Ronaldo: Difficult Champions League draw for Real Madrid

    cristiano-ronaldo-awesome-gallery_1x179y0bqxfyn1m4lsyrwbtfd0.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo says that Real Madrid's target is to win the Champions League - despite being handed a "difficult" draw for the group stage of this year's competition.

Los Blancos were placed in the same pool as Ligue 1 titleholders Paris Saint-Germain, Ukrainian Premier League runners-up Shakhtar Donetsk and Swedish champions Malmo in Friday's draw in Monaco, as they bid to win the trophy for an 11th time.

"More or less the goal remains the same as last year and always," said Ronaldo. "We know that the group stage will be difficult but we will try to pass and win the competition. We'll see what happens."

Madrid were crowned champions of Europe in 2014, beating city rivals Atletico in the final in Lisbon, but were unable to retain the trophy last season as they were upset by Juventus in the semi-finals.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, failed to win Uefa's Best Player in Europe award for last season, with Messi collecting the accolade after playing a key role in Barcelona's 2014-15 triumph.

    Pique's four-game ban upheld

    gerard-pique-barcelona_1e3mj4bw10p041tgs7djw8rsfl.jpg

Barcelona will be without the services of star defender Gerard Pique for four games after his appeal against the ban for verbally abusing a match official was rejected.

The Spain international was dismissed on the hour mark for unleashing a verbal tirade at the linesman during the 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao after an offside decision did not go his side's way.

Though he later apologised for his behaviour, he insisted that the extent of the abusive language was exaggerated and the club appealed the decision.

Pique had been hopeful that he would see the length of the ban cut after but the authorities have now ruled that he must sit out four matches.

Having already missed the first game of the Liga season, coincidentally against Athletic at San Mames, he will now be unavailable for Saturday's match against Malaga, the daunting trip to Atletico Madrid on September 12 and September 20 meeting with Levante at Camp Nou.

Barcelona lost the Supercopa 5-1 on aggregate, but bounced back to win their first Liga game of the season 1-0, despite Lionel Messi's missed penalty.

De Bruyne set for Manchester City medical

    1797902_heroa.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne is set to undergo a medical on Friday as Manchester City edge closer to finally completing a deal to sign the Wolfsburg playmaker, Goal understands.

City identified De Bruyne as a primary target ahead of the summer and have pursued the Belgian throughout the transfer window.

Wolfsburg manager Klaus Allofs suggested on Thursday morning that while De Bruyne was keen to join City, a deal was yet to be agreed.

But at the Champions League draw in Monaco on Thursday evening, Allofs suggested progress had been made in negotiations and that a deal is nearing completion.

“We got closer," Allofs said. "Maybe there will be a decision in the next hours one or the other way – [the] latest on Friday.”

Wolfsburg also confirmed that both De Bruyne and Ivan Perisic - who has been heavily linked with Inter - have been left out of the squad for the Bundesliga meeting with Schalke on Friday.

City are now understood to have scheduled a medical for De Bruyne on Friday as they close in on the 24-year-old.

Brian Marwood, City's Managing Director of Football Services, declined to comment when asked about De Bruyne at the Champions League draw, but did indicate there could be players both joining and leaving the club before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

Borussia Dortmund 7-2 Odd (agg 11-5): Reus runs riot in BVB rout

    1839892_heroa.jpg

Marco Reus hit a hat-trick as Borussia Dortmund stormed into the group stage of the Europa League by hammering Odd 7-2 at Signal Iduna Park to progress 11-5 on aggregate.

The Germany international struck a hat-trick for Thomas Tuchel's men as they raced through the play-off round with an 11-5 aggregate triumph over the Norwegian side.

Having opened up a 3-0 lead in last week's first leg, only to lose 4-3, Odd again momentarily stunned their illustrious opponents as Ole Halvorsen levelled the tie with the game's opening goal, but it only served to stir Dortmund - who were 4-1 ahead by half-time.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan's eighth goal of the season got them level, before two from Reus and a fourth from Shinji Kagawa put Dortmund in complete control.

The goals continued to come after the restart as Ilkay Gundogan opened his account for the season, before Reus was on hand to score his third after 57 minutes.

Oliver Berg grabbed a consolation for Odd just after the hour, but it was Dortmund celebrating at the final whistle - after Kagawa had scored again - as they booked their place in Friday's group-stage draw.

Dortmund fans may have felt worryingly familiar as the hosts' early attempts to put the tie out of Odd's reach found goalkeeper Sondre Rossbach in fine form, and those heroics were subsequently rewarded as the unmarked Halvorsen stooped low to head Thomas Grogaard's corner past Roman Weidenfeller.

But Dortmund were behind on the night for just six minutes as Mkhitaryan levelled with a stunning 20-yard strike across Rossbach, having cut in from the left flank.

The relentless pace from Dortmund continued and a minute later they were ahead, Gundogan jinking away from two men before finding Reus, who swept the ball home.

As Dortmund kicked into top gear, Reus was again on hand to convert from close range, after a perfect cross from Mkhitaryan.

Kagawa added a fourth as the Odd defence struggled to live with Dortmund's slick passing and if Odd thought the break might slow Dortmund down, they were wrong.

Just five minutes after the restart, Gundogan's powerful drive was too hot to handle for Rossbach, who could only parry the 20-yard effort into the net.

Reus ghosted in at the back post to complete his hat-trick on the end of another inviting cross from the industrious Mkhitaryan, but the visitors gave themselves something to cheer as Berg grabbed their fifth goal of the tie after a neat lay-off from Halvorsen.

But a defensive error allowed substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to give Kagawa a tap-in to bring up a madcap final scoreline, which could have even been added to before the full-time whistle, had Mats Hummels' header dipped under the crossbar rather than flick the top of it.

Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton (agg 2-1): Saints slip out of Europa League

    1788352_heroa.jpg

Southampton's Europa League dreams were shattered by Midtjylland on Thursday, as a Morten Rasmussen goal gave the Danish side a 2-1 aggregate victory over Ronald Koeman's side.

Southampton showed little of the style and attacking poise that earned them a place in Europe during last season's Premier League campaign, and they were ultimately sent packing on a disappointing, rain-soaked night in Denmark.

Rasmussen's goal came against the run of play, but it turned the tide of the contest completely, with Koeman watching on helplessly as his players struggled to muster a comeback after the break.

Midfielders Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama, suffering from a hip problem and a stomach bug, respectively, were sorely missed by Southampton, who may struggle to keep the pair beyond the close of the transfer window as a number of clubs chase their respective signatures.

Whether or not he manages to hold on to them, Koeman will need to find a way to reinvigorate his players after the European dream they fought so hard for last season was washed away in the rain.

In contrast to how they ended it, Southampton started the game with real intent and Jose Fonte had a brilliant diving header cleared off the line after just four minutes before Jay Rodriguez turned down a shooting opportunity to tee up James Ward-Prowse, whose effort was well blocked by goalkeeper Johan Dahlin.

Southampton's high pressing game forced the hosts onto the back foot, and it seemed that Koeman's side were most likely to break the deadlock when Steven Davis latched onto Graziano Pelle's clever knockdown, but his well-struck shot was saved by Dahlin at his near post.

Midtjylland had barely threated when Rodriguez was robbed of possession near his own box after 28 minutes, but Kristian Bak-Nielsen's low cross was deftly controlled by Rasmussen, who slammed the ball into the far corner of the net.

Buoyed by the goal, the home side took a grip on the game, and might have added a second when the lively Pione Sisto fired over the bar just before half time.

Midtjylland remained on top after the break, with Rasmussen missing a golden chance to extend their lead with a free header from close range, but he missed the target.

Southampton struggled to find space going forward, and Koeman sent on Dusan Tadic for Steven Caulker to add an attacking threat.

Tadic made an immediate impact, sending a dipping shot narrowly wide from 25 yards, but opportunities remained scarce as Midtjylland dominated the key midfield battles.

A Ward-Prowse free kick appeared to be blocked by the arm of Rasmussen, only for referee Liran Liany to wave away the ensuing protests as the visitors' desperation grew.

Daniel Royer should have compounded Southampton's misery when he played a neat one-two with Martin Pusic and fired over the crossbar from 20 yards, but his side weren't troubled as they reached proper European competition for the first time in seven years.

Tuchel thrilled with 'aggressive' Dortmund display

    thomastuchel-cropped_1hm6puw98b8p41pbds1ftvkk2c.jpg

Thomas Tuchel praised his Borussia Dortmund side's tenacity as they crushed Odd 7-2 on Thursday to seal their place in the group stage of the Europa League with a resounding 11-5 aggregate win.

Marco Reus led the way for the Bundesliga outfit as he applied the finishing touch to three impressive moves to seal a hat-trick, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Shinji Kagawa and Ilkay Gundogan also got on the scoresheet.

Dortmund were rampant at times against an Odd side who struggled to live with their pace and movement, Mats Hummels one of a number of players wasting late chances to extend their advantage even further.

"I am very happy," Tuchel said after a seventh straight win under his leadership. "The start was good, then we gave Odd their goal. First shot, first goal.

"But we continued to play very consistently, found room and created a lot of chances.

"There was a good rhythm. We kept the pace very high and achieved very spectacular goals.

"We did not let up, minute by minute we created more pressure. I am excited at how aggressive we played."

Wenger: Coquelin is the best defensive midfielder in Europe

    1410492_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger insists that Francis Coquelin is statistically the best defensive midfielder in Europe.

Coquelin has emerged as a key player for Arsenal in recent months following his return from a loan spell at Charlton Athletic in December.

The Frenchman has appeared in all three of the club’s Premier League games thus far this season but was criticised by Sky pundit Gary Neville in the build-up to Monday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool, and Wenger has defended the 24-year-old.

Indeed, Wenger believes that when all statistics are factored in, Coquelin is the finest player in his position on the continent.

“Coquelin has the best defensive statistics and numbers in Europe. You watch football like I watch football. I don’t know what people see. Defensively, Coquelin is doing a great job,” he told reporters.

“Look, I am not against opinion. People can say they don’t think Arsenal is good enough. I accept that. But it is dangerous to say 'He will never be a player’ — especially when the comment has come from people in football.

“It doesn’t annoy me, but what is a concern is that it puts pressure on players. I believe that we are in a football job.

"People who have been in the game, I love that they go on television. But I would like them to help people to love football even more.”

Herrera: Manchester United must challenge for the Champions League

    1835692_heroa.jpg

Ander Herrera insists that Manchester United must attempt to win the Champions League, because of the club's history of winning trophies.

United were drawn into Group B of the competition on Thursday, along with PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg.

Herrera concedes that United must “go step by step” as they attempt to win the club’s first European trophy since 2008 - but maintains that it is the players' responsibility to ensure that they challenge for Europe's elite prize.

"It's too early,” he replied when asked by reporters if United were challengers.

“We have to go step by step, but of course, we are representing one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"The history of the club says we have to fight for all the trophies, but we have to be prudent.

“Hopefully we can take Manchester United where they deserve to be."

United captain Wayne Rooney ended his goal drought in the club’s 4-0 win over Club Brugge on Wednesday, which secured a 7-1 aggregate win, and Herrera, who netted the fourth goal, has hailed the England international.

"It was a great night for Wayne," said Herrera. "He is our captain and leader and we are happy for him. When he scores everything is always easier for us.

"He is our captain and our leader and he is always helping us and thinking about the team.

"It is important for him to score, but it is also important for him that we win.”

Tottenham deal for Son not complete, say Leverkusen

    heungminson-cropped_1krnmt4ozm7i21igrbtb1boz8m.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Michael Schade insists no deal has been struck with Tottenham for Heung-Min Son, despite sporting director Rudi Voller claiming the 23-year-old has undergone a medical in north London.

Speaking after the Champions League draw, which saw Leverkusen pitted against Barcelona, Roma and BATE in Group E, Schade admitted that contact had been made with Spurs.

However, a deal remains some way off as the Premier League side look to add attacking reinforcements to a squad that boasts just Harry Kane as an out-and-out striker, with Emmanuel Adebayor having been banished by Mauricio Pochettino.

"Nothing has happened up to now," he said. "There is a contact with England, and we are in discussions, but there hasn't been any final negotiation.

"There is no transfer, and there is also no signature."

He added: "The next days will show, but we will only let Son Heung-min go when we are satisfied with the terms."

Son scored 17 goals in all competitions for Leverkusen last season.

Koeman rues refereeing decisions after Europa League defeat

    ronaldkoeman-cropped_1110gbsb7azhz4fo47bsa54l.jpg

Ronald Koeman was disappointed with the standard of officiating as his Southampton side were knocked out of the Europa League following a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Midtjylland on Thursday.

A first-half goal from Morten Rasmussen was enough to give the Danish side a 1-0 second leg win, ending the Saints' European campaign after only four games.

Koeman, though, was unhappy that a goal was disallowed in the first leg, while an apparent handball from Rasmussen in the area went unpunished in the deciding tie in Denmark.

"We were unlucky because in both games we were the better team. We had the most chances in both games.

"We scored a good goal at home that was not awarded by the referee."

He added: "The handball from the free-kick had an effect on the final result.

"We worked very hard but sometimes you need good and right decisions and we didn't have that."

Rasmussen's well-taken goal came after Jay Rodriguez lost possession near his own penalty area, leading to criticism from Koeman.

"We started very well. We created some good chances in the first 15 minutes," he said.

"Jay lost the ball in a position where he can't lose it. One chance and it's 1-0 - very clinical and good from Midtjylland, but the final result was not what we showed on the pitch."

Juventus increase bid for Schalke starlet Draxler

    julian-draxler-schalke-german-bundesliga-22082015_um0vgtiw1q7t1hds5uyt6iv05.jpg

Juventus have increased their offer for Schalke ace Julian Draxler to an initial €23 million with the promise of a further €6m in bonuses.

The Bianconeri originally went to the Bundesliga outfit with a €20m package for the attacker, who still has three years left on his contract.

However, Schalke rejected the bid, prompting Juve to explore other options, with the Italian champions' general director Beppe Marotta stating: “We've pretty much abandoned negotiations for Draxler for a number of reasons, but we're still looking for someone to play behind the strikers."

The Bianconeri, though, have now returned with an improved offer for Draxler and are now hoping to wrap up a deal before the close of the transfer window on August 31, having already agreed personal terms with the Germany international.

Juve have already significantly revamped their attack over the summer, with the exits of Carlos Tevez, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo having been offset by the arrivals of Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala and Sami Khedira.

However, Bianconeri boss Massimiliano Allegri has made no secret of his desire to land a player capable of playing behind the strikers and Draxler has always been his No.1 target.

The Scudetto holders stepped up their efforts to land a trequartista after suffering a shock loss to Udinese in the opening game of their Serie A title defence last weekend.

'United-Neymar deal not impossible' - Belletti

    neymar-cropped_v9nvjne4qqrv13bzlfuymepz1.jpg

Juliano Belletti feels Barcelona star Neymar is unlikely to leave Camp Nou but acknowledged anything is possible amid rumours of interest from Manchester United.

The Brazil captain was linked with a switch to Old Trafford last week, although both Blaugrana boss Luis Enrique and United counterpart Louis van Gaal refused to comment on the reports.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu also played down talk of a transfer, adding that Neymar is set to enter negotiations over a new deal in the coming months.

Belletti does not believe that his fellow Brazilian has any desire to leave Catalunya but conceded that anything is possible in football.

When asked over whether a United move would appeal to his compatriot, the former Blaugrana defender told Omnisport: "No I don't think so, Neymar is very happy in Barcelona.

"He has adapted to the team, the city and his family have adapted as well but nothing is impossible."

Belletti was speaking after the Champions League draw, as champions Barca were grouped with Bayer Leverkusen, Roma and BATE.

Chelsea - another of his former clubs - will compete against Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

On what the groups could offer his former sides, the one-time European champion added: "It depends on the team.

"Barca and Chelsea are always favourites but that's the Champions League, it's about pressure and for sure they're prepared for any difficulties."

:yes:Van Gaal & Man Utd get Champions League golden ticket...but now the hard work starts

    louisvangaal-cropped_nbr5ho1hrjhv155f3u4uz1sk1.jpg

On Wednesday afternoon Manchester United’s Champions League future was hanging in the balance, with question marks over their direction in the transfer market undermining their desire to progress deep into the competition.

Yet just 24 hours on they were immediately installed as one of the favourites to make it into the Round of 16 after landing one of the luckiest Champions League draws of recent times, even by their standards. United have had easy routes before, but few have been kinder than this one.

They could have drawn Barcelona, Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Monchengladbach. Instead they face PSV, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg. At a time when questions are being asked as to the club’s preparation for the bigger challenges to come, we might have to wait until the Round of 16 before the Red Devils are truly pushed on the European stage.

PSV present a romantic return for Memphis Depay just a matter of months after he left Eindhoven for Old Trafford in a deal worth around £25 million, but a repeat of the Mark van Bommel and Mateja Kezman-inspired 2000 defeat is a hugely unlikely prospect given the fact Dutch football continues to fade in the wider arena.

Perhaps the trickiest aspect of the clashes with CSKA Moscow is the logistically-challenging journey to Russia during the cold autumn and winter months, while Wolfsburg will only present a challenge if Manchester City somehow allow Kevin De Bruyne to slip through their fingers before September 2.

They came up against both CKSA and Wolfsburg in the group stage in 2009-10, but only Besiktas – the remaining team in the group – truly troubled United. And a repeat is likely, with De Bruyne’s likely departure being a huge boost as they come to face the Germans. A team set up to play around a playmaker heading for the exit door will have quite some reorganising to do if they are to cause United any kind of problems.

The bottom line is that Louis van Gaal and United have got out of jail. After a summer in which they have dallied in the transfer market at great cost, spectacularly missing out on Pedro Rodriguez, being so obviously used by Sergio Ramos and being usurped by neighbours City over Nicolas Otamendi, a testing time in the Champions League might well have exposed the three-time European champions’ glass jaw.

But after being handed a relatively simply route past Club Brugge into the group stage, they now have a similarly straightforward path to the post-Christmas phase of the competition. United really have got away with it, and the timing couldn’t have been better.

Rarely have they looked so ill-prepared for a Champions League campaign. Van Gaal admitted when reviewing Wayne Rooney’s hat-trick in Bruges on Wednesday night that his men are still have a lot of work to do to reach the level he wants from them.

"I think Wayne has a very strong mentality and with his level he always shall come back," he told reporters. "He proved that this evening, but also there's still a long way for him and also for Manchester United."

Such a comment should come as no surprise given that just five days from the closure of the transfer window, United have done nothing about addressing the two gaping holes that Van Gaal has spoken of for some time. David De Gea has never looked more desperate to leave, while a pacey attacker is yet to be found after the Pedro affair came to an embarrassing end.

There are arguably big questions elsewhere too with the defence looking low on authority and mobility being in short supply in the midfield, not to mention the potential need for an out-and-out centre forward.

Never did United need a favourable draw more than they do right now. They should still have more than enough to get through Group B and play a part in the round of 16, but quite how they will shape up when they get there is the big question as the transfer deadline looms ever larger.

Their Premier League position come February will doubtless tell us more about United than their Champions League progression, with tougher tasks on the cards at home than abroad.

United’s European prospects over the autumn and winter look bright, but now the focus must fall on whipping the squad into shape before the closure of the window if they are to be anywhere near as successful come the spring.
