FYI - Copied from a post I made in March 2025. I have written all about Vitamin D on several earlier posts.
I have posted several threads and comments on Vitamin D since Covid era. Please read.

As I mentioned before
living in SL or in the Sun doesn't help much. With dark skins the Vitamin D synthesis is low. Here's a recent notification from the MOH.
"Among Sri Lankan adults Vitamin D deficiency was 58.8% and insufficiency 31.4%. Overall around 90% of Sri Lankan adults are not having adequate levels of vitamin D. A study conducted in Southern Sri Lanka (2013) found that overall VDD among community-dwelling healthy women was 56.2%. Another study found the age and sex-adjusted prevalence of VDD was 57.2% in an adult Sri Lankan urban population (2015). Among school children aged 10-18 years (2017), the prevalence of VDD and VDI was 13.2% (95%CI: 11.9%- 14.5%) and 45.6% (95%CI: 43.7%-47.5%), respectively. The results shown imply the high burden of VDD & VDI which suggests the government plan mitigation strategies to reduce the attributed disease burden in the country."
Just take 2000IU a day.
PS: You can always do a blood test and check.
PS; You don't have to take high doses. Keep on using 1000IU or 2000 IU a day. THis is safe. HIgh doses were IV administered during the first SARS infection. It does seem to protect the older people. Generally Vitamin D offers benefits with respiratory diseases even though the exact mechanism is not clear.
Many people are deficient and don’t realize it because of no symptoms and doctors don’t routinely check vitamin D levels.
All in our household were taking 2000IU after Covid.
FYI.. here are my results over a considerable period.
29/09/15 Vit D level 56 nmol/L
29/05/20 Vit D level 64 nmol/L
19/05/22 Vit D level 70 nmol/L
14/09/24 Vit D level 96 nmol/L
Do NOT take high strength Vitamin D supplements unless you have specific issues that might need a prescription high dose. Too much Vitamin D can be bad as it causes Vit D toxicity.
PPS: There are simple low cost (around 10 USD or so) over the counter rapid self tests now available. Check with your pharmacist.
