Tension was running high in the southern town of Tangalle after clashes between two political groups earlier in the day left at least six people hospitilised.

JVP MP Nihal Galapathy said that government supporters had carried out an unprovoked attack on their propaganda road show at Beliatte which left six of their activities injured and at least three vehicles damaged.

He accused the police of bias adding that instead of apprehending the culprits responsible for the violence they had gone on to arrest six of their party supporters.

Hambantota police chief Senior Superintendent (SSO) Neil Daluwatte dismissed the allegations saying that three person had been arrested for violating election laws by using loud speakers mounted on the vehicles.

“The police have taken into custody three vehicles along with the drivers and denied that there had been any serious clashes. However we are monitoring the situation”, Mr. Daluwatte said.
