I'm telling you this because I'm currently doing my PHD in AI in the US. Opportunities are immense. If you are not going to do CS or ENTC in Moratuwa, others are pretty much useless if you wanna go into AI,Crypto or any other immerging tech field. Or I must say if you wanna go into any *interesting* field. ( We all know how crap civil is lol) . Get a Maths or Physics special BSC, then you can easily get into a AI,ML PHD program in the US.This is pretty much true. However you will have to work your ass off from the second year to get admission to a decent American university. However this is what all the Indian students are doing. I know many people who use PCA ( Principal component analysis) but doesn't know the math behind.

Get the GRE books (English one specially) and study during the university time.
Depends on what you like. You can basically change the research area when you apply for a PhD in the US. ( Given that you have a good standing in your undergrad degree). If you want more information about getting into a PhD program in the US, I'm more than happy to help. What's the difference between those two paths? What's more beneficial?

What is the point of telling me this. I have already got my PHd in the said field. That being said, irrespective of the degree you chose to follow in Moratuwa, or any other university you can get into a desired field of research as long as you can prove that you have the capability to carry independent research. Publications in international journals and workshops, work experience, GRE scores carries enough weight.I'm telling you this because I'm currently doing my PHD in AI in the US. Not necessarily. Your undergrad course content matters to a considerable degree and there can be exceptions. GRE scores do shit. If you have taken above their cut off thats it, They dont care whether you got a lot more or just near the cut off. So the weight is actually low. If their cut off is 325 , doesnt really matter whether you get 330 or 340What is the point of telling me this. I have already got my PHd in the said field. What you are telling isnt exactly true. Yes, your undergraduate degree matters but that isnt the only thing. All universities define a criteria, for selection and defines the guidelines. For fields as AI, which is an interdisciplinary study, the criteria is often a focuses on what is expected and do what degree. The GRE math may be shit, but for foreign students it sets the bar for English language vocabulary and reading. Since in graduate school you carrry out independent research, demostrating you have the capability to self study and conduct work with minimum supervisoion is often desired to the name of your degree. Thus publications in speaks for themselves. Not necessarily. Your undergrad course content matters to a considerable degree and there can be exceptions. GRE scores do shit. I'm not disagreeing with you. I was simply telling that if someone can take the GRE score just near the cut off, need not really worry about it that much. And yea its true you could get into a completely unrelated field for your PhD after undergrads, but if you specifically want to get into AI/ML research and PhDs, it's highly competitive nowadays. Therefore you might as well go and do CS,ENTC or MATHS or Physics which will give you abundance of opportunities and a clear advantage when you apply for higher studies in AI/ML specific fields, rather than spending your time in a ,for instance Civil/Mech degree for four years. Machine learning can be applied to any field technically if you have a dataset. Just because someone can use a python library and set a regression model means nothing and anyone can do that. Data science is not AI/ML. I got the feeling you were referring to ML as data science. I should have been clearer.???
Where have I suggested that he/she should choose mediocrity in my reply?
Au contraire. I have specifically referred to data science as a dwindling trend. And to anyone who wants to get into Machine learning, I would suggest take an introductory course in Deep learning first. Not the normal sequence, everyone studies traditional ML techniques such as regression, clustering and etc first and then later on get into deep learning. It will be interesting and inspire you when you see how deep learning works and some applications. By the experience some people tend to give it up when they see traditional ML methods so if you want to be inspired and motivate yourself to get into the track, learn about deep learning (can easily do by youtube or Andrew Ngs content).
And using a python library and setting up a regression model is not ML, maybe it's sufficient for you to get a data science job in a Sri Lankan company but if you wanna do cool stuff be ready to get your hands dirty with Advanced optimization etc.
