An attempt by supporters of Minister Mervyn Silva to disrupt a JVP - UNP joint campaign in Kiribathgoda town failed today morning when a group came under attack from the campaigners, political sources said.
The supporters of the minister armed with clubs and bottles had attempted to disrupt the campaign, but they had comed under attack, political sources added.
Police later used tear gas to disperse the crowds, but the campaign is continuing.
Police earlier had warned the JVP - UNP joint campaign not to go ahead with their campaign plan as there was a rival group waiting to attack them.
However, the campaign had gone ahead when they initially came under attack.

A clash which erupted among supporters of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the United National Party (UNP) and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) supporters at Kiribathgoda has disrupted traffic along the Colombo-Kandy road.
The incident began a short while ago and the Police are attempting to bring the clashing factions under control, reports the Adaderana correspondent in the area.
