with that kind of class.

“When it is possible to buy, for a reasonable price, players from that level, we shall do that because they can contribute as they are better.

“Ronaldo? He may come, but it is not possible. Why not? Because you have the club [Real], Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much Manchester United want to spend.”

The transfer window is set to shut in six weeks and Van Gaal maintains that the club must flex their considerable financial muscle if they are to mount a serious assault on the Premier League title in 2015-16.

Indeed, the Dutchman says that the club’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in April is serving as a motivation to recruit a player in the mould of Eden Hazard, who scored the winner at Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea have Hazard,” Van Gaal added. “He can always make goals, he can always make an action and decide a goal. Chelsea also have Willian and Oscar. Manchester City have [Sergio] Aguero, it’s the same type. Barcelona has [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Luis] Suarez. We as Manchester United have to compete with these clubs, so we have to look also for that kind of players.

“You need creative players. You need that because you have to disorganise [teams that park] the bus and, next year, there might be more teams who are parking the bus, so we must look for more creativity.”

Van Gaal, though, is satisfied with his business thus far, and believes United are a better team now than they were when he took the reins at the club last season.

“With Morgan Schneiderlin, with Bastian Schweinsteiger, with Memphis Depay, with Matteo Darmian, we are better than last year. But we have to be much better and I say to you that means the creativity of my players in the front,” he said.

“At Chelsea, we didn’t score and they scored and that is the difference in the game. If we had won that game, the gap would have been five points and the pressure was high [on Chelsea].”
