this is what i think of the whole scenario.
sarath fonseka is on a suicidal mission. SF will be exterminated with a few weeks to the election (by the alleys of UNP + pro LTTE groups) and put the blame on Mahinda. people will get pissed off of mahinda and will vote for UNP candidate or.. at least will refrain from voting to mahinda.. this will give an automatic victory for Ranil...
