correct me if i am wrong since i am not an architect so i can be wrong too but to my knowledge there are certain design principles such as rhythm, balance, emphasis, harmony,(can't remember exactly) which architects use in their designs and i don't think an ordinary guy knows about these things. therefore designing a house by oneself will going to be a complete disaster. without even a proper spacial planing and stuff how the house going to be practical. i believe it is wiser to consult a "qualified and well experienced" architect when designing a house. to get the maximum outcome from the architect the client should clearly describe his needs and what he has in mind and be flexible at same time as some times you can't have both rawla and kada at the same time.

I believe it's not necessary to obtain an architect's opinion, particularly if the house in not overly big. But by all means if there's one whom you can afford, it's ok. However, if you opt to not consult an architect, you must have a good knowledge of how the house will look like at the end.
You must do your own studies, but on the plus side you'd know exactly what your final ideas and requirements are, much better than getting them diluted by a third party's views.
However, the nitty gritties of the structure (beams, support beams, placing of towers etc) have to be done with consultation of a professional.
Who says you can't have both rawla and kaenda? Try using a straw
