They are protecting it for a special reason. It's true & obvious. To protect Lyanna and what secrets lie with her & rhaegar.. I'm not saying that isn't.

What I'm saying is IT'S NOT ABOUT THE IRON THRONE MAINLY.
As I quoted before, "For the upcoming future where the winter will rule.."

Why did Rhaegar became a knight in the first place??? Why did he kept contact with Aemon Targaryen??

If you are saying he did all & kidnapped lyanna to start a bloody battle just to make an heir for the iron throne, think whether that makes sense or not.
Because the other lords of the seven kingdoms were ready to rule out Aryes and make Rhaegar the king. There were some hints about it. And rhaegar was not stupid enough to do something silly as to give birth to a bastard and go through a lot of trouble again to denounce his other heir Aegon & his siter and give the iron throne to the bastard..

IT IS FOR SOMETHING ENTIRELY ELSE THAN THE IRON THRONE. A PROPHESY THAT HE WANTED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Prince that was promised & Azor Ahai reborn are two prophesies IMO. They could be the same but no one in westeros speak about that Azor Ahai but they do about "The Prince that was promised". The only person who says both is Maelisandre.

First of all, Rhaegar thought that HE IS "The Prince that was promised."
That's is why basically he became a knight..
Then some time after he thought that he's son by Elia Martell "Aegon" was the prince that was promised. Aemon Targaryen (Master Aemon at Castle Black) believed it too. Those two shared letters about that too. Then for some reason it went away..
I think before the tourney at Harrenhall, Rhaegar found something maybe, and took it up with Lyanna.. Why?? I don't know. I think he read or found something maybe connecting Stark & Targaryen Bloodlines will create the "Prince that was promised".
And before Aemon died, he says to Samwell Tarly about Danerys.. That all the facts about her points that she is the "Prince that was promised". But the thing is everyone was looking for a prince & not a princess. He regrets that he should've been at her side guiding her..
But I think even then Aemon was wrong and Lyanna gave birth to the prince that was promised by Rhaegar...
