De Bruyne: Man City's best still to come

    kevindebruyne-cropped_1pqupye3fj2c31syw97puhqf2p.jpg

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne says his side have not yet hit top gear this season, and believes that consistency will be more important than three points against Arsenal this weekend.

The Belgium international has hit the ground running since joining City in a club-record deal worth £55 million in the summer, scoring nine goals in all competitions in 17 appearances.

City are currently third in the table ahead of Monday's showdown with second-placed Arsenal, and could move top of the table with a win.

De Bruyne, though, believes City are yet to peak and believes that the key to winning the title will be consistenly achieving a higher level of play.

"In the end, the game is important if you win it and then keep on winning," De Bruyne told Sky Sports.

"If you win against Arsenal, then lose the other one it does not really matter. So I think the most important things is to get a couple of wins and then see what is happening with the rest.

"Leicester are doing really well at the moment, playing really good and hopefully for them they will continue this form.

"But it is going to be difficult as it is a hard Premier League. I think the other teams are also there and the distance between fifth and sixth [and the top] is not that big.

"So that is why it is important to have a run of a couple of games where you come out winning, so you can make a break and put pressure on the other ones."

De Bruyne admits that he does not feel City have played their best football throughout the season, which he feels makes their position in the table even more promising.

"Sometimes it is not necessary [for City to perform at their peak], so it depends on how the game goes," the Belgium international added.

"If you are already winning 3-0 or 4-0, you can obviously put the brakes on a bit because afterwards you have a lot of games left so you can save a lot of energy.

"But also sometimes we were in difficult positions and then came back, so that showed fighting spirit, but we can play even better.

"I would say we are doing good because maybe we have not played at our best level yet."

Pires: Sky is the limit for Arsenal this season

    arsenewenger-cropped_yqer0rvt3lwzx6hd3arr5gs.jpg

Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires believes manager Arsene Wenger remains the best man for the job as the club bid to win the Premier League.

Arsenal have not won the league since 2003-04 but the Londoners are in contention again to end their drought this season, with Wenger's men in second and only two points adrift of leaders Leicester City.

Pires spent six years at Arsenal under Wenger, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cup titles, and since the Frenchman left for Villarreal in 2006, the club have only won two FA Cup titles. However, the Gunners icon has backed Wenger and Arsenal to finally secure elusive Premier League success.

"He is the man, he is the manager. He knows everything about football, and has built something with Arsenal for a long, long time," Pires told Omnisport.

"So the philosophy with Wenger is very good. Arsenal play very good. So yes, this is most important."And of course I hope for Wenger that he will win the title at the end of this season."

Pires believes his hopes could be realised, with Arsenal flying high this season and in a promising position ahead of Monday's showdown with fellow title hopefuls Manchester City.

"When you look at the table, we [Arsenal] are in a good position," Pires said."Anything is possible this season because Arsenal have played well this season and are doing well.

"Next Monday they have a big, big game when they host Manchester City. But Arsenal, yeah, they can win the title at the end of this season because; they have a very good team, and very good spirit.

"They have good technique... Unfortunately we have a lot of players injured, but I think it's not a problem because the squad is very big. I hope, and I wish, that Arsenal win the [Premier League] title."No one should rule Arsenal out of the Champions League, either, despite a tough draw against holders Barcelona in the last 16.

"The draw for the Champions League... everybody knows it's difficult. When you play Barcelona or Bayern Munich you know it's very difficult and is going to be a very tough game," Pires said.

"But I repeat the same. When you talk to everyone about football, I think anything is possible. Of course Barcelona are one of the best teams in Europe. But I believe in Arsenal for this game, yes."

Messi cannot be stopped by a single defender - Nadal

    2390892_heroa.jpg

Former Barcelona defender Miguel Angel Nadal says no single player is capable of shutting down Lionel Messi in one-one-one situations alone.

The Catalan's talisman was in imperious form last term as Barcelona clinched the treble, and will be in action once more at the weekend against River Plate in the Club World Cup final in which Luis Enrique's men will look to clinch their fifth title of 2015.

And Nadal, who is a veteran of Barcelona's 1992 'Dream Team' and the side that lost the Intercontinental Cup to Sao Paulo, thinks the unpredictability a fit-again Messi will give to his side will see enjoy the edge in Sunday's clash.

"He has something special, he is unpredictable," Nadal told Goal.

"A defender never knows when to go for the ball. It is impossible to stop him one-on-one.

"When you take two steps, he does four steps, and that makes him even more unpredictable. Defenders need help from other defenders, while others must help cover him.

"There's no single defender able to stop him. Barcelona are the favourites, I predict a 2-0 win. But if Messi and Neymar are on the pitch, I'll add two more goals. 4-0."

Turning his attention to the Barcelona defence, Nadal praised centre-back duo Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano, but warns that the club cannot go along without seeking adequete replacements for the future.

A number of lapses in La Liga have recently cost the Spanish champions points and allowed Atletico Madrid to pull level at the top, and Nadal is urging the side to avoid complacency, adding: "Even the favourites can't win without concentration and running.

"I think Pique and Mascherano have lots of years left at the highest level, but it is very important to bring in good new defenders able to compete with them for a starting place and keep the level high."

Bartomeu says Barcelona's financial sustainability is key

    josepbartomeu-cropped_6od2ego9rpn2136gs5gh1uv2g.jpg

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said making the Spanish and European champions financially sustainable is his biggest concern.Luis Enrique's Barca continue to dominate on the field, and will contest the Club World Cup final against River Plate in Japan on Sunday.

But Bartomeu believes ensuring the financial stability of the club is crucial to maintaining on field success.

"We have to make money to compete with the big European clubs. This is the great challenge for the club," Bartomeu said to Spanish news outlet SPORT.
"Our goal in the next six years in office is getting the club to be sustainable. In football, it already is. We won the treble and did not lose money.

"But Fifa only pays €4.5million to the winner of the Club World Cup, which seems insufficient. That is one of the things we must talk to [Fifa] about."

Speaking of world football's governing body, Bartomeu believes the punishment of his club - a 12-month transfer ban and a fine of 450,000 Swiss Francs in 2014 - was misguided.

"The punishment only ended up hurting our grassroots," Bartomeu said."We didn't sign anyone and we won the treble."The transfer ban only served to highlight the importance of Lionel Messi to the Champions League title holders, who Bartomeu said follows a long line of world-class talent.

"Johan Cruyff, as a player, was great and recognised state wide, as a coach, he stood as a benchmark in Europe, as did Ronaldinho as a player," Bartomeu said.
"Then, with Messi, Barca is already the number one on the planet and with Neymar, continuity and the future is secured.

"My wish is that the club is admired throughout the world, a global club. [Michel] Platini once told me that when he played football, the club was not a global reference. With luck, that has changed now."

Crystal Palace agree deal with American investors

    crystalpalacecrest-cropped_6e5kwn7dbivv16pxjiqjee6e4.jpg

Crystal Palace have confirmed that they have agreed a deal with American tycoons David Blitzer and Josh Harris, with the pair taking a stake in the Premier League club.

The duo have been in talks with Palace for over a year and will now join chairman Steve Parish in control at Selhurst Park after the deal was announced on Friday.

Blitzer and Harris have a history of sports investment and currently co-own the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils in the NHL.

"The deal will see chairman Steve Parish, Josh Harris and David Blitzer take control of the club in a general partnership structure," the statement read.

"They will be joined by a number of other investors in a limited partnership. All shareholders have agreed an initial 50 million pound injection of capital for the development of the stadium, with more to follow.

"This will give fans the first-class facilities they deserve."

Blitzer and Harris, meanwhile, expressed their pride at becoming part of a club with a "storied legacy" and a "bright future".

"We couldn't be more excited to be joining the Crystal Palace family. We were drawn to the club's rich history, exciting brand of football, strong leadership and, above all, its passionate fans," they said.

"We've had the great pleasure of getting to know Steve and have the utmost respect for him and his partners, Stephen, Jeremy and Martin.

"We look forward to supporting Steve in his role as the operating co-owner and leader of the club. Crystal Palace has a storied legacy, a bright future and we're proud to become a part of it".

Palace sit sixth in the Premier League table after 16 games, with their next test coming away to Stoke City on Saturday.

Martial pips Bellerin to scoop Golden Boy award

    anthonymartial-cropped_vishukgaqpbk1mo9dbx0u27pg.jpg

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has won the 2015 Golden Boy award that recognises the best young player in Europe, seeing off Kingsley Coman and Hector Bellerin for the award.

Launched by Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport in 2003, the Golden Boy is restricted to players under the age of 21, and is voted for by writers from 30 newspapers across the continent.

The 20-year-old became the most expensive teenager in football history when he secured a September deadline-day move to United from Monaco.

He has scored six times in 19 appearances to date for Louis van Gaal's team, while also making the breakthrough to earn full international honours with France this season.

Martial succeeds Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling as the Golden Boy winner. Previous victors include Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli, Mario Gotze, Isco and Paul Pogba.

Mourinho will NOT take a break & will remain in England

    2419232_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has revealed that he will not be taking a break from management and will continue to live in London following his dismissal as Chelsea boss on Thursday.

Following a disastrous 2015-16 so far, in which the reigning champions have slumped to nine defeats in 16 Premier League games, Blues owner Roman Abramovich acted to relieve the Portuguese coach of his duties.

And while Guus Hiddink remains the favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis, Mourinho, in a statement released by his Los Angeles based agents CAA, has indicated that he is "not tired" and will not be taking an extended break from football management.

“He will not be taking a sabbatical, he isn’t tired, he doesn’t need it, he is very positive, and is already looking forward," the statement read.

Revealing plans for his immediate future, the statement indicated that Mourinho will continue to live in London and will be seen attending games, though the Portuguese will stay away from high profile contests in order to dampen any speculation.

“Because of his love of football, you will see Jose at football grounds working and supporting friends. He will not be attending any high-profile games because he wants to discourage any speculation about his future," the statement continued.
“Jose will remain living in London and hopes he and his family will be given the opportunity to do this privately.”

Lloris: There is no panic at Tottenham

    hugolloris-cropped_1ptppivwz84fr1iebjtxys48jq.jpg

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris said no one at White Hart Lane is panicking ahead of the club's trip to Southampton.

Newcastle United snapped Tottenham's 14-match unbeaten streak via a 2-1 win last week after Ayoze Perez scored a stoppage-time winner in London.

French goalkeeper Lloris, however, insists his team-mates remain upbeat heading into Saturday's clash at St Mary's."It was positive in the dressing room after Newcastle," Lloris told reporters.

"We had a chat together and tried to understand what happened in the second half. At half-time everyone was positive and wanted to win the game but at the end, we didn’t respond."I'm not worried about the Newcastle game. It was an opportunity but we missed it.

"There will be other opportunities and the only thing that matters is to be where we want to be at the end of the season - and the season is still very young."Lloris added: "There is no panic but we all know we need to get back to winning ways.

"We demand a lot of effort from each other and we’ve had a good week to prepare."

Tottenham can win titles - Pochettino

    mauriciopochettino-cropped_869ixt8lqhv31e7b9v950r2a7.jpg

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino is confident the club have built the foundation to "win some titles" in the future.

Pochettino's side boasts some of the most promising English youngsters, with the likes of Dele Alli and Eric Dier establishing themselves as key figures in the club's starting XI.

Tottenham - fifth in the table - have only lost twice in the Premier League this season and are among the clubs battling for top-four finish and a place in the Champions League.

And Pochettino believes the White Hart Lane outfit have the potential to compete for titles in the near future. "It is difficult to be consistent when you start," he told reporters.

"At Tottenham after 18 months we have put the basis for sure in the future to win some titles. We are sure because the basis is very strong.

"We have a very young squad that can only improve for the future. We only need time. We have the youngest team in the Premier League so sometimes we have to expect that we have bad days, like we had Sunday [a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United].

"It is important to analyse and say, 'Hey, we need to learn about that and move on quick' because football doesn't wait for you."We take a risk to have a younger player in the squad so we need to help them a lot. That is important to be consistent.

"We have been consistent from the beginning but different moments will be tough for them and now they need to have the tools to move forward."Tottenham will be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to face Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday.

Iniesta is the best player in the world - Sampaoli

    andresiniesta-cropped_9p6tfnzs8h4i1i0lorgrkhnfi.jpg

Jorge Sampaoli has lauded Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta as the best player in the world ahead of the Catalans' Club World Cup final clash against River Plate.

Iniesta has been in great form for Barca this season as the treble winners sit atop of La Liga after 15 games, with Luis Enrique's side now turning their attention to the Club World Cup in Japan.

Iniesta was instrumental in their 3-0 semi-final win over Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao on Thursday, setting up Luis Suarez for the team's second of the match as his side remain on course to secure their fifth trophy of 2015.

And with the debate of the world's best usually between the winners of the past seven World Player of the Year awards, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Chile coach Sampaoli believes people are consistently overlooking Iniesta.
"Andres Iniesta is the best player in the world," he told Locura Deportiva.

"Andres is one of the best in understanding the game, and he powers the rest of the team."Messi is a complete player, and he can finish a game himself. Or Cristiano, with different characteristics. One can name plenty.

"Undoubtedly those complete players, like the three Barcelona have at the moment [Messi, Neymar and Suarez], understand each other and have a good partnership on the field, will score 183 goals and win you everything. "But this is a rare occurrence and does not have much to do with the manager, but the characteristics of the players that are there.

"Andres or Xavi are players that, beyond their capabilities, have a great understanding of the game and lift the rest of the team."Iniesta has the chance to win his 26th piece of silverware as a Barca player in Sunday's Club World Cup final with River Plate.

IN FULL: Jose Mourinho's first statement since Chelsea sacking

    2399522_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has released his first statement following his dismissal as Chelsea manager on Thursday, indicating that he will remain living in London and is not "tired" or looking for a break from football.

In the statement, released in conjunction with the CAA agency based in Los Angeles, Mourinho indicated that he is looking forward to returning to work and drew parallels with the success he enjoyed after leaving Chelsea in 2007.

Read the statement in full below:

“Jose Mourinho is pleased that he returned to Chelsea football club because he was able to give the fans another Premier League title, which they had not won for many years. He is immensely proud of his eight trophies at Chelsea, and thanks the fans for all their support throughout his two spells at the club.

“During his career, Jose has sometimes chosen to leave a club, but only at Chelsea has the club decided that he should leave.

“Each time represents for him the end of a cycle, and the opportunity to start a new one. José hopes that his future after Chelsea this time will be as successful as when he left the club in 2007.“He will not be taking a sabbatical, he isn’t tired, he doesn’t need it, he is very positive, and is already looking forward.

“Jose will not speak about his current situation for the foreseeable future. He asks the media to respect this decision.”

    OFFICIAL: Chelsea appoint Hiddink

    2423402_heroa.jpg

Guus Hiddink has been appointed manager at Chelsea until the end of the season, the club have confirmed.

The defending Premier League champions parted company with Jose Mourinho on Thursday with the club 16th in the table and just one point clear of the relegation zone.

Chelsea have won just four of their 16 league fixtures so far this season and a 2-1 loss at leaders Leicester City on Monday proved the final straw. The Dutchman will be present for Saturday's meeting with Sunderland but Steve Holland and Eddie Newton will take charge of first-team affairs.

"I am excited to return to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment. However, I am sure we can all turn this season around," Hiddink said in a statement."I am looking forward to working with the players and staff at this great club and especially renewing my wonderful relationship with the Chelsea fans."

Hiddink was previously appointed on an interim basis following the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2008-09 and guided the club to FA Cup glory. The 69-year-old has since coached Turkey, Anzhi and Netherlands.

IN FULL: Chelsea statement on Hiddink appointment

    2420072_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have appointed Guus Hiddink to replace Jose Mourinho on a short-term basis following the latter's sacking, issuing a statement confirming the news on Saturday.

The Dutchman, who previously took control of the Blues in 2009 on an interim basis, will be in the stands when the club take on Sunderland on Saturday, and his first game in charge will come against Watford on Boxing Day.

Read Chelsea's statement, in full, on Hiddink below.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm Guus Hiddink has been appointed first-team manager until the end of the season.

"The owner and the Board welcome back a coach with a wealth of top-level experience and success, including his previous spell with the club in 2009 when we lifted the FA Cup.

"Mr Abramovich and the Board believe that Guus has what it takes to get the best out of our talented squad.

"Guus said: 'I am excited to return to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment. However, I am sure we can all turn this season around.

"‘I am looking forward to working with the players and staff at this great club and especially renewing my wonderful relationship with the Chelsea fans.'

"The Dutchman will be at Stamford Bridge for today’s match but Steve Holland will take control of team matters for the game alongside Eddie Newton, who will now take on the role of assistant first-team coach.

"Steve has been an important and influential member of the coaching staff since 2009, while Eddie is Chelsea through and through, having served us as a player and a coach, re-joining the club in 2012 and helping us win the Champions League.

"Guus took temporary charge of Chelsea in February 2009, losing just one league game as we recovered from a poor first half of the season to finish third in the Premier League, guaranteeing Champions League football for the next campaign and signing off in style thanks to a 2-1 FA Cup win over Everton at Wembley.

"That role was combined with being coach of Russia, one of six international posts he has held during a coaching career which has spanned three decades.

"Guus’s first managerial job was in his homeland with PSV, a club he had represented during a 15-year playing career. As coach, he lifted three league titles and the European Cup in 1988. Three more followed during a second stint there between 2002 and 2006, with the intervening years seeing him coach in Turkey and Spain as well as lead the Dutch, South Korean and Australian national teams.

"As South Korea coach, he led them to a stunning third place at the 2002 World Cup on home soil, one place better than with the Netherlands four years earlier.

"Having taken the Russian job in 2006, Guus led them to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 before taking the reins at Chelsea on a temporary basis in early 2009. A 2-1 win at Aston Villa in his first game set the tone for the remainder of the season, and it took a last-minute Andres Iniesta strike on a controversial night to deny the Blues a place in the Champions League final.

"Guus’s first stay in west London ended well, however, with the whole of Stamford Bridge singing his name following our final home game of the season and the fans unveiling a huge ‘thank you’ banner at Wembley prior to the FA Cup final, in which we came from behind to win.

"Since then, Guus has coached Turkey and the Netherlands, as well as spending 18 months at Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia, where he signed Willian from Shakhtar Donetsk."
