Sri Lankan Government to Start investing on Solar energy says close personal. They are due to bring down over Rs.100 Million worth of solar panels, Inverters and solar meters for Domestic and Factory usage.

What are your thoughts Elakiri Members! I hope they completely stop Hydro power Stations so this country will start to get its Glory back with out using ugly generators !

The SLSEA would establish the first ever grid connected solar energy park in Baruthaknda of Hambantota, which also promises to be the first solar energy park in Asia. This is constructed with the grants of the Government of Japan and the Government of Korea. The total capacity of the project is 900 kW and amounts to Rs2,102.13 () million. The Japanese component amounts to Rs1,449.75 () million and the Korean component amounts to Rs652.39 () million. The project spans an extent of 20 acres of the 50 acre energy park area demarcated for the purpose.

The goal of the project is to provide clean energy through solar power generation. The project is estimated to generate 558,600 kWh per annum and this is capable of offsetting 860 tonnes of CO2.

The performances of this project would greatly eliminate the risks of pioneering project developers, lending agencies and equity investors and would undoubtedly spark off the commercial scale solar power development in Sri Lanka. Being the first of its kind, the project will provide most of the knowledge required to operate a commercial scale solar power generation project.

Wind and Solar are considered as Energy sources and NOT Power sources. But you can say Solar energy can stored in batteries. But imagine size of solar panels and batteries if you need to power up Electric Iron or small AC. The cost is very high and batteries decay after installation (75% of initial capacity after 1 year).

The actual problem is there is no efficient method to store electrical energy. (Tesla is trying best)

No machn this is a totally different scenario the Solar energy that is taken by the panels that are installed on houses will be in grid with CEB or LECO companies so there is no need of batteries for storing the energy. the power you feed to the companies will be deducted from your monthly bill.

Then what do they need 20 acres of land for?

Net Metering. But at 6.30PM - 9.30PM Diesel and Coal power plants are going on full capacity.
