:shocked:Manchester City 1-2 West Ham: De Bruyne strike not enough as Hammers shock league leaders

1949522_heroa.jpg

League leaders Manchester City were beaten for the first time this season as West Ham United collected another major Premier League scalp with a stunning 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Slaven Bilic's team returned with three-point hauls from their opening two away matches at Arsenal and Liverpool and they continued a remarkable run on their travels by halting City's 100 per cent record.

Victor Moses netted a sublime early opener and Diafra Sakho doubled the lead – as he did when West Ham beat the same opponents at Upton Park last season.

Record signing Kevin De Bruyne marked his first start for City with a fine finish on the stroke of half-time but there was no further way through for Manuel Pellegrini's men as away goalkeeper Adrian and some desperate defending repelled persistent second-half pressure.

The victory moves West Ham up to second place, three points behind their beaten opponents at the summit.

Nicolas Otamendi made his full City debut alongside De Bruyne, while an injury to David Silva in the warm-up meant Jesus Navas was restored to the starting XI.

Adrian returned from suspension in goal as one of three changes for West Ham, with Pedro Obiang and Carl Jenkinson replacing Cheikhou Kouyate and Angelo Ogbonna.

The visiting keeper was forced into early action as Fernandinho met De Bruyne's right-wing corner with a powerful header but West Ham stunned the Etihad Stadium by taking a sixth-minute lead.

Dimitri Payet fed Moses who advanced before unleashing a brilliant low drive into Joe Hart's bottom-left corner from 25 yards.

That was the first Premier League goal City had conceded for 572 minutes and they were almost gifted an instant response – Aaron Cresswell's header catching out Adrian, who had strayed from his area, but Sergio Aguero was unable to finish.

West Ham were not content to sit on their lead and it was 2-0 in the 31st minute, the hosts defending sluggishly as Obiang met a corner and Sakho scrambled home.

City might have entered the dressing room in further disarray but for a last-ditch challenge from Eliaquim Mangala which denied Sakho and they reduced the arrears in first-half stoppage time.

Aguero, who endured a frustrating 45 minutes in front of goal, set up De Bruyne to send a crisp, low strike beyond Adrian from the edge of the box.

Pellegrini made a defensive switch at the interval, with Martin Demichelis replacing Mangala, and Yaya Toure fired an early second-half warning in West Ham’s direction by fizzing an angled shot wide.

Adrian reacted superbly as Winston Reid almost turned a Navas cross into his own net before Toure had a venomous strike blocked and a bustling run into the box curtailed by the goalkeeper.

On an increasingly rare West Ham foray forward, Sakho rounded Hart but could not finish, while Toure continued his one-man quest for an equaliser by blasting across the face of goal in the 65th minute.

A close-range stop from Navas added to Adrian’s impressive body of work before Reid turned another Toure shot behind.

The Spanish goalkeeper saved his best moment until five minutes from time – an exquisite reaction stop keeping out an Otamendi header from De Bruyne’s corner – and he deservedly led the celebrations at the whistle as City’s club record run of 11 consecutive league wins came to an end.

Simeone: Correa changed the game for Atletico

    angel-correa-eibar-atletico-madrid-la-liga_1wcyfnfigz5ga14ywklrnrhv42.jpg

Diego Simeone was delighted with Atletico Madrid as they beat Eibar 2-0 on Saturday, and insisted the introduction of Angel Correa changed the course of the game for his side.

The 20-year-old came off the bench to net the opening goal in the second half before setting up Fernando Torres to seal the points.

And Simeone said he felt his side were always in control of the game, but said the alterations he made were decisive.

"In the first half we had three clear chances, but we could not score," he told reporters. "After the break we put on people who could break forward.

"Oliver Torres gave us more control of the ball and Correa more in attack. These players are great for that. Eibar spent more time in their box than ours.

"Correa is a dominating player and he's a goalscorer. He entered the game in an important minute - the team needed some individual skill against opponents that defended well.

"The changes worked well for us."

Mihajlovic: This is a new AC Milan

    mihajlovic-milan-serie-a_vbkw8h6rqf5g1sq48y3a2uizr.jpg

Sinisa Mihajlovic is delighted with the progress AC Milan have made this season, insisting they have morphed into a new team over the past few weeks.

The Rossoneri beat Palermo 3-2 on Saturday, thanks to two Carlos Bacca goals and a strike from Giacomo Bonaventura to cancel out an Oscar Hiljemark double.

While Mihajlovic believes his side still need to improve, but is happy with how things are going after they picked up a second league win of the season.

"When you concede a goal there is always something wrong," he told Mediaset. "We need to improve and push on the accelerator. We always have to play in attack.

"I am satisfied by the result, and partly happy with the game. This is a different Milan than that of the first game. President Silvio Berlusconi is happy and gave us compliments, he saw another Milan.

"The team played well, we created a lot even though we lacked a bit of malice. It takes time, but the results give us confidence."

Smalling: Van Gaal has improved me

    louisvangaalchrissmalling-cropped_geo3272yufwd1lbktj0ysitht.jpg

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has credited manager Louis van Gaal for his consistent performances.

After years of promise, Smalling is finally fulfilling his potential under the guidance of Van Gaal, with the 25-year-old yet to miss a match for United in eight matches across the Premier League and Champions League.

Smalling, who has captained United in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick this season, has arguably been the team's best player in 2015-16.The former Fulham centre-back believes he is benefiting from Van Gaal and the Dutchman's training methods in an interview with Sky Sports.

"I think he [Van Gaal] has [improved me], all the coaches I've worked with, especially Louis van Gaal, have helped me," Smalling said ahead of Sunday's trip to Southampton.

"We work hard and tirelessly on the training ground with our tactics, we do 11 versus 11's a lot so we know our positions and our roles down to a tee.

"The repetition has really improved my game and a lot of the other players as well.
"The manager said at the start of the season that once you've been with him for six months and got used to the repetition of drills, the tactics and you know your role that we will get better."There has obviously been a lot of ins and outs and, as a group, we've stayed very close-knit.

"Whoever comes in knows their job. We have the training routine and the philosophy of the manager so every player knows what he wants and what he expects of you on the pitch."It's very clear to us as players what we need to be done come matchday. We started this season a lot better than we did last season and we can see an improvement."

Smalling, who suffered thigh and groin injuries last season, added: "It's nice to know the manager has got that trust in me and I hope to deliver."I've really enjoyed it. Considering how last season started, when I was stop-start and didn't pick up until November where I got a consistent run of games.

"So to be able to start with a clean bill of health and to have the manager's faith has given me the confidence to kick on and make sure I have a full season and justify my place."

AC Milan on the right track - Bacca

    carlos-bacca-ac-milan_ygphan094dnv1mw7f7g2157qj.jpg

Carlos Bacca believes AC Milan "are on the right track" as they look to return to the pinnacle of Italian football.

The striker netted two to give his side three points in a 3-2 win over Palermo on Saturday, securing their second league win of the season.

And Bacca believes the Rossoneri are improving this season and believes they can reach their goal of qualifying for European football next term.

"We are on the right track," he told reporters. "Palermo have played like a great team and they have great players like Franco Vazquez and Alberti Gilardino.

"Winning in Serie A is never easy, so we are happy.

"We are working hard and we can still improve, but we are a united group and we want to get to the top.

"The common goal is to reach Europe, we must bring Milan back."

"My best goal of the game was the second, my header, because it gave us the victory."

    Pellegrini 'never believed' title talk

    manuelpellegrini-cropped_1ldat815ilamt14hs19sfnx54b.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini is adamant his Manchester City players are taking no notice of the notion they will romp to the Premier League title after West Ham ended their 100 per cent start on Saturday.

City began the day four points clear at the top of the table after just five games and 11 clear of champions Chelsea, who Pellegrini's men defeated 3-0 last month.

But victory for Chelsea over Arsenal and West Ham's 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium provided a reality check at the end of a week in which Juventus also won by the same scoreline at City in the Champions League.

"We never believed that [City were running away with the league]," insisted the Chilean manager.

"We just focus on the next game. This was a very difficult week, starting in the Champions League and after that losing again [against West Ham]."We never believed that because we won five games that we are the champions of the Premier League.

"We have to play 32 games more, 96 points, so no one can believe that."Victory completed an impressive hat-trick of away league wins this season for West Ham, who are now second, following triumphs at Arsenal and Liverpool.

Pellegrini added: "It was frustrating because I think it was three very important points here at home."We said before the game that we would play against a difficult team that won their previous two away games.

"We conceded two easy goals that allowed them to be in front. That maybe was one of the reasons why we didn't win."

Manchester City starlet Iheanacho in showboat fail

    1910502_heroa.jpg

Making a name for yourself in the Premier League is a tough task for any player, but Kelechi Iheanacho has done well to stand out at Manchester City since joining the first-team squad.

Goals in pre-season saw Manuel Pellegrini include him in the Premier League for the first time this term and the 18-year-old netted his first competitive goal to beat a resilient Crystal Palace in injury time last week.

However, Iheanacho proved he isn't quite the finished article with a showboating mishap ahead of Saturday's loss to West Ham... booting the ball directly into his face own. Ouch.

Luckily for us, and not for Kelechi, Goal's City correspondent Sam Lee caught the moment on camera.

Arsenal paid price for Gabriel red card - Ramsey

    aaron-ramsey-arsenal-29082015_1d0suel1tz61b1afd85hvjiqp3.jpg

Aaron Ramsey admitted Arsenal paid the price for Gabriel Paulista's dismissal in Saturday's Premier League loss at Chelsea.

The game at Stamford Bridge was scoreless when Gabriel saw red for kicking out at Diego Costa in the closing stages of the first half and the hosts wasted little time in making their numerical advantage count, with Kurt Zouma heading them into the lead eight minutes after the interval.

Arsenal were reduced to nine men when Santi Cazorla was dismissed with 11 minutes to go and Eden Hazard sealed a first home win of the season for Chelsea - and arrested a run of three straight Premier League defeats in the process - when his injury-time effort was deflected home by Calum Chambers.

Ramsey says Arsene Wenger's men are now desperate to bounce back in Wednesday's north London derby, with the defeat at Chelsea having been preceded by a shock Champions League loss at Dinamo Zagreb.

"We felt quite comfortable out there [until the first red card]," the Wales international told Arsenal Player. "[Chelsea] haven’t had the best of runs of late and the more the game went on, the more the crowd would have started to turn and moan a bit.

"But it’s hard when you go down to 10 men. That set-piece has cost us but we tried our best out there and we paid the price from the sending off in the end.

"We’re just disappointed because we had a bad result in midweek in the Champions League.

"We wanted to get back to winning ways and have a positive game. We were doing that up until the sending-off.

"I’m sure he’ll learn from that and we have to move on and put things right on Wednesday.

"It’s not good enough for a club like Arsenal to lose two games in a row. Hopefully now we can put things right on Wednesday.

"It will be a feisty game with hopefully some goals in our favour."
