:love:Beckham and Ferguson set for UNICEF charity match reunion

    334625_heroa.jpg

Manchester United greats Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham will be reunited at Old Trafford on November 14 in a charity match to raise funds for UNICEF.

Beckham will captain a Great Britain and Ireland team managed by Ferguson that will face a Rest of the World XI led by Carlo Ancelotti and skippered by Zinedine Zidane.

Money raised through profits from ticket sales and donations made on the matchday will go to UNICEF to help protect the world’s most vulnerable children.

Beckham said: "I want a world where children can grow up safe from violence, free from poverty and protected from preventable diseases.

"This match gives me the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and vital funds to help reach the children who need it most. I am delighted that my friend Zizou will join me in leading two teams, full of our friends and team-mates, at the best stadium in the world."

Former England captain Beckham made 394 appearances for United under Ferguson before departing for Real Madrid in 2003.

Ferguson, 73, retired in 2013, having won 38 trophies during 26 years in charge at Old Trafford.

Wenger lashes out at Ospina critics

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit out at the media following criticism of David Ospina after his error in the 3-2 defeat to Olympiacos in the Champions League in midweek.

Ospina fumbled an Olympiacos corner over his goal line, leading members of the press to question why Wenger had picked the Colombia international over Gunners No.1 Petr Cech for a must-win game.

However, the Frenchman has now hit out those who have criticised his team selection, insisting that "nobody analysed the numbers".

"Look, stop that story, or we stop the press conference," Wenger told reporters. "I think you lack creativity in the media, and you follow a bandwagon that is very, very boring.

"If you question Ospina, I question your knowledge of football. People don't analyse the game well. I heard one pundit criticise one thing, and everyone followed that.

"It's depressing. Yes, the goalkeeper made a mistake, but we could still have won the game."

Arsenal face Manchester United this weekend, with the Gunners currently three points behind Louis van Gaal's league leaders, and Wenger has confirmed that he will be without Laurent Koscielny at the Emirates.

"Laurent Koscielny is out for what looks like three weeks," he added.
"Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta will also miss out, but Francis Coquelin should be fit."

Rodgers: Liverpool have had a disastrous start

    1985472_heroa.jpg

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has described the start to their season as a "disaster" and says Sunday's Merseyside derby with Everton is a must-win match.

The Toffees are fifth after seven games while Rodgers' Liverpool are ninth, with a string of poor results having caused parts of Anfield to turn against Rodgers.

Though he hopes Reds fans show their support at Goodison Park, Rodgers is also aware that results are the best way to win over naysayers, though he expects a tough test from Roberto Martinez's men.

"Everton have done well," he told reporters. "They are a point ahead of us. They've had a good start and we've had a disaster!

"Over the past 12 months we've had to manage a lot of change and a lot of disruption. "I respect the booing. There is frustration when you don't win the game. You have to take it on the chin as manager and players.

"Winning games is key to having support - it's not about me, it's about supporting the team. It's still very early in the season.

"There's lot of improvement still to come. If we go into the Everton game as favourites it shows we're a big club. We're happy to have that here. The level of our opponent's game always goes up.

"It's another opportunity to get a victory. We respect that it will be a tough game. It's one we want to win for our supporters."

Thursday's Europa League home tie with Sion was deemed as an opportunity to get a second successive win to ease pressure on Rodgers' position, but they ended up drawing 1-1 much to the chagrin of their coach.

"We go into Sunday's game with confidence. We have quality in this team, we should have won that game last night 4-1," he added. "We're not giving away many opportunities but we're getting punished for mistakes. We need to cut out those mistakes."

"You can see the team is starting to evolve. We are creating a lot of chances. Now we need to start taking them. It's a huge game."

Daniel Sturridge was rested for the draw with Sion as he continues to work his way back to full fitness and Rodgers suggested he'd be back in his XI against Everton, while Christian Benteke remains a major doubt.

"With so many games we have to make sure we look after Daniel Sturridge," he added. "He's fresh and fit and looking forward to this weekend."

"You saw in the game last week Daniel's quality. He's so important for us. Top players give a team confidence. He has star quality.

"Otherwise, there's no real change with injuries. We're seeing how Benteke is over course of next 24 hours. Squad will be pretty much the same as the Villa game."

'This is the worst period in my career' - Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has admitted that Chelsea’s current run is the worst he has experienced since he became a manager.

The Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat in the Champions League against Porto on Tuesday, coming off the back of a disappointing start to the Premier League in which the club have earned only eight points from seven matches and lie 14th in the table.

“I define it as the worst period in my career, with the worst results in my career,” Mourinho said.

“I take it as a fantastic experience, but I don't want to repeat it, I want to finish it tomorrow and start winning matches again. I think it comes too late, to come after 15 years is too late.

“It should happen after two, three or four but it is something that is helping me to be better. Not the hardest challenge, no, just the worst results.”
The Portuguese also refused to come down too harshly on his players – and in the process took a swipe at the media.

“Players know when they make mistakes. I don't know what it's like in your offices, but nobody seems to care about your mistakes," he added.

Meanwhile, ahead of the visit of Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, he confirmed that he will have a full squad to work with, save injured goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, while he hinted there could once again be changes in his starting XI.

“My assistant reported that [Loic] Remy, Oscar and [Radamel] Falcao trained fantastically well when the squad was in Porto,” the former Real Madrid boss reported, having omitted the trio from his travelling party.

Since the Premier League began in 1992-93, Chelsea have only once picked up fewer points in their opening seven matches.

Reus returns for Germany's Euro 2016 qualifiers

Germany welcome back Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus for their concluding Euro 2016 qualifiers against Republic of Ireland and Georgia.

A toe injury forced Reus to miss the world champions' previous qualifiers against Poland and Scotland last month, where a pair of victories left Joachim Low's men top of the Group D standings - two points above Poland.

If Germany avoid defeat against Ireland in Dublin on October 8 they will secure a place at next year's finals in France before hosting Georgia in Leipzig three days later.Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno has been called into the national squad for the first time, winning a spot ahead of Hannover's Ron-Robert Zieler.

Low said: "Our goal is to win the two games against Ireland and Georgia and to qualify as group winners for the European Championship in France.

"I have great confidence in the players. These players are regularly called upon with their clubs in the league and at European level, they have a good rhythm."
On Leno's selection, Germany goalkeeping coach Andreas Kopke added: "I have already said that behind Manuel Neuer on the position of the goalkeeper we have several candidates in mind.

"I told Ron-Robert Zieler we know what he can do and what we have in him. Bernd Leno has earned this nomination through consistent and good [performances] at Bayer Leverkusen."

    Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen)

Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Emre Can (Liverpool), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Dortmund), Jonas Hector (Cologne), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Shkodran Mustafi (Valencia), Sebastian Rudy (Hoffenheim)

Midfielders: Karim Ballarabi (Bayer Leverkusen), Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund), Christoph Kramer (Bayer Leverkusen), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Manchester United).

Forwards: Mario Gotze (Bayern Munich), Max Kruse (Wolfsburg), Kevin Volland (Hoffenheim), Lukas Podolski (Galatasaray), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Andre Schurrle (Wolfsburg)

Pellegrini warns Belgium over Kompany call-up

    manuelpellegrini-cropped_g9irbusd8d1l1s66i0rv6nrd8.jpg

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini insists captain Vincent Kompany will be unable to play for Belgium despite being called up by national team coach Marc Wilmots.

Kompany has sat out City's last four matches since limping out of the Champions League defeat to Juventus in the middle of September and will again be absent on Saturday when Newcastle United travel to the Etihad Stadium.

The 29-year-old was called up to the Belgium squad for matches against Andorra and Israel on Friday morning, but while Pellegrini says he cannot stop his captain from travelling, it would be impossible for him to play a part on the pitch.

"Vincent continues to recover from his calf injury and we will see the way he improves the coming weeks," he told a press conference. "Vincent cannot play for Belgium."

Asked whether he would pull his captain out of international duty, Pellegrini replied: "No, I can’t ask him not to travel, if he is called he must go, but he cannot play so I don’t think he will play.
"He is an important player. He must be with his mates. Belgium is playing important things for the next European Cup. That was not a problem for him to go to the national squad."
The Chilean also revealed Yaya Toure is among five players not able to feature on Saturday, a list which also includes Gael Clichy, Fabian Delph and Samir Nasri.

Toure was withdrawn early in the second half of last weekend's heavy defeat at White Hart Lane with a hamstring injury, but started the Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday.

The Ivorian midfielder had clearly not recovered and was substituted at half-time in Germany, where City went on to overturn a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 and pick up their first points of this season's European campaign.

Pellegrini was pleased to see his team recover in that manner, as he says he has become tired of hearing about his side's supposed lack of spirit and desire.

"So many times I must read or hear this team has no character to play in Europe because we lost against Juventus, but we won against Bayern Munich away, we won against Roma away so I think this team has character," he continued.

"It was important to demonstrate when you don’t play very well that you have another way to win.

"It was very important because it is very difficult to qualify if you don’t have any points from the first two games. Maybe we didn’t deserve to lose here against Juventus but we did. Maybe there we won in the last minute.

"I am very happy with the character of team. It is not easy to come from 1-0 down and in the last 30 minutes to play the way we did so that demonstrates we have a strong team with strong character that plays the same way in Europe as we do here."

Chambers: I am learning from Mertesacker

    calum-chambers-cropped_m2toz7yapbgs1idqh9c2vf3uk.jpg

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has hailed Per Mertesacker's positive influence and has stressed the Germany international has helped him improve as a player.

Chambers joined Arsenal from Southampton in July 2014 and the 20-year-old is delighted to get the chance to play alongside experienced players such as Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel at the Emirates Stadium.

"I speak to Per a lot,” Chambers told Arsenal Player. "Per is always there to help me out.

"In training if I ever need someone or I’m a bit confused I ask Per, Koscielny or Gabriel what they would do.

"They always tell me what they would do and it is good to learn from as they are top-quality players."

Chambers had also attracted the interest of a number of other clubs when he joined Arsenal, but the presence of Arsene Wenger convinced him to join the Gunners.

"Wenger's presence was a massive factor," he added.

"Theo [Walcott] and Alex [Oxlade-Chamberlain] came from Southampton as well and they've both come through to the first team.

"Wenger's renowned for bringing young players through and developing them. That was a big factor in why I chose to come here, to work with him. I haven't regretted it one bit."

Diego Costa out as Nolito called up for Spain squad

    iker-casillas-diego-costa-porto-chelsea-champions-league-29092015_1xtonx11d98xo14ju1tw65puea.jpg

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has not been called up to the Spain squad ahead of their upcoming European qualifying matches, while Celta Vigo star Nolito has made the cut.

Costa, who as not been in sparkling form for Jose Mourinho's side this season, will miss the Euro 2016 qualifying matches with Luxembourg and Ukraine, but Nolito, who has been heavily linked with a return to Barceolona recently, has been given a chance by manager Vicente Del Bosque.

The Roja coach pointed to the Chelsea striker's one game suspension as a reason for his omission from the squad.

"We'll count with Costa in the future, but he is banned for one match," Del Bosque said.

Alvaro Morata replaces the naturalised striker, capping off a good week for the Juventus striker as he equalled Alessandro Del Piero's record of scoring in five consecutive Champions League games for the Old Lady in the 2-0 win over Sevilla.

Elsewhere, there are returns for Thiago and Bruno, though Andres Iniesta and Vitolo miss out through injury, though the World Cup winning coach faced questions on Koke's omission, suggesting that the Atletico Madrid midfielder has been left out so as not to aggravavate injury problems.

"We hope Sergio Ramos to be in the best form. If not, we'll look for solutions. Koke is not yet totally fine, we didn't call him for security reasons," the former Real Madrid manager added.

Del Bosque's squad go into the latest round of qualifying fixtures with 21 points, two ahead of Slovakia at the top of Euro 2016 qualifying Group C.

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Porto), David De Gea (Manchester United), Sergio Rico (Sevilla).

Defenders: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Marc Bartra (Barcelona), Iñigo Martínez (Athletic), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea).

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Bruno (Villarreal), Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea), Isco (Real Madrid), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Thiago (Bayern Munich), Juan Mata (Manchester United).

Forwards: Nolito (Celta Vigo), Pedro (Chelsea), Alvaro Morata (Juventus), David Silva (Manchester City) and Paco Alcacer (Valencia).

Ronaldo: I've been a bit of a bastard!

    2017852_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has apologised for being "a bit of a bastard" to the media at an event to celebrate him equalling Raul's record as Real Madrid's all-time leading goal scorer.

Ronaldo broke Raul's record of 323 goals for the Madrid club with a brace in the 2-0 Champions League win over Malmo on Wednesday.

The double in Sweden also took the former Manchester United forward passed the 500 career goals mark, joining the ranks of prodigious goalscorers such as Gerd Muller and Ferenc Puskas.

But at an event organised by Real, with his team-mates and coaching staff present, Ronaldo chose to thank those that had helped him throughout his career and also apologised for the way he has treated the media recently.

"I am very happy, thanks to my team-mates because without them this would never be possible," Ronaldo said. "Also thanks to all my coaches, [Manuel] Pellegrini, [Jose] Mourinho, [Carlo] Ancelotti, [Rafael] Benitez. They have always helped me, the equipment managers, the physios

"I also thank the media, because I know that lately I've been a little bastard with them, but it's my way of being.

"And my friends, Jorge Mendes and my mother. And the president for this event, Hala Madrid!"

There is some controversy behind the counting of the goal tally, with Ronaldo, the club and newspaper Marca all believing that the former Manchester United attacker has reached 324 goals, but official records suggesting the Portuguese remains on 323 goals, level with Raul.

The disagreement centres on a goal against Real Sociedad in 2010 which looped off Real team-mate Pepe and into the net, with the defender suggesting the goal should be Ronaldo's but official records disputing the claim.

But speaking at the event organised by the club, who have themselves awarded the disputed goal to Ronaldo, the 30-year-old spoke with pride about being associated with players such as Raul and Alfredi Di Stefano.

"For me it is an honour to receive this award, I never imagined when I dressed for the first time this shirt that I would be the best scorer of the team, that could beat my friend Raul and Alfredo Di Stefano," he added.

Carneiro slams FA over Chelsea and Mourinho dispute

    1786152_heroa.jpg

Eva Carneiro has broken her silence following her departure from Chelsea, criticising the Football Association for their role in her departure.

Carneiro tended to Eden Hazard on the pitch during a 2-2 draw with Swansea City on August 8 but subsequently drew the ire of the Blues manager, with the club briefly left with nine men following Thibaut Courtois’s sending off.

Mourinho criticised both Carneiro and her colleague Jon Fearn after the game, labelling their actions “impulsive”, and said their actions showed that they “did not understand the game”.

Carneiro’s role was subsequently reduced, and it was widely reported that she elected not to return to work despite being asked to do so prior to her departure in September.

And the 42-year-old has now spoken publicly for the first time, hitting out at the FA for failing to ask her to give a statement during an investigation into the incident.

“I was surprised to learn that the FA was allegedly investigating the incident of August 8 via the press,” she said.

“I was at no stage requested by the FA to make a statement. I wonder whether this might be the only formal investigation in this country where the evidence of the individuals involved in the incident was not considered relevant. Choosing to ignore some of the evidence will surely influence the outcome of the findings

“Last season I had a similar experience at a game at West Ham, where I was subject to verbal abuse. Following complaints by the public, the FA produced a communication to the press saying there had been no sexist chanting during this game. At no time was I approached for a statement despite the fact that vile, unacceptable, sexually explicit abuse was clearly heard.

“It is incidents such as these‎ and the lack of support from the football authorities that make it so difficult for women in the game. I admire what Heather Rabbatts has done and thank her and friends and colleagues who have supported me at this very difficult time.”

FA board member and renowned lawyer Rabbatts issued a statement following Carneiro’s departure, expressing her “sadness and anger” at her exit.

Ronaldo is a Real Madrid legend - Perez

    cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_rgh4j15lbxxg1oo4v7cpx5xxu.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has praised Cristiano Ronaldo with the Portugal international on the brink of becoming the leading goalscorer in the club's history.

Ronaldo netted twice in Madrid's 2-0 Champions League win over Malmo on Wednesday to take his tally for the capital side to 323, drawing level with club icon Raul, though the club, the player and Marca insist that the Portugal forward has netted 324, counting a deflected Pepe goal against Real Socieded in 2010 as part of the 30-year-old's tally.

Madrid organised an event on Friday to laud the 30-year-old's performances and Perez underlined Ronaldo's importance to the club.

"Real Madrid are a club that aim to achieve the impossible and giants like Cristiano Ronaldo make it happen," Perez indicated as Ronaldo, his family, team-mates and head coach Rafa Benitez looked on.

"Cristiano, the fans at Real Madrid love and admire you. They all know how much you mean to this club.

"You are a legend at the club that has won 10 European titles."

The Real president also indicated his belief that the deflected goal against Sociedad does count in Ronaldo's goal tally, suggesting that the forward has already overtaken Raul and reached 324 goals.

"He is our all-time top goalscorer and the best player in the world," Perez said.

Lewandowski would not score without his team-mates, says Guardiola

    lewandowski-cropped_13baro3fie4h12f9992zqnj3u.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola hailed Robert Lewandowski's fine form, but has insisted that the striker would not be as successful without the support of his team-mates.

Lewandowski has netted an incredible 10 goals in his last three outings for the Bundesliga champions and has already scored 14 times in all competitions this term.

Nevertheless, Guardiola has downplayed the hype surrounding the 27-year-old and has highlighted the role of the rest of the team ahead of Sunday's top-of-the-table clash with Borussia Dortmund.

"We are obviously very happy with Robert's form. You do not score three goals in one game that often, so we are pleased with it," Guardiola said on Friday.

"But we should not forget that Robert needs his team-mates. He would not score any goals without them.

"All the players are helping each other. That is the most important thing in the end."

Bayern face a top of the table clash with Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund on Sunday in Der Klassiker and Guardiola pinpointed striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a dangerous player.

Aubameyang has scored nine Bundesliga goals himself this season, just one fewer than Lewandowski, and Guardiola expects the Gabon star to cause Bayern problems this weekend.

"Aubameyang is incredibly dangerous. He has a lot of quality and is very fast," the former Barcelona manager added.

"Our defence will have to remain alert all game.

"It is nearly impossible to keep him quiet when he gets some space."

Buffon speaks out after Ballon d'Or snub

    2001152_heroa.jpg

Gianluigi Buffon admits he has been “overwhelmed” by the support he has received after missing out on this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist.

The 37-year-old helped guide Juventus to their fourth consecutive Serie A title last season, while the club also won the Coppa Italia and reached the Champions League final where they were beaten by Barcelona.

But despite this, Buffon has failed to make the 59-man list of candidates which includes only two Italians - Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Pirlo.

“This morning, on a day like any other, I looked at my phone was overwhelmed by the messages of support and solidarity, and not because I wasn’t nominated among the 50 or 60 candidates for the Ballon d’Or,” Buffon posted on his Facebook page.

“Honestly, I was not aware that the list would be drawn-up today, so I was caught by surprise by the flood of people gathering around me!

“By now you may have guessed, that for years I’ve been an incurable optimist, and it’s hard for me to feel resentment, frustration or above all, resignation.

“So do you know what I’m taking away from this incident? The spontaneous embrace I received this morning from all of you, and the media commenting on my exclusion.

“Thank you, it really warmed my heart, it was an act of great respect which didn’t embarrass me, but one which I loved for a thousand and one reasons.

“It was a personal thing, and it’s proof that I don’t have, and never have had, saints watching over me in heaven.

“I took what I’ve been given, and I got where I did on the basis of something that is often undervalued - merit.

“There are a lot of other reasons, but above all I like to think that you care about me as an Italian among Italians, but also as an Italian in the world, which makes me see even more beauty in this wonderful adventure that is life!

“Of course, I’ll tell you in all sincerity that I thought I might be among the five best goalkeepers of last season. Obviously it’s gone to my head.”

World's best coach Simeone can lead Atletico to win over Madrid - Juanfran

    juanfran-atletico-madrid_15whyng2d231j13fba7cfuugnv.jpg

Atletico Madrid full-back Juanfran believes "world's best coach" Diego Simeone can lead the Rojiblancos to victory over rivals Real Madrid on Sunday.

Simeone famously led Atleti to the Liga title in 2013-14 and enjoys an enviable record against their city rivals – something emphatically demonstrated when his men stormed to a 4-0 victory at the Vicente Calderon in last season's corresponding fixture.

But Atleti head into the latest showdown off the back of consecutive defeats to surprise Liga pace-setters Villarreal and Benfica in the Champions League, with question marks remaining over Simeone's decision to depart from his trusted 4-4-2 formation in favour of a 4-3-3 this term.

Speaking at a club foundation event, Juanfran said: "We have the best coach in the world. We are fully confident in how the system plays day after day, win or lose.

"Let's play like we play. The hallmarks are the same, even if we have gone two games without a win.

"The coach will make the best of things for Sunday, use the best possible system and take us down the path of victory.

"We will always be motivated before big games. The derby is special but, if something has made us great, it is that we have always given everything at home games, regardless of the opponent.

"We always go out to win and prove that we are better team, and we have to do that on Sunday. Our motivation is always the same - win, win and win."

Van Gaal: Wenger one of the world's best

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Arsene Wenger remains one of the best coaches in the world and says his longevity at Arsenal is a sign of great success.

The Dutchman will lock horns with Wenger at Old Trafford on Sunday, having guided United to the top of the Premier League after seven games.

By contrast, Wenger is once again under pressure in the Emirates Stadium hotseat, with Tuesday's defeat to Olympiacos leaving Arsenal's hopes of Champions League progression hanging by a thread.

Van Gaal, though, was quick to point out that Wenger – who celebrated 19 years as Arsenal manager this week – should be lauded for his longevity in an industry that has become increasingly unstable through his reign.

"I think that he is doing great work," Van Gaal said. "When you can, like Sir Alex Ferguson, stay in a club for such a long time you have to be very good. Otherwise you shall not succeed.

"I think Arsene Wenger is one of the best coaches in the world. Sir Alex Ferguson is the best because he won the most titles.

"It's easy to say criticise him for not winning the league but when you spend such a long time with one club and everybody is satisfied – the fans, the board, the players – then you are very good, believe me.

"I hope for you that you journalists spend such a long time with the same paper!"

When asked if he himself could persist with such a barren run, Van Gaal added: "That's difficult to answer because I have won a lot of titles and that's also my aim and I wanted to do it in different countries.

"Not only in the Netherlands, but after that in Spain, after that in Germany and after that in England – that's my ambition. I'm not the type to spend long in one place."

Mourinho: I have no crying prima donnas at Chelsea

    2003572_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho insists there are no ‘crying prima donnas’ in his Chelsea team and has revealed that he is openly criticising senior players during team meetings.

Mourinho has described his current run at Stamford Bridge is “the worst period in my career” as the Premier League champions have registered just two wins from seven Premier League games, while they head into Saturday’s clash with Southampton following a 2-1 defeat to Porto in the Champions League.

The 52-year-old has already indicated that he is unhappy with the performance levels of some of his players but is adamant that his team will not “hide” during their poor run of results.

“There is an animal that puts its head in the ground - an ostrich,” said the Chelsea manager.

“In the bad moments, you cannot do that and just wait for a better moment to come, or for the problems to be resolved by themselves. Or waiting for the moon to change and give you better vibrations. You make mistakes, you are in a bad moment, no ostrich, head up, face the problems, speak, work and for me this is the way.

“Sometimes, players on the pitch don’t want the ball. They hide. It’s the worst thing: you lose two or three matches, the next match you play at home and you don’t want to be there. I had players like this, even in big clubs.

"But I think we showed against Arsenal that we don’t have that profile. We came against Arsenal in a worse run than now, after Crystal Palace and Everton, and everybody was there. I don’t think we’ll be in trouble not to have the desire and personality to play.”

“We all communicate openly. There are no prima donnas crying. Everyone wants to do well and accepts the criticisms, and when you make mistakes you have to speak about it. You know what I call that? In football? ‘Coaching’.

“I don’t have prima donnas who cannot be criticised and, of course, in front of the other players. Because I ‘coach’. When I criticise the mistake of my right-back Ivanovic and Ola Aina is present, it’s an education for him. When I criticise a mistake by Gary Cahill and John Terry it is in the meeting, if he hasn’t been playing, he knows what I want. If I criticise Willian for his movement, Pedro Rodríguez, a player I have only worked with for a few weeks, is listening and learning.
“I like the group to speak. I stimulate the group to speak. Sometimes, when they don’t do it enough, I ask questions so there is more communication.

"So, for Porto’s second goal on Tuesday, I asked the goalkeeper: ‘The goal is not your fault, but did you communicate enough? And were you speaking with the zone man, maybe somebody comes from behind, to anticipate that space? Did you speak with him enough?’ It’s normal. [Asmir] Begovic said he did, but that he could do it in a more persuasive way. So he can do better.

“[Branislav] Ivanovic likes to speak with me about his mistakes, and is not crying. He’s not crying, he’s not a prima donna, and I’m critical with him. We speak about what he has to do to try and improve. Simple as that. But he’s a fantastic player. He’s not playing well but he’s a fantastic player.”

Arsenal can win the Premier League, insists Wenger

Arsene Wenger remains confident that Arsenal can lift the Premier League, despite a mixed start to the season.Sunday sees the north Londoners measure up against Manchester United, who sit top of the table after seven games.

But Wenger pointed out that the gap separating the two club was far from insurmountable at this early stage in the campaign.

“If I tell you now that we are three points behind Man United, playing Man United at home and I don’t believe that we can win the Premier League, what do you tell me? You will slaughter me," the Frenchman told reporters in Friday's press conference.“We play in the Premier League on Sunday. We have just won 5-2 at Leicester, so I don’t see why we should be absolutely down. We are on the back of three or four good results in the league."

Wenger also tried to brush off Arsenal's shock Champions League defeat to Olympiacos in midweek, insisting it would not have an impact on the weekend's match.“We had a disappointment in the Champions League, we have to analyse it well.

But I don’t see why we should not believe we can beat Man United," he affirmed.
“It was disappointing to lose, but overall every competition is different, you have to go in a different competition in a different state of mind and we have to be inspired by what we did at Leicester.”

Rodgers: I'm not worried, my job isn't in danger

Brendan Rodgers says he is not worried about being sacked by Liverpool and insists his job is not in any danger.

The Reds finished sixth in the Premier League last season and currently lie ninth in the table after seven weeks.

Poor performances this term have seen pressure increase on Rodgers, but he maintains he has spoken to those in charge at Anfield and his job is safe for the time being.

“I am not worried," he told reporters. "That is not me being arrogant or having been given any assurances.

"I will do my best with what I am working with and our notion is to win the game against Everton on Sunday.

“I don’t want you to take away that the board haven’t reassured me. We have exchanged text messages and I have spoken to Ian Ayre, the chief executive.

“There is no change there. No drama.”

"We will go into the game to perform and win well. If we get a wee bit of luck, if we earn a bit of good fortune we can win the game.

“It is rebuilding a group again, new players and going again."

And Rodgers is confident of recovering from the situation and turning Liverpool into title challengers/

“We know it’s a long season – it’s still very early – and we’re making progress as we go along, and we know we have some outstanding players like Daniel Sturridge to come back into the ranks.

"Once we have them, we’ll be in a position to challenge.

"We have a number of players coming back into the team and we have shown in the last league game we have the ability to score and create goals again and that will be important going into that game.

"There is a lack of quality and killer instinct in the final third in particular. In these last four games we have had a bit more rhythm in our game and started to create more chances.

“It is a mixture of confidence, quality, composure. If Sturridge plays against Sion he probably gets three goals and that is quality. But he is not ready to play, the other players had good chances and I am sure over time those chances will be taken.”

Sterling: I never refused to play for England

    raheemsterling-cropped_13to5ooyu96ym1mrbyvfgl1b3j.jpg

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has denied that he refused to play for England, claiming he spoke honestly with manager Roy Hodgson over his fitness.

Sterling missed England's Euro 2016 qualifier with Estonia last October, with Hodgson stating after the game that the 20-year-old told him he was "a little tired".

However, Sterling - who moved to City from Liverpool for £49 million in July - has refuted claims he asked to sit out the game in Tallinn.

"The manager asked me a question and, being the person I am, I answered honestly," he told The Guardian.

"He asked me how I was feeling and I said I was OK but ‘my legs do feel a bit tired’. I never once said: ‘I don’t want to play’ or anything like that. He just asked me a general question and I was honest.

"I didn’t lie and say: ‘Oh yes, I feel 100 per cent,' but at the same time I never said I didn’t want to play. Obviously, the manager changed his mind about me playing and probably based it on that conversation but I was just being honest."

Sterling admits coverage of his controversial exit from Liverpool was hard to accept and believes criticism of his off-field behaviour was extreme, despite attempting to force his way out of Anfield.

"After that, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone; all the negativity that came through. It was difficult for me," he added.

"I don’t mind bad press when it is about football because hopefully you can do something to put it right. It just felt towards the end [at Liverpool] it was a bit personal. People developed this perception of me and it was shocking to find the way that some people viewed me.”
