Barcelona legend Suarez joins Atletico Madrid in €6 million transfer

Barcelona have confirmed that Luis Suarez has joined Atletico Madrid after the two Spanish sides came to terms on a deal for the Uruguayan star.

Atleti will pay Barca €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) to acquire the striker, who departs Camp Nou after six seasons with the club.Suarez had been heavily linked with Juventus in recent weeks as the Italian champions have been in the hunt for a striker, but the Bianconeri moved on to other targets after Suarez was forced to go through a lengthy process of acquiring Italian citizenship.Instead, he'll head to Atleti after a stay with Barca that saw him claim 13 trophies while becoming the club's third-highest all-time goalscorer, only topped by Cesar and Leo Messi.

"FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suarez. The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona €6 million in variables," the Catalan club announced."FC Barcelona would like to publicly express their gratitude to Luis Suarez for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future."Suarez originally made the move to Barcelona in 2014, having emerged as a superstar during his time with Liverpool.

He went on to score 198 goals in 283 games for the Blaugrana, earning the Golden Shoe as Europe’s top scorer after scoring 59 total goals in 2015-16.While at Barca, Suarez won four La Liga titles and a Champions League, as he famously scored against Juventus to secure that European title for Barca. He'll now join Diego Simeone's Atletico outfit, giving the club an option up top following the departure of Alvaro Morata, who recently joined Juventus on an initial 12-month loan deal with an option to buy for €45m (£40m/$52m).

Suarez scored 21 goals in 36 games for Barca last season as he battled injury midway through Barca's campaign in what turned out to be his least-prolific season at the Camp Nou.After arriving in August, new Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman told Suarez he would not be in his plans for the upcoming season, sealing the 33-year-old's fate at Camp Nou.Now with Atletico, Suarez could be ready in time for this weekend's match against Granada with the club then set to visit Huesca next Wednesday.

 Brighton and Hove Albion 2-3 Manchester United: Fernandes penalty settles astonishing contest

    omcUH6T.jpg

Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty with the last kick of an astonishing game as Manchester United stole a 3-2 win over a Brighton and Hove Albion side who struck the woodwork five times. The Portuguese kept his cool in the 100th minute to settle matters at the end of a dramatic encounter at the Amex Stadium in which United rode their luck to the extreme.

Brighton, showing no signs of fatigue despite facing a fifth game in 13 days, hit both posts and the crossbar in the first half before breaking the deadlock via Neal Maupay's nerveless Panenka penalty after Fernandes fouled Tariq Lamptey.United – needing a response to their limp opening-game loss to Crystal Palace – levelled within 187 seconds, though, Lewis Dunk unfortunate to divert past Mat Ryan from close range after Fernandes' set-piece caused problems.

Referee Chris Kavanagh chalked off a penalty he had awarded early in the second half after reviewing the incident himself, allowing Paul Pogba to breathe a sigh of relief after Aaron Connolly took a tumble.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men made full use of the reprieve as Marcus Rashford, having just seen a goal disallowed, brilliantly danced his way into the box and fired home via a deflection off Dunk.Graham Potter was cursing his luck when Solly March and Leandro Trossard hit the post and bar respectively, before jumping for joy when the former headed in a stoppage-time equaliser.

But the drama was not over and Maupay handled Harry Maguire's header, which was cleared off the line by March. The final whistle had gone but a VAR check resulted in a spot-kick from which Fernandes wrapped up the points in a game that will live long in the memory.

West Brom 3-3 Chelsea: Abraham completes Blues' second-half rescue mission

    tJrGisG.jpg

Tammy Abraham's last-gasp goal completed Chelsea's rescue mission following a shambolic first half in a breathless 3-3 draw at West Brom. The Baggies were gifted three goals inside 27 minutes at The Hawthorns with Callum Robinson scoring twice after shoddy defending from Marcos Alonso and 36-year-old Premier League debutant Thiago Silva.

Kyle Bartley made it 3-0 after more poor work at a corner but Mason Mount's well-struck 55th-minute effort was backed up by substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi putting the finishing touch on a great Chelsea move.West Brom then buckled under the sheer weight of pressure in five additional minutes as Abraham tapped in from close range after Sam Johnstone saved Mount's shot.

Robinson caught Chelsea cold inside four minutes with a fine drilled finish across Willy Caballero after Matheus Pereira had picked off Alonso's poor header.Abraham missed a sitter and Timo Werner wastefully crashed against the crossbar before another error, this time Silva's dallying and slip, allowed Robinson to slide under Caballero to double the lead.Incredibly it was 3-0 when Bartley unerringly slotted in from Darnell Furlong's downward header at Pereira's corner with Chelsea's defending again suspect.

Alonso and Mateo Kovacic were sacrificed for Cesar Azpilicueta and Hudson-Odoi at the break and a high-tempo Chelsea reduced the arrears with a crisp long-ranger from Mount that left Johnstone flat-footed.A fine Chelsea move culminated in Hudson-Odoi linking brilliantly with Kai Havertz before coolly finding the bottom-right corner to really get West Brom nerves jangling with 20 minutes to go.

West Brom were penned further and further back as time wound down and Abraham earned Chelsea the point after reacting quickly when Johnstone could only parry Mount's effort, with a VAR check ruling Havertz had not handled shortly before.

Manchester City 2-5 Leicester City: Vardy hat-trick leaves Guardiola stunned

    vpMfBhf.jpg

Jamie Vardy was the scourge of Manchester City again as his hat-trick secured a sensational 5-2 win for Leicester City and raised fresh questions about Pep Guardiola's defence.

The striker won two penalties and converted both, either side of a terrific backheeled finish for his second goal, to net his second hat-trick against City – almost four years after his treble in a 4-2 victory over the same opponents. His former Leicester team-mate Riyad Mahrez gave the hosts the lead at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, but Vardy then took centre stage, with James Maddison adding a brilliant fourth goal late on.

Nathan Ake headed a City consolation, but Leicester then scored a fifth in a dramatic Premier League clash, with Maddison fouled and Youri Tielemans slotting in another penalty. It meant Guardiola, in his 686th game as a manager, suffered the indignity of seeing one of his teams conceding five goals for the first time.

Atletico Madrid 6-1 Granada: Suarez at the double on debut as Rojiblancos run riot

    L9vDdJp.jpg

Luis Suarez scored twice and assisted another in a dream debut off the bench in Atletico Madrid's 6-1 demolition of Granada in their opening LaLiga fixture. The Uruguay forward, who joined from Barcelona in a €6million deal on Friday, had already provided an assist for Marcos Llorente and won a penalty that was overturned by the time he powered in a header for his first Atleti goal.

Jorge Molina's consolation brought only brief joy for Granada as Suarez, who only entered the fray in the 70th minute, rounded off a sensational cameo in second-half injury time. The result was already beyond doubt before Suarez's introduction with Diego Costa heading Atleti in front and, after Saul Niguez missed a first-half penalty, Angel Correa and Joao Felix were also on target prior to the late glut of goals.

With Suarez watching on from the stands, Costa wasted little time in proving his worth, meeting Correa's cross with a brilliant header.Matters were made worse for Granada when Domingos Duarte fouled Joao Felix, yet Saul's penalty was well saved by Rui Silva.Any Granada comeback hopes were dealt a hammer blow two minutes into the second half – Correa thumping in from close range after controlling Joao Felix's pass.

Correa returned the favour 18 minutes later, sliding a throughball – which was dummied by Costa – to Joao Felix, who coolly rounded a defender before slotting home. With victory ensured, Simeone handed Suarez his Atleti bow and the Uruguay talisman made an instant impact, setting up Llorente to tuck his effort under the keeper and make it 4-0.Suarez was awarded a penalty moments later, only for referee Xavier Estrada Fernandez to overturn his decision after checking the screen.

Yet the 33-year-old was not to be denied his first goal in red-and-white, which came courtesy of a fantastic thumping header in the 85th minute. With Molina bundling in a consolation at the other end, there was still time for Suarez to strike again, and he had his second in the final minute when he tucked in on the follow-up after hitting the woodwork.

Hoffenheim 4-1 Bayern Munich: Champions' 32-match unbeaten run ends as Kramaric, Dabbur inspire hosts

    7gjWvAN.jpg

Bayern Munich's 32-match unbeaten run across all competitions has come to an end in a deserved 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim, also halting a run of 14 consecutive Bundesliga wins.

Hansi Flick's men were taken to extra-time before winning the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla on Thursday, but in Sinsheim three days later the champions were far from their best as they missed the opportunity to claim a record 11th successive Bundesliga away win.Hoffenheim were far superior to Bayern in the first half, with the visitors arguably lucky to only trail by one goal at the interval as Joshua Kimmich pulled one back after Ermin Bicakcic and Munas Dabbur had put the hosts 2-0 up.

Joshua Zirkzee, starting to allow Robert Lewandowski a rest, hit the crossbar early in the second period, though it only provided a momentary boost as Andrej Kramaric put the result beyond Bayern with two goals in the final 13 minutes to inflict a first defeat on the champions since December, and in emphatic style.

Perhaps still recovering from their exploits on Thursday, Bayern looked particularly sluggish early on and Hoffenheim deservedly took the lead as Bicakcic glanced home Dennis Geiger's corner delivery. That shock was not enough to jolt Bayern into life and eight minutes later they trailed 2-0 – Benjamin Pavard inadvertently put Dabbur through on goal as he tackled Christoph Baumgartner, and the Israel striker lifted a disguised chip over Manuel Neuer.

Bayern survived two more scares before capitalising through Kimmich's gorgeous 20-yard effort that went in off the bar in the 36th minute.Hoffenheim's intensity remained impressive after the restart and they went close twice in quick succession through Dabbur early on.Bayern almost made the most of those let-offs when Zirkzee hit the bar from an acute angle just prior to being replaced by Lewandowski, as Flick attempted to force the issue.

That change failed to bring the desired improvement and Hoffenheim restored their two-goal lead through Kramaric, who held off Jerome Boateng after receiving Ihlas Bebou's pass and swept into the bottom-left corner.A determined run from Bebou then resulted in Neuer tripping him in the area, allowing Kramaric to seal a stunning victory from the spot.

:love:Brighton and Hove Albion 0-3 Manchester United: Pogba free-kick seals quarter-final spot

    SFx0Gwy.jpg

Paul Pogba scored as a second-half substitute to seal a 3-0 win for Manchester United over Brighton and Hove Albion in Wednesday's EFL Cup last-16 tie at the Amex Stadium. United required a 100th minute penalty to claim an undeserved 3-2 win at this ground in the Premier League on Saturday but found things a lot easier in this latest encounter.

Pogba found the net via a deflected free-kick 10 minutes from time after being brought off the bench with United toiling at the time, albeit a goal to the good through Scott McTominay's first-half header.Juan Mata set up that opener and was also on target with the visitors' second goal of the game before Pogba took over, sealing a third win in a row for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men in all competitions.

Bruno Fernandes, the scorer of United's dramatic goal at the same venue four days ago, was left out of the squad as Solskjaer made 10 changes, compared to nine for Brighton. Those mass changes perhaps explain the disjointed nature of the first half, with McTominay finding a way through a minute before the interval from the only real opportunity.

Mata sent in a teasing free-kick from the right and McTominay was left all alone five yards out to head past Jason Steele - his first goal since the Manchester derby in March.United were grateful to the reactions of back-up goalkeeper Dean Henderson for keeping them level with 67 minutes played, getting down to his left to tip Leandro Trossard's effort wide of the post.

The visitors used that warning wisely by scoring an all-important second goal six minutes later through Mata, who controlled Donny van de Beek's delightful backheeled pass and picked out the bottom-right corner.

Pogba, introduced along with Marcus Rashford, made certain of a place in the quarter-finals with a free-kick from 20 yards that took a telling deflection off the wall on its way past Steele.

Burnley 0-3 Manchester City: Torres on target as Sterling bags brace

    2unUP4R.jpg

Manchester City bounced back from their Premier League humbling by Leicester City with a 3-0 EFL Cup victory over Burnley, with Raheem Sterling scoring twice and Ferran Torres netting his first goal for the club.A 5-2 home reverse on Sunday left Pep Guardiola's men in need of a result and a performance to steady their burgeoning season.

Sterling thrived on the industry of Kevin De Bruyne, Torres and teenage debutant Cole Palmer throughout a one-sided match and scored with neat finishes in either half at Turf Moor.Guardiola, who is aiming to win the competition for a fourth successive time, saw his £20.9m (€22.1m) signing from Valencia make it 3-0 with a cool finish in the 65th minute as City reached the quarter-finals.

Burnley found themselves under pressure from the outset and Sterling volleyed a Torres cross narrowly wide from six yards out.The Clarets had goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell to thank for keeping them in the game, the Northern Ireland international twice getting down quickly to save low shots from Sterling.

There was no stopping the England winger when Benjamin Mendy's low pass from the left found him 12 yards from goal and he slammed the ball into the corner of the net with no hesitation.Sterling doubled City's lead three minutes into the second half, neatly turning Torres' cross into the bottom corner of the net from close range after De Bruyne's surging run carved Burnley open.Less than 10 minutes later Riyad Mahrez's pass was touched on by Sterling into the path of Torres, who carried the ball into the box before rattling it low into the far corner of the net from 18 yards.

Bayern Munich 3-2 Borussia Dortmund: Kimmich delivers Supercup for Flick's men

    4hV8CDn.jpg

Bayern Munich followed up last season's famous treble with another trophy as Joshua Kimmich struck late to clinch a 3-2 DFL-Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund . The midfield general in the mighty Bayern machine won the ball in the centre circle and bundled in after exchanging passes with Robert Lewandowski for the 82nd-minute clincher.Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Muller had earlier put Bayern 2-0 in front, but Julian Brandt and Erling Haaland brought Dortmund back to level terms.

Victory meant Bayern, whose 32-game unbeaten run ended with defeat at the weekend to Hoffenheim, delivered more success in the Hansi Flick era having also won the UEFA Super Cup last week.

Bayern dominated the early stages, Kimmich seeing a header saved, before their opening goal came on a breakaway after a Dortmund corner.Alphonso Davies shifted the ball away from danger to Kingsley Coman ahead of him on the left, with Muller's pass then releasing Robert Lewandowski, whose low cross from the right was struck firmly at goal by Tolisso.

Marwin Hitz got enough on the ball to turn it against the crossbar, but it bounced down and Tolisso bundled over the line for the 18th-minute breakthrough. It was 2-0 to Bayern in the 32nd minute when Davies hoisted a cross from the left to the far post and Muller powered in a header off the right post.

It looked like a night where Bayern may produce a statement result and performance, but then they lost their way. Brandt was clinical after Benjamin Pavard gave away the ball, with slick passing freeing the Dortmund forward to rifle powerfully past Neuer for a 39th-minute goal that changed the momentum.Haaland grabbed a leveller in the 55th minute when Thomas Delaney played him in and the striker buried a terrific finish past Neuer, who four minutes later parried a thumping effort to deny the Norway international a second.

Bayern needed a slice of fortune for the winner. Delaney lost the ball near the halfway line and Kimmich was quick to pounce, feeding Lewandowski and continuing his run to receive the return pass. His initial shot was pushed out but, despite being down on the turf, Kimmich managed to get a foot to the ball and prod it into the back of the net as Dortmund defenders converged.
