Aguero keeping a close eye on Man City's potential Champions League opponents

    2997302_heroa.jpg

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will be glued to his television on Wednesday night as he waits to see whether his former club Atletico Madrid can join the Blues in the Champions League semi-finals.

City beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium to seal their place in the competition's final four, the first time the club have ever reached this stage.

Atletico, who signed Aguero from Independiente in 2006, trail Barcelona 2-1 going into the second at the Vicente Calderon, but with an away goal in the bag they will be confident of threatening Luis Enrique's men, who have just one win in their last four matches.

Aguero watched from the Etihad dressing room as Atleti beat PSV on penalties in the last round, and he admits he will be keeping a close eye on events in Madrid, and in Lisbon where Bayern Munich take on Benfica, as he prepares for Friday's draw.

"I am obviously going to follow both games," he told reporters. "Obviously I hope the best team goes through, Atleti in the last few years have improved a lot and I think they can give Barcelona a really tough game. I played in Atletico and I want them to do well.

"Atleti are playing really well and, as well as that, they have an Argentine in El Cholo [Diego Simeone]. I am happy with how he has taken Atletico forward and I hope he can keep doing so."

Real Madrid secured their place in the final four after coming from behind to beat Wolfsburg 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit.

Aguero admitted before the quarter-final draw that he hoped to avoid Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but, perhaps buoyed by going one step further, he is now happy to take on all comers.
"At this point you cannot choose [an opponent]," he added. "To win the Champions League you have to play against the best and today we were up against one of those, a favourite. Now we'll have to see who the other candidates are but we know it will be tough."

Aguero missed a first-half penalty against PSG on Tuesday, but he is confident he will have the opportunity to make amends.

"These things happen, I'm not on a good run with penalties but the important thing is we qualified and I will get another chance to make up for it soon.

"I have scored a lot of goals but the important thing is to get through."

City's progress represents something of a statement for Manuel Pellegrini, who has long known that he will be replaced this summer no matter how the Blues perform this season.
And Aguero believes his manager will have taken extra pleasure from guiding his team to the final stages and surpassing expectations.

"We know that he won't be there for the next season so to be in the semis is something really amazing, it gives us great pride to take City to this level.

"It is important for him and for all of us, obviously it is important for him because he knows he won't be here so I imagine he must be very happy, very pleased. I hope we can go even further.

"The confidence is there, we are in semis and anything can happen. We will be at our maximum, depending on who we play against, but we will be going all out to win it."

Dortmund can beat Liverpool but it won't be easy - Held

    2986562_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund hero Siegfried Held is confident his former club can reach the Europa League semi-finals at the expense of Liverpool, but admits it won't be easy for them.

The Bundesliga side travel to Anfield on Thursday for the second leg of their quarter-final clash against the Reds, trailing on away goals after a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at Signal Iduna Park last week.

Divock Origi opened the scoring for Liverpool which drew a celebration from former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp on his return to his old stomping ground, before Mats Hummels levelled the affair in the second half.

Dortmund, who many viewed as the favourites to win the competition before facing Liverpool, largely underwhelmed in the first leg but Held says he wasn't surprised by their performance and believes they have enough about them to get past the Reds.

“No, the chance to win was 50 to 50,” Held told Goal when asked if BVB's display in the opening leg shocked him.
“It is a very physical game [with Liverpool]. It has already been seen in Dortmund that the Englishmen go harder in duels. But there are many aspects which Dortmund are better at. I am confident they can go through.

Held, who scored the opening goal as Dortmund beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 1966 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Scotland 50 years ago, also thinks Thomas Tuchel's charges have a good chance of adding to their European trophy collection this season.

When asked if he believes Dortmund can win the Europa League, Held added: “I think so. If the team can show what it can do, it will be possible this year.”

Leicester City dominate Player of the Year nominees

    2985222_heroa.jpg

Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante have been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award thanks to their starring roles in Leicester City's remarkable Premier League title bid.

Leicester sit seven points clear at the top of the table with just five games to go, and the consistently outstanding trio of Vardy, Mahrez and Kante have been recognised by their peers with places on the six-man shortlist, which was announced on Wednesday.Tottenham are Leicester's closest challengers for the title following an excellent season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Harry Kane has been the driving force behind their impressive campaign and has received nominations in both the senior and Young Player of the Year categories, with West Ham's Dimitri Payet and Arsenal's Mesut Ozil completing the shortlist for the senior award.

Vardy passed the 20-goal mark in the Premier League with a brace as Leicester won 2-0 at Sunderland on Sunday, while Mahrez has registered 16 goals and 11 assists to act as the perfect foil for the England international.Kante, meanwhile, has been a revelation for Claudio Ranieri's team in central midfield.

Spurs forward Kane is the Premier League's top scorer with 22 to his name - one more than Vardy - while playmaker Payet has enjoyed a wonderful debut term in England, establishing himself as the division's most-feared free-kick specialist.

Ozil's influence at Arsenal is best shown in his tally of 18 assists, which leaves him just two short of Thierry Henry's record of 20 from 2002-03.

Benzema ruled out of Euro 2016 after FFF meeting

    3001692_heroa.jpg

The French Football Federation (FFF) has ruled Karim Benzema out of contention for Euro 2016, citing the need "to work towards unity" in the squad.

Benzema was suspended from national team duty by the FFF in December pending the outcome of a legal investigation into an alleged plot to blackmail fellow international Mathieu Valbuena.

With the investigation still ongoing, and following a meeting between FFF president Noel Le Graet and coach Didier Deschamps on Wednesday, it has been decided that the Real Madrid striker will not play at the European Championship.

"The evidence available in this case does not clearly establish the involvement of different actors, including Mr Benzema, and he will return to the court to establish the responsibilities of the protagonists," read a statement from the FFF.

"In light of these elements, and the partial lifting of the judicial review of Mr Benzema, which made his selection for France again possible, there is no obstacle, in legal terms, relating to his selection.

"Based on this analysis, Mr Le Graet and Mr Deschamps met to discuss the situation of Mr Benzema. The president of the federation and the coach wish to recall that sporting performance is an important, but not exclusive, criterion in determining selection for the France national team.

"The ability of players to work towards unity, in and around the group, setting an example and the preservation of the group are also taken into account by all of the selectors in the Federation."As a result, Noel Le Graet and Didier Deschamps decided that Karim Benzema will not participate in Euro 2016."

Benzema, who pre-empted the official announcement by posting the news on Twitter, admitted he was disappointed with the decision but offered thanks for the support he has received.

"Sadly for me and for all who have backed and supported me, I will not be selected for the Euros in France," he tweeted.

Benzema has been charged with complicity in an attempt to blackmail and participating in a criminal conspiracy as part of a sex-tape plot involving Valbuena, which he denies.

In March, it looked as though the 28-year-old was a step closer to a return to the France set-up when an order preventing him from meeting his international team-mate was lifted on appeal.

However, any potential for a return in the friendly matches against Netherlands and Russia last month was scuppered by a hamstring injury. The striker's last appearance for France came in the 4-0 friendly victory over Armenia, in which he scored twice, in October last year.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Benzema has scored 25 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for Madrid this season.France get Euro 2016 underway with the Group A clash against Romania at the Stade de France on June 10.

    Hazard: Real Madrid rumours untrue

    eden-hazard-cropped_1mpdgd0n4h5151hby1tdld0lv5.jpg

Eden Hazard insists there is no truth to rumours that he is set to ditch Chelsea to join Real Madrid.Reports in Spain this week claimed Hazard is set to swap Stamford Bridge for the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season in a €40 million move.

However, the Belgium forward, who is currently sidelined with a hip injury, insists this is not the case - although he stopped short of completely ruling out a move away from west London."I don't know who is saying that, but it's not true," he said in an interview with ACTV. "At the moment, I'm at Chelsea.

"First I have to finish the season and I still have a contract for four years. I'm there and I'm currently feeling good over there.

"I want to be on the pitch as soon as possible - with Chelsea."In line with Chelsea's slump, Hazard has suffered a remarkable drop off in form this season.

The 25-year-old was awarded both the PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers' Footballer of the Year for his leading role in Chelsea's Premier League title win in 2014-15.

By contrast, Hazard has failed to score in 26 top-flight appearances this term with his club languishing in 10th place with six games remaining.

Ranieri wary of Leicester's five 'terrible' tests

    claudioranieri-cropped_1fvhpye21464i1fizno5wc3ldn.jpg

Leicester City are seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but manager Claudio Ranieri is still wary of his side's five "terrible" tests to come.Leicester face a tough run-in, with matches against West Ham, Swansea City, Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea still to play.

Three wins from their last five games would be enough to secure the title, regardless of what Tottenham - who sit in second - do in their five remaining fixtures. But Ranieri says there is still work to do.

"It's not done yet," he said. "We are in the Champions League - at least, in the preliminary round of the Champions League."But the last five tests will be terrible. Tottenham didn't give up and we have to stay focused."

Ranieri was visibly emotional after Leicester's 2-0 win over Sunderland, appearing to shed a tear or two, but the Italian said he would try to contain his emotions for the rest of the title run-in."They were not real tears. They were unshed tears. It was a moment of emotion," he said.

"To see all those people around us, entire families on the buses with the Leicester shirts, who have followed us up to Sunderland, it struck me deeply."You realise, in these cases, the extraordinary power of football. When our sport manages to pull off this positivity, you cannot remain indifferent."

:love:West Ham 1-2 Manchester United: Red Devils book FA Cup semi-final spot

    3002732_heroa.jpg

Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini spoiled West Ham's final FA Cup match at Upton Park as Manchester United moved into the semi-finals with a 2-1 victory.

Rashford sparked the quarter-final replay into life after 54 minutes with a stunning piece of quality to beat Darren Randolph, before Fellaini bundled home a second to set up a last-four meeting with Everton a week on Saturday.

There was little to separate the two sides in the opening 45 minutes, but, just before the hour, Rashford profited after excellent work from Anthony Martial, curling an 18-yard effort off the underside of the bar.

Martial was at the heart of the visitors' second, too, as his shot was turned beyond Randolph by the unmarked Fellaini.

Two goals in quick succession sapped the life out of West Ham, and, although James Tomkins pulled one back and Cheikhou Kouyate had a late header disallowed for offside, Slaven Bilic's men could not find an equaliser, leaving them to focus on challenging the top four in the Premier League.

With the backing of their vociferous home support, West Ham, who relocate to the Olympic Stadium at the end of the season, had the better of the opening 10 minutes with crisp passing moves, Dimitri Payet and Aaron Cresswell particularly impressing on the left.

Chances were hard to come by, though, with only Enner Valencia bringing a save out of David de Gea, his low shot from Cresswell's pass easily held by Spain's number one.

Slowly the visitors found their footing and began to pose a threat on the counter, Fellaini seeing a glorious chance deflect off Angelo Ogbonna before Randolph pushed it over.

Manchester United finished the half the stronger and saw two opportunities go begging. Jesse Lingard fired straight at Randolph after a marauding run by Rashford, before Michael Carrick's low shot fizzed wide from 20 yards.

The visitors continued to press after the restart and soon took the lead as teenage prodigy Rashford netted his sixth goal in all competitions this season.

After Martial had intercepted a loose Michail Antonio pass, the Frenchman found the 18-year-old and – after making space for himself – he curled a pinpoint effort into the top corner.

Smart goalkeeping from Randolph kept the home side from being cut adrift in the tie as he raced off his line to intercept before Lingard and Rashford could pounce.

Randolph could do nothing to stop a second goal for Louis van Gaal's men, though, as Fellaini diverted the ball home after 67 minutes as the Belgium international bundled Martial's deflected shot from close range into the back of the net.

That two-goal advantage did not last long, however, as Tomkins halved the deficit with 11 minutes to play. The defender pouncing from two yards out to head home Andy Carroll's knock down.

Carroll and Kouyate went close to taking the game into extra time in the closing seconds, but both found De Gea in sensational form, the latter also seeing a header ruled out for offside.

Manchester United introduced Wayne Rooney for his first appearance in two months with a minute to play, and he was able to help them secure a semi-final berth, easing the pressure on Van Gaal following a lacklustre campaign that could yet end with silverware.

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Barcelona (agg 3-2): Griezmann sends champions crashing out

    3003062_heroa.jpg

Barcelona's season unravelled further in controversial fashion after the holders were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, with Antoine Griezmann's double securing passage to the semi-finals with 2-0 win at the Vicente Calderon.

Heading into stoppage time and searching for the goal that would have forced an extra 30 minutes, Barca were incensed not to receive a penalty when Andres Iniesta's shot struck the arm of Atletico captain Gabi just inside the box, with the referee instead awarding a free-kick which Lionel Messi hit over.

Luis Enrique's men had led 2-1 from the first leg but ultimately failed to cope with the intensity of an Atletico side who are also just three points behind them in La Liga and will be buoyed by this scalp as they seek to heap added misery onto their Catalan counterparts domestically.

Barcelona's willingness to sit on that slender first-leg advantage led to a cagey and tense first half-hour, but Atletico broke through with 36 minutes on the clock, as Griezmann nodded in to spark wild celebrations.

Dogged Atletico held firm for the remainder of the half and went desperately close to a second soon after the break, but Lucas Hernandez's header was kept out by the crossbar.

Barca soon began to exert some control, keeping Atletico penned back, but Jan Oblak had little trouble keeping Luis Suarez at bay with their best chance just after the hour mark.

Atletico were forced to withstand significant pressure during the final stages, but Diego Simeone's men held on in typical fashion and then netted a second on the break as Iniesta's handball allowed Griezmann to convert from the spot with two minutes remaining.Referee Nicola Rizzoli then provoked a furious reaction from Barca with his decision to award only a free-kick for Gabi's handball.

The result means Atletico have knocked Barca out in the quarter-finals of this competition in two of the past three seasons, while they gain further psychological advantage in their quest to chase down Barca's slender lead in the league with just six games to go.

Urged on by a raucous atmosphere at the Vicente Calderon, Atletico began proceedings with great urgency, pouring men forward quickly and in numbers. It took just seven minutes for the hosts to create the first chance and they ultimately let Barca off the hook, as the unmarked Griezmann headed straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Barca's terrifying attack of Messi, Neymar and Suarez were being kept quiet, but the away side did get to grips with Atletico's intense pressing, resulting in the two sides cancelling each other out in midfield for long periods.

Atletico's patience and intensity paid off nine minutes before the break, though, as Griezmann rose to meet Saul Niguez’s delightful cross and sent a fine glancing header past the helpless Ter Stegen.

Simeone's men could have added a second just before the interval, but Yannick Ferreira Carrasco was thwarted by Ter Stegen after single-handedly leading a breakaway.

Barca initially struggled to mount a response after the break and Atletico went mightily close to increasing their lead, as Lucas' looping header bounced back off the bar in the 54th minute.A crucial block from Gabi six minutes later prevented Suarez a simple tap-in, but the occasion marked an improvement from the visitors.

Oblak was their saviour in the 66th minute, as the goalkeeper got himself in the way of Suarez's effort after the Uruguayan expertly turned his compatriot Diego Godin on the edge of the area.

Wave after wave of Barca attacks were halted by the home defence during the final 20 minutes, as the reigning champions continued to be frustrated, with Messi kept particularly quiet.Barca threw everything at Atletico in desperate fashion for the final 10 minutes, but it was the home side who were left jubilant.

A marvellous Filipe Luis breakaway left Iniesta as the last man and the midfielder handled in the penalty area, with Griezmann squeezing the spot-kick just beyond Ter Stegen diving low to his left.

Barca should have been presented with the chance to force extra-time, but luck was on Atletico's side as the holders were dumped out.

Ibrahimovic: I want to keep winning trophies

    2997692_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic insists he wants to continue winning trophies as he weighs up the next move in his career.

The Sweden international's contract at Parc des Princes is up at the end of the season and a series of clubs have been linked with the former Barcelona and AC Milan forward.

Ibrahimovic has not ruled out signing a new deal with the Ligue 1 champions, though Manchester United, West Ham and a host MLS sides are rumoured to be interested in his services.

And while the 34-year-old admits he has received plenty of offers from English clubs, he is yet to make a decision on his future.

"I have won a lot of trophies but I still want to win a lot more," he told reporters. "I want to do it wherever I can.

On offers from England, he said: "I have had lots."

Man City have shown Premier League is better than Ligue 1 - Sagna

    2834712_heroa.jpg

Bacary Sagna says Manchester City's victory over Paris Saint-Germain has proved beyond doubt that the Premier League is stronger than Ligue 1.

PSG defender Thiago Silva claimed earlier this week that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be taking a "step down in quality" if he were to leave the Parc des Princes for an English club this summer.

The French side won the title in mid-March and still hold a 28-point lead over second-placed Monaco despite losing to the principality club a week after being crowned champions.

Sagna, though, says there can be no question as to which is the better league after helping Manuel Pellegrini's side secure a 3-2 aggregate victory to progress to the Champions League semi-final.

"If anyone wondered which is the best between the French Ligue 1 and the Premier League they will have seen the Premier League is the best," he told reporters.

The Frenchman also believes his club have proven some doubters wrong on these shores: "We gave the best answer to anyone who doubts us by qualifying for the semi-final. As a team we've shown we deserve to be one of the best in Europe."

City have undeniably struggled in the Premier League, however, and face a fight to finish in the top four after a run of three consecutive defeats through February and March saw them crash out of the title race.

As a result, Sagna believes City have proven their battling qualities by regrouping to reach the Champions League final four for the first time in their history,

"We had to step up," he continued. "We could have done better in the league and we still have to look forward to it. We still have to qualify for the Champions League.

"But tonight we were up against a good team in a different competition and we had to play well. But it was a good response.

"We are still here even though we've had some setbacks in the league. We want to fight."
Kevin De Bruyne was once again the match-winner for City as he curled home a 76th-minute winner, his 15th goal since signing from Wolfsburg last summer.

He has also racked up 12 assists in his time at the Etihad Stadium, and Sagna realises his team-mate is capable of making the difference.

"We defended great as a team, we kept the ball quite well in the first half but maybe gave them too much space," he continued. "We knew we had to remain solid, to work hard as a team. We knew we'd create some chances and we'd score.

"Kevin's a great player, he's shown his class since he came to the club and he's very important to us."

Madrid must stick with Zidane - Benzema

    benzema-zidane-cropped_17zpkejfcenqp1ckrogbdj4253.jpg

Karim Benzema has urged the Real Madrid hierarchy to stick with Zinedine Zidane as the club's head coach beyond the 2015-16 campaign in the wake of their Champions League win over Wolfsburg.

Cristiano Ronaldo starred with a hat-trick as Madrid overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to progress to the Champions League semi-finals with a 3-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Madrid beat Barcelona in the Clasico this month and have pulled within four points of their arch-rivals at the top of La Liga on the back of six straight league wins.

And Benzema, who revealed on Wednesday that he will not be selected in the France squad for Euro 2016, feels Zidane has shown he is the right man for the job.

"This is also Zidane's success," Benzema told AS. "I have a lot of respect for Zidane. He gives me a lot of confidence."I have already said it before, but Zidane is like a godfather to me. He is my coach now and I get along with him very well.

"I am very happy for him that we beat Wolfsburg. He deserves this success."Of course, I want him to continue as Madrid coach. He is showing everyone that he was not only a great player, but is a great coach as well."

Van Gaal: FA Cup win important for United, not me

    vangaal-cropped_5aq1nz21chb41u56mojdhv7ys.jpg

Louis van Gaal insisted Wednesday's FA Cup quarter-final replay victory over West Ham was more significant for Manchester United rather than his own future.

The Dutchman has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks as United have lost ground in the race for the Premier League top four, with his style of play having received criticism all season.

However, he remains on course for silverware despite United's inconsistent campaign and their 2-1 win at Upton Park eases some of the pressure on him.
Van Gaal is not concerned by that, though, and says the result is much more important for the club ahead of a Wembley semi-final with Everton.

"It is not important for me, it is important for the club, for the players and for the team," he told BBC Sport. "I said I wanted a title and I am very happy but it is very important for the club."

It took United the opening 45 minutes to really find their stride, as Marcus Rashford opened the scoring early in the second half and Marouane Fellaini added a second later on.

James Tomkins pulled a goal back, but United were able to hold on despite late pressure, much to the delight of boss Van Gaal. "We played defensively very well. We didn't give so much away," he said.

"They lost the ball a lot of times and I believe with a bit more composure we could have finished it much earlier. I said at half-time we had to show composure in the third and fourth phase. "We did that better but I still believe we could have finished the game earlier."

Rashford's strike was a particular highlight as he was freed up by excellent work from Anthony Martial before showing great composure to fire past Darren Randolph.

Van Gaal added: "I was on the bench behind Rashford's shot. I saw the corner of the goal and I thought you have to shoot and he did but it is much more difficult than you
