I fell out of love with football under Van Gaal - Rafael

    rafael-manchester-united_1x26d9wqf3dlc1drlltcs75cgq.jpg

Former Manchester United defender Rafael says he did not enjoy playing football during his time under Louis van Gaal. The Brazilian full-back left Old Trafford for Lyon in a reported £2.5 million deal in August after failing to work his way into the Dutch coach’s preferred line-up.

Rafael, 25, made just 11 appearances for United last term and remains disappointed at how his seven-year spell in Manchester came to an end, despite finding regular football in Ligue 1.

“Consistency is everything in football. You get games, you feel better,” he said.
“You enjoy it more and your fitness is better. When you’ve not played for a long time it’s very hard for the player.

“When Van Gaal arrived I could see I wasn’t in the plan. When you’re a player you can feel it, you can see that.“To be honest I didn’t really enjoy playing when Van Gaal was there.

“I like to enjoy myself, to try things and do stuff. Last year I wasn’t doing that.“The 10 games I played I thought I played very well apart from Leicester [a 5-3 away defeat]. It’s hard to know.“I had some choices to go in England, but in the end I wanted to try something different. It’s good to challenge yourself.”

Rafael admits he understands why Red Devils fans are calling for a more adventurous style than the possession based strategy Van Gaal currently uses.
“Everyone is different. Results matter so if they can win the league it will be a different story.

“I watch them play and I’ve heard some things as well... But it’s hard. Football is for the fans. They want to see good football.”

Hodgson: England will be hard to beat at Euro 2016

    royhodgson-cropped_abcnlx5txo6n13qb3ykgh9y8n.jpg

England manager Roy Hodgson believes his side will be hard to beat at next year's European Championship in France. Hodgson's England were the only side out of 53 nations to qualify for Euro 2016 with a 100 per cent winning record.

The Three Lions only conceded three goals in ten games and will be seeded among the best teams in Europe which puts them in a good position to progress from the group stages.

And Hodgson believes he has built a team that will be force to be reckoned with.
"We're not an easy team to score past and beat, which is good news for the future, and I think we have some very good quality players in our front six, all of whom could win a game for us," Hodgson said.

"So in terms of the make-up of our team I think we have reasons for optimism, but the Euros are a tough one to win, there are lots of teams out there who look good on paper as well. Which team in the month of June is able to pull it off?

"The beauty is that this good run of form has put us amongst the top seeds, there was only five places, so it was good to get one of those five. So to be in that top pool and avoid five other very strong teams is obviously a very big advantage.

"And I am reasonably confident that we are hard to beat. But of course, in the Euros, even in an expanded Euros like this one, you get a lot of very good teams and you certainly get a lot of teams that are hard to beat.

"Even if you go down to the so-called weakest pool, there are lots of teams in there who are a quite capable of beating the top seeds on their day. Witness Ireland against Germany, and that was in a qualifier not even a friendly.

"This is what we know we have there for us to confront, but it is still nicer to know that the top seeded teams we will avoid at least in the group stage."
The draw for the group stages takes place in Paris on Saturday.

Lukaku only needs 12 hours rest! - Martinez

    romelulukakurobertomartinez-cropped_1tzh7dfugunxc1vdj2oifyi7md.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez said he has no plans to rest Romelu Lukaku, insisting players of his age only need 12 hours to recuperate from matches.

Lukaku scored his 50th Everton goal in 100 appearances on Monday and has established himself as one of the first names on Martinez' team-sheet.The 22-year-old Belgium international has started every single one of Everton's 19 games in all competitions this season, scoring 14 goals in the process.

And Martinez admitted he does not fear burning out Lukaku."When you are 22-years-old and enjoying your football, you can't wait for the next game," Martinez said.

"The players you need to be careful with are those around 28, 29 or 30. We have a few of those, and you have to measure their recovery times really well.

"But players who are 21 or 22 can recover in 12 hours because they've got so much energy."I'm happy to keep players like Romelu, Ross Barkley, Gerard Deulofeu and John Stones in the team together, it is a matter of keeping the momentum going.

"It is different if they pick up a knock or a strain but until that happens as long as they are playing well they can carry on.

"Burnout comes when you are not playing well and still forced to play. That makes you play with pressure and that can be tough."

Cole: World's best Mourinho can mastermind unlikely title tilt

    joe-cole_hwrk1mgsv9tz13jabs3hziawn.jpg

Joe Cole believes it is not beyond Jose Mourinho - whom he described as "the best manager in the world" - to steer Chelsea to back-to-back Premier League titles, despite heading into this weekend 17 points adrift of leaders Leicester City.

Having finished last season eight points clear of nearest rivals Manchester City, Chelsea's 2015-16 struggles have been well documented, with Mourinho's men just two points above the bottom three after 15 games.

Intense speculation over the Portuguese's future continues, but Cole - who won the Premier League twice under Mourinho - has confidence he can trigger a change in fortunes to such an extent that Chelsea could finish as champions again. "Anything is possible, and that's why we watch football," Cole told Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday.

"You can't rule them out as champions…that team could beat everyone from now until the end of the season.

"I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it's football. It'll be interesting in the next few weeks. The fans haven't turned, they're right behind the manager and the chairman."The main thing you've got to think about is you've got the best manager in the world there…fact.

"That's not down to opinion, he's the most decorated over the different leagues.
"For Chelsea to move forward, you've got to stick with the manager and let him do what he does best. I don't think anyone can dispute his record and I'm sure he'll be relishing turning it around.

Atletico Madrid respond to Diego Costa return talk

    2376152_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo appears to have ruled out the possibility of Diego Costa returning to the club in January.

Costa, who was recently dropped from the Chelsea starting XI against Tottenham and has struggled for goals so far this season, suggested he was open to a possible move back to Madrid in future, citing former Blues and Atleti team-mate Filipe Luis as an example of a player following the same route.

"I don't know if I'll go back to Atletico," he told Onda Cero. "Life always takes plenty of twists and turns. Look where Filipe Luis is."The truth is that I want the best for Atletico, I always cheer them on from afar."

But, attending the Sports Gala in San Sebastian de los Reyes in Madrid, Cerezo suggested there was little chance of a move for the Chelsea striker when the transfer window opens.

He said: "It's complicated for Atletico to make signings this winter."

When asked about Costa leaving the door open to a return, Cerezo said: "Then close the door, because it's cold."

Benitez: Benzema is an excellent person

    rafael-benitez-cropped_1fh3ykfgs42no1mjqbd625fdb1.jpg

Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez has described Karim Benzema as an "excellent person" after another troubled week for the France international.

Benzema was suspended from international duty by the French Football Federation on Thursday pending the outcome of a legal investigation into a sex-tape plot involving les Bleus team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

The 27-year-old has been charged with complicity in an attempt to blackmail and participating in a criminal conspiracy. He denies the charges.

Despite his off-field troubles, Benzema has had a wonderful week on it, netting twice in the 4-1 victory against Getafe last weekend and then grabbing a hat-trick in the 8-0 midweek Champions League mauling of Malmo.

And Benitez has backed the former Lyon man to come through his current problems.

"What concerns me in the France suspension is Karim, we support him 100%. He's an excellent person and an essential player for us," Benitez told a media conference ahead of Sunday's trip to Villarreal.
Gareth Bale was rested against Malmo, but the Welshman will return at El Madrigal alongside Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. Central defender Sergio Ramos is also in line to make his comeback following a shoulder injury.

"The BBC is fundamental to us," added Benitez. "Bale has contributed since his arrival, giving us goals and assists. He provides more assists than anyone."

Much has been made of apparent discord in the Madrid dressing room under Benitez, but Ronaldo this week backed the former Inter and Liverpool boss, stating he was doing a "great job" and talking up their personal relationship.
Benitez said: "The atmosphere in the dressing room is very good, everybody gets on, people insist that things aren't good, but I insist that they are.
"Ronaldo's performance have always been good and now that he is more effective, I speak less."

Madrid start the weekend in third place in La Liga, four points behind leaders Barcelona.

Villarreal are two places and six points behind Madrid, and Benitez is not expecting an easy game.

"The team reacted well after the Clasico defeat against teams from a certain level," he said. "Villarreal is a litmus test for us because they have a good side with a great coach."

Bayern Munich 2-0 Ingolstadt: Lewandowski and Lahm fire hosts back to winning ways

    2390732_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich ensured their place at the top of the Bundesliga table over the winter break by overcoming a plucky Ingolstadt side with a 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena.

Pep Guardiola's side suffered their first top-flight defeat of the season at Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, but secured a hard-earned three points to spend the mid-season break at the summit for a record fifth straight year.

Ingolstadt entered the game with just two losses from their eight games on the road this season, and that confidence showed in Munich as they frustrated the champions with a well-organised display.

Bayern were denied an opener midway through the first half when Lewandowski saw his shot cleared off the line, but Manuel Neuer was forced into a trio of saves before the interval to ensure his side went in level.

However, the Bavarian giants upped their game in the second half and finally broke through thanks to Lewandowski's 15th Bundesliga goal of the season, before Lahm added a second with 15 minutes remaining.

Ingolstadt could have taken the lead inside the first minute when Neuer's sloppy clearance fell straight at the feet of Stefan Lex, but Lukas Hinterseer was offside from his attempted throughball.

Bayern dominated possession but, with Ingolstadt pressing high up the pitch, they did not muster a shot on target until the 25th minute.

Joshua Kimmich clipped a pass in behind the defence for Lewandowski to chase, but the striker's lob over the onrushing Ramazan Ozcan was cleared off the line by Romain Bregerie.

There was more action inside Bayern's defensive third than that of Ingolstadt, and Ralph Hasenhuttl's men pushed for the opener as the interval approached.

Following a neat passage of play, Pascal Gross' shot was blocked by Lahm, and Roger's volley from the subsequent corner forced Neuer down to his bottom corner.

The Bayern goalkeeper was called upon twice more in quick succession, racing off his line to thwart Lex before parrying a 25-yard strike from Hinterseer away from goal.

Guardiola's side showed more urgency after the restart but Lahm and Lewandowski were denied by the impressive Ozcan before the hour mark.

Bayern remained vulnerable to the break and required Neuer to bail them out when Mathew Leckie released Lex, but they were finally ahead in the 65th minute.

Jerome Boateng's brilliant pass from deep cut through the Ingolstadt defence, with Lewandowski latching onto it and rounding Ozcan before slotting into the vacant net.

Ingolstadt were unable to mount a response and they fell two behind with 75 minutes on the clock when Lahm added the finishing touch to a quick counter-attack, sweeping home Thomas Muller's square pass to temporarily extend Bayern's advantage at the summit to eight points.
