This was known. This nasty virus attacks the Central Nervous System. Also the brain stem gets infected (This was conclusively proven with test animals). This causes the respiratory issues by affecting the brain centre that controls the mechanism of breathing. So the difficulty in breathing isn't just simply because of the lungs only....you could lose the control of the breathing function itself!

Also it contributes to Cardiac, Kidney & Testicular damage....

So what happens to the people that get over this with mild symptoms? any long lasting effects even after being cured?

Sadly yes... Lung damage estimated to be lasting for 5 -10 years possibly. This virus is serious...
It can affect the lungs, heart, the liver, the kidneys, the brain, testicles, the endocrine system and the blood system.....

For SARS it took 15 years for lungs to completely heal, for MERS the lung fibrosis was permanent. It's not easy with any CoronaVirus.

So everyone please take care and stay safe.

Sorry.. Just noticed that you were enquiring about mild cases. Those who got mild symptoms would probably not have devastating after effects over long term.

Influenza viruses constantly change. It's called Antigenic Shift and Antigenic Drift - in plain language mutations.
Antigenic drift happens frequently, antigenic shift is much less.
That's the reason.

I said that Influenza viruses mutates easily. Not this damn Covid. The Italian researchers claim that the current infection virus is just only a few variations from the reference virus provided by the Chinese scientists in January.

So far no major mutations... But NUS (Singapore) reported that they noticed 8 patients with a 382 nucleotide deletion, which encompasses almost the entire open reading frame of Orf8. But after that they are silent. That's the only major mutation reported from anywhere.
