Have you ever read a book called "From Third World to First" ? If not I urge you to read this book because this book still applies to SL politics. This book is written by Lee Kuan Yew, Former Prime Minister of Singapore and the one who built Singapore at this level.
In the book it says, If your country is still a 3rd world country and if you want to make it to the level of 1st world, people should choose their president/PM with following characteristics.

1. Should be a professional
2. Smart dictatorship
3. Backed by a good Visionary group

Now, let me explain how Gota is far away from this and how Patali comes into the picture.

1. Should be a professional
Gota was in Military before and went to US and worked as a data entry operator. So he is not clearly a professional. But from the other hand Patali is an Engineer from Moratuwa university with a first class degree.

2. Smart dictatorship
If you see, I highlight the word SMART. They both have the dictatorship skills. But Gota doesn't contain any smart skills but more foolish skills.

I can give you some examples,
* Rathupasvala incident - This is one of the biggest foolish act by Gota.
* Most of UDA projects completed by using force.
* Not started a single smart project - Please mention if you know some. Gota started few projects but not smart ones.

Maybe you are not aware, Patali started lot of UDA projects after he appoint as the megapolis minister. Some of these projects are real smart projects. Here some examples,

* Urben regeneration programme - http://www.uda.gov.lk/urban-regeneration-programme.html

- If you clearly see there are more than 5000 homes (maybe even more because I can't remember the exact figure) built for last 2 years.

- People willingly went to these new houese without making any trouble and this is the SMART dictatorship. Because what Gota did was, he use the force and white van to make this happen. But on the other hand this guy just use his brain to achive this. Even this project contains a lot of sub projects. If you want more info please check the above link.

* Bere lake restrcture
- Gota also did this as a UDA project. But not in a smart way. He use navy to clear the Bere lake and ask all the media to give some publicity. But after few months the lake becomes a garbage again. So in nutshell this was a failure project.
- Patali and the UDA team created a plan for this. They found the main reasons why this lake becomes a garbage everyday. Top reasons are people are just putting their own garbase to this lake and some people and companies use this lake as a drainage mechanism to clear their own stuff.
- So what Partali did was, before clearning this mess he move all people to new houses and regulate all companies to not to put any garbage to this lake. This took few months becase some companies ask for more time to fix their system. But now if you go you can see the lake has been restructured.

* Garbage issue
- This is not a megapolis responsibility. This is mainly a provincial councils responsibility. But when the president ask Patali to take over this responsibility for colombo area he came up with a really good plan. One of the main point here is categorization of garbage or itemize garbage. That means you need to separate garbage before giving it to the MC.
- Now government is composing compost and making some profit.
- Also few projects funded from private sector to make electricity.

* Recover lost in UDA , CEB and make them profitable organizations.

Anyway there are a lot of projects (smart) started and some of them completed. LRT and LRT hubs are really smart projects that he started.

3. Backed by a good Visionary group

Not like "Viyathmaga". Majority of "Viyathmaga" includes a lot of corrupted people. If you check the people who backed Patali then you know the difference.

Also above all his political points are clearly in another level. Specially about the war. Because I can still remember, JHU is the first political party who ask for a war when we were in the peace agreement. At that time even I thought this guy was nuts

Anyway I summarize few things based on the time. There are lot more to discuss.
