කැලණිය ඇත්ත සිද්ධිය

" මේ දිනවල බුකියේ උණුසුම්ම මාතෘකාව කැළණිය විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයෙ නවකවද සිදුවීමයි !. ඒ සමගම එම සිදුවීම් මාලාවට මුහුණ දී අවසානයෙ නිතීය හමුවට යොමු කෙරුනු කැළණිය විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයෙ පළමු වසර සිසුවිය ගැනත් බොහො දෙනා බොහො තැන් වල විවිද අදහස් පළ කර ඇති අයුරු දුටිමි !. අන්තරයෙ පිටු වලට අනුව ඇය දේශපාලකයෙකුගෙ දියණියකි. මේ සිදුවන සිදුවීම් සියල්ල ඇගෙ දේශපාලන බලය නිසාය. ඇය ගැනත් මේ සිදුවීම් මාලාව ගැනත් මුලසිටම තොරතුරු දැනන් සිටි නිසා ඇයට එල්ල වෙන මේ මඩ චෝදනා වලට පිළිතුරු දීම ඇගෙ නිර්භීත ක්‍රීයාවට මාගෙන් විය යුතු යුතුකමක් සේ සලකා මේ සටහන ලියමි !.
ඇය මාගෙ හොදම මිතුරෙකුගෙ ඥාති සොහොයුරියක්. මේ සිදුවීම් ගැන මා මුලින් දැන ගන්නා විටත් අවස්ථා කිහිපයකදීම ඇය ජ්‍යේෂ්ට සිසුන්ගේ පීඩන වලට ලක්ව සිටියා. ජ්‍යේෂ්ට සිසුන් විසින් පළමු වසර සිසුවියන්ට නියම කර තිබු ඇදුම හා කොණ්ඩය සකසන අකාරයට අවනත නොවි සිටි නිසා ඇය පසුපස බොහො දිනවල ජ්‍යේෂ්ට සිසුන් මෙන්ම සිසුවියන්ද පන්නා තිබුනා. ඇගෙ අතින් ඇද නවකවදය ලබා දෙන "බැම්ම" නම් ස්ථානයට බලෙන් රැගෙන යාමට පවා උත්සාහ කර තිබුනා. මේ බොහො අවස්තාවල ජ්‍යේෂ්‍ට සිසුන් ඇයට තර්ජනය කරන , බැන වදින විට කෙසේ හෝ ඇය ඒවා පටිගත කර ගෙනද තිබුනා !. සිංහල අලුත් අවුරුදු නිවාඩුව ඇරඹීමට පෙර දිනක ඇය නැවත වතාවක් ජ්‍යේෂ්ට ශිෂ්‍යන් හා ශිෂ්‍යාවන් රංචුවක් විසින් හඹා එනවා !. අසළ බස් නැවතුම්පොලක ඇයව තනි කරගන්නා ඔහුන් ඇයට තර්ජණය කරනවා. ඒ ඔහුන් ට අවනත නොවුනහොත් ඇයට ඇසිඩ් ගහනවා කියමින්. මෙතනදි ඇය ඔහුන්ට " තමන් ඔහුන්ට අවනත නොවන බවත් , අවුරුදු නිවාඩුවෙන් පසුවද ඇගෙ ඇදුමෙ වෙනසක් නොකරන බවත් , දිගටම ජ්‍යේෂ්ටයන් මේ අකාරයට ඇය හඹා ආවොත් විශ්ව විද්‍යාල පරිපාලනයට පැමිණිලි කරන බවට ප්‍රකාශ කරනවා. නව අවුරුදු නිවාඩුවෙන් පසුව ඇයට නැවතත් දේශන ආරම්භ වෙනවා. කියු ලෙසටම සිය ඇදුමෙ වෙනසක් නොකර විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයට යාමට තරම් ඇය නිර්භීත වෙනවා. දේශන අවසන් වීමෙන් පසු දේශන ශාලාවෙන් නික්මෙන ඇය පසුපස ජ්‍යේෂ්‍ටයන් සැමදාම පාහේ හඹා එනවා.
ඇය දේශන ශාලාවෙන් පිටතදි හසු කර ගැනීමට නොහැකි වු නිසා ජ්‍යේෂ්ටයන් ඊට පසු දිනක ඇය සොයා දේශන ශාලාවකටම පැමිණෙනවා. ඊට පෙර ඇයට දේශන ශාලාවෙන් පිට වීමට නොහැකි වන සේ දෙවන වසර ශිෂ්‍යාවන්ද පළමු වසර සිසුවියන් හැද පැලැද ගෙන දේශන ශාලාව වට කරනවා !. ඇයව බිත්තියකට හේත්තු කර ගන්නා දෙවන වසර සිසුන් ඇයට තර්ජණය කරන අයුරු ඇය තමන්ගේ ජංගම දුරකථනයෙන් පටිගත කරගැනීමට සමත් වෙනවා. ඇය -: ඇයි එයා අදිනවා කියලා මාත් අදින්න ඕනද ?
ඇය සිය දුරකථනයෙන් ඇමතුමක් ගැනීමට උත්සාහ කරයි. ඔහුන් ඇගෙ දූරකථනය උදුරා ගැනීමට උත්සාහ කරයි.
කෙසේ හෝ ඔහුන්ට සිය දුරකථනය උදුරා ගැනීමට ඇය ඉඩ නොදෙ. මේ වන විට ඇය ලබා ගත් ඇමතුම ( විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ ශිෂ්‍ය සුභ සාධණය පිළිබද ආචාර්ය චාමින්ද අබේසිංහ මහතාට) සම්බන්ධ වේ. තමන්ගේ කීමට ඇය ඉටු නොවන තැන ඇයට තර්ජණය කළ දෙවන වසර සිසුන්ගෙන් , ඉදිරියේම සිටි සිසුවා ඇගෙ කම්මුලට පහර දෙයි. මේ සිදුවීම වන විට අදාල ස්ථනයෙ සිටි පළමු වසර සිසුන් සිදුවීම දකින අතර දුරකථන ඇමතුමෙ සිටිමින් සියලු දේ අසා සිටි චාමින්ද අබෙසිංහ මහතා ඇය සොයා දේශන ශාලාවට පැමිනේ .( ඇයට පහර දුන් බවට දැන් පළමු වසර සිසුන් නොකීවද පහරදීම සිදු වූ දිනයෙ ඔහුන් ඇයට එවු කෙටි පණිවිඩ වල මේ ගැන සදහන් ව තිබෙ)
දෙවන වසර සිසුන්ගෙන් ඇයව ගලවා ගන්නා ආචාර්යවරයා විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයෙ උපකුලපතිතුමා ගෙ උපදෙස් පරිදි ඇය සමග කිරිබත්ගොඩ පොලීසියට ගොස් ප්‍රථම වතාවට පැමිණිලි කරයි. මේ පැමිනිල්ල ඇය විසින් කරන ලද්දක් බවට අන්තරය හා නවකවදයට පක්ෂ පාර්ශව වලින් මතයක් ගෙන ගියද සැබෑ ලෙසම සිදු වූයෙ ඇයගෙ සිදුවීමට විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයෙන් පැමිණිලි කිරීමයි. අදාල පැමිනිල්ලෙන් පසුව ඇය අමතන පළමු වසරේම සිසුවෙක් සහ සිසුවියක් අදාල පැමිනිල්ල ඉවත් කර ගැනීමට ඇයට බලපෑම් කරයි. (හඩ පට ඇත) හාස්‍යයට කරුණ වන්නෙ එසේ බලපෑම් කරන සිසුවිය මින් පෙර නවකවදය දරා ගත නොහැකිව තමාගේම අත තමාම කපාගෙන රෝහල් ගත වී ප්‍රථිකාරද ලබා සිටීමයි. දැන් අත්අඩංගුවෙ පසුවන හත් දෙනාගෙන් දෙදෙනෙක් පලමු වසර සිසුන් වන අතර ඒ දෙදෙනා ඉහත කී සිසුවා හා සිසුවියයි.
තවද ඇගෙ පියා දේශපාලකයෙක් ලෙස හංවඩු ගසා මේ සිදුවීම් දේශපාලන පළිගැනීමක් ලෙස හුවා දැක්වීමද නවකවදයට පක්ෂ පිරිස් සිදු කරයි. සැබැ ලෙසම ඇගෙ පියා මේ වනවිට ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙද නැත. ඔහු විදේශ ගතව සේවය කරයි. ඇගේ පවුලෙ කිසිවෙකුද දේශපාලනයට සම්බන්ධ නැති අතර ඇය විදි තාඩන පීඩා නිවැසියන්ගෙන් සගවා ගෙන තනිව මුහුණ දීමට පවා එකළ ඇය නිර්භීත වූවා.
දහසක් දෙනා හිස නවා පීඩාවට පත් වෙද්දි, තමන්ගේ අයිතිය වෙනුවෙන් පෙනි සිටිමින් හිස නොනවා නීර්භීතව තමන් වෙනුවෙන්ම් පෙනි සිටි ඇයට මුලු සමාජයේම ප්‍රණාමය හිමි විය යුතුයැයි පෞද්ගලිකව මා විස්වාස කරමි. පීඩකයා වෙනුවෙන් පීඩීතයාම ඇයට එරෙහිව නැගි සිටීමට සුදානම් බවද කැළණි සරසවි ආරංචිමාර්ග පවසයි. ඒ නැවත විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය ආරම්භ කළ පසු ඈට එරෙහිව පළමු වසර සිසුන්ම දේශන වලට සහභාගි නොවීමෙන්. කෙසේ හො මෙතෙක් කල් කිසිවෙකුට අභිබවා යා නොහැකි වූ මේ පිළිල සමාජ ක්‍රමය අභිබවා ගොස් ඔහුන්ට අභියෝග කළ ඇයගේ ආරක්ෂාව වෙනුවෙන් පෙනිසීටීම මුලු මහත් ජාතීයටම මෙතැන් පටන් භාරයි.

Rag is all about abusing a person physically, verbally and psychologically. There is nothing good about this.

I went to University of Kelaniya. My whole first year was about getting ragged, individually and groupwise. Not only from my faculty, but also from other faculties. So yes, I have experienced this.

I saw several posts saying how rag helped them to learn names of their friends and places in the uni. Funny how students who excelled in A/Levels without being abused into doing it find rag as the ultimate way to learn some names. Some people also found rag to be one of the best memories in University life. What this means you haven't explored any of the activities available at the university. Do a sport, join a club, organize some events, fall in love! Do them and then lets talk about best memories of University.

Another thing is dress code, which aims at creating some equality within the students? Birds of a feather flock together. Irrespective of wearing same type of clothes, certain type of students will only associate with like-minded people. Dress code does not build equality. And of course, dress code only applies for first year, so from second year onwards it's back to normal.
What if a certain student does not like the dress code? What if that student feels uncomfortable in that, that ruins that student's social skills. That affects the student's behaviors. Dress code too is an abusive tool. People should be able to wear anything that they feel comfortable in.

Apart from learning names, dress codes there is also getting scolded for no reason, sometime in filth. So men do this primarily for three reasons, most of the reasons revolve around girls and none of it revolves around building equality or batch spirit. Let me further elaborate on these reasons.

1. To find a romantic partner
How exactly does scolding help with this? Well there are several strategies. One of them is Good Cop - Bad Cop strategy, where few people scold a girl, and one person console her/make her feel better. The move from one emotion to the next was so extreme that girls became disoriented, and their ability to think critical simply switched off. It is called the "fear-then-relief response by researchers.

2. To destroy the personality of girls who are out of their league.
This is purely being jealous about what they can't achieve. This is why they scold more for 'posh' looking girls, girls who speak english and girls who wear trendy clothes. They know they can't be with them, ever. So they become frustrated and angry about themselves , their own personality and achievements. They let out this frustration by scolding these type of girls.

3. To reduce self confidence of boys.
So these seniors identify potential romantic partner from the freshers, and if they feel like one of the boys from the freshers batch is likely to get romantically involved with their target, they humiliate him infront of her, they destroy his personality. Sometimes it even gets physical.
They play Good Cop Bad Cop with boys as well, to be friend with a boy and learn more info about their potential romantic partner.
Another aspect of this is to be dominant over the freshers, to have certain control over them so that you can convert them to any movement(political mostly) that you believe in.

So that's my experience about Ragging culture in University of Kelaniya. Rag destroys people, their energy and self confidence. It should not be part of University Culture, Period!
