One of Sri Lanka’s leading vocalists Sujatha Attanayake shares the grief of losing a son in the war with thousands of other mothers. She grieves for her soldier-son, Chanaka Sanjeeva who sacrificed his young life at an isolated army post at Pooneryn in September, ten years ago.
Since his death, she had been away in the US with her husband although she returns home once a year to be with Sanjeeva’s younger brother. Her visits often coincide with the annual dana to invoke merit on her son.
She was here last September and expects to be back with her husband in a few weeks time. This is her 11th visit.
She is happy to talk with The Sunday Island about her son and his brief military stint that ended so tragically. For the first time, she was not talking about her own career which spans over four decades but instead of her son’s two-year period with the army.
She could not hold her tears as she spoke lovingly of her second son posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain when LTTE terrorists shot him dead in a dawn assault on army positions at Pooneryn on September 25, 1992.
He was among 26 officers and men who died that day, she says, adding that by the time reinforcements reached the scene of the battle, the terrorists had overrun the isolated post. Reinforcements regained the area in a hard fought battle but "I lost my son," she cries.
Chanaka was the second of her three sons. He was born on January 27, 1969. Heli was the eldest and Samin was the youngest. All of them studied at D.S.Sennanayake, she says, adding that he was not the only one who expressed his desire to join the forces. He joined the army’s 29th intake of officer cadets in February, 1988.
"The family opposed it," she says, expressing the belief that her son would not have been happy doing anything else. He wanted to join the army. He loved the life in the army, she says proudly. Knowing that the family would try to force him to concentrate on some other profession, he joined the army before the advanced level results were out. He did not want to take a chance.
The college produced many security forces officers. They have done the country proud, she says.
He was at the Diyatalawa Defence Academy for two years. He joined active service after being commissioned on February 16, 1989 as a second lieutenant.
That was a time the country was on fire. Anti-insurgency operations were taking place against the JVP-led insurrection. In the North-East, the IPKF was battling the LTTE.
Despite having the opportunity to join a non-fighting unit, Chanaka wanted to be in a front-line fighting unit. He joined the Ceylon Light Infantry (Sri Lanka Light Infantry) the country’s oldest fighting formation. He was proud to be part of the infantry, she says, pointing out that he could have easily avoided the infantry and opted to join some other regiment.
He was first deployed at Kalutara. When the LTTE resumed hostilities in the second week of June 1990 after a 14-month long truce with the then President Ranasinghe Premadasa’s government, he was assigned for operational duties in the North-East. He was stationed at various bases, she says, mentioning Monkey Bridge, Mullaithivu, Mandathivu and Pooneryn as some of the places where he faced the LTTE.
"He was fearless. A soldier is under no illusion as to his own life expectancy in the battlefield. My son was constantly under severe strain and realised the threat to life and limb," she says, pointing out that Chanaka steadfastly refused to leave the army. The family initially tried to persuade him to join a non-fighting unit. He could have asked his father’s younger brother, who was a senior officer at that time, to help him. But he was not interested. He firmly believes in facing the enemy.
"My father was a retired police officer. There were several others in our family who served with the security forces," she says, explaining that Chanaka really believed in fighting for a just cause. He had everything. But did not want to take life easy. Instead wanted to take the war to the terrorists.
He was not scared to take risks, she says, fondly remembering the way, her son used to call Major General Denzil Kobbekaduwa his appachci in the army. Kobbekaduwa died in a landmine blast at Araly point five weeks before Chanaka’s death. "My son cried. He was shaken. Young officers and men believed in Kobbekaduwa’s ability to defeat terrorists," she says, expressing the belief that the Araly point tragedy demoralised the entire army.
A year later, terrorists devastated the entire Pooneryn-Nagathevanthurai base. Hundreds of women lost their husbands and mothers lost their sons. It was a catastrophic situation. She did not blame anybody but said that such losses could have been avoided if better plans were available.
Sujatha talks proudly of her eldest son Heli, married to an Indian girl. She is Seneka from Bangalore. They live in the United States. They have a two-year-old son, Ayod Sanjeeva. Litte Sanjeeva always reminds me of my second son. "My eldest grandchild looks so much like my own son," she says, adding that as a Buddhist she firmly believes in reincarnation.
Her youngest son, Samin a pilot with the SriLankan airlines, is married to Dilki, daughter of leading film actress Anoja Weerasinghe. They have a six-month baby. He is Tissen Semal.
Sujatha says she lost all interest in life when terrorists took one of her sons away from her. "I had no desire to live anymore," she says. But since little Ayod and Tissen have given fresh hopes to Sujatha who talks lovingly of her sons and grandsons. ‘They have given me so much happiness," she says but memories of Chanaka always brings tears to her eyes.
Her eldest son wanted to join the navy and the youngest was interested in joining the airforce. Their father strongly opposed that. He did not want to lose any more their children.
Chanaka like his brothers would have married a good girl if he did not die in the north. But he did not die in vain. It was for a just cause, she says, recalling that she was not even at home when the tragedy occurred. She was away in Melbourne to sing at a musical show when she was informed of the incident in the north.
"I was only told that my son had been wounded in action. I really believed that. In fact I sang in Melbourne that day while Chanaka’s body was being brought to Colombo," she says, adding that a few years later she got to know from Ven. Gangodawila Soma thera that the entire Sri Lanka community in Melbourne knew of her son’s death. She was the only one unaware of the tragedy.
If one visits Buddhist temples one can often see mothers transfer ‘merit’ as is the custom, and plead to the gods for the safe return of their sons in the battlefield, she says. But I was not even at home when they took my son’s life.
Sujatha says that as a Buddhist she does not want anybody to lose life. She expressed concern over media reports that the LTTE was taking advantage of the cease-fire with the government to strengthen its military capability. She was convinced that whatever the settlement to the North-East problem, it should not result in the division of the country. "My son was just one among thousands of young officers and men from the security forces and the police who made the supreme sacrifice," she says. "Can we even think of separation? The problem needs a political solution but it should never lead to the establishment of a separate state in the North-East."
Terrorism must not be allowed to succeed, she says, adding that she recently sang at an army organised Rana gee prasangaya at the BMICH in aid of the war wounded. She produced a special cassette to honour her son. It contains war songs in memory of her son and thousands of young men who laid down their lives in battle.
Since Chanaka’a death she had not sung at musical shows here except for some organised by the security forces. In 1997 she sang in Jaffna where the announcer in Tamil introduced her as a mother who lost her son at the hands of Tamils. Sujatha who sings in several languages was one of the most sought after vocalists before her soldier son’s death.
She had been in New York when Al Queda destroyed key US economic targets in September 11 attacks last year. "We were to leave New York for Colombo on September 13 and reached New York on the 9th. The attack took place two days later," she says, adding that it was one example what terrorism can do.
