AC Milan 0-4 Napoli: Mihajlovic's men humiliated by Insigne & Co.

    2030762_heroa.jpg

Lorenzo Insigne scored twice as Napoli turned on the style to continue a fine run of form in a 4-0 rout at Milan on Sunday.

Italy international Insigne was a scorer in Napoli's 2-1 win against Serie A champions Juventus last weekend, and he was on target twice in the second half against a hapless Milan, who suffered their biggest home defeat in six years since losing 4-0 to a Jose Mourinho-led Inter.

Napoli were more than good value for the scoreline and victory at San Siro stretches their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight matches.

Maurizio Sarri's side were given a helping hand for the first goal as Cristian Zapata's woeful defensive clearance led to a swift counter-attack that was clinically finished by Allan.

But there was no luck about the second goal shortly after the break as Insigne combined brilliantly with the impressive Gonzalo Higuain before bending home.

Insigne was celebrating again in the 67th minute after netting an excellent 30-yard free-kick, before Rodrigo Ely's own goal summed up Milan's misery.

Sinisa Mihajlovic has thus far failed to break Milan from their recent struggles and, though his side dominated possession in the opening stages, they only had a harmless long-range effort from Ricardo Montolivo and a scuffed shot from Juraj Kucka to show for their efforts.

And their failure to use the ball better was punished by Napoli in the 13th minute.

Marek Hamsik seized upon Zapata's poor clearance to feed Insigne and he in turn played a neat throughball to Allan, who coolly slotted past Diego Lopez when one-on-one.

Higuain then showed great skill to bring down a long pass and turn Zapata in one fluid movement, but his resulting shot was tame and gathered by Lopez.

The Argentina striker was proving a threat and he fired another warning with a flashed shot across goal from the right of the penalty area.

For all Milan's endeavour they produced little in terms of goal threat, and Napoli clinically doubled their lead three minutes after the break.

Insigne played a brilliant one-two with Higuain and curled his shot from the left of the penalty area into the far corner past a helpless Lopez.

Milan forced a rare effort on target when Ely's flicked header from Giacomo Bonaventura's cross was well held by Pepe Reina.

But Insigne put the game beyond all doubt with just over 20 minutes remaining with a sublime curling free-kick that Lopez got his hands to but was unable to stop nestling in the left-hand corner.

There was worse to come for Milan, though, as Ely slid in to clear Faouzi Ghoulam's cross and succeeded only in stabbing into his own goal, leaving Mihajlovic with plenty to ponder heading into the international break.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Marseille: Record-breaking Ibrahimovic secures Classique victory

    2031262_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice to become Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time top goalscorer as Laurent Blanc’s side beat Marseille 2-1 in Le Classique.

The PSG striker moved to 110 goals for the capital club - surpassing former Portugal striker Pauleta - having converted two first-half penalties as the leaders came from behind to extend their unbeaten run against their south-coast rivals to 10 matches.

Michy Batshuayi looked to have ensured Marseille a half-time lead when he nodded home his sixth Ligue 1 goal of the season but Ibrahimovic's quick-fire double put paid to that.

The striker was bundled over by Steve Mandanda before levelling the match and equalling Pauleta's record, while his historic second came after Rolando's handball in the area.

Another penalty arrived after the break, although Abdelaziz Barrada's effort from 12 yards, after a foul from Serge Aurier, was kept out by Kevin Trapp.

Ibrahimovic was withdrawn to a standing ovation from the home fans 20 minutes from full-time as PSG moved five points clear at the summit, leaving Michel's men without a win in five matches.

Despite their recent struggles, Marseille started brightly in the capital although Mandanda was called on to make two comfortable saves from Ibrahimovic.

The Swede was again thwarted by Mandanda at close-range following a fortuitous rebound off Nicolas N'Koulou with Angel Di Maria going close for PSG after cutting in from the left-hand side.

However, Marseille struck first blood when Batshuayi headed in the opener half an hour in.

Barrada's precise cross evaded the head of David Luiz, with Batshuayi able to glance the delivery past Trapp and score Marseille's first goal at the Parc des Princes since 2012.

Two goals in the space of five minutes changed the complexion of the half however as Ibrahimovic wrote his name into the history books.

Mandanda's decision to rush out and bring Ibrahimovic down allowed the striker to level while a second spot-kick four minutes later gave the hosts a half-time lead.
Aurier threatened to increase that lead when he dragged a shot across goal early in the second half but the full-back was busy at the other end soon after when he clumsily brought down Barrada.

However, after some rocky performances in recent weeks, Trapp came to the rescue with an impressive save to deny Barrada down to his right and Aurier almost made amends when he guided a header into the ground and over from a corner.

After Mandanda kept Marseille's hopes alive with a stunning save from Javier Pastore, Remy Cabella could have twice snatched a point, but he was denied superbly by Trapp before blazing over the crossbar as PSG extended their unbeaten run in the league to 18 matches.

Only Klopp or Ancelotti can clean up Rodgers's mess

    1424782_heroa.jpg

In February, the Merseyside derby draw at Goodison Park represented Brendan Rodgers's 100th league game as Liverpool manager. On Sunday evening, the same fixture, at the same venue, with the same result was also significant for the 42-year-old - it was his last in charge of the club.

The sacking had an air of inevitability about it - regardless of the scoreline against Everton, the upcoming international break and the heightened unease among supporters meant the writing had long been on the wall.

Still, the timing, it must be said, is bizzare. FSG had the opportunity to see Rodgers out the Melwood doors in the summer, but he survived the end-of-season review and was given £80 million to spend as well as the go-ahead to overhaul the coaching staff.

After a stuttering start to the new campaign, which mirrored so many old flaws from the end of 2014-15, the owners had a decision to make again, much sooner than they would have possibly anticipated. This time, they opted to twist and will have to ensure their next choice is the correct one.

The Northern Irishman is the seventh man to be hired and fired at Anfield in the last 25 years without the club winning a league title - solving that conundrum is what FSG have termed their “only driving ambition”. The new appointment, and every detail going forward, has to be geared towards Liverpool achieving that challenging aim.

Despite reports suggesting the club were warned off Jurgen Klopp, indications are the German is the preferred candidate to replace Rodgers. Carlo Ancelotti, too, is in the frame for the job. Both would immediately get the supporters back onside, with hashtags and chants already created for the former.

They represent more experienced options than Rodgers, but their managerial styles could not be more contrasting. Klopp is the tornado that sweeps in with verve, passion and the belief that just about anything is possible. Ancelotti, meanwhile, is the regal and refined sort.

Given FSG’s affinity for the unconventional, it would make sense for them to opt for the effervescence of Klopp. He has proven that he can transform a non-stellar squad into more than the sum of their parts. The bounce would be back at Melwood, as well as on the terraces.
The German’s agent, Marc Kosicke, has already verbalised his client’s interest in a job like Liverpool. In June, he remarked: “We do not only think about the top four because there are some other great clubs below them… If he goes into a stadium, feels the energy and thinks that he can make a difference here, this could be more attractive to him than going with the big deals and aim for the treble."

The club plan to announce the new manager in "a decisive and timely manner."

Whoever is named, it would be wise to remember that ultimately, Liverpool need much more than a managerial makeover: keeping the club’s best players needs to be a priority, as is recruiting more quality over quantity.

"Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool, and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it," read the club statement upon Rodgers' sacking.

The actions moving forward, starting with the instalment of the new manager, will reveal the depth of those words.

    Rodgers's sacking slammed by Monk

    garry-monk-premier-league-aston-villa-v-swansea-210315_x2pjl42tsht5146gtfx7n5vbn.jpg

Swansea City manager Garry Monk believes Liverpool 's sacking of Brendan Rodgers "doesn't make sense".

Rodgers departed the Liberty Stadium for Anfield in 2012, having led Swansea - with Monk as his captain - to promotion to the Premier League, where they thrived under the Ulsterman for a season and have since gone on to become an established force.

He almost took Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2013-14, but a failure to get over the line and a subsequent inability to recapture that form has cost him.

Rodgers was dismissed by Liverpool just hours after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Everton, but Monk believes the decision could come back to haunt them.

"I just got told on the way in," Monk said at his post-match press conference after Swansea's 2-2 draw with Tottenham. "I can't believe that, I think that's a very, very harsh decision.

"I don't think he deserved that at all, he's a top manager.

"You don't know what goes on behind closed doors, or what's been said, or anything like that, but that's a big surprise to me.

"To be honest with you, I was a bit in shock when I got told that walking into the room.

"Obviously I'll have to try and speak to him at some point.

"We don't like to see that here, he's been fantastic for us here at Swansea. For me, I can't see who else is going to do a better job for Liverpool at this moment in time.

"I've learnt so much in my time with him, especially about the management side of it. He's the one who gave me the in-depth insight into how that works, and he's been so supportive to me.

"He's a top, top man as well, and a great person, and a top manager.

"So like I said, I'm very surprised by that decision. It doesn't make sense to me to be honest with you, but like I said it's for everyone else to decide if that's right or wrong. But for me that's the wrong decision."

Benitez rues ‘two points lost’ after Atletico draw

    rafa-benitez-atletico-madrid-real-madrid-la-liga_tmbl6yvdqt3c1ebl8u6e96knk.jpg

Rafael Benitez says it was a case of “two points lost” after a late goal by Luciano Vietto saw Atletico Madrid hold Real to a 1-1 draw at Vicente Calderon on Sunday.

The Bernabeu side missed the chance to go top of La Liga, due to Villarreal's defeat to Levante, despite taking the lead after just nine minutes through Karim Benzema.

Keylor Navas saved a penalty by Antoine Grizemann before the break but an 83rd minute goal by Vietto, his first for the club, salvaged a draw, much to Benitez’s frustration.

"We lacked the second goal to finish the game. In the first half we were better. We have to give credit to Atletico because they pressured and showed fight,” he told reporters.

"We lost two points with the way the game has developed. They risked in the second half. In the first half my team played to win."

Real Madrid also saw Dani Carvajal forced off with an ankle injury before the break and Benitez says they will have to “wait and see” how bad the problem is with the defender now a doubt for Spain’s Euro 2016 qualifiers against Luxembourg and Ukraine.

Mourinho: I'll RESIGN if Chelsea players don't want me

    jose-mourinho-porto-chelsea-champions-league-29092015_1v78b7temb5ko10g4f9p5n0iuz.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says the only reason he would ever resign from his job at Stamford Bridge would be if he lost the trust of his players.

The Portuguese has come under pressure after a poor start to the season with Saturday’s loss to Southampton the Blues’ sixth defeat of the campaign.

Mourinho insisted after the game that he remains the right man for the job, despite his team languishing in 16th place, and has once again reiterated his desire to stay at the club.

"People can say what they want. I think you should go straight to the players," he told reporters.

"Get a table at Cobham next week - John Terry doesn't go to the national team, Diego Costa doesn't go, Ramires doesn't go. Ask them.

"If they tell you they don't trust me, that is the only thing that can make me resign. The only thing. But not fake sources. The players at the table."
Mourinho also insisted he was pleased with the way he was handling his current predicament and says his players will turn their current form around in time.

"In this moment it's not so easy and my feelings -- I'm so unhappy with the sport feeling of defeat but I am so happy with myself with the way I am facing this,” he added.

"Only Mother Nature can do it. They need to feel luck, they need to arrive at half-time winning 2-0, 3-0.

"They need to fly without pressure, they need to play and feel that everything is going in their favour. Not to feel this pressure, this panic, this negativity. Decisions against, unlucky, mistakes.

"They need it. Time will bring it. I don't know next match, in two matches, in three. For sure they will get that confidence back, for sure.''

Ibrahimovic becomes PSG's all time top goalscorer

    2031102_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has become Paris Saint-Germain's all-time top goalscorer after netting a double against Marseille.

The Sweden international was on target in Sunday's Ligue 1 clash to overtake club legend Pauleta as the record holder. Both goals were penalties, as he scored two within three minutes to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 half-time advantage.

Ibrahimovic, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Saturday, scored his 109th and 110th goal for PSG, taking his place at the top of PSG's charts inside just three and a half years.

Former Portugal star Pauleta achieved his record over a five-year spell, but failed to lead the capital club to a Ligue 1 title, whereas Ibrahimovic has been pivotal as the Parisians have won three championships during his time.

    Mihajlovic: I will not resign

    sinisamihajlovic-cropped_y35sf8l028pf1ss8sagfs8dde.jpg

Sinisa Mihajlovic insisted he will not walk away from AC Milan after the Serie A strugglers suffered their heaviest ever home defeat by Napoli on Sunday.

Italy international Lorenzo Insigne bagged a second-half brace as Maurizio Sarri's side routed the Rossoneri 4-0 at San Siro.

Insigne's double was sandwiched in between Allan's 13th-minute well-taken opener and Rodrigo Ely's own goal with 13 minutes to go.

Milan have now lost four of their opening seven Serie A fixtures - including two in a row - under new coach Mihajlovic, but the Serbian boss has no plans to vacate his position.

"I will no doubt receive a phone call tomorrow from the president [Silvio] Berlusconi and I will explain what happened," the former Sampdoria boss stated.

"The club as always will take their decisions, but I won't resign. I am convinced however to be able to find a solution to the problems.

"I have done it at other clubs and I can do it here. I need time, even if it is something I cannot ask for."

As for the match itself, Mihajlovic bemoaned Milan's fragile mentality, which has left the club languishing in 11th position - nine points adrift of leaders Fiorentina.

"I know it's bad to say this, but tonight we lost to the better side," Mihajlovic told the Milan Channel. "Their forwards made the difference.

"We cannot afford however to make the kind of individual errors that we made against an attack of that calibre.

"The match was put to bed after their second goal and we were unable to react. We're weak mentally and there have been too many highs and lows.

"Perhaps we need [Sigmund] Freud… since I've arrived I have been trying to work on the players' mentality. I have been speaking to them individually and as a group, trying to analyse everything. Clearly it is not that easy.

"I expected to resolve things earlier, but evidently we have to keep on working. That is the only option we have. We do work hard and well, but it’s still not enough."

Bayern have not won the title yet - Guardiola

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola urged his team to stay grounded despite opening up a seven-point lead atop the Bundesliga with a 5-1 thrashing of Borussia Dortmund.

Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski netted a double each at the Allianz Arena on Sunday before Mario Gotze added a fifth in the comprehensive win.

Guardiola insisted there was still work for his team to do, despite their 100 per cent record giving them a huge advantage over their rivals already.
"I'd like to congratulate the players. We struggled early on and didn't create many chances before the opener," he said.

"We won 5-1 but made a lot of mistakes which we need to correct. We're happy because we beat one of the best teams in Europe.

"No-one has won the German title today. We have to keep our feet on the ground."

The loss stretched Dortmund's winless run in all competitions to four games, with their form dipping after a red-hot start to the campaign.

De Bruyne hails Aguero relationship: 'I just give him the ball as much as possible'

    2031202_heroa.jpg

Manchester City new boy Kevin De Bruyne says his understanding with Sergio Aguero is going from strength to strength.

De Bruyne laid on two of Aguero's five goals against Newcastle United on Saturday, and was the only other City player on the scoresheet as Manuel Pellegrini's men came from behind to win 6-1.

The Belgium international, who moved to the Etihad Stadium for £55 million this summer, has started life at the club with four goals in his last five games and believes his partnership with Aguero is already paying dividends.

"It's going very well right now," he told reporters after Saturday's game. "Of course there are moments that I'm still looking to do better, but I have no complaints about my start at City.

"It's nice to switch positions with Sergio and in the second half you could see that this was going better and better. Now we have to keep that up."

All five of Aguero's goals came in a breathless 23-minute, 43-second spell, breaking a Premier League record in the process, and De Bruyne says there is one simple tactic to be employed when the Argentine is in this form.

"It's great to play with him and when he's in a flow like this, you always try to give him the ball as much as possible," he added. "There's a very big chance that he'll score."

"It's obvious that Sergio is a world class striker. He's very opportunistic in front of goal and everything went right for him."

Aguero may have stolen the headlines but De Bruyne's goal had the Etihad crowd in awe; the 24-year-old's deft volley from Jesus Navas' right-wing cross looped over a stranded Tim Krul and nestled in the far corner.

The former Wolfsburg man played down the skill involved, even if his face during the interview displayed his pride at pulling it off.

"It was my intention to shoot," he said. "It wasn't easy, because I had to turn and take it out of the air. Of course you need a bit of luck with this, but I tried and did pretty well."

Benzema 'fed up' of Benitez substituting him

Karim Benzema is "fed up" of being substituted by Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez but refrained from criticising the Santiago Bernabeu boss.

The France international had opened the scoring for Madrid in a 1-1 draw against rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday but, for the fifth time in six La Liga starts this season, he was taken off before full-time.

"Substitutions are what the coach decides, I'm just there to help my team-mates," Benzema told AS.

"It's true I'm fed up of being taken off. I'm calm and will continue to work so I'm not always subtituted. He took me off to get a result, for defensive reasons.

"It's true that the electronic board always shows the No.9. Ask Benitez why that is."

Spanish media followed up on the 27-year-old's suggestion and Benitez explained that Mateo Kovacic replaced the former Lyon forward in the 77th minute to "balance the team" - a plan which didn't work as Atletico snatched a draw six minutes later via substitute Luciano Vietto.

"Benzema did well, but I substituted him because we needed to freshen things up on the wing," Benitez told reporters..

"With Gareth Bale's speed we were able to play between different areas of the pitch and with Cristiano Ronaldo up forward we kept up our attacks.

"We balanced the team and maintained our attacking punch."

Kaka replaces Coutinho in Brazil squad

    philippecoutinho-cropped_1l4ic56h1qvg01agbc6gzboh90.jpg

Philippe Coutinho has been ruled out of Brazil's two World Cup qualifying fixtures and replaced by veteran Kaka, the Brazil's football association (CBF) has announced.

Details of Coutinho's injury were not disclosed after the Liverpool playmaker completed 90 minutes in Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Everton.Coutinho's absence, though, has paved the way for Kaka to return to Brazil.

Orlando City midfielder Kaka featured in Brazil's international friendlies against Costa Rica and United States last month, but the 33-year-old was overlooked by Dunga for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela.

Brazil will kick-off their road to Russia 2018 at Copa America champions Chile in Santiago on Thursday, before they return home to host Venezuela in Fortaleza five days later.

:yes:Klopp perfect manager for Liverpool - Redknapp

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Jurgen Klopp would be the perfect replacement for Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.

The Premier League side parted company with Rodgers on Sunday and Klopp is one of the favourites for the job alongside Carlo Ancelotti.

Klopp has been out of work since leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2014-15 campaign and Redknapp feels the German coach has something special about him that makes him ideal for the job.

"I think that Klopp has that aura about him," he told Sky Sports . "He has that special something that some managers have.

"I think he could walk into Anfield and the fans would like that. I've got a feeling that he would be the perfect fit for them. The fact that he's available now makes me think they'll go for Klopp.

"Obviously he'll want to bring his own staff in. It's difficult because you do need someone who understands the club and knows the fabric of how the club works. But I would certainly look at Klopp.

"The fact they’ve sacked Rodgers now - when there are lots of other clubs struggling and looking at managers - makes me feel that it might happen. I think he would be a great signing for them, I really do."

Liverpool currently sit 10th in the Premier League table with 12 points from eight games, trailing leaders Manchester City by six points.
