Newcastle 2-2 Chelsea: Mourinho's men battle back to salvage draw

    1985812_heroa.jpg

A late comeback spared Jose Mourinho's blushes as Chelsea denied Steve McClaren his first Premier League win in charge of Newcastle United after coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Goals from Ramires and Willian earned the champions a share of the spoils at St James's Park on Saturday after it appeared Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum had secured the points for Newcastle.

Chelsea entered the game on the back of off-field issues, with club doctor Eva Carneiro's controversial departure coming in a week when Diego Costa was retrospectively given a three-match ban for violent conduct in last Saturday's win over Arsenal.

And Jose Mourinho's issues grew as Newcastle enjoyed the better of the first half, deservedly heading to the break ahead thanks to Perez's fine strike.

Chelsea responded impressively after half-time, only to be hit by a sucker punch when Wijnaldum nodded home a second.

But the visitors showed their resolve thereafter, with Ramires' wonder strike and Willian's fortuitous goal ensuring they left the north-east with a point.

McClaren opted to immediately recall striker Aleksandar Mitrovic following a three-game ban, with Chelsea starting Loic Remy in place of the suspended Costa.

The latter offered the first threat, Remy poking just wide after being found by Branislav Ivanovic.

Newcastle then came into the game, Mitrovic heading just wide from Wijnaldum's cross. That set the tone for a good spell as Moussa Sissoko hammered narrowly wide from 20 yards.

The hosts continued to look dangerous, with Chelsea thankful for two good saves from Asmir Begovic in quick succession. He first denied Perez from close range, before repeating the trick after Daryl Janmaat stretched to fire at goal.

Chelsea threatened an opener themselves soon after, Cesc Fabregas unleashing a powerful 25-yard strike that forced a fine stop from Tim Krul.

And Krul's intervention looked all the more important when Newcastle took a deserved 42nd-minute lead through Perez.

The forward controlled a Vurnon Anita cross after Kurt Zouma inexplicably let the ball drop before unleashing a fizzing volley which flew in off the post.

Chelsea produced the expected riposte after the interval and almost levelled when Remy headed Oscar's cross just wide but they failed to make the most of their dominance and Newcastle capitalised.

Perez sent in a threatening corner and Wijnaldum, profiting from being completely unmarked, glanced a header into the bottom corner.

Chelsea were given a route back into the game thanks to a stunning Ramires goal, the Brazilian's rasping 25-yard drive flying into the top corner with 14 minutes to go.

They should have equalised in the 83rd minute as Fabregas' stunning long ball found Pedro, who hit over when one-on-one with Krul.

An equaliser came three minutes later, however, as Willian's free-kick evaded everybody and flew into the net.

Roma 5-1 Carpi: Garcia's five-star men leave new boys winless

    mohamed-salah-and-miralem-pjanic-roma-cropped_16r3sghyugwji1gt9ca2opxe38.jpg

Roma made light work of Carpi at the Stadio Olimpico, returning to winning ways in Serie A with a 5-1 victory over the struggling visitors.

Rudi Garcia's men scored three goals in seven minutes to storm into a three-goal lead by the half-hour mark, with Kostas Manolas, Miralem Pjanic and Gervinho all finding the target.

Carpi pulled one back before the break through former Roma man Marco Borriello, but goals from Mohamed Salah and Lucas Digne saw the hosts gain an unassailable lead.

Both sides had opportunities to net the game's seventh goal, but Gervinho hit the woodwork before Morgan De Sanctis denied Ryder Matos from the spot in the closing stages, leaving the visitors without a top-flight win this season.

It was Carpi who forged the first chance of the game, but after Borriello danced his way into the box he was denied at the near post by a fingertip save from De Sanctis.

It proved costly for the visitors, who found themselves behind in the 24th minute as Manolas tucked home his first goal for the club following a wayward shot from Digne.

By the 31st minute Garcia's men had added a further two to their tally.

Pjanic's wonderfully executed 20-yard free kick dumbfounded Zeljko Brkic before Gervinho volleyed home after the keeper could only parry a shot from Maicon straight to him.

Borriello reduced the deficit ahead of the interval, but six minutes after the restart the hosts restored their three-goal cushion when Salah added the finishing touch after Francesco Totti had been denied by Brkic on the counter-attack.

There could have been a second for Borriello but he fired wide after pouncing on a loose touch from Radja Nainggolan in the box and Digne quickly grabbed Roma's fifth, opening his account for the club as he headed home at the back post following a cross from Maicon with 68 minutes on the clock.

Only the post stopped Gervinho from extending the hosts' advantage, but a foul from Maicon gifted Carpi another chance to reduce the deficit with 15 minutes remaining.

However, Matos was denied from the spot by De Sanctis, who showed agility belying his years to get up and keep out the Brazilian's follow-up effort as well.

Victory sends Roma, temporarily at least, up to third position in the table, while Carpi continue to languish in the relegation zone with just two points from their opening six fixtures.

Mourinho slams Chelsea stars: They were -1 out of 10

    1986012_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has slammed his Chelsea players for their first-half display against Newcastle United by rating their performance as ‘minus one out of 10’.

Ayoze Perez opened the scoring for Steve McClaren’s side before Georginio Wijnaldum doubled the hosts’ lead, but the Premier League champions rescued a point with late goals from Ramires and Willian.

"In the first half, from 0 to 10, [Chelsea were] -1. It was that bad,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“In the second half we played very well. Ramires and Willian moved the game. They brought more intensity, midfield pressing, more recovery, much more dynamic arriving in dangerous positions. An intensity Newcastle couldn't cope with.

"The second half was really good. I'm very happy with the second half, really disappointed with the first half. And I have to try to understand why one team can play so bad in one half and so well in another one. In every aspect in the first half we were bad. Poor individual performances, too many. As a consequence of that it's impossible for a team to be a good, competitive team.”

Loic Remy started in attack in the absence of Diego Costa, who is serving a three-game ban, and Mourinho admits his side missed the Spaniard’s presence.

"Of course [Chelsea missed Costa]. The decision to suspend him, everybody knows that we lose potential when we don't have him,” said the Chelsea manager.

“So great decision. I have to believe so, it's difficult to say. It's not fair to say. I just say that he's a very important player for us."

:DVan Gaal: Rooney? Memphis? De Gea?! I don't care who scores!

Louis van Gaal says it is not important who scores for Manchester United after watching Wayne Rooney end his goal drought as the Red Devils beat Sunderland 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The England captain scored his first Premier League goal in 12 games in a comfortable victory that took the hosts to the top of the Premier League table with Memphis Depay and Juan Mata also on target.

Next up for United is the visit of Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Wednesday and Van Gaal says while goals are important to the players, he is only interested in outscoring the opposition.

"It doesn't make any difference who scores for me and for the team. You have to score one goal more than the opponent,” he told reporters.

“Of course, personally for [Wayne] Rooney or [Anthony] Martial or [Memphis] Depay it's important. And as a coach I'm happy that Rooney and Depay have now scored.

“But with Martial I am happy that he forms an attacking point, that he is always making runs and runs to the first post. But he can be better and other players can be better.

“That's why I don't want to say too much about individual performances. When I say what a player can improve it is in the press and you don't know what is happening with all your remarks.

"You know as a journalist also that he [Rooney] shall score.

“What I say on Friday is also the same now. He did it, but it could also be against Wolfsburg. But for me when we beat Wolfsburg and [David] de Gea scores the goal I am also happy!"

Barcelona players must step up & cover Messi - Luis Enrique

    lionel-messi-injury-barcelona-las-palmas-la-liga-26092015_dw0dxbr3787k1uqqxddv16irf.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has insisted that Lionel Messi's absence through injury will not have any effect on his side's style of play, though he has called on the rest of his squad to raise their game.

Messi damaged the internal collateral ligament in his left knee early on in Barca's 2-1 La Liga win over Las Palmas on Saturday, and is expected to be out for up to two months.

Nevertheless, Luis Enrique is confident Barca can cope without their star man and has urged his other players to step up their game.

"The fact that Messi is injured does not mean we will change our style of play," he said at his post-match press conference.

"It is always sad when a player gets injured. But we all know how much Messi means for this team.

"Messi decides a lot of games, but it is now up to the team to step it up a notch.

"Could he be back for the Clasico [on November 21]? We are not thinking about that yet. We are focusing on our next game against Bayer Leverkusen."

Defender Marc Bartra, meanwhile, has acknowledged that Messi's injury comes as a huge blow to the team.

"Messi's injury is very sad for him and for the team. He is our best player," the centre-back told reporters.

"But we have to get through this. The win over Las Palmas was a good start."

Barcelona 2-1 Las Palmas: Messi injury overshadows Suarez double

    1984532_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez's double helped Barcelona to a 2-1 win over Las Palmas in Saturday's La Liga encounter at Camp Nou as Lionel Messi limped off with a knee injury.

The home side were dealt an early blow when Messi was forced to leave the pitch in the 10th minute, however Suarez gave them reasons to celebrate midway thought the half when he headed home a cross from Sergi Roberto.

Las Palmas looked dangerous a number of times via former Barcelona B striker Sergio Araujo, but the Argentine was unfortunate not to add his name to the scoresheet.

And Suarez made it two after the break following some fine work from Munir, before Neymar blasted a penalty over the crossbar.

Jonathan Viera's deflected effort put Barca under late pressure, but they held firm to provide a good response to Wednesday's 4-1 hammering at Celta Vigo.

Barcelona looked like opening the scoring after just four minutes of play when Messi's sublime first touch sent him clear, but a last-ditch tackle from Pedro Bigas was just enough to keep the Argentine's attempt out.<

There was more bad news for the Catalans shortly after as Messi was forced to leave the pitch with an injury to his left knee following Bigas' tackle.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen was called into action in the 20th minute after Araujo gained a yard on Gerard Pique before trying his luck from inside the area, but the Barca goalkeeper did well to save at his near post.

The hosts took the lead in the 25th minute after a superb attack down the right allowed Roberto swing in a dangerous cross for Suarez and the Uruguay international beat his marker to the ball, heading home to make it 1-0.

Barcelona should have doubled their lead shortly after when Suarez and Neymar charged toward the visitors' goal, but the former Liverpool man's pass toward the Brazilian lacked accuracy and Bigas got back in time to clear the danger.

Las Palmas looked dangerous on the counterattack, though, and once more threatened 10 minutes before the break. Viera unleashed a stunning long-range striker after cutting inside from the left, only for Ter Stegen to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Luis Enrique's men continued to charge forward in search for a second goal after the break and were rewarded for their positive approach in the 54th minute. Munir sent in a fine low cross from the right toward Sergio Busquets, who dummied it to allow Suarez to slam into the top corner.

Araujo again looked dangerous for the away side just minutes later, but his powerful left-footed strike was palmed away by Ter Stegen.

Neymar seemed desperate to add his name to the score sheet, but the Brazilian was denied by Javi Varas after escaping the offside trap before blazing over from the spot after Antolin Alcaraz handled the ball inside his own area.

Sloppy play from Javier Mascherano in the closing stages of the encounter then allowed Nabil El Zhar to set up Viera and the 25-year-old saw his deflected shot beat Ter Stegen, but it was too little too late.

Villarreal 1-0 Atletico Madrid: Baptistao downs Simeone's side

    1987182_heroa.jpg

Leo Baptistao's early strike against his parent club was enough to clinch Villarreal a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday as Marcelino's side made it five La Liga wins on the spin.

Like Atletico, Villarreal have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, but it was the hosts who delivered another polished display at the Estadio El Madrigal to move above champions Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Villarreal - who remain unbeaten in the league this season - led 14 minutes in courtesy of on-loan Baptistao, who linked well with the returning Roberto Soldado to register his third goal of the campaign.

Jackson Martinez was handed another opportunity to impress as part of Diego Simeone's much-discussed rotation policy, but was withdrawn at half-time for Fernando Torres as Atletico stuttered in front of goal.

The visitors created chances and improved after the interval, but were unable to break down a resolute Villarreal defence as they drew a blank for the first time this season.

A second defeat of the campaign will add to Simeone's frustrations, while Villarreal's early momentum shows little sign of abating.

Amid an even opening, the hosts maintained their goalscoring form at Madrigal as Baptistao collected a pass from Soldado and swept the ball past Jan Oblak.

The slick move and finish paved the way for further Villarreal pressure, with Soldado forcing Oblak into a save from a tight angle soon after.

Martinez was denied an effort on target under pressure from Eric Bailly as Atleti enjoyed a rare foray forward early before the half-hour mark.

However, the hosts enjoyed the better of the first half, soaking up what Atletico had to offer and almost doubling their lead when Samu Castillejo sent a stooping header narrowly past Oblak's left-hand post.

A missed header from Victor Ruiz allowed Antoine Griezmann in on goal on the stroke of half-time, but Alphonse Areola was equal to it.

While Marcelino withdrew Baptistao at the break, opposite number Simeone introduced both Torres and Luciano Vietto in a bid to gain attacking momentum.

Former Chelsea striker Torres was quickly in the thick of things, hooking an effort at goal that was well kept out by Areola, while Baptistao's replacement Matias Nahuel saw a poor first touch rob him of a chance to shoot at goal when clean through at the other end.

Smart defending denied Oliver Torres after a quick Atleti free-kick, with Filipe Luis' wayward cross, following good work from Griezmann, summing up the visitors' difficult evening going forward.

While Atleti asked questions late on - substitute Angel Correa's shot well saved by Areola - the hosts saw out the victory with relative comfort, leaving Simeone with plenty to ponder in attack.

Napoli 2-1 Juventus: Champions beaten again as Insigne and Higuain combine

    1987872_heroa.jpg

Juventus’ dreadful start to their Serie A title defence continued as Gonzalo Higuain inspired Napoli to a 2-1 victory at the Stadio San Paolo on Saturday.
After providing the assist for Lorenzo Insigne's first-half opener, Higuain – who was left out of Gerardo Martino's latest Argentina squad – scored the second for Maurizio Sarri's men shortly after the hour mark.

Insigne fired Napoli ahead with his third Serie A goal of the season 26 minutes in, following a frantic start to proceedings that saw Pepe Reina make an excellent save to deny Simone Zaza.

Giorgio Chiellini should have headed Juve level just after the restart and the Serie A champions were made to pay for sloppy play from Hernanes when Higuain stole in to net his fifth league goal of 2015-16.

Mario Lemina opened his Juve account, but Massimiliano Allegri's side were unable to find an equaliser, with substitute Alvaro Morata going closest.

The defeat is Juve's third in their opening six games and they could be 13 points adrift of league leaders Inter should Roberto Mancini's side beat Fiorentina on Sunday.

Allegri demanded a response from Juve following their 1-1 draw with Serie A debutants Frosinone in midweek, but it was Napoli who started the stronger – with Higuain blazing over before Marek Hamsik forced Gianluigi Buffon into action.

Napoli, who failed to score in a league game for the first time in 14 Serie A fixtures when they drew 0-0 with Carpi last time out, continued to press, but it was Juve who went close next, Reina doing well to get down low to his right and parry away Zaza's strike.

But the hosts maintained their control, and took a deserved lead when Insigne linked up with Higuain before drilling a low finish beyond Buffon from the edge of the area.

However, the diminutive winger's night was cut short prior to the interval, an apparent knee injury forcing Sarri to introduce Dries Mertens in his place.

And the Belgium winger almost had an immediate impact when he burst in behind Juve's defence, but he elected to shoot rather than play in the unmarked Jose Callejon, and his effort sailed wide.

Reina would have been helpless to prevent Chiellini equalising after the interval had the Italy defender managed to direct his header on target from Paulo Dybala's free-kick.

After seeing an effort well saved by Buffon, Higuain had the goal his performance deserved in the 62nd minute, firing home from an acute angle after dispossessing Hernanes.

But Juve responded immediately, Lemina, on loan from Marseille, tucking home after latching onto Dybala's cross at the back post.

Morata replaced Dybala with 20 minutes remaining and the Spain striker was just inches away from restoring parity with a venomous effort from 18-yards out, but Juve slipped to another crushing setback.

Guardiola delighted to see off tricky Mainz test

    pepguardiola-cropped_pkc5ylcdgc5s1tx0aspftk7as.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola praised the Bundesliga champions' all-round display after maintaining their 100 per cent start to the league season with Saturday's 3-0 victory over Mainz.

Guardiola's team have now equalled the record for the best start to a Bundesliga season with a seventh straight win, as in-form Robert Lewandowski scored twice along with Kingsley Coman.

The visitors were made to wait until six minutes into the second half before Lewandowski opened the scoring as Martin Schmidt's side made life difficult at the Coface Arena.

However, a delighted Guardiola told reporters: "It was pretty difficult here, Mainz are a very physical and dynamic team.

"We have played well for 85 minutes - the first five minutes of the second half we were still in the dressing room.

"But today I am very, very happy, because I know how hard it is to win in Mainz.

"We have controlled the game well, created a few chances and a few counter-attacks. It's three more points and now we must think about the next match."
