Southampton 3-1 Newcastle: Magpies edge closer to relegation

    2979762_heroa.jpg

Newcastle United lurched a step closer to relegation from the Premier League with their ninth consecutive away defeat in a 3-1 loss at Southampton on Saturday.
Rafael Benitez's men travelled to St Mary's in desperate need of a result after last weekend's dramatic 3-2 reverse at Norwich City left them six points adrift of safety.

But the league's second-bottom side produced another substandard performance on their travels as Southampton eased to a routine win that keeps Ronald Koeman's side firmly in European contention.

It took Southampton only four minutes to open the scoring as Shane Long was allowed the space to break into the area and find the net with a confident low finish.

Newcastle never threatened an equaliser and, after clinging on for much of the first half, fell 2-0 behind when Graziano Pelle bent an effort into the bottom-right corner.

And a comfortable victory was wrapped up 10 minutes into the second half courtesy of Victor Wanyama's first goal of the season, leaving Newcastle with six games to overhaul the six-point gap to Norwich despite a fine consolation from Andros Townsend.

Long needed less than five minutes to break the deadlock, picking up the ball in midfield and waltzing into the Newcastle box before slotting into the bottom-left corner.

Southampton dominated play for almost all of the first half but struggled to really test Karl Darlow despite Newcastle affording the hosts plenty of opportunity to do so.But Koeman's men were not left to rue their profligacy as Pelle capitalised on more poor Newcastle defending with a curling low effort in the 38th minute.

Daryl Janmaat's slip allowed Wanyama to collect Sadio Mane's pass and break down the left and cross, with Long teeing up Pelle - who had the time to recover his composure after falling over - to pick his spot and give Newcastle a mountain to climb.

Janmaat then limped off through injury to be replaced by Siem de Jong as another miserable half ended with more problems for Benitez.Steven Taylor was taken off after half-time with Jamaal Lascelles coming on in his place, but the change failed to prevent Southampton from extending their lead as Newcastle were punished for falling asleep at a set-piece.

Slack marking allowed Mane to steal a march from a short corner, with Wanyama firing in the rebound after Jose Fonte's effort from the Senegal international's low delivery had been blocked by Darlow.

Ayoze Perez and Townsend finally forced former Newcastle goalkeeper Fraser Forster into action before the latter cut in from the right and found the top-left corner with a fierce 65th-minute strike that ultimately mattered little.

Swansea 1-0 Chelsea: Sigurdsson ends Hiddink's unbeaten run

    gylfisigurdsson-cropped_1eglpnq4qpbc116yrfag17oxmw.jpg

Chelsea suffered their first Premier League defeat since the appointment of Guus Hiddink as they lost 1-0 at Swansea City on Saturday.

Hiddink replaced Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in December and has successfully guided Chelsea into the top half following a disastrous start to their title defence.

However, in the first match since Antonio Conte was confirmed as Mourinho's permanent successor, it was the Welsh club who celebrated reaching the fabled 40-point mark at the Liberty Stadium.

Gylfi Sigurdsson's fourth goal in five league matches gave Swansea a deserved lead midway through the first half, while Alexandre Pato wasted two golden opportunities to restore parity.

Having teed up the opener, Jefferson Montero headed narrowly over from a Sigurdsson cross late on, but Swansea held on to end Hiddink's 15-match unbeaten run and record their first Premier League win over Chelsea.

Francesco Guidolin, who is among the names linked with the Italy post that will be vacated by Conte following Euro 2016, will also now hope he has done enough to remain at Swansea beyond the end of the season.

Asmir Begovic was preferred in to Thibaut Courtois in Chelsea's goal, while Montero, who gave Branislav Ivanovic a torrid time during August's reverse fixture, was awarded his first start since Guidolin's appointment as head coach.

Oscar sent Chelsea's first chance high and wide, before a dangerous ball into the Swansea box was cut out to deny Ruben Loftus-Cheek a tap-in.

Angel Rangel should have done better at the other end when he was sent clean through on Begovic and failed to find the target, but Swansea did go in front in the 25th minute.

With Montero showing glimpses of the talent that caught the eye at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the season, the Ecuador international created an angle to loft in a cross from the left wing.

Matt Miazga's weak clearing header fell kindly for Sigurdsson, who volleyed home his 11th Premier League goal of the season.

Swansea were on top and Leroy Fer arguably made the wrong decision to pass back across the six-yard box when a corner found him unmarked at the far post, before a Miazga interception inadvertently forced Begovic into a save.

A mix-up between Begovic and Baba Rahman on the edge of the box went unpunished by the returning Andre Ayew, but Montero was making the most of his chance in the starting XI as he drew yellow cards for Cesar Azpilicueta and Miazga.

It should have been 1-1 at the interval, but Pato blasted wide from close range after Oscar had beaten the offside trap to get in behind the Swansea defence.

Begovic reacted angrily when he saved at the feet of Alberto Paloschi early in the second half, feeling the Italian went in too strongly following a heavy first touch, before Pato squandered another great chance to pull level.

The Brazilian attempted to apply a clever finish to Pedro's ball from the left but only succeeded in diverting wide of the right-hand post.

The half-time introduction of Kenedy, which forced John Obi Mikel into the back four, failed to prompt an upturn in fortunes for Hiddink's men, and Jack Cork's long-range strike was kept out by a diving Begovic.

Montero's 75th-minute header was as close as either team came to adding to the scoreline thereafter, leaving Swansea to collect all three points and edge closer to safety.

Watford 1-1 Everton: Damp squib plays out at Vicarage Road

    2980062_heroa.jpg

Everton picked up their 500th point away from home in the Premier League in a 1-1 draw against Watford which saw their supporters call for manager Roberto Martinez's sacking on Saturday.

Martinez's side headed to Vicarage Road on a three-game losing streak, and visiting fans unfurled a banner calling for him to go as a result of their disappointing league campaign.

Watford were aiming to halt a run of four defeats in a row and a lack of confidence in either side was apparent in a game which barely spluttered into life outside of two minutes of first-half stoppage time.

James McCarthy pounced on a mistake to drill his side ahead but, as Everton have so often been criticised for this season, they surrendered their advantage all-too readily when Jose Holebas headed in from a corner just before the break.

Heurelho Gomes twice saved well from Aaron Lennon in the second half but neither side seemed willing to throw caution to the wind and risk another loss, with Romelu Lukaku and Watford's dangerous duo of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney too often isolated in attack.

Watford fans attempted to lift their side for a big finish, but neither side could fashion a chance to snatch all three points, with a draw enough to edge them a step closer to mathematical safety.

A cagey opening few minutes was lit up by two fine saves at either end. First, Joel Robles tipped Jose Manuel Jurado's left-footed drive from distance just past the post, before Gomes parried a fine curling effort from Gerard Deulofeu.

Lukaku endured a frustrating opening half-hour and a hopeful shot from 35 yards which drifted high and wide summed up Everton's lack of attacking spark, though Gareth Barry was frustrated not to win a penalty when Miguel Britos clattered him from behind when attempting to clear a cross.

Etienne Capoue's half-volley was inches from putting Watford ahead, but the home side gifted a goal to Everton in the last minute of the half. McCarthy pressured Britos into conceding possession on the edge of the box and he kept his composure to finish past Gomes into the bottom-right corner.

But Everton, much to Martinez's anger, failed to see out the half in front. John Stones' somewhat risky pass to Joel saw the goalkeeper clear the ball for a corner, and Holebas climbed highest at the far post to turn in a header from Ben Watson's delivery which deflected off Seamus Coleman.

Everton started the second half strongly. Lukaku's flicked attempt from Deulofeu's cross was well blocked and Lennon saw a shot deflect narrowly wide, before the winger was denied by a good low stop from Gomes and the Brazilian just managed to claw the rebound away from Lukaku, who was waiting to pounce.

Watford enjoyed a spell of pressure without ever really troubling Everton's goal, and Gomes was once more called into action to deny Lennon's low effort from the edge of the area after the ex-Tottenham man was afforded too much space.

Nordin Amrabat and Kevin Mirallas were introduced in an effort to spark some life into the final stages, and the Belgian's free-kick gave Lukaku a great chance to snatch the win after Gomes' save, but Juan Carlos Paredes intervened to ensure the ball clipped the crossbar and went harmlessly out.

Joel tipped Watson's drive from 20 yards around the left-hand post to safeguard a draw, which means the two sides remain a point apart in the table.

Guingamp 0-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Lucas double gives champions victory

    2981082_heroa.jpg

A second-half brace from Lucas Moura saw a much-changed Paris Saint-Germain ease to a 2-0 Ligue 1 win at Guingamp.

Laurent Blanc made nine alterations to his side with a trip to Manchester City in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on the horizon, but PSG eventually still had too much for their hosts, even without the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Angel Di Maria and Thiago Silva.

Guingamp duo Moustapha Diallo and Mevlut Erdinc both spurned promising opportunities as Guingamp had the better of the first half, but champions PSG raised their game after the break.

Lucas slotted home from the spot in the 56th minute after Christopher Nkunku was fouled by Jeremy Sorbon, before the Brazilian doubled his tally with a smart finish midway through the second half following some good work from Layvin Kurzawa.

The one negative for Blanc is a suspected knee injury sustained by first-choice goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who was forced off at half-time. It remains to be seen whether the German is fit to play at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, with the tie finely poised after a 2-2 draw in Paris.

An open start at the Stade du Roudourou yielded chances for both sides, with Blaise Matuidi warming the palms of Guingamp goalkeeper Jonas Lossl with firm strike inside five minutes, before Jimmy Briand had the ball in the net at the other end four minutes later, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Guingamp took heart from that early opportunity, with only some superb last-ditch defending from Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe preventing first Diallo and then Briand turning home during a frantic 15th-minute goalmouth scramble.

The hosts continued to press and should have taken the lead shortly after the half-hour mark, but Erdinc could not connect with Jonathan Martins-Pereira's low cross.

Hervin Ongenda forced a smart save from Rossl with a speculative 30-yard drive just before the break, but the champions otherwise struggled to assert themselves during a bright first half from Guingamp.

PSG's difficulties were compounded when Trapp had to be replaced by Salvatore Sirigu at the interval, following a collision with Kurzawa and Marcus Coco.
But Lucas intervened nine minutes after the break, when Nkunku was penalised for bringing Sorbon down in the box, allowing the 23-year-old to step up and score the resulting penalty.

Parity was nearly restored six minutes later as Younousse Sankhare flicked on Martins-Pereira's cross into the path of Briand, but the Frenchman failed to convert thanks to some good work from Sirigu.

But Guingamp's failure to make their pressure pay was once again punished by Lucas 19 minutes from time as the Brazilian burst into the box to latch on to Kurzawa's square ball before slotting home to seal the three points.

Espanyol 1-3 Atletico Madrid: Torres on target as Simeone's men win again

    2981362_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid moved back up to second in La Liga and maintained the pressure on leaders Barcelona by coming from behind to beat Espanyol 3-1 at Estadi Cornella-El Prat.

Antoine Griezmann, Fernando Torres and Koke were on target for Diego Simeone's side, who closed to within three points of Barca - in action at Real Sociedad later on Saturday.

Torres hit the post with an early effort but Espanyol took the lead after 28 minutes when Pape Diop superbly headed in Marco Asensio's corner.

The scores were levelled by Torres shortly after Diop's opener, the striker scoring for the third game in a row from Koke's pass, before Oscar Duarte hit the crossbar.

Koke was involved again in Atletico's second, recording his 12th assist of the season by playing in Griezmann for a well-taken finish.

And Koke netted the goal his performance deserved a minute from time, getting on the end of Torres' cross to ensure Atletico kept pace with Barca at the top.

Atletico named a full-strength side despite Wednesday's upcoming Champions League quarter-final second leg against the Catalan giants and they made a bright start.

Yannick Ferreira Carrasco shot wide after 11 minutes, then Torres, after his first-leg goal and red card against Barca, burst into the box but saw his effort clip the outside of the post.

Gerard Moreno's shot was saved by Jan Oblak and Atletico's goalkeeper then turned Ruben Duarte's low cross around the post, but Espanyol scored from the resulting corner.

Diop got up highest at the near post to flash a superb header across Oblak, but the lead lasted just six minutes as Torres superbly controlled a Koke pass on his chest before firing in a low finish.

Espanyol almost scored again before half-time as Atletico failed to defend from another set-piece, but Oscar Duarte's lobbed effort hit the top of the crossbar.

But Atletico edged in front after 57 minutes, with Griezmann on target for the seventh successive La Liga match.

Torres and Koke linked up to free the France international in the box and he made no mistake with a cool finish that went in off the far post for his 20th league goal of the season.

Simeone withdrew Griezmann and Carrasco immediately after that goal and Torres went close to adding a third with a sensational effort after 69 minutes, before Pau brilliantly saved Koke's volley.

Espanyol had won successive home games but there were few signs of a fightback by the hosts, although Moreno forced a good save from Oblak with four minutes to go.

But it was Atletico who had the final say as Koke rounded off a terrific individual display by stooping to head in a Torres delivery.

Manchester City 2-1 West Brom: Nasri strikes to secure three points

    2981372_heroa.jpg

Samir Nasri marked his first Premier League start since September with the decisive goal as Manchester City kept a grip on their spot in the top four with a 2-1 home win over West Brom on Saturday.

Nasri's season has been ravaged by a thigh tendon injury that required surgery and his resulting absence from City's Champions League squad means he will not feature in the concluding leg of the quarter-final versus Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Manuel Pellegrini made five changes to his side with an eye on that tie and City subsequently lacked fluency against a West Brom team apparently liberated by reaching the feted 40-point mark last weekend.

Sergio Aguero cancelled out Stephane Sessegnon's early opener in the 19th minute but West Brom carried a threat that a creaking City rearguard rarely contained with any comfort.

Pellegrini was forced to send on reinforcements in the form of Yaya Toure and Kevin De Bruyne and their introduction cranked a lacklustre performance through the gears long enough for Nasri to settle matters.

City are four points ahead of Manchester United in fifth – their rivals travel to title-chasing Tottenham on Sunday – and two behind Arsenal in third after recording back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since October.James McClean and Sessegnon returned to the West Brom line-up and repaid Pulis' faith in the fifth minute.

McClean scampered down the left and his deep cross found Sessegnon at the edge of the box. Aleksandar Kolarov was slow to close down and the winger fizzed in a shot at the near post with Joe Hart rooted to the spot.

City did not respond with any particular gusto but Sessegnon went from hero to villain when he untidily brought down Kolarov and Aguero coolly slotted the resulting penalty beyond Ben Foster's dive.

West Brom's setback was compounded by top scorer Salomon Rondon departing through injury, although they continued to ask questions of a City defence performing with a now familiar lack of conviction in the absence captain Vincent Kompany.

Rondon's replacement, Craig Gardner, fired wide on the edge of the box from Saido Berahino's deft lay-off and slammed a 33rd-minute free-kick into a heavily manned City wall.By comparison, Aguero ploughed a lone furrow in attack and the interval was welcome for the hosts.

The Argentina international continued to dazzle on his 200th City appearance and Foster did well to push a rasping drive out of the bottom left corner in the 55th minute.

Having scored in both of his appearances since returning from knee ligament damage, De Bruyne again made his presence felt as City took the lead in the 66th minute.

The Belgium international tore down the right and released Jesus Navas into the area and, although Aguero was twice thwarted by last-ditch challenges in his attempts to convert, Nasri was on hand to nutmeg James Chester on the line.

Berahino spurned a glorious chance to level with 16 minutes remaining, when the linesman's flag incorrectly stayed down but he sidefooted wide from close range.

City's afternoon concluded with the unwelcome sight of Aguero limping off following a number of heavy challenges, although relief was palpable at the Etihad when McClean's stoppage-time drive flew through a crowded penalty area and agonisingly wide.

Wenger: It will be difficult for Arsenal to win the league

    wenger-cropped_1a4w3dnvg0yj91nkqwt7a8koad.jpg

Arsene Wenger concedes it will be difficult for Arsenal to win the Premier League after seeing his side throw away a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with West Ham at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday.

The Gunners knew they needed to beat the in-form Hammers to keep their faint hopes of winning the title alive and raced into a strong position thanks to first-half goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

However, Arsenal needed a late strike from Lorient Koscielny to eventually rescue a point after Andy Carroll buried a superb hat-trick to dent the north Londoners' slim title hopes even further.

And with top two Leicester and Tottenham still to play tomorrow, Wenger admits his charges are not in a great position to win their first league crown since 2004 - but insists they will fight until the end.

“Third in the league, that’s not where we want to be. We've made it much more difficult for ourselves to win the championship but we have to keep going and hope,” Wenger said in his post-match press conference.

“You never know what can happen. We have to look behind us, clubs are chasing us, we have to be serious and focus on finishing as high as possible. It’s one of the places you feel guilty to drop points.”

Leaders Leicester travel to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the early kick-off on Sunday, before Tottenham face off against Manchester United later the same day.

Real Sociedad 1-0 Barcelona: Luis Enrique's men slip to shock defeat

    2982432_heroa.jpg

Barcelona are just three points clear of Atletico Madrid and four ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga as their miserable form at Anoeta Stadium continued with a 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad on Saturday, a result that blew the title race wide open.

Having been beaten by Madrid in the Clasico last weekend and seen both their arch rivals and fellow title challengers Atletico win earlier in the day, Barca headed to Basque country needing a positive result.

But instead they slipped to a third game without a win as the Catalan club's wait for a first away win over Sociedad since 2007 continued.

Sociedad, who came into the game on the back of a surprise 2-1 win over Sevilla, netted what proved to be the decisive goal in the fifth minute through Mikel Oyarzabal's fine header.

Barca dominated from that point on but, missing the suspended Luis Suarez, could not find a way past the in-form Geronimo Rulli, who pulled off a string of fine saves to frustrate Luis Enrique's men.

Lionel Messi had the best chance to level matters but he was left waiting for his 500th Barca goal as Sociedad held on to secure a repeat of last season's 1-0 win and blow the title race wide open.

Neymar was denied by Sociedad goalkeeper Rulli after just two minutes and Barca were quickly made to rue that missed opportunity as the hosts opened the scoring three minutes later.

Xabi Prieto's excellent delivery from the right was met by Oyarzabal with a superb looping header that left Claudio Bravo with no chance.

Barca eventually recovered their composure and began to take control of the game without creating too many opportunities, although Arda Turan was unfortunate to see his deflected close-range strike kept out by Rulli.

Sociedad started the second half in the same bright manner as they had begun the first but were grateful to Rulli for preserving the single-goal lead as he thwarted substitute Andres Iniesta with a stunning save.

Rulli dived brilliantly to his right to turn a fierce Iniesta drive from outside the area behind with a one-handed save.

Neymar then curled wide from a free-kick as Barca laboured to break down a stubborn Sociedad defence and their frustration will only have grown after Rulli produced more heroics to stop Messi from prodding in a leveller following good work from Gerard Pique.

Messi saw a late header easily saved by Rulli, who then denied Iniesta once more as Sociedad stood firm to condemn Barca to successive league defeats for the first time since November 2014.

Milan 1-2 Juventus: Pogba strike gives visitors victory

    2982892_heroa.jpg

Juventus moved another step closer to the Serie A title as they came from behind to defeat Milan 2-1 at San Siro on Saturday.

In a thrilling encounter, Alex gave Sinisa Mihajlovic's men a first-half lead, but Mario Mandzukic promptly equalised before Paul Pogba struck a controversial winner midway through the second half.

Juve were also indebted to a magnificent performance from captain Gianluigi Buffon, who produced stunning saves in both halves to keep out Mario Balotelli, who produced arguably his best performance since returning to Milan.

The win moves Juve nine points clear of Napoli ahead of their nearest rivals' game in hand at home to Verona on Sunday, with a fifth consecutive Scudetto moving closer.

Sixth-placed Milan have accumulated just two points from their last five league games and the success of their season depends almost entirely on the Coppa Italia final against Massimiliano Allegri's side next month.

Milan threatened first when Ignazio Abate's cross-cum-shot cannoned against the near post with Buffon taken by surprise.

The hosts then came even closer through Balotelli, who was one of four changes from under-pressure head coach Mihajlovic.

The on-loan Liverpool forward unleashed a brilliant free-kick from the edge of the box, but was somehow denied when Buffon dived to his right to make a wonderful one-handed save and then got up to keep out Luca Antonelli on the rebound.

There was no stopping Milan in the 18th minute, though. Balotelli whipped in a precise corner from the right and Alex powered a header past Buffon to grab the opening goal that their start fully warranted.

That stung Juve into action and Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had to make two impressive stops when Stephan Lichtsteiner turned Alvaro Morata's cut-back towards goal and then from Claudio Marchisio's long-range pile-driver.

Within nine minutes of the opener, Juve were level. The hosts failed to deal with Buffon's high ball, allowing Mandzukic to latch on to a first-time pass from Morata and find the bottom corner – the front two combining nicely in the continued injury absence of Paulo Dybala.

Buffon was just able to keep out a Keisuke Honda snapshot at the other end, before Lichtsteiner struck wide from a good opening for the champions as a thrilling first half ended level.

The brilliant Buffon was called into action again early in the second half. The 38-year-old got down sharply to deny Carlos Bacca and made an even better save to tip Balotelli's follow-up onto the crossbar.

The Milan striker then bundled the ball over the line with his hand, a goal which was promptly ruled out and earned him a yellow card, moments before he struck just over with a powerful drive.

Juve threatened next when Pogba directed a magnificent 25-yard free-kick off the post with Donnarumma beaten.

But Pogba was not to be denied and he put the visitors in front in the 65th minute. The France midfielder got free from Abate - who claimed a foul - and was able to chest down Marchisio's corner at the far post before sending a bouncing effort beyond Donnarumma.

Juve lost Morata and Kwadwo Asamoah through injury, but they held on for a seventh consecutive league win over Milan, who ran out of steam after Pogba's strike.

    Simeone hails Atletico's comeback win

    diego-simeone_jon8ljut3bph1l12dvax3qp17.jpg

Diego Simeone praised goalscorers Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres after Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat Espanyol 3-1 in La Liga on Saturday.

Simeone's side maintained pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona - who they face in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday - after Torres cancelled out Pape Diop's opener at Cornella-El Prat.

Griezmann put Atletico into the lead before Koke, who supplied the other two goals, headed in a Torres cross in the last few minutes to add gloss to the scoreline.

Simeone said he was "very happy" with the way his team fought back after falling a goal behind."The team responded again very well, especially after the Espanyol goal," Simeone told the media after the game. "I am very happy with the work of the players.

"We persevered in pursuit of victory. The second half was very complete. We were strong and [that is what] this game is all about. An important victory of this magnitude generates enthusiasm.

"Torres is persistent, he deserves everything that is happening. [Griezmann] is fantastic and I like him very much."

Simeone insisted his team can still win La Liga after climbing back above Real Madrid into second place and closing the gap on Barcelona to just three points ahead of the league leaders' match at Real Sociedad later on Saturday."I was taught that [you] must insist and believe in what you do," Simeone said.

Klopp: I don't select players based on their name - not even Sturridge

    2981272_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has insisted he will not make selection decisions based on names or status at Liverpool, even if it does involve a star player like Daniel Sturridge.

The striker was held in reserve against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final as the manager opted to start with young Belgian striker Divock Origi instead.

That choice proved inspired as the 20-year-old opened the scoring in the 1-1 draw at the Westfalenstadion, giving the Reds an away goal heading into the reverse leg at Anfield on Thursday.

Klopp reiterated his choice was based solely on the gameplan against his former club, and that Sturridge is in contention to feature from the off against Stoke on Sunday.

“I always think about Daniel, even when he’s not available, but he was [for Dortmund], we just decided for this game to go with Divock and I think it was a good decision,” the Reds boss told reporters at Melwood.

“His response on the pitch was very good, you saw immediately how strong he is and how good he is, which is very good for us. Now he’s rested and I don’t have to tell you anything about the line-up for Stoke, but of course, he is in my thoughts.”

When asked about Sturridge being viewed as the foremost striker at the club since Luis Suarez’s departure to Barcelona in the summer of 2014, Klopp added: “To be honest, I’m not interested in what you think of things, because I have to make decisions and I don’t make them based on who was what, where, when.

“There’s no doubt about Daniel’s quality, but how can he be absolutely 100 per cent and in his best shape with all his long breaks he had in training and matches and things like this? For me, it’s only what’s best for today, what’s the best for the next game and not about the name or something.

“Daniel is really doing well and he had absolutely no problem when he saw he will not start, there was nothing. “He was really greedy to come in, everyone could see it. He came in, he did his job and with the first situation, he could have scored. That’s what Daniel is.

“Leave him for the minute to work on the pitch and give all he has, that’s the thing you have to do and nothing else - not worry about when Suarez left the club what somebody thought and things like this. It’s a long, long time since then.

“There are a lot of strikers at the club and they all need faith and confidence and things like this and I try to give it to all, but I can’t show it with line-ups in a row. I have to also decide how I do it in each other position.”

With Klopp currently able to field Roberto Firmino, Origi and Sturridge as the focal point of his attack, the manager has the luxury of tailoring his front line to suit the approach against the opposition. “That’s the best situation you can have,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s a challenge between them. They all have to be in the best shape and then we can bring maybe two of them, it’s very likely that they can play together. “Divock and Daniel played together against Southampton, which was not too bad to be honest. It works really well.

“You need all strikers to be fit, which was not the case most of the time, but then you have to make decisions and a plan based on the match not on the name of a player even if it is Daniel Sturridge.”

Martinez: Hamstring injury makes Jagielka a semi-final doubt

    philjagielka-cropped_12kpby7y8tfkd13ojla43byi8x.jpg

Phil Jagielka could miss Everton's FA Cup semi-final after hobbling out of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Watford, according to manager Roberto Martinez.

The centre-back picked up a hamstring injury in the stalemate at Vicarage Road, and was replaced by Ramiro Funes Mori in the 90th minute.

Everton have a busy schedule in the coming weeks with Premier League matches against Crystal Palace, Southampton and Liverpool before their cup semi-final clash with either Manchester United or West Ham on April 23.

Martinez remains unclear how many of those games Jagielka will miss, but hopes tests in the coming days will provide a clearer picture.

"It was a real negative when Phil felt his hamstring towards the end," the Spaniard told the club's official website.

"He will be assessed over the next 24 hours but it doesn't look good.

"Phil doesn't get injured that often, so when he asks to come off then that is a worry. He was holding his left hamstring and we will assess it overnight.

"It is too early to tell [whether he will miss the semi-final]. We have a period of five games in two weeks, but he is a serious doubt for Wednesday and Crystal Palace."

Aguero fit for PSG - Pellegrini

Sergio Aguero will be fit for the second leg of Manchester City's Champions League quarter-final against PSG, despite limping out of Saturday's 2-1 Premier League victory over West Brom.

Having pulled City level from the penalty spot after 19 minutes at Etihad Stadium, Aguero left the field with an apparent injury in the closing stages.

However, manager Manuel Pellegrini subsequently revealed the issue was nothing more than an impact injury and Aguero will be available for Tuesday's visit of PSG, with the tie finely poised at 2-2 on aggregate.

"Kun had just a kick - it's not a problem for Tuesday," he said.

Samir Nasri, making his first start since September after recovering from a thigh injury, scored City's winner and drew praise from Pellegrini.

"It's very strange to have six months out with a muscle injury but he worked very well to come back, he returned sooner than the doctors expected so I was very impressed that he could play the full 90 minutes with so many months without playing," he added.
"He's a very important player and I'm very happy for him today."

Nasri's prolonged absence saw him omitted from the City squad for the latter stages of the Champions League, with Pellegrini commenting: "We expected Samir would come back in the middle of April. We needed to play the Champions League in February and we had just Kun in that moment as a striker so it was important to put Kelechi [Iheanacho] in the squad.

"But I don't think Samir would be able to play in three days' time anyway with so long out. He will be an important player in the Premier League as we try to finish as near to the top of the table as possible.

"We are always looking up rather than behind us. We must always try to continue being as near to the top as the table as we can.

"The four teams involved with us around us are playing each other this weekend which made it especially important to win today."

Saturday's victory leaves City two points behind third-placed Arsenal.

Mourinho: I do not have a contract with Manchester United

    josemourinho-cropped_18hx7y69xd36n1ab2wbj71dys4.jpg

Jose Mourinho insists he does not have a contract with Manchester United to take over as the club's manager next season.

Mourinho has been heavily tipped to become United manager next season with Louis van Gaal coming under fire for a dour style of play after heavy investment in the transfer market.

It has been widely reported that Mourinho has already signed a pre-contract at Old Trafford, but the former Chelsea boss maintains that there is no such deal in place.

"[Van Gaal] is my friend, I worked with him for a few years," the Portuguese coach told Sky Sports.

"I am always linked with jobs and in the summer I will have a job, but in this moment I can promise you I do not have a contract with any club.

"I am not in a position to turn [jobs] down, I am in a position to analyse. I am in a position to be open to any club or national team."

While Mourinho says he is open to any jobs, he admits he would prefer to remain in the Premier League.

"I have to be honest, if possible I would prefer a club but I must analyse to see what is best for my career and to be back with everything I have," the 53-year-old added.

"I would prefer [to be in England]. I love the country, I love the football here, my family is very stable and happy.

"If possible, yes, it would be my first choice."

Lionel Messi on worst scoring run since 2011

    2982432_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is in the midst of his worst scoring drought in five years – having gone four matches without a goal for the Catalans.

He has now gone 362 minutes since finding the net in all competitions – his worst run since April and May of 2011.

The Ballon d’Or winner has been prolific for Luis Enrique’s side since breaking into the side in 2004 and stands on the verge of scoring his 500th career goal. However, that landmark is proving remarkably stubborn for the Argentine to reach.

After failing to score in a 2-2 draw against Villarreal prior to the international break, Real Madrid then shut the 28-year-old out, and his woes only grew deeper on Saturday evening as Barca slumped to a shock 1-0 reverse against Real Sociedad – their third Liga match in succession without a victory. In between times, Messi came up dry in the 2-1 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid.

While Messi struggles personally, his team’s problems have opened the door to a belated title challenge from Madrid clubs Atletico and Real, who have closed the gap at the summit of the standings to three and four points respectively.
