ECON0MYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Colombo Dockyard Plc, a unit of Onomichi of Japan said it had won an order to build a cable laying and repair vessel from Orange Marine France.
The proposed vessel, designed by Vard Design AS, Norway will be 100 metres in length with a beam of 18.8 metres and a depth of 7.15 metres, and shall have a deadweight capacity of 1800 deadweight tonnes, Colombo Dockyard said.
The contract was signed by Didier Dillard chief executive of Orange Marine and D V Abeysinghe managing director and chief executive of Dockyard.
It is scheduled to be delivered in early 2023.
The vessel has a speed of 14.5 knots and can accommodation 76 persons. It has three cable tanks to carry fiber optic and power cables. One of the three tanks is fitted with a Carousel.
The cable ship will be built to Bureau Veritas classification society standards and the requirements of the French Flag Authority.
“The innovative eco-friendly design, quality of workmanship, the CDPLC’s proven capability and previous experience gave Colombo Dockyard the competitive edge over the international competition to secure this project,” the company said.
In 2019, Dockyard had built and delivered a 113-metre cable laying Vessel to Japan.
The cable-laying ship will have a diesel-electric plant with four generators. It will have two main azimuth propellers aft and two tunnel thrusters forward. (Colombo/Dec03/2020-sb)
