Word you're looking for is Virtualization.

On an i3 laptop, plugging a SSD wont give you any performance increase for virtualization as those processors have very little processor cache.

Like GT said, any SSD will do the job as all of them are faster than SATA HDDs.
If you really want to work on Virtualization, get a second hand server chassis with at least a Xeon 6 Core processor. Plug a SSD to that and load vmware on the SSD and use 7200RPM SATA or SAS drives to host the VMs.
