Aguero bags fastest five-goal haul in Premier League history

    2022302_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero has made Premier League history after scoring five goals in 20 minutes during Manchester City's 6-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Argentine netted the English top-flight's fastest-ever quintuple, besting Jermain Defoe - who netted five in Tottenham's 9-1 win over Wigan Athletic in 2009 - by 16 minutes.

Aguero's first goal levelled the score at 1-1 in the 42nd minute, with his fifth coming in the 62nd minute to round off the rout.

The only other players to hit five goals in a single match are Alan Shearer for Newcastle, and Andy Cole and Dimitar Berbatov for Manchester United, with the former netting his tally in 54 minutes, and the latter pair both scoring their goals in 68 minutes.

    Advocaat: I might get sacked

    dickadvocaat-cropped_sd0co75zey371s62yk9zxuw62.jpg

Sunderland head coach Dick Advocaat refused to answer questions about his future after Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Ham.

Advocaat saw his side let a two-goal lead slip and go down to 10 men after Jeremain Lens was sent off as the Hammers denied them their first Premier League win of the season.

Speculation about Advocaat's future had been rife before the game, but he would not be drawn on the matter, telling Sky Sports: "I don't want to give an answer on that. I cannot say I will be the manager for the next game."

The match looked set to be a bright spot in a dark season for Sunderland after Steven Fletcher put them 1-0 up and Lens added a superb second, but West Ham fought back with goals from Carl Jenkinson and Dimitri Payet, either side of Lens' red card.

Advocaat said: "The game was in the balance and the moment with Lens and the red card was a difficult moment.

"The way the team kept going, the work they put in, I was very pleased with them.

"I know what’s going on here and I know the team. We have a team who always work hard and sometimes I cannot do what I want, because they are good guys.

"They showed what they can do and it’s good for the future of the club. I'm very happy with the way we played. We had to fight to keep the one point."

Pressed on his own future, he added: "There can be rumours. What is more important is the way the team played.

"I don't want to discuss my future. You'll hear one way or the other. Let's wait and see."

Luis Enrique: It's incredible we only scored once

    2022962_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said it was "incredible" his side only scored once after they slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Michael Krohn-Dehli and Vicente Iborra were enough for the hosts to see off the Spanish champions, who pulled one back via Neymar's penalty.

The Catalans hit the woodwork three times as they went in search of an equaliser, with Enrique admitting luck just wasn't on their side.

"We can only congratulate Sevilla for the win and for their game," he told reporters after the match.

"Both teams had many chances. It's almost incredible we only scored one in this game. Sevilla enjoyed a great 10-minute spell.

"You can never be happy when you lose."

Barcelona had to make do without Lionel Messi and captain Andres Iniesta for the encounter, but Gerard Pique has called for his side not to make excuses and focus on getting back to winning ways instead.

"After the international break, we must start winning and cannot afford more setbacks. Barcelona have to be at the top," the Spain international said.

"Of course we miss Messi and Iniesta, but Sevilla also have injuries so that cannot be an excuse.

"The ball didn't want to go in today. They got through twice and scored, we paid for that."

The defeat at Sanchez Pijuan is Barcelona's second defeat in three league outings, although Luis Suarez believes the latest loss differed greatly from their 4-1 collapse at Celta Vigo last Wednesday.

"Against Celta we didn't play well, but today we feel like we did everything we could," the striker said. "We deserved at least one point."

The Blaugrana next host Rayo when La Liga resumes on October 17.

Pellegrini reveals half-time injury worry for star man Aguero

    sergioaguero-cropped_11hafzgpaxzjl1jnapyr6hl9ot.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini revealed that Sergio Aguero required half-time treatment to his hamstring before he stunningly put Newcastle to the sword.

The Argentina international headed City level after Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring for the visitors at Etihad Stadium, but went to the dressing room in pain having picked up a knock.

Pellegrini said Aguero had already been nursing an injury from the 2-1 midweek win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League, where he scored a last-minute winner from the penalty spot.

But the 27-year-old put his ailments to one side to complete a remarkable five-goal haul by the 62nd minute – the fifth player to achieve the feat in the Premier League era.

"Maybe it was very good treatment," Pellegrini joked in his post-match press conference when discussing the decision to substitute Aguero midway through the second half.

"He had a kick to his hamstring so it was important just to relax him a little bit because he was not 100 per cent comfortable.

"We don't know if he could have scored more goals, but we know he took a bad kick from Wednesday in Germany."

Aguero won the Golden Boot in the Premier League last season, but had struggled to find his best form this season until his latest exploits.

His previous goal from open play came in City's second match of the season against Chelsea and Pellegrini was delighted to see his star forward back to his imperious best.

"I am very happy for Kun because he deserves it," added the Chilean. "He is always the player that makes the difference but for different reasons.

"In the last game he missed important chance but he was calm and that was very clever for him to be calm.

"To see him play at the level he plays, it is not just me who must be happy. I think that all the fans [are happy] because really he is a different player.

"Kun is always calm but I think he was very, very happy. He is a scoring player and he wants to be the top scoring player – he was not scoring the amount of goals that he normally does.

"He was very happy and I hope that he will continue in the same way."

:shocked:Chelsea 1-3 Southampton: Shambolic Blues fall to another defeat

    2023492_heroa.jpg

Chelsea's miserable 2015-16 season continued as they fell to a stunning 3-1 defeat against a rampant Southampton side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead through Willian's free-kick, but Steven Davis deservedly levelled proceedings just before half-time.

Chelsea thought they should have had a penalty when Radamel Falcao was brought down by Maarten Stekelenburg in the second half shortly before Sadio Mane put the Saints in front after a mistake from the returning John Terry. Graziano Pelle then sealed a victory which piles further pressure on manager Jose Mourinho.

The champions have now taken just eight points from as many matches after conceding three times in a home league game for the first time ever under the Portuguese boss, while Southampton have won three consecutive games and scored 12 goals in the process.

Mourinho had said before the match he would continue to rotate his side as he searches for a winning formula and he did exactly that with four changes as Falcao, Eden Hazard, Oscar and captain Terry were selected.

Former Blues midfielder Oriol Romeu started in place of James Ward-Prowse in the only alteration made by Ronald Koeman.

Chelsea took the lead in the 10th minute after Romeu had been booked for a foul on Hazard out wide.

Willian stepped up and his 30-yard delivery found the far corner after bouncing off the post. It was unclear if the attempt was deliberate, but the Brazilian celebrated scoring for the fourth game in a row.

Virgil van Dijk's penalty appeal was turned down after Branislav Ivanovic had a hold on his shirt at a corner, before Davis lashed an effort wide as Southampton attempted to respond.

At the other end, Stekelenburg saved Oscar's curling effort after the playmaker had combined well with Cesc Fabregas in a tightly-congested penalty area.

The Saints were appealing for a spot-kick again when Mane went down in the box but their appeals were denied by referee Robert Madley despite contact being made during Ramires' challenge.

Southampton were the better side as the first half drew to a close and great work from Mane saw him dribble infield and send through a pinpoint pass for Ryan Bertrand, but Asmir Begovic narrowed the angle and denied the defender a goal against his former club.

The equaliser did arrive one minute before half-time though. A long pass from defence was chested down far too easily by Pelle on the edge of the box and Davis stepped up to rifle a low shot into the bottom corner.

Both sides made changes at the break, with Nemanja Matic replacing Ramires and Ward-Prowse coming on for Romeu.
Within minutes of the re-start, a sweeping Southampton passing move almost resulted in a goal, but Begovic did well to repel Mane's effort at close-range following Dusan Tadic's square pass.

Chelsea were struggling to generate clear-cut opportunities but felt they should have had a penalty. Falcao outmuscled Jose Fonte and went down in the box as he attempted to round Stekelenburg, but received a booking for what the referee saw as a dive.

That decision proved costly for the champions on the hour-mark. After Gary Cahill had given away possession, Pelle slipped through a pass which Terry completely misjudged, allowing Mane to race through on goal. Begovic got something on the ball in his attempt to save but not enough to prevent his side falling behind.

There was more woe for Chelsea on 72 minutes. This time it was Hazard who gave away the ball and Mane led a swift counter-attack before setting up Pelle to convert with a lethal finish into the far corner.

A crucial block from Terry denied Southampton a fourth after Mane won a battle of strength against Cahill down the left and brilliantly set up Tadic.

Chelsea almost had a goal back when a poor piece of goalkeeping from Stekelenburg allowed substitute Pedro the opportunity to shoot, but the ex-Barcelona man was just off target.

Mourinho: I'm the best manager Chelsea has ever had

    2004252_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reacted to questions regarding his future by insisting that if the club sack him, they will be sacking the greatest manager the club has ever had.

The reigning champions slumped to their fourth Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday, going down 3-1 to Southampton at Stamford Bridge despite taking the lead through Willian.

The defeat follows on from Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Porto in the Champions League and leaves the Blues in 16th place in the Premier League table, a distant 10 points behind leaders Manchester City.

"If the club wants to sack me they have to sack me because I am not running away from my responsibility, my team," he told Sky Sports after the game.

"To be champions now is obviously very, very difficult because the distance is considerable. I am more than convinced that we will finish top four.

"It is a crucial moment in the history of this club because if they sack me they sack the best manager this club has ever had.

"The message is that the results are the fault of the manager. This is a moment for everybody to assume their responsibilities and stick together."

Mourinho also insisted the Blues were being harshly treated by referees and insisted they were denied a penalty against Southampton, which could have changed the outcome of the game.

"The referees are afraid to give decisions for Chelsea," he added. "At 1-1, it is a huge penalty and once again we don't get.

"If the FA wants to punish me they can. They don't punish other managers. My players deserve it and the fans deserve it.

"Referees are afraid to give decisions for Chelsea. Why? Because there is always a question mark and we are always punished.

"Clear penalties are not given. Even in the Champions League in a match we lose 2-1, we are not given a penalty in the last minute.

"The penalty in this game is crucial because my team, at the moment, the first negative thing that happens, they collapse. The penalty was a giant penalty and after that the team lost even more confidence."

    Otamendi was expecting Aguero feats

    nicolas-otamendi-manchester-city_1vurvl6ao06d410hpfhm5bmrzw.jpg

Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi revealed he was relaxed despite his team struggling to open the scoring in the 6-1 romp over Newcastle because he knew what Sergio Aguero was capable of.

The hosts only opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Aguero cancelled out Aleksandar Mitrovic's opener for the visitors, but the second half soon led to an avalanche of goals as the Argentine led the rout with another four strikes. And Otamendi revealed his compatriot's exploits on Saturday were no surprise, and stated the striker's return to form bodes well for his side.

"We were not getting the breakthrough [against Newcastle], but we knew it was just a matter of being patient and waiting given our offensive potential," the centre-back told Goal after the match."It is important that Aguero managed the achievement, for himself, and for the team."

Otamendi has now made three consecutive Premier League starts since moving to Etihad Stadium from Valencia in the summer, and gave an update on how he was adapting while pointing out key differences in the football in England compared to Spain.

"English football is much faster and end-to-end," he continued. "Spanish football is different, more dynamic."Forwards in England are much stronger and extremely fast, so it requires more concentration and a top performance to defend against.

"I've recently been in the side and am training at my best in order to complete my adjustment."Otamendi earned a call-up to the Argentina squad for their World Cup qualifying matches against Ecuador and Paraguay, and admits the absence of Lionel Messi through injury will hurt them.

"He's the best player in the world and not having him in the team will be tough," the 27-year-old concluded. "Hopefully he can have a speedy recovery and get back to playing soon."

‘This is not a game like any other’ – Blanc builds up PSG-Marseille clash

    laurent-blanc_1cr6glabm2qik1ctpjnvcgvv6g.jpg

Laurent Blanc has said that Sunday’s ‘Classique’ between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille has to be seen as a special match, but warned that whatever the outcome, only three points are at stake.

The sides enjoy one of the fiercest rivalries in French football and will do battle at Parc des Princes on Sunday night, with Blanc admitting that it must be considered a special occasion.

“This is not a game like any other - especially for the fans of both teams,” he told the press.

“But at the end of the day, only three points are available. Our preparation remains the same.”

Blanc confessed that with their midweek Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, in which PSG claimed a 3-0 victory, has complicated his thinking prior to this match.

“We’ve only had only four days since we played, with a hard flight back from Ukraine because we arrived very late at night. For Marseille it is even worse because they played Thursday in the Europa League.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s presence in the starting XI had been a little under question after playing four matches in two weeks, but Blanc says this will simply help the Swede.

“There has to be sensible management of all players,” he said.

“Everyone would agree that competition is a good thing. For Ibrahimovic, my idea is to give him playing time. He can do much better, but these games have allowed him to return to his best physical level.

“During the season there will be competition and I’ll have to rest some players. Ibrahimovic will have his time.”

Meanwhile, the coach refused to be drawn on whether this is the most lopsided this fixture has been in recent years owing to the ongoing struggles of OM.

“It is the media who write and decide that,” he said. “The Classique is a media invention.

“The ambition of PSG is to win every game, whether it’s against Marseille, Lorient or anyone else. We have a lot of respect for these teams.

“I’m not predicting how Marseille will play. I only care about my team. It's a match to win in front of our fans and we know that if we do that we are going to make the PSG fans happy.”

PSG have won the fixture the last four times it has been played on home turf in Paris, each by a 2-0 scoreline.

'If the FA wants to punish me, then punish me!' - Mourinho's sensational post-match rant in full

    2023782_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was in defiant mood after watching his side's awful start to the season continue with a 3-1 defeat to Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

The loss sees the reigning Premier League champions drop to 16th place in the table with just eight points from eight games. They've already lost six games in all competitions this season.

Speaking after the game to Sky Sports, Mourinho spoke at length insisting sacking him would be a huge mistake as well as claiming referees are afraid to give decisions for his side.

    Mourinho's rant in full:

"Look, I think you know me. I think I don't run away from responsibility. First of all I want to say that because we are in such a bad moment, you shouldn't be afraid to be also honest. When we are in the top, I understand there is quite a big pleasure in putting us down. But when you are so down, I think it's time to be a little bit honest and to say clearly, the referees are afraid to give decisions for Chelsea.

"The result at 1-1, there's a huge penalty [claim] and once more, we don't get it. And a penalty's a crucial moment in the game, with the result at 1-1. I repeat, if the FA wants to punish me they can punish me, they don't punish other managers, it's not a problem for me. I want to repeat, my players deserve it. Chelsea fans deserve it. I am a Chelsea fan too. The referees are afraid to give decisions to Chelsea.

"Why? Because when they give there is always a question mark from you. There is always a question, always a critic. We are always punished. We are punished because Diego Costa is suspended. In other matches we see the same thing and it doesn't happen. Clear penalties are not given. And with us, it's one and one and one and one. Even in the Champions League, which is a game with not three officials but with five. We are not given a penalty in the last minute.

"This penalty in this game today is more than crucial. You know why? Because my team in this moment, the first negative thing that happens, the team collapses. Mentally, physiologically, the team is unbelievably down. It looks like good players are bad players. The first half was a game where we didn't show our quality but we were more than in control. One mistake, a lack of concentration, one goal and you arrive at half-time [at 1-1].

"In normal circumstances you come to the second half and you do your game. I told the players at half-time 'no panic, we are not losing 4-0'. The team comes with a good spirit and we have a penalty. The penalty is a giant penalty. And he was afraid to give it, like everyone else he was afraid to give it. After that the team lost even more confidence and you know that second goal is an individual mistake. Their third goal is another individual mistake. The team, mentally, they try and try but they collapse. They are in such a low moment that they collapse.

"I can also know what you are thinking, what you are saying in the studio, what people imagine, what is going to happen, what isn't going to happen. I want to make it clear… 1) I don't run away; 2) If the club wants to sack me, they have to sack me because I am not running away from my responsibility, my team. To be champion is obviously very, very difficult because the distance is considerable. I am more than convinced that we will finish top four. If the season is so bad that you finish top four, it's okay; 3) Even more important than the second, I think this is a crucial moment in the history of this club.

"You know why? If the club sacks me, they sack the best manager this club had. And secondly, the message is again the message of bad results. The manager is guilty. This is the message, not just these players, the other ones before, they got [the message] during a decade. This is a moment for everybody to assume their responsibilities. To stick together. This is what I want.

"The players still have to play until the end of the season with a gold champion thing in their shirt and I want to work, as always. I consider myself that I have a big self-esteem and big ego. I consider myself the best, leading the worst period of my career. The worst result of my career. Doing that as a professional hurts me a lot. Doing that at Chelsea hurts me twice. So I want to carry on, no doubt.
"I assume my responsibilities, it's time for everyone to assume their responsibilities. When you go down, to so many individual mistakes and fear to play, they have their responsibilities. Players that are performing really, really bad individually. I cannot come here and say 'you and you and you', is not my job, but I think it's clear that we are being punished by too many individual mistakes.

"Sadness brings sadness. Bad results they attract bad results. The first mistake is just the first because after comes another one. They still need to finish the first half winning two-three nil, the fear disappears, we come into the second half and play with a free brain, a free spirit. This is what this team needs. Unfortunately for them this is not happening.

"And again I repeat, I want to make it clear again, I don't want to be offensive. I don't want to be non-polite. The referees are afraid to give decisions. When you are top, you want to see people come down. When you people is down, give us a break. Be honest and be loyal with us. The team deserves that. The penalty is clear. 2-1 is a complete different story. Okay? Thank you."

Ranieri delighted with Leicester response after Norwich win

    riyad-mahrez-claudio-ranieri-stoke-city-premier-league-19092015_197scxw3pw2wszwuhuol6d0ge.jpg

Claudio Ranieri hailed the character of his Leicester City side as they got back to winning ways in the Premier League against Norwich City .

Jamie Vardy's penalty and Jeffrey Schlupp's fine goal on the counter-attack secured maximum points at Carrow Road, despite Dieumerci Mbokani's strike for the home side.

Leicester suffered their first defeat of the season at home to Arsenal last time out and Ranieri was delighted with the response from his players.

"We responded very well, showed good character, a good performance," he told Sky Sports. "In the first half we created a lot of chances to score, but also in the second half.

"It was a battle but I enjoyed it, we were very concentrated, Kasper Schmeichel made two great saves, we conceded one goal but we had six, seven chances to score ourselves.

"We know Norwich want to keep possession and open the space and we were ready to transition."

Vardy's penalty proved contentious as Sebastien Bassong appeared to make very little contact with the England forward, but Ranieri was in no doubt.

"Yes it was a penalty," he said, before adding: "Jamie was good but everybody had a good performance."

Midfielder Danny Drinkwater was full of praise for Vardy's performance after he took his Premier League tally to seven for the season.

"He's a key player for us. He can come out of nowhere, he was the difference," he said.

"We stuck at it, managed to roll sleeves up and grind it out. It's a good feeling after such a second half.

"It was massive, the gaffer said we needed to bounce back and show a bit of character and we showed what we're about. It's a good team to be in."

Koeman hits back at Mourinho: If they had one penalty claim we had two

    ronald-koeman-premier-league-chelsea-v-southampton_1vx3m2r6x0q2d1nem0d6v1h457.jpg

Ronald Koeman rejected Jose Mourinho 's claims a contentious refereeing decision proved pivotal in Southampton 's 3-1 Premier League away win over Chelsea .

The Blues' boss argued after the game that the result could have been very different had Radamel Falcao been awarded a penalty, rather than receive a yellow card for diving, with the scores level at Stamford Bridge.

Koeman gave short shrift to Mourinho's argument when informed of it though, telling Sky Sports : "Maybe so. It would have been 5-2 then, even worse for them.

"Maybe, if they had [claims for] one penalty we had [claims for] two penalties, that's a decision for the referee to make."

As for the crisis engulfing Mourinho, Koeman offered a philosophical response to his counterpart's problems.

"Great coaches can't always win in life," he said.

Debatable calls from the match officials aside, the Southampton boss was understandably thrilled with an accomplished performance from his team at the home of the reigning champions.

"We had a difficult start to the game, but we came back and we made it 1-1 with a great goal," he said.

"The difference was how we came out of the dressing room, pressed Chelsea and had fantastic movement. In my opinion, we totally deserve three points."

With his team moving up to ninth and due to host Leicester City after the international break on October 17, Koeman hopes the win away to Chelsea can fire Southampton to greater heights this season.

He added: "We showed belief and close to half-time we were the better team. We tried to play good football, offensive football because we believe in that way of football.

"If we can show this against Chelsea we can show it much more."

Begovic: International break could help Chelsea

    asmir-begovic-cropped_ck0x7qendah91fu2f6wls6bct.jpg

Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic says the international break will be more than welcome after the Premier League champions' title defence went from bad to worse.

Saturday's 3-1 home loss to Southampton left Jose Mourinho's side 16th with just eight points from as many matches and with the Portuguese under scrutiny.

Begovic, who has been deputising for the injured Thibaut Courtois, will now link up with Bosnia and Herzegovina for Euro 2016 qualifiers at home to Wales and away to Cyprus and feels the timing could help the Blues.

"Hopefully this break comes at a good time, we get a result in the next game and drive on from there," he told reporters, referring to Chelsea's next Premier League match at home to Aston Villa on October 17.

Begovic confirmed morale within the dressing room is low as the team's slump continues, but the former Stoke City goalkeeper backed his colleagues to respond in the months ahead.

"When things are not going your way it's tough," he said. "It's a mental thing as well, we need to keep fighting … run through a brick wall, as they say.

"That's the way it goes when results don't go your way, confidence takes a hit. That's life, that's football. You go through your ups and downs."

Mourinho: Don't boo my substitution - Willian vomited!

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says that the supporters who booed him for substituting Willian in his side's 3-1 defeat to Southampton did not realise the forward had vomited at half-time.

The Brazil international gave his side an early lead at Stamford Bridge with a free-kick but was replaced by Pedro on 64 minutes, a decision which saw Mourinho booed by his own fans, who were frustrated at having seen Steven Davis level matters before Sadio Mane put the Saints ahead on the hour mark.

Graziano Pelle then put the seal on a stunning Saints comeback to condemn reigning champions Chelsea to their fourth Premier League loss of the season and leave Mourinho having to justify his substitutions.

The Portuguese coach told reporters after the game: "The supporters booed the Willian decision today, and I would do the same as them if I didn't know that Willian was ill and vomiting at half-time.

"The doctor said it'd be very difficult for him to continue. They boo in a moment where they don't know what's going on.

"They had a negative reaction and I would do the same because the results are not what we want."The result leaves the champions 16th in the table on eight points - 10 behind leaders Manchester City.

Aguero: Pellegrini was right to take me off

    sergio-aguero-manchester-city-newcastle-premier-league-3102015_1g4j34shfzg3z1gftxm8p77uzq.jpg

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero backed Manuel Pellegrini's decision to substitute him in the 6-1 win over Newcastle United and deny him the chance to score a record sixth goal in the game.

Aguero became the fifth player in Premier League history to score five goals, scoring them all within 23 minutes at the Etihad Stadium.

With 28 minutes left, City manager Pellegrini replaced Aguero with Wilfried Bony, but the Argentine felt it was the right call.

He told Sky Sports: "It was a good decision from the manager to change me because it means no risk.

"I had a problem with my hamstring in the last game in the Champions League against Borussia Monchengladbach, but now I am feeling good."

Aguero joins Dimitar Berbatov, Jermain Defoe, Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole in an elite class of players to have scored five Premier League goals in one game, but he was quick to credit the team's achievement.

He said: "I've just realised here in the dressing room that I equalled this record, but the most important thing is that we won this game and got the three points.

"I am very happy. I am very happy with my goals but for me the three points is more important than the goals. Five goals is good and I am happy.

"I think it was four games without scoring any goals in the Premier League so I am really pleased about my performance."

Mourinho: I was not humiliating Matic

    nemanja-matic-premier-league-chelsea-v-southampton_vcdgs8o0emj9z1pcn2r2psbs.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho rejected suggestions he humiliated Nemanja Matic by bringing off the substitute when he had only been on for 27 minutes against Southampton.

The Blues lost 3-1 in a stunning Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge - the first time they have conceded three goals in a home league game under Mourinho in a result that leaves them with just eight points from as many games.

Matic had come on for Ramires at half-time with the score at 1-1, but was taken off for Loic Remy immediately after Graziano Pelle's fine finish had given the Saints a two-goal cushion.

Mourinho explained why he chose to replace him and not the likes of Cesc Fabregas or Oscar, who had been on since the start, although he did acknowledge the player's form has been below-par.

"It was not humiliating," he told reporters. "It was not the case. I do not do that to anyone, in football and in life.

"With the players, it is not easy. I like them, I trust them. I know they are good players but some of them are in a difficult moment - Matic is one of them. He is not playing well. He is not sharp defensively. He is making mistakes with the ball and not making the best decisions.

"I brought him on because even though Ramires did a great job in the first half with [Sadio] Mane, with a yellow card and an inexperienced referee I was afraid of a second yellow card and I changed him for Matic.

"Then when we concede a goal and I need to make a change. I want to play another striker, I have to take a player from the midfield. I kept Oscar because he is the one that creates more.

"I kept [Cesc] Fabregas because he is the one - maybe because of his formation in a difficult place to play which is Barcelona - who copes better with the pressure. Even not playing well, his emotional stability is high.

"So I decided to take off Matic but I like the player very much, I have a fantastic relationship with the boy. Humiliating him? For sure, I was not."

Fabregas is another player Mourinho feels has been out of form during his club's poor start to 2015-16, but the manager hailed the ex-Barcelona midfielder's strong character during troubled times.

He continued: "You feel the pressure. Some players are different than others and have a bigger personality.

"You can be critical of Fabregas because he is not playing especially well, I know that, but he never loses the confidence to try things, which for me is fundamental.

"I prefer a player that is not playing well but has confidence to try and is not influenced by the pressure or by some reaction from the crowd. I need the strong personality."

    Pellegrini explains Sterling withdrawal

    raheem-sterling_113z7e32z7hda1lsowourql9tj.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini confirmed the withdrawal of Raheem Sterling at half-time in Manchester City's thumping win over Newcastle United was a tactical decision.

City went into the break at the Etihad Stadium level at 1-1 having trailed for much of the half to Aleksandar Mitrovic's 18th-minute opener, a goal that was only cancelled out by Sergio Aguero three minutes before the break.

Pellegrini opted to replace his big-money summer signing at the break with Jesus Navas and City subsequently proved to be unstoppable in the second half, condemning the winless visitors to a 6-1 thrashing.

Speaking after the game Pellegrini made it clear that fitness concerns were not behind the England international's early departure.

"No, Raheem was not injured," he told reporters. "I think we needed another way to try and penetrate the defence.

"In this case, maybe we are talking about what Kun [Aguero] did because it was unbelievable and about Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.

"But I think that Jesus [Navas] was very important. He opened spaces that maybe in the first half we couldn't.

"Kevin improved playing on the left side. In this case it was not a good day for Raheem but he will continue being a very important player for us."

De Bruyne has now struck three times in four Premier League games for City since joining from Wolfsburg in August and Pellegrini believes the Belgium midfielder, is steadily adjusting to life back in the Premier League.

"I think that Kevin, in every game he settles a little bit more," he said.

"It is not easy maybe with the movement that we have in our attacking to start playing in a good performance when you don't know all the movements of all the other players.

"But I think that good and technical players like to play between each other. David [Silva], Kun, Yaya [Toure], Kevin De Bruyne, Sterling, Fernandinho – they are all technical players."

Vardy played for penalty, claims Norwich boss Neil

    jamie-vardy-watford-leicester-premier-league-03102015_14l31vmbgkbeh1cyn2p8wg05ju.jpg

Norwich manager Alex Neil was left frustrated after Jamie Vardy's "good striking play" won a crucial penalty in Leicester City's 2-1 triumph at Carrow Road.

England striker Vardy went down under a challenge from Sebastien Bassong in the first half, with referee Mark Clattenburg awarding the spot-kick despite minimal contact from the centre-back.

Vardy tucked home the penalty and Jeffrey Schlupp's second-half strike settled the match, despite a goal from Norwich substitute Dieumerci Mbokani.

Neil believes the 28-year-old was clever to win the penalty but was more frustrated by the way in which his side surrendered possession in the build-up to the goal.

"It is a hard one to call. I think the lad has played for it," he told reporters after the match. "He has stopped his body and gone down, which you could argue is good striking play from their point of view, but for us it is about losing a slack ball in the middle of the park.

"That was unnecessary and it happened for the second and that is what cost us."

Neil believes Norwich's poor use of the ball was ultimately costly in their third league defeat of the season.

"I think the first half we like to try and control the ball and control the game and if our use of the ball was up to scratch as it generally is we would have had enough quality to break Leicester down," he said.

"Our use of the ball was poor, the way we moved the ball was too slow and it was a bit predictable and Leicester, being a counter-attacking team, were set-up to take advantage of that.

"If you compare it with how quickly we moved the ball at West Ham last week and our quality on the ball and how well we retained it against another counter-attacking team, if we had hit those levels, particularly in the first half, we would have been good enough."
