Why Litro suppliers should use Hambantota

The current controversy stems from a simple clause in Litro’s tender: allowing suppliers to use Hambantota. Critics paint this as favouritism. In reality, it is economic rationality.

Here the cost–benefit analysis is clear:

Kerawalapitiya cost structure

• Saudi Aramco CP + premium: $ 108–118 per MT

Hambantota alternative - (laugfs)

• Premium on VLGC cargoes: $ 10 per MT
• Port dues: $ 10 per MT
• Throughput fee: $ 17.5 per MT
• Freight Hambantota–Colombo: $ 8–17 per MT
• tevedoring: $ 6 per MT
• Total: ~$ 55–60 per MT
