Juninho: Neymar must not focus on replacing Messi

    neymar-cropped_ynloohqh38c91sews4expnoyq.jpg

Neymar should not put pressure on himself to fill the void left at Barcelona by Lionel Messi's injury, according to former Brazil international Juninho Pernambucano.

The Argentine was ruled out for two months with a knee injury in September, missing the Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen and the Liga defeat to Sevilla on Saturday.

But the former Lyon midfielder does not believe it should be solely down to Neymar to minimise the impact of Messi's absence at Camp Nou."Neymar's thoughts should not be: 'I am going to replace Messi, I'm going to get the ball, score all the goals and make everything happen'," Juninho told Globo.

"It cannot be like this, but he has to take the initiative and know that Messi is not on the field and he maybe has to take the lead."With the Argentine absent, he may have to do this."

While Juninho accepts that Neymar is comfortable with the responsibility required to lead a big team through his experience as captain of Brazil, he believes that the situation at club level is different.

"Even with the increased pressure it is not something that Neymar is not used to," he added."At Santos he was always the centre of attention, and with the Brazilian national team."What will be harder, to lead the five-time world champions or the Spanish and European champions?

"I think that in Barcelona it is more difficult. In Brazil, he knows that he is already the leader of the team by what he does on the pitch and due to the absence of other players of his level."Therefore, I think that with Brazil it is easier and our need today causes us to have more patience with him.

"Nothing is easy - neither in the Selecao nor at Barcelona. The Brazilian national team is the best known in the world and Barcelona is the best club in the world.
"And when they lose their best player it is also difficult."

Neymar will miss Brazil's first two World Cup 2018 qualifying fixtures against Chile and Venezuela as he serves the remaining two games of a suspension carried over from this year's Copa America.

Man Utd haven't seen the best of Martial yet - Deschamps

    anthony-martial-memphis-depay-manchester-united-southampton-premier-leage-20092015_i6mivsu19qw91mfyr5zurzowh.jpg

Anthony Martial is capable of even more than he has shown at Manchester United this season, according to Didier Deschamps.

The 19-year-old has scored three goals in four Premier League matches this season - finding the net with 50 per cent of the shots he has hit for United since joining from Monaco in the summer.

While coach Louis van Gaal admits there has been some luck involved in the striker's bright start, Deschamps, who has called him up to the France squad for their upcoming friendlies, is confident that Martial has immense potential.

"He is with us because I think he has a very interesting potential," he told reporters.

"He is not a very big character. That shyness does not bother me when it comes to young players who arrive as part of the selection.

"He still has steps to take in his development. It changed his world moving to Manchester United this summer."

Xavi dreams of Barcelona coaching job

    xavi-cropped_xvt7bq151l4j1e10bvfp2qdhp.jpg

Xavi is hopeful of returning to former club Barcelona in the future, hinting that he has his eyes on the coach's position.

The midfielder joined Al Sadd after more than two decades with the Camp Nou club, where he won eight La Liga titles as well as the UEFA Champions League four times.

And the 35-year-old revealed he has already begun his coaching studies and is aiming for a return to his former stamping ground.

"I like the pitch, being close to the actual football and what happens in the game itself," Xavi said in an interview with Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.

"I'm going to learn the trade - I've already started my education here at the Aspire Academy.

"I'm following Spanish football from over here [Qatar] while I'm still playing, and I'm really enjoying myself.

"After that, I don't know what the future will hold for me, but of course I'd like to return to Barca one day.

"That's my aim, and the closer it is to the pitch, the better."

Carvajal out for Spain with ankle injury

    danicarvajal-cropped_8xk2d2zh5xcf1enxss27lyhcp.jpg

Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal is set to miss Spain's forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers after his club confirmed he has suffered an ankle injury.

Carvajal sustained the problem in Sunday's derby against Atletico Madrid, making way to be replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa before half-time having set up Karim Benzema's opening goal in the 1-1 draw.

In a brief statement released on their official website on Monday, Real announced that Carvajal "has been diagnosed with an injury to the peroneal tendons in his right ankle".

The length of time he will spend on the sidelines was not disclosed, pending further assessment of the injury, although AS reported that Carvajal faces an absence of between two to three weeks.

National team coach Vicente del Bosque could seek to call up defensive cover following the news that Real Sociedad centre-back Inigo Martinez is also out with a muscle injury.

Reigning European champions Spain are expected to confirm their their place at Euro 2016 with victory over Luxembourg on Friday before travelling to Ukraine in their final qualifier.

:(:(:(Mata: Manchester United unacceptable against Arsenal

    juan-mata-cropped_n2bfkgft66s71rykuif2il6ib.jpg

Juan Mata has voiced his frustration with Manchester United's display against Arsenal and feels their start at the Emirates Stadium was "unacceptable".

Louis van Gaal's men fell 3-0 behind within 20 minutes and failed to get back in the game in the remaining 70 minutes, eventually succumbing to the Gunners in north London.

And Mata believes United will struggle to compete for trophies if they do not improve on Sunday's performance, even if he feels they improved after half time.

"A start like this from us is unacceptable; if we want to fight for big things we must learn the lesson as soon as possible," Mata wrote in his weekly blog.

"The only thing I can say is that we shouldn't play a game like this again. When we were starting to react and move the ball, Alexis [Sanchez] scored the third one.

"It's not easy to beat Arsenal at their stadium, but when you lose 3-0 after the first 20 minutes then it's almost impossible.

"From that moment we tried to stop them but we didn't create chances, only a good one from Anthony [Martial] right before half time.

"If we had scored that one, things could have been different, but nothing happened after the break. We tried to get back into the game, fighting until the end, but obviously we were penalised by our horrible start."

United dropped to third-place after the defeat, with Arsenal now second, though both sit on 16 points.

    Mertesacker hails Alexis and Ozil

    alexis-sanchez-cropped_1pa3la4lhmzqu1wk9wdtctxsmx.jpg

Per Mertesacker has lauded the impact of both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in the wake of Arsenal's 3-0 Premier League win over Manchester United.

Alexis netted twice in Sunday's victory, while Ozil also found the net as the Gunners ran riot in the opening 20 minutes of the clash, racing into a three-goal lead.

And Mertesacker has hailed the duo after their performances, highlighting their importance to the club.

"It's very important that they find each other in the final third," Mertesacker told Arsenal's official website when questioned about Arsenal's goalscorers.

"We are very dangerous on the break and even more so with Alexis and Ozil."

Mertesacker was also unsurprised with Arsenal's lightning quick start to the game, and insists they are well aware of their own abilities.

He added: "We pushed really hard in the first 10 or 15 minutes and after that we tried to defend as well as possible, and most of the time we did that.

"The start was not shocking for us, I think we are capable of doing that, but we have to kind of remind ourselves that we can do such things."

Arsene Wenger's side sit second in the table, having climbed above United with the win.

Inter have faith in Mancini - Zanetti

    javier-zanetti-inter-champions-league_19ueseglwqy6a12j8p0j8w4lyr.jpg

Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti has backed coach Roberto Mancini and is confident that he is steering the club in the right direction.

The Italian, who took the San Siro side to three consecutive Scudetti in his first spell at the helm, saw his club knocked off top spot in Serie A at the weekend.

Inter's 1-1 draw with Sampdoria enabled Fiorentina to move two points clear at the summit with a victory over Atalanta, but Zanetti is still pleased with their start to the season.

"We are a team that can improve even more and Mancini is doing a fantastic job," he told Radio Rai.

"We have a lot of faith in what Roberto is doing."

Having failed to qualify for Europe last season following Mancini's arrival in November 2014, Zanetti is hopeful of a more fruitful campaign this time around.

However, he did concede that the team needs time to gel following a number of new additions.

"It is proving to be a hotly-contested championship this year and it's too early to talk about the title. Our objective is to be back among the contenders," the former full-back added.

"I want us to fight until the very end, but we still have some growing to do as a team because there have been a lot of changes in the squad.

"When so many new faces arrive some of them need time to adapt and some have come from different leagues.

"We need to work together and when things don't go our way, we must keep our cool and trust in the work we are doing."

    Casillas impressed by 'fantastic' Navas

    iker-casillas-cropped_mfcjzht55vmr12ggznin42amz.jpg

Iker Casillas has praised the form of Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas and hopes he can help his former club progress.

Casillas accumulated 725 appearances for Real in a glittering 16-year career at the Santiago Bernabeu, before he moved to Porto in the close-season.

The Spain captain has been impressed by Navas, who has conceded just twice in his first seven La Liga outings this season.

"Keylor's form has been fantastic, he is having a very good season," Casillas said.

"It is not an easy position, more so in recent years, but Keylor, with his experience and his way of playing is doing well.

"I hope he does really well because that will be good for the team."

The 34-year-old's exit from the Bernabeu came in acrimonious circumstances, but he refuses to think negatively about his time with the Spanish giants.

"I do not have to evaluate the things that happened. I always remember the positive things and I am very grateful to Real Madrid and the people who helped shape me," he added.

"I'll never look back. Everything I have I owe to Madrid."

However, Casillas feels that Real are still on course to challenge for honours under new coach Rafael Benitez.

"New players have come in. They demand the absolute maximum of them, but as the games go by they'll come good and the team will get better.

"They're on the right track and I'm sure the same teams will be up there at the end."

Del Bosque reinforces Spain after injury setbacks

    mikelsanjose-cropped_1mnncmtxjb14r1cwkmyxn1c8xp.jpg

Vicente del Bosque has called Villarreal full-back Mario Gaspar and Athletic Bilbao duo Mikel San Jose and Xabi Etxeita into his Spain squad for their concluding Euro 2016 qualifiers against Luxembourg and Ukraine.

Del Bosque was forced to bolster his squad after Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal and Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez were forced out of action with respective ankle and muscular injuries, joining Mario's club team-mate Bruno Soriano (knee) on the sidelines.

Defensive midfielder San Jose has three international caps, while centre-back Etxeita and Mario are yet to represent their country at senior level.

European champions Spain will confirm their place at Euro 2016 if they complete the formality of a victory over minnows Luxembourg on Friday.

Martial: I'm far from becoming the next Henry

    anthony-martial-memphis-depay-manchester-united-southampton-premier-leage-20092015_i6mivsu19qw91mfyr5zurzowh.jpg

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has indicated his belief that he is far from matching the level of former Arsenal attacker Thierry Henry and has revealed manager Louis van Gaal's role in his move from Monaco .

Martial enjoyed a sparkling start to his Old Trafford career, with goals in Premier League wins against Liverpool and Southampton and in the League Cup against Ipswich Town.

But United's progress was derailed somewhat by a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday and the France striker says he is still looking to the Gunners legend for inspiration, hoping to one day reach Henry's level.

"Thierry Henry? He is a legend in England. I have everything left to prove," Martial told the French radio station RMC .

"Maybe, with hard work, I will finally reach Henry's level. But at the moment, I'm far from it."

The 19-year-old became the world's most expensive teenager following the move from Monaco on deadline day in a deal that could rise as high as £58 million and the France international has revealed the reasons why the club were such an appealing draw.

"Why I chose Manchester United? Because, for me, they are amongst the 5 best clubs in the world," Martial said.

"I also really wanted to continue to play in the Champions League. This is what made my decision. And I know Van Gaal wanted me. That's what motivated me to take a decision.

"It was very important to show the coach that he could trust me."

Martial has also spoken of his level of self confidence, insisting that he never doubted that he would be able to step up to Premier League football but suggesting that the contests are more intense than in Ligue 1.

"I knew that at Manchester United I would have my chance, it was just a matter of grabbing it," the 19-year-old continued.

"It's much faster in England, there is a lot of intensity but that's what I was looking for."

Off the pitch, the France international has indicated that he has begun to settle into life in Manchester, learning the language, but was surprised at the warm welcome he recieved from his team-mates.

"When I came to Manchester United, everyone came to see me. I was surprised by this," Martial added.

"Everyone tried to speak to me, but with the language barrier, it was difficult."

"I am taking english courses; it's difficult but I will get there."

Cech: Alexis back to his best

    petr-cech_4mkzxcfqxdk71e5wmsz6m1czv.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has hailed Gunners team-mate Alexis Sanchez following the comprehensive 3-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

Sanchez had a slow start to the Premier League season, but following a hat-trick last week's 5-2 win over Leicester City and a brace in the win over Louis van Gaal's side, Cech believes that the Chilean is back to his best.

According to the former Chelsea goalkeeper, the forward's slow start was down to a prolonged stint at the Copa America in the close-season, eventually gaining a winners' medal with Chile.

"We're pleased that he's back with his energy, with his enthusiasm and you can see that he feels confident and with performances like that, it's great for the team," Cech told Arsenal Player.

"It's always hard for the players when you have the Copa America.

"He won it, he was there for a really long time, didn't have much break and then came back and needed to start again.

"You could see that everybody from the Copa America had a slow start, in other teams and competitions as well.

After deputising for the hapless David Ospina in the damaging Champions League defeat to Olympiacos last week, Cech returned to collect his fourth Arsenal clean sheet in the win over United and the 33-year-old praised the Gunners' defenders.

"Every clean sheet counts. There was an important save right at the end of the first half, which I'm pleased with," the Czech Republic international goalkeeper added.

"The whole team defended very well as a unit against Manchester United and we deserved the clean sheet."

The Champions League-winning goalkeeper also indicated that Arsenal's blistering start was key to controlling Sunday's game.

"We put in the right intensity and the first goal helped," he continued.

"Once you go one up, you can get the game under control.

"What was good was that we searched for the second and third goals and they came pretty quickly. We managed to get ourselves the advantage and I think we did remarkably well to control the game afterwards."

Romero accepts number two status behind De Gea

    sergioromero-cropped_he1em6dv5lw717wmo4z433q4h.jpg

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero says he accepted he was destined to become the club's second-choice stopper when David de Gea signed a new contract in September.

Argentina international Romero moved to United during the summer as Louis van Gaal bolstered his goalkeeping options amid mounting speculation that De Gea would return to his native Spain with Real Madrid.

Romero subsequently started United's first six games of the season but De Gea's move to Real dramatically broke down on transfer deadline day and the former Sampdoria stopper has since been consigned to back-up duties, though he says he is willing to accept such a role.

"I took the matches when I was given the chance to play, but when De Gea renewed it was obvious he was going back to the team," the 28-year-old told Ole.

"De Gea won the place over the years he was there. The coach talked to me and I understood perfectly."

Romero returns to international action this week as Argentina begin their 2018 World Cup qualification campaign against Ecuador, and he has called on his team-mates to step up in the absence of injured talisman Lionel Messi.

"We have lost our ace of in the pack," Romero added. "We hope he recovers fast to have him back on the field, hopefully back stronger than before."

Bale named Wales player of the year once more

    garethbale-cropped_2gzjqynf4xe01r6mgpps1dfhc.jpg

Gareth Bale has been named as Wales' player of the year for a record fifth time.

The Real Madrid star has collected the award in five of the last six years, with the anomaly coming in 2012 when Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen took the prize.

Bale has excelled during qualification for Euro 2016, scoring six goals to bring Wales to the brink of reaching their first major international tournament since the 1958 World Cup.

Chris Coleman's team need a point from their remaining Group B matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and minnows Andorra to be sure of a spot in France next June.

Bale swept the board at the Football Association of Wales ceremony in Cardiff, also triumphing in the fans' and players' player-of-the-year categories.

"Look at the last year and he's scored some incredible goals for us," said Coleman.

"All the players have done fantastic, but in my book he deserves it because of what he's done in this campaign."

:DRonaldo REVEALS the full extent of Sir Alex Ferguson's hairdryer treatment

    2036922_heroa.jpg

It appears that even Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't immune to Sir Alex Ferguson's infamous hairdryer treatement.

The former Manchester United manager was known to lose his temper in the dressing room, and in the BBC's upcoming documentary 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Secrets of Success', which will be aired at 10.30pm on October 11, Ronaldo revealed the full extent of the Scot's wrath.

"I remember sometimes when we do something bad or we lost some games he kick the chairs and he kick the boots, he kick everything, the waters, the drinks, and he’s so red and ‘f**k you, you should pass the ball you," said the Real Madrid forward.

"it was unbelievable but it was good - because we learn."

    Mourinho charged with misconduct

    jose-mourinho-chelsea-champions-league-15092015_2jbhpw504lyv1pajhp6t2exku.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct for his post-match comments in the wake of the Blues' 3-1 defeat to Southampton.

Mourinho embarked on a seven-minute rant after the loss, insinuating that referees are "afraid" to give decisions to his side after seeing Radamel Falcao booked for simulation with the score at 1-1.

"The result at 1-1, there's a huge penalty [claim] and once more, we don't get it," he told Sky Sports. "And a penalty's a crucial moment in the game, with the result at 1-1. I repeat, if the FA wants to punish me they can punish me, they don't punish other managers, it's not a problem for me.

"I want to repeat, my players deserve it. Chelsea fans deserve it. I am a Chelsea fan too. The referees are afraid to give decisions to Chelsea.

"Why? Because when they give there is always a question mark from you. There is always a question, always a critic. We are always punished. We are punished because Diego Costa is suspended. In other matches we see the same thing and it doesn't happen.

"Clear penalties are not given. And with us, it's one and one and one and one. Even in the Champions League, which is a game with not three officials but with five. We are not given a penalty in the last minute."

Mourinho has now been reprimanded by the FA, as he predicted he would be, and the Portuguese has until 6pm on October 8 to respond to the charge.

Chelsea have struggled in the Premier League this season and currently sit 16th in the Premier League, having won just two of their opening eight games.

    Rodgers' statement after Liverpool sacking

    1850352_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers admits he has been left “incredibly disappointed” after being sacked by Liverpool.

The 42-year-old was dismissed following Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday which left the club 10th in the Premier League with three wins from eight games.

Rodgers joined Anfield in 2012 and nearly guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his second season before finishing runners-up to Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp is the preferred candidate to replace Rodgers, with Carlo Ancelotti also in the running.

RODGERS’ STATEMENT TO THE LMA IN FULL...

“I am, of course, incredibly disappointed to be leaving Liverpool Football Club. It has been both an honour and a privilege to manage one of the game’s great clubs for the last three years.

“I have worked every day to represent the club to the best of my ability, to develop both individual players and a team that the club’s magnificent fans can be proud of. There have been some very memorable moments during my time at Liverpool and I would like to thank all of the players for their hard work and commitment.

"The current squad is one in transition, but they have some real talent and are showing a strong sense of togetherness. I expect to see them continue to grow and develop over the coming weeks and I wish them and my successor well for the rest of the season.

“Liverpool has a magnificent football heritage and I have nothing but respect and admiration for the history, tradition and values that make the city and the club so exceptional. As well as my players, I would like to thank everyone connected with the club; Fenway Sports Group, the Liverpool Directors, in particular Ian Ayre, my coaching staff, the staff throughout the club, the volunteers, the Academy staff and its young players and of course the amazing Liverpool fans for their unwavering support, passion and dedication which has made my time at the club so special.

“Finally, I would like to give a special mention to John W. Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon. They gave me this great opportunity and even though we will no longer be working together I am sure our relationship and friendship will continue into the future.”
