Man Utd may have to keep Wilson - Van Gaal

    jameswilson-cropped_1390sws5onfbd1v9mpy8rlwiqf.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed striker James Wilson is likely to stay Old Trafford for the time being, having initially been set for a loan exit.

The 19-year-old is yet to feature this season and had been pencilled in to join a Championship club on loan in order to aid his development, but a move is yet to materialise despite multiple offers being received.

Van Gaal previously said he wanted Wilson to get more first-team opportunities away from United, however, the recent injury to Wayne Rooney, which left the youngster as the only back-up to Anthony Martial in the forward department, appears to have changed his mind.

"We have to consider that," said the Dutch manager when asked if the striker would now be staying put.

"Can he play like last season without many playing minutes? That is not good for him.

"But, of course, the injuries for Manchester United are above all other interests so we have to consider that again."

Wilson made 13 Premier League appearances for United last season - although only two of those were starts - scoring once against QPR.

Wenger: Cech could be the key factor against Chelsea

    hd-petr-cech-arsenal-premier-league-09082015_me5guj45yxfr1sxydk7yctl39.jpg

Arsene Wenger hopes Petr Cech will play a vital role in securing a victory when Arsenal head to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper spent over a decade with Chelsea, enjoying a successful spell, winning numerous individual and team honours, before making the £10m switch to north London this summer.

Arsenal have struggled to match Chelsea in head to heads in recent years, though the Gunners did manage to topple the champions in the Community Shield, and Wenger believes his new shot-stopper's experience and aura could have a contributing factor to more success.

“You know you have to score the perfect goal in front of him,” the French boss insisted.

“I just want him to focus on this game and not be influenced by the occasion. You can’t go there and wonder if you’re standing in the right goal or not.

"It is always difficult to go back to your club and play but fortunately he has handled that this season. That is why I decided to play him in the Community Shield. It is the first step that is important and he has dealt very well with it.”

Wenger's side have won just four of their last 29 matches against Chelsea in all competitions but the 65-year-old now feels his side have the physicality to handle the opposition.

“That is part of the key of the game,” he said. “Hopefully we will have defensive strength.”

“For us it’s a big game and we know our position at the end of the season will depend on how well we do in the big games.

“I do not think too much about where Chelsea stand in the league at the moment. I focus more on us performing well with full power.”

Kompany ruled out but Aguero back in for West Ham clash

    vincent-kompany-cropped_1qsmxbm1t61oo1gvwcet178hud.jpg

Vincent Kompany has been ruled out of Manchester City's clash with West Ham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Belgium international was forced off during Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Juventus after suffering a calf problem.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini says Kompany will not be fit for the Hammers' visit in the Premier League or the League Cup clash with Sunderland next Tuesday, though he has better news on Sergio Aguero's knee problem.

"Vincent is not fit for the game. [Pablo] Zabaleta, [Gael] Clichy, [Fabian] Delph also," he said. "Samir Nasri had a kick in the last game. He's not 100 per cent for tomorrow.

"It's a calf injury for Kompany - he won't be involved on Tuesday against Sunderland but we'll see if he can face Tottenham.

"Zabaleta needs one more week with the physio before full training. I hope at the end of this month he will be okay.

"Aguero has recovered very well. He is 100 per cent fit for tomorrow."

Given the injury problems suffered by Aguero and Kompany so far this season, Pellegrini has given his full backing to both Wilfried Bony and new signing Nicolas Otamendi to produce the goods for the Premier League leaders.

"I have absolute trust in what Bony can do. I think we have enough options for the striking positions with him, Aguero and [Kelechi] Iheanacho," he said.

"Otamendi has maybe not worked with us as much as we would have liked but he's an experienced player and he will have his chance."

Pellegrini has also hailed the way in which Kevin De Bruyne is adapting to life at the Etihad, claiming he enhances the versatility of his side.

"De Bruyne is adapting quickly to our system. I am very happy with him. Like Raheem Sterling, he's a type of player we didn't have before."

Rooney goal drought not a problem - Van Gaal

    louis-van-gaal-wayne-rooney-manchester-united_nh3bpbkvqpgj1u9k8r6ialaz4.jpg

Louis van Gaal is unconcerned by Wayne Rooney’s Premier League drought with the Manchester United manager, highlighting his impressive strike rate for club and country.

England's top scorer Rooney, 29, has failed to net in his previous 10 league matches but is closing in on the club's all-time record haul of 249 set by club legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

Despite his lacklustre form in front of goal in the league, Rooney hit a hat-trick against Belgian side Club Brugge in a Champions League qualifier and boss Van Gaal believes his history speaks for itself.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s the Premier League or the Champions League," he said. "It does not matter to me who is scoring. But we have to score more. When you are so dominant as we are, in all the matches, we have to win these.

“Rooney has a range of goals, like Juan Mata, Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial, Marouane Fellaini. You can count all the goals he’s made. In my memory Rooney has scored a lot. He’s nearly the record holder in the club. I hope he will beat that record."

Rooney has recovered from his minor injury complaint and is available for selection for Sunday's trip to Southampton but United are preparing for life without defender Luke Shaw after the youngster suffered a horrific double leg break against PSV.

Rodgers boosted as Henderson and Sturridge close in on return

    danielsturridgejordanhenderson-cropped_1sny4nobmyk7s1gyen8fljzg1u.jpg

Brendan Rodgers will assess the fitness of Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge ahead of Liverpool's Premier League clash with Norwich on Sunday.

England midfielder and club captain Henderson has been sidelined since Liverpool's 1-0 win over Bournemouth in the second match of the season, travelling to the United States for treatment on a heel problem.

His international colleague Sturridge concluded an injury-ravaged campaign last season by undergoing hip surgery but the striker return to training this past week has bolstered Rodgers' confidence ahead of the clash.

"Thankfully for us we've got players returning," he said. "The players that we had available and fit were doing the best that they could and we were maximising everything we could out of them.

"We're going to have players coming back that will add to the squad and see us go on a run of games where we can perform well and get the victories.

"[Henderson] knows he needed to get this injury right. We are trying to give our players the best possible opportunity to stay fit.

"It was more in relationship to the nerve, hopefully that will be cleared up. Jordan's impact has grown during my time here and when you miss players of that calibre it's going to have an impact."

On England international Sturridge, Rodgers added: "On his game he's one of the best there is. He can stretch teams, and has wonderful variety in his finishing.

"A player who can get you 25 plus goals in a season is going to be missed."

Mihajlovic: Milan don't deserve to have more than three points

    sinisamihajlovic-cropped_1psp4kt17mb2s1n0rz08szrgaq.jpg

Sinisa Mihajlovic has told his Milan players they do not deserve to have any more than the three points they currently have on the table in Serie A.

Last weekend's derby loss to Inter means the Rossoneri have lost two of their opening three league fixtures ahead of Saturday's clash against Palermo.

Mihajlovic warned his players not to feel sorry for themselves going into the clash, saying they only deserve to have a maximum of two or three points on the board at this stage.

"In Florence we deserved to lose, against Empoli we should not have won but we did and in the derby we didn't get what we felt we had earned with our performance," the head coach said at his pre-match press conference.

"Perhaps we should have drawn with both Empoli and Inter, but then we would only have two points. Everyone expected more from us in this first month, but for the time being we deserve the points we have.

"The statistics never lie. We have had chances to shoot but have chosen other options. We must improve and take advantages of the chances we get better.

"Palermo are a good team, we must repeat the performance we gave against Inter and put all our anger on the pitch. We must continue on this path and play our own game.

"You always feel pressure when you are at Milan, it will always be like this. We must stay calm, knowing that if we play as a team we can get a lot of satisfaction and only think about ourselves."

Mihajlovic confirmed he will be naming the same starting XI that played in the 1-0 loss to Inter, meaning Mario Balotelli will again take his place on the substitutes' bench.

"The same team that played in the derby will start on Saturday," Mihajlovic said.

"I would like to let 25 players play but I can't. I must make decisions, right or wrong. Balotelli has started well - he must do that every time he gets the chance to play.

"Injuries are part of football and I hope Menez can recover, along with [M'Baye} Niang and [Andrea] Bertolacci. Without doubt Menez was one of our best players last season, but I don't want to talk about injured players to find excuses."

    Uefa rejects Croatia's swastika appeal

    swastika-croatia-italy-12062015_15obu2a57p8zu17uas6x17ci9g.jpg

Uefa has upheld its decision to deduct one point from Croatia's Group H Euro 2016 qualification tally for the display of a swastika during a game in June.

The European football governing body punished the side after the fans used a chemical agent to imprint a swastika on the pitch of Split's Poljud stadium before their 1-1 draw with Italy.

The Nazi symbol became visible during the match and Croatia were ordered to play their next two competitive home games behind closed doors and fined €100,000.

"Uefa's appeals body has upheld the decision to dock Croatia one point for racist behaviour at their qualifying Group H game against Italy," the Uefa statement read on Friday.

"The appeal by Croatia's football federation (HNS) was rejected."

The decision means Croatia are third in Group H on 14 points from eight games, four behind leaders Italy and two adrift of second-placed Norway.Should they finish third following the completion of the remaining two games then they could still reach France via the play-offs.
