Thauvin, Wijnaldum & Mitrovic - even Newcastle are schooling Wenger in the transfer market

    1829832_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has described Arsenal’s start to the season as “very average” and that assessment faces a significant risk of a downgrade to “poor” when they face Newcastle on Saturday.

Already five points off the top of the table after one win, a draw and a defeat in their first three Premier League matches of the season, the pre-season bubble of optimism in north London has already popped.

While total spending by top flight clubs has now risen to more than £700 million this summer, Arsenal account for just £10m of that sum from the arrival of goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Arsenal did not finish 12 points behind champions Chelsea last season only because of their goalkeepers - and supporters are demanding more signings to complete the squad if they are to mount a genuine title challenge this season.

By now the whole football world knows the Gunners need a top class striker, a central midfielder and a centre-back.

While clubs brace themselves for last-minute bids from Arsenal for their players, Saturday lunchtime opponents can be fairly relaxed that their main summer business has long been completed.

On the final day of last season, Newcastle's much-criticised owner Mike Ashley broke his silence and spoke of his ambition to finish in the top eight and win trophies. After years of austerity and treading water in lower mid-table, the 'Cockney Mafia' have finally decided to go for it this summer.

Steve McClaren has returned to Premier League management with a point to prove and the club have backed him with ambitious signings in areas of the squad identified for improvement.

Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksander Mitrovic, Florian Thauvin and Chancel Mbemba have arrived at a combined cost of £50m to give McClaren a far more talented and better balanced starting XI than he inherited.

Newcastle are, of course, operating in a very different market to Arsenal. Nevertheless, their business over the summer is in stark contrast to the all-too-familiar inaction at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger has brought in stellar players in the last two years in Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but one of the major criticisms of the Frenchman has been his dithering in the transfer market since Arsenal last won the title in 2004.

Gary Neville criticised Arsenal’s “naive or arrogant” transfer strategy earlier this week and while Wenger insists he wants only “exceptional” players, he can’t argue that there are not players available that would improve his squad.

Wijnaldum, for example, is a talented attacking midfielder with defensive qualities and Champions League experience, with time on his side to add another strength to his game. He could have provided excellent competition for Francis Coquelin in a defensive midfield role that even Wenger has recognised as crucial to the balance of his side.

Instead, Arsenal are banking on Coquelin’s form and fitness for their title hopes, despite the 24-year-old being on loan at Charlton as recently as December.

In attack, Arsenal have failed to score in five of their last nine league games, but Wenger has been unable to find a top quality forward to spearhead his attack.

There are also several central defenders that would improve Arsenal. Per Mertesacker is a useful player but nowhere near the level of the great Gunners centre-backs of the past.

Calum Chambers and Gabriel are likely to start again in central defence for Arsenal on Saturday with Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny struggling to return in time having both missed Monday night’s goalless draw with Liverpool.

Newcastle will sense their opportunity to pounce, especially after they showed a renewed defensive organisation and spirit in their own 0-0 draw away at Manchester United last weekend.

In Arsenal’s favour is the fact that they have won their last seven matches against Newcastle.

This time, they face a different Newcastle side out to take advantage of Arsenal’s poor start to the campaign and fire another bullet into their title chances.

Manchester City too good to turn down, says Otamendi

    nicolas-otamendi_1kl0c37delnie1qlw9akg7pw02.jpg

New Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi revealed the club made him an offer he could not refuse, stating it was always his dream to play in the Premier League.

The former Valencia defender moved to the Etihad for €45 million last Thursday after a season in which he starred for los Che in their climb back to the Champions League qualification places.

And though he understands his former fans' frustration over the long-running transfer saga in which he forced himself out of the Mestalla outfit, Otamendi believes he made the best decision.

"Since I spoke with Sergio Aguero during the Copa America, the interest from City was always an attractive proposition," the Argentina international told ESPN . "I talked in depth to Manuel Pellegrini and he convinced me.

"The fact that there are other Argentinians there too was a positive element when the time to make a decision came about. They were looking for a central defender with my profile and I found their project to be attractive.

"I had an amazing season with Valencia and I leave a great project that will carry on. We had a fantastic season and I acknowledge that my leaving was complex. As hard as it is, it was always a boyhood dream of mine to play in the Premier League.

"A chance like this doesn’t come around every day, so I had to grab it. I hope we have a good season and do well in the Champions League."

And despite his hefty price tag, Otamendi expressed his confidence he would excel in England: "To be one of the most expensive centre-backs makes one feel proud. On the pitch there is nowhere to hide. When the time comes to play it’s up to me to do my best.

"Football is different in every country. I hope to be able to express myself on the field of play and push myself to the limit in each game.

"I’ve played in Portugal, Brazil and then moved to a competitive league in Spain where it’s difficult to fight against the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid."

The 27-year-old is one of a slew of high-profile signings the Citizens' have secured this summer, including Raheem Sterling, while Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne is on his way .

Chelsea cannot 'click their fingers' and sign Stones, says Martinez

    johnstones-cropped_1ina94hnyg7s41q3pzkkxaap91.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has lashed out at Chelsea for trying to 'click their fingers' and complete the signing of defender John Stones.

Jose Mourinho's side were reported to have offered close to £40million for the England star, who had a transfer request rejected, and Stones now looks likely to stay at Goodison Park despite the Blues' pursuit.

Martinez lauded chairman Bill Kenwright for insisting the player would not be sold and believes it is an indication that the world's elite clubs are not always able sign who they want due to their high budgets.

He said: "It is no good thinking that because you have a Champions League budget you're going to click your fingers and get anything you want because clearly we don't work like that.

"As a club we have the player and we can say we are keeping him. We know the pressure that will bring and that is why the chairman deserves incredible credit.

"Any chairman would look at any financial deal as an opportunity to do things but our chairman has done what any Evertonian would do and made the right decision for the football club, not for the financial aspect.

"Any chairman would put his manager into a big problem if he sold one of the club’s biggest assets at this stage of the window, and that happens. But our chairman has been very clear and very strong.

"In any transfer deal a player can make a decision on whether to accept a deal or stay when two clubs agree. In this situation the two clubs never agreed."

Martinez believes his central-defender needs protection and feels the timing of the proposed transfer - three games into the new Premier League season - is unfair on both the club and player.

"It is a very tough time for him and, as a player, you are a little bit mixed-up," he said.

"John is in the middle of that storm but now it is very clear. John needs protection. Our fans will be the first to make him feel safe and make him feel in the right environment.

"We need to support John more than ever. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions and I don't think it's fair that any player should have to go through that while having to perform.

"The football authorities need to look into it seriously."

Man Utd agree Blackett loan deal with Celtic

    tyler-blackett-manchester-united_hnhxza9msi4p161w7ii9knimx.jpg

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Celtic to send Tyler Blackett to Parkhead on a season-long loan, Goal understands.

Blackett was one of the young players to make his first team breakthrough last season under Louis van Gaal, who holds the 21-year-old in high regard.

The defender made 11 appearances in the Premier League last season, but the Dutchman has now sanctioned the loan deal for Blackett, whose first team opportunities will be limited during the new campaign.

The 21-year-old is now due in Glasgow for a medical ahead of completing the move to the Scottish Premiership champions.

Blackett's arrival at Celtic could pave the way for Virgil can Dijk to leave the club after they failed to qualify for the Champions League, losing a two-legged play-off to Malmo.

Southampton, who themselves crashed out of the Europa League in midweek, maintain an interest in the Dutch centre-back.

Romero yet to prove worth to Man Utd, says Van Gaal

    sergio-romero-manchester-united_1vhvhtwm1vbip1bbbn09d1mcoj.jpg

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is yet to prove he can command the club's No. 1 jersey, according to Louis van Gaal.

The 28-year-old joined the club on a free transfer in July after his contract with Italian side Sampdoria expired, providing competition for Real Madrid target David de Gea, who is sitting out of first-team action.

Romero has conceded just one goal in five outings for his new club - an own goal from Michael Carrick against Club Brugge - yet Van Gaal says he is yet to be fully tested.

"I don't think so," he told reporters when asked if his goalkeeper has proved his worth for the team.

"Until now we don't allow a lot of shots or moments in our 16-metre area. He could not show what he can show, I think, but that is only a compliment for the team."

The Argentina international joined the club just 12 days before the start of the season and was thrust into their league opener against Tottenham without playing a single pre-season fixture.

Van Gaal has admitted they have been forced to rush him into the setup to help him settle into the team.

He said: "He has played a lot of matches in the Argentina team in the Copa America. The difficulty was the co-operation between the new players and him.

"We have had special training sessions with him. Not only with him and the goalkeeping coach [Frans Hoek] but also the players.

"We have given a lot of attention to that and because of that we could overcome that."

Wolfsburg can survive without De Bruyne - Hecking

    kevin-de-bruyne_1ts2xg4bgtecx19xsqrtvqa6lt.jpg

Dieter Hecking is confident Kevin De Bruyne 's departure to Manchester City will not derail Wolfsburg 's Bundesliga title chase.

The attacking midfielder is poised to complete his protracted move back to the Premier League over the weekend, with Wolfsburg confirming on Friday that a transfer was close .

The German side are set to lose another key player in the coming days as Ivan Perisic closes in on a switch to Inter.

Despite the absence of both players, Wolfsburg were able to beat Schalke 3-0 on Friday thanks to goals from Bas Dost, Ricardo Rodriguez and Timm Klose and Hecking believes it shows how potent his side can be.

"I know that I can trust my team," Hecking said. "They don't have to prove anything.

"It's always possible that both De Bruyne and Perisic get injured. Are we supposed to lose without them? This is again a question that answers itself.

"This team is full of professionals and they want to win games, even when one or two players are missing. So they didn't have to make a statement.

"They played better than last week against Koln even though two players were missing, who aren't even gone yet. Both are still part of the team, they were with the team and congratulated the players for a great game.

"I am happy that the team won and that we had a great performance without these two players."

Neymar: I can make history with Barcelona

    neymar-barcelona-camp-nou-2013_1nx4py339pvn91avvuk88iem9y.jpg

Barcelona ace Neymar has said he wants to make history with his side as they look to build on last season's European and domestic treble.

The Catalan side were victorious in La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Champions League last term and aim to become the first team ever to win the latter for a second time in a row.

Neymar, who has been linked with a mega-transfer to Manchester United this summer, has targeted further success in the future and believes he must be fearless in his career.

"I want to make history. Regardless of what I will do, I hope it is a beautiful story with a lot of accomplishments that are not only personal, but also team-oriented as well," the 23-year-old told reporters at Nike's Tech Fleece Jacket launch.

"I don’t know what my biggest fear is. I always try to have no fear. I just try to do the right thing and be happy. Being happy on and off the pitch just happens naturally.

"It’s hard to talk about myself, but I think I´m a happy guy and my biggest passion is being with my family, my son, my friends - the people I love. I also try to always have fun, not only on the pitch, but also off it.

"My parents are my biggest sources of inspiration. They are people who I have always looked up to and have admired for all they’ve taught me. And obviously I´m still learning a lot from them.

"Off the pitch I’m not a guy who keeps thinking about the game 24 hours a day. I dress up and when it’s time to warm up for a game I just go, ask God to bless me and say, ‘let’s go'."

Neymar was instrumental as Barcelona clinched a treble of La Liga, the Champions League and Copa del Rey last term.

The attacker has been deemed fit to play for Barca in their next league game against Malaga, having recovered from the mumps.

Neymar and Busquets return to Barcelona team

    neymar-barcelona_fox8bjr6pnx41x0v0rx6aumpt.jpg

Barcelona received a boost after Neymar and Sergio Busquets were deemed fit enough to be named in their squad to face Malaga on Saturday, although the Catalans face a defensive dilemma.

Brazilian forward Neymar had missed the start of the Catalans' season with a bout of mumps, while Busquets injured his ankle in their 1-0 opening win at Athletic Bilbao last weekend and was substituted as a precaution.

However, the key pair have both been cleared by the club's medical staff to face Malaga, although the groin strain Dani Alves picked up in the same clash with Athletic means he will be sidelined for the visit of Javi Gracia's side.

Adriano and Douglas are also absent which, combined with Gerard Pique's suspension after he was sent off in the Spanish Super Cup defeat to Athletic, leaves Blaugrana coach Luis Enrique short of defensive options.

As a result, Sergi Roberto and Thomas Vermaelen are likely to reprise their roles from last Sunday at right-back and central defence respectively as they take on a side they failed to beat across both games last term.

Soldado delighted with return to form after Tottenham failure

    roberto-soldado-tottenham_1itc7n3zfi4md1owytgm1fw9sr.jpg

New Villarreal hitman Roberto Soldado said his man-of-the-match performance in a 3-1 victory against Espanyol was the perfect illustration of his abilities after his struggles in England.

The former Tottenham striker scored once and assisted twice as he inspired the Yellow Submarines to come back from a goal down to defeat their visitors on Friday.

And Soldado, who went joint-top of Spain's goalscoring charts with his exploits, revealed he had long been seeking to put in a performance of that magnitude and hopes it gets him back in contention for a place in Spain's squad.

"I've been needing a game like that," the 30-year-old, who struggled to live up to expectations during his time at White Hart Lane, told reporters after the match.

"My level in England wasn't good. Let's see if I can continue like this and hopefully in the future I can return to the Span squad, which is what every player wants.

"I still have to work hard to get back to my best. A striker wants to score important goals that help the team. We reacted well to going down and Cedric Bakambu gave us a lot.

"All our matches this season will be very difficult as every team in this league is here because they deserve it. We have to trust in ourselves, prepare well and get into good form."

Soldado returned to Spain with Marcelino's men this summer for €16 million to replace Luciano Vietto upfront.

Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal: Coloccini own goal enough for Gunners after Mitrovic red card

    alex-oxlade-chamberlain-premier-league-newcastle-v-arsenal-290815_ogx2xs16d22k1f3i5xvd1tfnh.jpg

Aleksandar Mitrovic's first-half red card proved costly as Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal at St James' Park.

Booked within seconds of making his debut against Southampton, before earning another rash yellow card against Swansea City, the young striker was given his marching orders after just 16 minutes on Saturday for an apparent stamp on Francis Coquelin.

Arsenal, denied a penalty before Mitrovic's dismissal, initially struggled to make their advantage count, but broke the deadlock early in the second half when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's shot deflected in off Fabricio Coloccini and the far post.

It was only their third top-flight goal of the campaign, and a second to have come courtesy of an opposing player, but it transpired to be the winner.

Late efforts from Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla failed to yield any further goals, which may have provided some concern for Arsene Wenger.

The Arsenal manager had made three changes and opted for Theo Walcott over Giroud up front, despite the Frenchman having scored eight goals in six games against Newcastle, and the visitors started on the front foot.

Arsenal threatened inside the opening two minutes, but Aaron Ramsey overhit his attempted return pass to Oxlade-Chamberlain – in for the injured Mesut Ozil – when Newcastle looked vulnerable.

Tim Krul then had to be alert to snuff out the threat when Walcott looked to nudge the ball past him on the end of Hector Bellerin's cross.

Bellerin took a tumble in the box following clear contact from Florian Thauvin – making his first league start – after 13 minutes, but referee Andre Marriner was unmoved by Arsenal's protests.

The hosts already looked up against it before Mitrovic's match came to a premature end and Arsenal's dominance increased amid a restless atmosphere inside the stadium as the home fans felt a sense of injustice, though replays showed that the Serb's studs did scrape down Coquelin's shin.

As the interval neared, Krul kept out a long-range strike from Alexis Sanchez and then saw Walcott blast the loose ball over the crossbar, but the England forward was offside anyway.

It took just seven minutes of the second half for Arsenal to forge ahead, with Oxlade-Chamberlain's off-target effort finding the far corner via the unfortunate Coloccini and the woodwork.

With Arsenal having taken 19 points from the last 21 available on the road, the size of the challenge facing Newcastle was evident, but Steve McClaren's men stuck manfully to their task.

Wenger's side enjoyed plenty of possession, though rarely opened up their hosts, who showed a level of resolve so sorely missing last season.

Substitute Giroud and Cazorla tested Krul in the final 15 minutes, but Coloccini proved to be the unwilling match-winner as Arsenal made it eight consecutive victories over Newcastle.
