The real problem is that the TRCSL is extremely corrupt. They are the ones who have to put the laws in place, the companies are merely corporates who would naturally not want to lower their profit margins barring government intervention.

Sri Lanka's telecommunications sector was headed in the right direction at the start. We had internet from 1996 onwards, and we were the first in South Asia to offer commercial packages, same for 3G, 4G. We had unlimited internet packages (ADSL) from the early 2000s. Mobile internet was cheap, most of the 90s generation were introduced to the internet using 3G, 4G dongles with reasonable speeds. I remember paying 50 LKR for 2GB with airtel back in 2009.

And then the Rajapakse mafia (Palpita and co.) penetrated TRCSL.
